Pregnant 12-year-old girl admitted to hospital
Inside this week...
ambassador to address public Brexit session
by Lynn Whittaker A 12-year-old girl discovered to be pregnant has been admitted to a hospital in Murcia. Staff at the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital raised the alarm when the young patient came to their attention who said that she was otherwise healthy and in a good condition. Initial investigations revealed that the father of the child was also of a similar age and there is no suggestion, according to the girl that she had been subject to any kind of abuse, despite her apparent initial unwillingness to answer police questions. Being so young, pregnancy is a high risk and a girl of 12-years-old is more likely to suffer a premature birth. They would also need to be kept under special observation in case problems
such as high blood pressure and bleeding occur. Legal sources explained that if it’s confirmed that the two minors had consented to their sexual relationship, social services would be instructed to investigate the home circumstances of them both. In the event that the girl has come from a broken home, foster care measures would be put in place to guarantee her wellbeing and that of her future child. If the decision is taken to abort the pregnancy, the girl must have the full authorisation of her parents or legal guardians. Under the Spanish penal code, no law has been broken as people of such an age are considered unable to be charged with sexual offences. Back in 2013, Spain increased their age of consent from 13 to 16.

2 CULTURE: More Chinese tourists encouraged to experience Alicante’s traditions
Flying the flag in China by Lynn Whittaker FRANCESC COLOMER, the regional tourism secretary, has led a business mission to China with the aim of encouraging more Chinese visitors to the Alicante province. The visit is due to end today (Friday) and much of the time will be spent meeting representatives from leading Chinese tourist organisations, the Caissa Travel Group and Ctrip Beijing. In addition, the presi-
dent of the Valencian Tourism Agency will hold meetings with businessmen and media representatives from other specialist tourist companies such as Voyage, China Travel Agent and Tourism Media. There is also a meeting with officials from Mafengwo which supplies information in travel guides to more than 80 million people. Colomer said: “The Chinese market is a great opportunity for the tourism sector and our intention is to open up every
possible chance to negotiate and to establish a relationship that can benefit the Valencian Community.” In addition, he said: “The promotion of new tourism products and trying to encourage new markets will allow us to diversify what is on offer and make our destinations even more attractive to visitors. Cultural tourism is an essential part of what we are developing to showcase our own traditions, festivals, history and heritage.”

No record but plenty of awareness
HUNDREDS OF people got on their bikes and cycled through the main streets of Murcia to spread diabetes awareness, although the organisers failed to secure a world record attempt for the Guinness Book of Records. President of the Murcia Association for the Care of Diabetes (ADIRMUR) Asunción Saez said: “Maybe we didn’t get our record but we certainly got noticed.” There were so many people lining the route of the
bikes that Saez had to move at least 500 metres away from the crowds along the Avenida de la Libertad to enable his telephone comments to be clearly heard. The original plan was to gather 1,200 cyclists to beat the 1,186 Guinness world record, but even though the final number was only in the hundreds that drove along the four kilometre route, diabetes was certainly given a high profile thanks to their efforts.
Water supply improvements underway WORK HAS begun in the centre of Murcia on renewing a number of water supply networks in the city and the first phase of a pedestrian area. The project is planned to last for two months and is taking place on the Avenida Alfonso X El Sabio. Many of the current water pipes are in a poor state due to their age and natural deterioration and water
company Aguas de Murcia have already begun to improve the supply to homes located in the municipality. For its part, another water company Redexis will work on the interconnecting of the two existing networks; the one located on the corner of Calle Santa Clara with Calle Echegaray and the other at Alfonso X, next to Las Claras.

by Glenn Scott CUSTOMS authorities in Alicante have intercepted a cache of cocaine hidden in a piece of sporting equipment. Two people were arrested connected with the 15 kilograms of cocaine coming from Chile and contained in a circular weight used in weightlifting. It’s estimated that the street value of the drug would have exceeded €800,000 The suspect shipment was first detected by the German customs authorities at Bremen Airport where it
the shipment was opened where it was found to contain a steel container weighing more than 40 kilograms and resembling a gym weight. Such was the sophisticated way the drug had been packaged that hydraulic equipment was needed to extract it from the weight, but a previously taken sample of the substance was tested positive for cocaine. Investigators believe that the final destination for the drug was for a number of points in Alicante used for the trade of narcotic substances.

They immediately contacted their counterparts in Spain and warned of the existence of a suspicious package on board a flight that was potentially hiding a large consignment of cocaine inside it. The investigators were able to quickly identify those responsible for the shipping and about to receive the suspected package, and a man and a woman aged 31 and 21-years-old were arrested as they collected it. A bumpier but safer ride
MORE speed bumps will be installed to improve road safety on the CV-900 as it passes through Callosa de Segura. The project has a budget of €225,000 and aims to make that particular section safer and reduce the speed of traffic after a study showed that drivers aren’t respecting the signalling. The stretch of road will
now see a speed limit of 40kph and the sleeping policemen installed between every 150 and 200 metres. Work is planned to take four months to complete on the section between the 3.55 and 4.9 kilometre points that sees an average number of 8,307 vehicles use the road on a daily basis, and includes almost 200 heavy goods vehicles.

House sales back to pre-crisis levels ALICANTE: Double figure percentage rises for house sales in September
Thousands raised for African mission
MORE THAN 900 people turned out in the Cabezo Beaza Sports Centre for the ninth holding of the ‘Paella Solidaria’. The area was full to brimming and included the president of the Murcia region, Fernando López Miras, and the Mayor of Cartagena Ana Belén Castejón. The event raised more than €10,000 and will support an African branch of
the Catholic Church led by a missionary who works with both young and old people who live in fear of contracting Ebola and suffering from illnesses derived from mining. Those attending the event organised by Manos Unidas (Hands United) paid €15 each for the menu, after which there was a grand raffle for prizes donated by local business.
THE Vega Baja Hospital has announced a new online consultation service that has been introduced especially for patients in the endocrinology department. The new technology aims to improve the health of the patients with the online consultation service and at the same time reduce waiting lists. This doesn’t stop patients and their consultants having face-to-face appointments when needed but general information, updating of
the patient’s condition and any recommended changes to treatment can be organised via the internet. A specialist in endocrinology at the hospital, Dr. Isabel Mascarell Martínez, said: “We have an average of 40 consultations each week. Thanks to this virtual communication software, the number of appointments can be reduced since many of the consultations don’t require the physical presence of the patient.”
The doctor will see you now...virtually!
by Steve Collins RATES OF house sales in the Alicante province have increased by almost 15 per cent in the first nine months of the year. Data released by the Spanish Statistics Institute (INE) shows that between January and September (inclusive) 26,249 houses were sold in the Alicante province and returned the highest figure since 2008. The cities of Alicante, Benidorm and Dénia are also where the prices of apart-
ments have increased the most. The real estate market has been strengthened by the pull of foreign buyers who still look to the Alicante province as one of their first ports of call when looking for a second or retirement home. This is coupled with a noticeable recovery in the domestic market with people across Spain looking to buy in the area and has helped the increase of 14.6 per cent compared to the same period last year. For the month of September, the increase was lower at 6.3 per cent.
These encouraging figures allow Alicante to remain as the third Spanish province with the highest number of house sales, second only to Madrid and Barcelona, and also above other cities of large populations and popular tourist destinations such as Valencia, Málaga, Balearic or Canary Islands. Even with the recent figures showing similar levels to those before the recession hit in 2008, the volume of house transactions is far removed from those experienced during the boom years when 40,000 purchases were common.

Emergency rescues can cost you money
THE COSTS to the public for using the emergency services have been highlighted, especially in the aftermath of the number of rescues from the sea that took place during the recent summer. Every time a rescue boat is launched, it costs €500 and an extra €300 for each additional half an hour it’s in operation and
these costs are passed on to individuals should their deployment be caused due to their negligence. This includes needing to be rescued after entering the sea when a red flag is flying. Charges are also applied for the use of a helicopter (€236.50) in the case of mountain rescues – especially in the Vega Baja

Two men arrested for separate violent attacks by Glenn Scott
SANGONERA LA VERDE: Location of the broad daylight attack
LOCAL POLICE in Murcia have arrested two people as alleged perpetrators of two separate crimes of gender violence. The first involved a young man seen assaulting his girlfriend in the street and in broad daylight in Sangonera la Verde. A number of calls were made to the 092 emergency number and when local police arrived on the scene, the victim told the officers that she had been seriously threatened and assaulted. Her boyfriend had allegedly slapped her and pulled her hair as well as hitting her head up against a wall with his hands around her neck, although she didn’t need any urgent health care. The alleged aggressor, who was arrested by the officers and taken to the Guardia Civil barracks in Las Torres de Cotillas, was a 20-yearold Spanish national. The second attack in the village of Rincón de
Beniscornia awakened local residents at dawn when screams and cries for help were heard from inside a house. When police arrived at the scene they were unable to enter the property. Nobody answered the door and the fact they were convinced there was somebody inside, possible hurt and needing urgent assistance, they requested the presence of the fire department to help them gain access. As the firefighters were trying to get in, a man answered the front door saying to the police officers that he hadn’t heard them knocking. Once inside the premises, the officers were able to prove that the man had assaulted not only his wife with punches to her head, but also one of his children too. Paramedics attended this scene but the injuries didn’t need any onward transmission to hospital. A 48-year-old Spanish man was arrested and taken to the El Carmen Police Station.
Agriculture ‘disaster’ predicted if drought persists DROUGHT conditions coupled with a lack

Despite having some areas where the

It’s Christmas... and Santa’s back in his house by Steve Collins ALICANTE’S annual Santa’s Grotto will be open from Wednesday December 6 and located in the Parque de la Ereta under the shadow of Alicante Castle. Santa Claus will once again be in the city centre to greet the children – and the young at heart – listening to what they want him to bring them this year and just double checking that they’ve been good and deserve a
visit from him in the early hours of Christmas Day. December 6 is the day of San Nicolás, not only the patron saint of children but also of Alicante itself, and so it’s a more than appropriate time to begin this year’s activities that will remain open throughout the December ‘bridge’ of holidays that last until Tuesday December 12. Santa Claus’ house will feature a wishing well where children can drop their requests to the man him-
self in writing and there will also be a programme of entertainment to keep everyone amused while waiting to meet him in person. All the young visitors will have a photograph taken with Santa, but organisers warn parents with young children that there may be waiting times for longer than an hour. Alicante council remind visitors that parking spaces around Santa’s House will be limited – especially if the sleigh and the reindeers are
already parked up – and it’s recommended that people walk up to the Ereta via the many routes from the old town. Opening times to visit the Santa Claus house are: December 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16 & 17: 12 midday to 8pm December 18 to 23 (inclusive): 12 midday to 6pm December 24 and 25: 10am to 2pm SANTA CLAUS: He’s back and ready to make Christmas wishes come true

11 SSHHHH: The new quieter sound of cleaning in Orihuela
Keeping the city cleaner and quieter by Glenn Scott ORIHUELA city council is now in possession of new cleaning equipment that will give residents of the municipality a quieter life. Councillor Dámaso Aparicio has himself demonstrated the new street blowing machines that have replaced the old noisy and petrol driven equivalents. Over a number of years, the council received hundreds of complaints about the noise the machines made, especially in the early mornings when sleep was being disturbed. Such was the annoyance that a separate Facebook page was es-
tablished to share people’s experiences. The new fully electric machines that run on batteries that have a life-span of about five years have been registered at only 60 decibels - the same as a hair-dryer – and will save petrol and maintenance costs. The old machines reached 100 decibels. Those operating the quieter blowers will also be more comfortable handling them as they weigh six kilos less. The environment also gets a boost as they have zero CO2 emissions too. Justifying the €21,000 expenditure on the new machines, the councillor said that the savings made on the petrol, oil and maintenance will mean that the outlay will have been returned with two years.
12 REDUCTION: The dedication and the long hours are becoming less attractive.
Market traders on the decline by Glenn Scott MURCIA region’s department of commerce is looking to fill a number of vacancies currently available on the weekly markets. There are presently 270 pitches free across the dozens of market places but those attempting to recruit more traders accept that there is less demand from potential stallholders. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Just ask those that have to get up very early in the morning in all kinds of weather and the amount of physical effort need-
ed to assemble and dismantle the stalls across 54 weekly markets in the region, and it is that dedication to being a market trader that is losing its appeal. The largest of those 50+ markets in Murcia is the Thursday one held in Avenida de La Fama in the city centre and features 628 separate pitches that concentrate on food, clothes, footwear and home accessories. Tuesday’s market in El Palmer is next on the list with 200 licensed positions followed by Santa María de Gracia (164); Sangonera la Verde (128); Puente Tocinos (114); Es-
pinardo (110); and Beniaján (108) In total, the commerce department currently grants 2,808 licenses across Murcia and confirm that there is a noticeable decline in their demand compared to previous years. The department are continually looking at ways to improve the weekly markets that are a major part of the day-today life of residents and tourists alike, and are considering a number of ideas at modernisation and also enhanced promotion of the markets via a series of media outlets.
Elderly residents in fire scare
FOUR people had to be treated by paramedics suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation in a fire at a shoe shop in Calle Junterones in Murcia. Fire broke out at 2.25pm and members of all three emergency services were mobilised after a number of 112 calls were made by local residents when they saw
the blaze taking control of the building. Three of the four people affected by the fire were taken to the Morales Meseguer Hospital in Murcia. They were two women aged 75 and 85 and another 44-year-old man. A 71year-old man was treated at the scene.
Illegal hunters identified thanks to local forum
GUARDIA Civil officers in the Murcia region have been able to identify and detain five people as alleged violators of regional hunting and fishing laws. They have been accused of hunting and killing a female wild boar and her 13 offspring following an attack with dogs that accompanied the suspected hunter. The investigations got underway when specialists
of the Service of Protection of Nature (SEPRONA) connected to the Guardia Civl received intelligence that people had taken part in these illegal hunting activities. This was mainly due to the collaboration with local people who discovered an internet forum devoted to hunting and saw a photograph showing an individual next to the bodies of several boars, offspring and five partridges.

WASTE NOT WANT NOT: Demolition waste is processed and sorted ready to reuse in new construction
by Glenn Scott RUBBLE from the old school building in Rojales that is currently being demolished will not go to waste. During a visit to the site, the Mayor of Rojales Antonio Pérez, accompanied by Councillor Vicente Ramírez, announced that some 2,200 cubic metres of rubble is being crushed by the contractors carrying out the demolition works with
a specially adapted modern piece of equipment. This converts the raw rubble into gravel and sand, and once treated is transferred to a central storage unit from where it can be reused at a later date in the construction of roads and pathways. The demolition of the school is due for completion at the end of this week and it’s hoped that the all-new education centre will be fully operational after Easter in 2018.
The municipal officials saw at first hand the progress being made on the replacement construction which includes the gymnasium being built on the now empty plot of land which will also see other sports facilities and playing fields. A major section of the new school building became fully functional at the beginning of this term which houses classrooms, offices, a teacher’s room, dining room and a library.

Women’s medical pioneer dies RIP: Manuela was laid to rest in Alcalá de Henares
by Lynn Whittaker MANUELA PÉREZ, the first female doctor to work at the Alicante General Hospital has died. She was 88 and passed away in Madrid. Pérez de Vekios was born in 1929 and began to work in the hospital in 1974. She began her career in the Spanish Health Service as a nurse practitioner and then as a midwife before later
studying medicine in Salamanca and then moved on to paediatrics in Paris. She returned and took up a post as a paediatrician in Bilbao and became one of the first women to work in the traditional male profession of a Navy doctor at Naviera Aznar. In the 1960s, she worked as a doctor involved with controlling epidemics in Venezuela and Brazil and studied tropical medicine and eventually specialising in anaesthetics. When she returned to Spain in 1974,
she started her career as an anaesthetist at the Alicante General Hospital and was committed to the fight for employment and women’s rights. Many of her friends and former colleagues mourned her passing across social media where, despite her advancing years Manuela Pérez was still very active. She spent long periods in Madrid where some of her family lived and she was finally laid to rest in Alcalá de Henares.
No autumn season... again
15
IT only seems a few short weeks ago when temperature levels along the Costa Blanca enabled many to experience an Indian summer. And now, in such a short space of time, winter has struck almost overnight for many and proved the theory held by many that there’s no real autumn in this part of Spain... it’s either summer or winter. Wednesday morning in Alicante city registered 5.8ºC and Benidorm was only slightly higher with 7ºC, although inland the town of Villena only reached -6ºC and awoke to frost. Spanish weather agency AEMET said that temperatures have only been recorded so low at this time of year four times previously. In the case of Alicante city, it’s the coldest temperature in ‘autumn’ since October 30, 2010 when 5.5ºC was registered.
16 AND STILL THEY COME: Alicante-Elche Airport up 4.2 per cent for October.
Airport certain to break 2016 passenger records by Steve Collins LATEST figures released show that Alicante-Elche Airport is on track to beat its previous passenger records. Data for the month of October showed total number of users at 1.3 million which represents an increase of 4.2 per cent compared to the same month last year. With just two months until the end of 2017, the airport forecasts that they will have no problem in exceeding last year’s record of 13 million. Between January
and October, Alicante-Elche Airport accounted for a total of 12.2 million passengers, representing an increase of 11.9 per cent over the same 10 month period last year, and at the same time handled 83,623 flights, 10.5 per cent more than the same time scale in 2016. Broken down by nationalities, the countries with the most passengers during the month of October were the United Kingdom, with 532,552 passengers; followed by Spain, (112,846); Germany,
(90,701); The Netherlands, (89,771); Norway, (73,570), and Belgium, (62,073). In terms of operations, the Alicante-Elche Airport handled 8,770 flights in October, which represents an increase of 4 per cent compared to last year. Flights connected with the following countries showed the greatest number: United Kingdom (3,265 flights), Spain (1,261), Germany (589), The Netherlands (543), Norway (437), Belgium (400) and finally Sweden (360).
River clean-up to help professional qualifications
ORIHUELA CITY COUNCIL has announced an investment of €900,000 to improve the banks and surroundings of the River Segura as it passes through the municipality. The project plans to take on 36 local people to help with the cleaning, restoring and general sprucing up of the area and, according to an announcement made by councillors Juan Ignacio
López-Bas and Víctor Valverde, the programme will last for 12 months and start at the beginning of 2018. Over half of the budget €583,000 – has come thanks to a grant from the Valencian Community, and at the end of the project those taking part can gain a professional certificate related to maintenance of gardens and other green areas and industrial painting.
Plan to rid the cactus invaders
A SPECIES of cactus found in the Guadalentín Valley in the Murcia region is putting native species at risk. Forestry officers have identified an area of 16.5 hectares of this invasive plant in the Totanera area of the Sierra Espuña in Aceña de Hierro that is now being planned for removal. The species in question, Cylin-
dropuntia tunicate, comes into conflict with the native flora in the area and threatens their future. Experts say that this is the largest recorded ‘invasion’ of a species of cactus known to have come from another country and is well-known in many South American countries that include Peru and Chile.

‘Beating’ victims fail to attend police trial by Glenn Scott THE trial of five local police officers from Torrevieja accused of torturing two burglars as they were in the act of robbing a house has been suspended again almost before it began. The victims failed to turn up on the first day. The Alicante Provincial Court in Elche was the venue for the trial where the prosecutor is requesting sentences between one and two years for a number of offences. These range from torture, failing to carry out their duties and
forging official documentation. Two other police officers are also being accused of being aware of what took place but not reporting the alleged offences. The final person accused was the former Partido Popular (PP) councillor who had responsibilities for the police in 2006 at the time of the crime, but had recently passed away. Prosecuting council gave the background to the events almost 12 years ago when a local police inspector discovered a burglary was taking place in his own home and so he alerted his colleagues and a number of patrols went

to his property. They immediately arrested two people allegedly connected with the breakin and removed them to the local police station where it’s alleged they were threatened, insulted and attacked by the officers. It is also alleged that some of the police accused altered the official report and changed their story so it appeared that the injuries that those in their custody suffered were accidental and not as a result of the alleged beatings. This is the fifth time that the case has been suspended.

The way I see it…
by
Harvey Mann The opinions published in Harvey’s weekly column are not necessarily representative of those of the publishers, advertisers or newspaper sponsors.
I’m getting bloody well fed up, day after day by the mainly so-called actresses, who have had little publicity lately, in the entertainment world, also women in business, politics, even women from normal walks of life, that have all of a sudden remembered that they were raped, or propositioned years ago. Now let me explain myself, I’m not a misogynist in any way, but it seems that Harvey “Willie Wonka” Weinstein who by all the evidence is a very dirty piece of work, has opened up the flood gates for this barrage of stories from women who claim that they have undergone historic assaults in years previously. Is it me, or are many of these women who are now making accusations trying to prove something? Have they had a bad relationship with their partners, husbands, or someone that they took a fancy to in the office or in the pub and were spurned by the man in question. Many years ago, when I travelled on the underground trains in London, as the train jolted and I accidently brushed up against a female, she did not slap me round my face, as I apologised, nor did she appear in the papers or on TV several years later claiming that I touched her up. Or the time I called out of my open window from my car, “excuse me madam am I going the right way to so, and so”. She did not call back saying, you’re going the right way, for a clip round the ear. Has the world gone mad, or have women decided in many cases that they are rightly fed up with men ogling them or smiling at them, oh! how I long for the good old days when men used to doff their hats smile at a woman and say good morning madam, these days if you did that, you would get an earful of expletives from a girl who got so drunk the night before she ended up in bed with some you young oik who looked like

a fire extinguisher. Then again in my research for this column, I have discovered young ladies of today like to take the lead, they stand in groups eyeing up the men, talking amongst themselves of the possibilities of the man’s libido? Or size? Does he have a six pack? Sometimes that is when some of the young ladies of today are still sober enough to stand, or to take their clothes off. Hang on! now it’s the men’s turn, young men are now coming forward telling how they were assaulted or propositioned by other men, take the latest accusation against Kevin Spacey and Dustin Hoffman both brilliant actors, Spacy was known as having the Rock Hudson syndrome, the handsome actor who died of
aids, who went cruising around Hollywood at night picking up men, sometimes as many as 6 at a time. And now Westminster has been rocked by the resignation of the Minister of Defence Sir Michael Fallon after he had admitted putting his hand on the knee of a female journalist he had known, when explaining some point, at a party. What a load of rubbish, what has the world come too, next someone will get arrested for hugging his son, or kissing his daughter on the cheek. So, when will all this historic nonsense stop? Is it money or fame? A picture in the newspapers or on TV? It may bring you money or notoriety, I’m glad that I’m so ugly no one has ever accosted me.

A bit of revision Basic Spanish for everyday needs by
Jane Cronin
Those of you who have been following this series will have noticed that, bit by bit, we have covered the changes that are made to a Spanish verb depending on who is controlling the action of that verb; that is whether “I” do something, or “you”, or “we” or “they”, and so on. Just to put all of this into some kind of perspective, I would like to point out three things. Firstly we have been looking exclusively at the present tense, we are not yet talking about the past or future, although we can express the future with our forms expressing intention: voy a, (I’m going to) vas a, (you’re going to) va a (he or she is going to) vamos a (we are going to) van a (they are going to) combining them with an infinitive verb as we have already seen. Secondly, we have not yet looked in any detail at the exact patterns involved in changing all these verbs. These are not difficult as such, but
into play once these things are studied in depth, but as this form does not exist in the English language, at this stage of learning it can create more difficulties than it solves and the fact is that we can get an awful long way in communicating without using it at all. So, before we move on at all to anything new, let’s play around a bit with what we’ve already got. We haven’t done much translation for a while, so here’s a little homework task, the answers to which will appear in next week’s issue. As usual I may throw the odd word in that hasn’t appeared in an article before, but I feel you should cope with this either by using guesswork or, I find that using a dictionary can be extremely helpful! Also, If you would like to e-mail your answers to me you can do so at janejcronin@gmail.com
they take a bit of time and effort to explain properly. However, I believe it is more important to start you off understanding the basic principles of why these changes take place and to give you some useable examples to be going on with in the real world. Thirdly, those of you who know a little bit more grammar will have noticed that I have omitted one of the present tense forms, that is the plural “you” form, otherwise known as the second person plural. Again, this obviously comes
Tengo una gata siamesa. ¿Tienes mascotas? That should keep you busy for a while at least. Remember to be careful about which form each verb is in. Jack Reacher
The Midnight Line by Lee Child
JACK REACHER takes an aimless stroll past a pawn shop in a small Midwestern town. In the window he sees a West Point class ring from 2005. It’s tiny. It’s a woman cadet’s graduation present to herself. Why would she give it up? Reacher’s a West Pointer too, and he knows what she went through to get it. Reacher tracks the ring back to its owner, step by step, down a criminal trail leading west. Like Big Foot come out of the forest, he arrives in the deserted wilds of Wyoming. All he wants is to find the woman. If she’s OK, he’ll walk away. If she’s not ...he’ll stop at nothing. He’s still shaken by the recent
horrors of Make Me, and now The Midnight Line sees him set on a raw and elemental quest for simple justice. Best advice: don’t get in his way. Readers have been following the nail-biting exploits of Jack Reacher since he first loped into town in Killing Floor in 1997, a striking figure standing at 6ft5 all dirty-blond hair, with a chip on his shoulder and a lethal ability. His creator Lee Child lays claim to the fact that every second somewhere in the world somebody buys one of his novels. He starts every new novel on the same date, the 1 September, and has managed to keep fans coming back for more every time, he says of thriller-writing “It’s the only real genre and all the other stuff has grown on the side of it like barnacles.”

They’re all together now
The International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War, December 1936 - January 1937
George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway had much in common with my father, Patrick. The three fought in the same war in the frontlines and in the case of the latter were good friends. So, I suppose all three were qualified to comment on conflicts that occur between men. The American war correspondent held the view that “No one man nor group of men incapable of fighting or exempt from fighting should in any way be given the power to put this country or any country into war.” It is difficult to disagree with fellow Republican the English journalist George Orwell. “Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self-defense against a homicidal maniac. One of the most horrible features of war is that all the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting.” Such were my thoughts when my wife and I spent Remembrance Sunday in Albacete. In this lovely Spanish city was situated the headquarters of the International Brigades during Spain’s Civil War. My Irish-American father fought with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. The attrition rate was high; of 2,800 Americans 681 lost their lives. The band of brothers comment was; “They gave me a gun and 100 bullets and sent me to fight.” Used as shock troops the Brigade suffered a 22.5% loss. During the Battle of Jarama, February 27, 1937, the unit lost two-thirds of its
strength. Of the 600 men who fought handto-hand to secure Suicide Hill only 160 survived. Today, the Legions’ Albacete headquarters has gone but here and there are the places familiar to my father. The staff at Historico Archivo was friendly and fascinated by father’s letters, photos, documents. The mementos included a postcard to my mother from the firebrand premier Dolores Ibarruri. Had Spain fallen to the Stalin-backed Republicans no doubt it would be today free and on a par with other post-Soviet countries. Hence my own thoughts They´re All Together Now And now they’re all together, Their differences are gone, No longer does it matter, If they lost or if they won; Such foolishness is easy led, They believed when they had read, The lies of wicked men. They now share soil, for which they fought, Once foes now sleep in peace, I hope they’re as they were to me, Before these lambs to fleece, Were sent to meet their youthful end, Once enemies but now they’re friends, They’re all together now.

A Lapse in Time by
Colin Bird The opinions published in Colin’s weekly column are not necessarily representative of those of the publishers, advertisers or newspaper sponsors.
Every framed print or painting on display in our house depicts a time in our lives that brings back fond memories. None of the pictures are of high monetary value, but from an emotional point of view, each and every one is a treasure. One or two represent gifts from close friends here in Spain, whilst there are depictions from our individual past lives and many more since our time together. In particular we have a number that were painted by a Bermudian artist friend and are representations of scenes from those beautiful islands, where the Princess and I first met. At this time of year, I take a nostalgic look at the collection of pantomime posters that decorate one side of the stair well – eighteen in all – each with its own mini catalogue of stories to tell. On the other side a collection of prints and sketches of a particular area in Cornwall where I spent two happy years of my life, that include a framed facsimile of a Great Western Railway poster for the town of Looe where I lived. A portrait in pastels of my wife executed by my best friend, and a very special painting by my late Dad of Dunster village in Somerset, are just two of the other reminders of our past lives. But in one of our guest bedrooms, there hangs a tiny unprepossessing pencil drawing of a thatched cottage that has a special significance. Unsigned by the artist, but bearing the legend ‘Wickhambrook 27/6/53’ in one corner.
It was spotted in a junk shop by a friend some years ago, and he immediately recognised it as the house where we had lived since 1976, and he purchased the drawing for a pound. The 27th June 1953 was a Saturday, I checked, and was the day an unknown artist decided to sketch a pretty little cottage known then as ‘Grimwoods’. The fascination for me is not so much what the drawing portrays, but what it does not, because as the artist applied pencil to paper, a skinny
seven year boy was probably playing in the back garden on a council estate in Berkshire; artist and boy totally oblivious of the others’ existence. And yet many years later the boy and his wife would be the owners of that same house and spend three happy decades of their lives there. So as I look at the picture, I also think of myself and the invisible silver cord that even then linked me and that unknown Suffolk artist. If walls could only speak, people sometimes say. Ours do. In volumes.

Established for over seven years, Your Blinds In Spain offer a comprehensive and varied range of all types of blinds and window coverings. Whether you’re looking for something to keep the sun out, for added privacy, or for decorative purposes, they have it all. Their electronic roller blinds are perfect for modern living and lovers of technology and their ceiling pleated blinds work wonders in preventing conservatories becoming greenhouse-like. Owner Tom Cotter said Your Blinds In Spain was founded from his own need to purchase quality blinds for the frontage of his previous business. Struggling to find anything within a reasonable price range, he researched the market extensively to find what he was looking for and realised many others were experiencing the same problem. The rest is history, as they say and Your Blinds In Spain has since provided blinds and window coverings to hundreds of happy customers.
They import and source the products from all over the UK, Spain and France, meaning they know the industry inside out and can provide their customers the biggest choice of the best products available. Unsure of what you need? Tom offers a free on-site quotation and will be able to advise on the right blind or window covering for you, with fabric roller blinds, vertical blinds, venetian and pleated blinds, all coming made to measure in a range of colours and designs. Your Blinds In Spain also supplies to businesses and commercial properties. All blinds and window coverings come with a year’s guarantee and help is always at hand as the company aim to provide the best customer service possible. Awnings and canopies can be supplied as well as balustrades which are becoming increasingly popular. Your Blinds In Spain also do bathrooms and kitchens and an impressive showroom can be seen at the Zoco market every Sunday.
At the Lemon Tree Market Your Blinds In Spain is home to ‘Home of Glass’ showing examples of glass curtains, glass roofing, doors and pool guards. For those looking for a stylish and modern feel, glass really is the way forward. Glass curtains fit together without intrusive framework allowing undisturbed views and can be installed on balconies, terraces, façades and entrances, bringing the outside in.
For more information or to browse Your Blinds In Spain’s offering, head to the Zoco Market or the Lemon Tree Market this Sunday or call 965 701 984 or 658 338 123. Alternatively visit www.yourblindsinspain.com

legal My partner and I have been together for decades, Q but we are not married. What are our rights with regards to inheritance and inheritance tax?
by
IGNACIO PELLICER MOLLĂ & PEDRO HEREDIA ORTIZ
LAWYERS
A
If a couple are not married they have no claim to inherit any share of their partner’s assets. In addition, inheritance tax will be higher between couples who are not married than their married counterparts. In the first instance the most important aspect is to draw up and sign a will, carefully dividing your assets in the manner that you wish to. Please remember to state in your will the European legislation that allows you more or even free disposal of you assets. Otherwise the Spanish law will apply.
If you have any further questions about this or any other legal matter, please do not hesitate to contact us; we have a team of experts standing by to assist you in any way we can. Call 965 480 737 or email info@pellicerheredia.com Videos at www.pellicerheredia.com

Ant and Dec reunited in the jungle ANTHONY MCPARTLIN and Declan Donnelly are reuniting for the launch of this years I´m a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! Ant recently returned to work after a stay in a rehabilitation centre in the US, where he underwent treatment for an addiction to prescription painkillers. The duo were apart for most of the summer following Ant´s decision to come clean about his addiction earlier this year, which developed after a botched knee operation in 2014 resulted in him being prescribed pain killers for a prolonged period. The two recently flew into Brisbane together to start preparations for this seasons filming. “I’m excited to be back, I can’t wait. It’s going to be a good show. I’m feeling
great. The flight was alright, I had a lot of sleep and me and Dec had a good catchup. I’m looking forward to spending more time with him. “It’s brilliant to be back together, it’s perfect. Everything just slotted back into place. We can’t wait and
we’re raring to go. We are really excited. “We’ll have the same old shenanigans, but with a few little added twists. We just can’t wait to get in and get going now. We’ve been waiting for ages, it’s been a long summer break so we can’t wait.”

health Time to change... for the better
ROBERT LANGSTON knew he had to change his life. He was 37, weighed 16.2 stone (103kg) and couldn’t walk down his local high street without losing his breath. He had diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma, and knew that his poor diet and a lack of physical activity had contributed to his condition. Robert, a painter-decorator from Walsall, Staffordshire, had been unfit to work for several years. He had been in and out of hospital with ill health. He contacted Time to Change, an exercise advice scheme run by Walsall Council’s Sport and Leisure Development Services in partnership with NHS Walsall, which he had read about. The scheme helps people raise their activity levels gradually. He began the exercise classes Time to Change recommended. Twelve months later, Robert has turned his life around. He’s lost more than 3 stone (20kg), improved his health and returned to full-time employment. “I wanted my life back,” says Robert, now 38. “I was on heavy medication for asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure.” The fitness classes, known as PACE, involved an hour a week of circuit
training, which alternates short bursts of intensive exercise with rest. “I went to the exercise classes once a week and slowly the weight started to come off,” says Robert. “As I saw the results, I got more and more into it.” Within weeks of beginning his new active lifestyle, Robert’s asthma improved and his better general health meant he needed less medication. After six months, he had enough confidence to leave the scheme and go to the gym on his own, and has also stuck with his healthy eating regime, eating plenty of fruit and vegetables. “I haven’t been on a crash diet or anything like that,” he says. “I’m just eating the right stuff in the right quantities. It’s never too late to turn your health around,” says Robert. “I was in pretty bad shape before I decided I wanted to change.”
Artichoke for a healthy digestion of fats The artichoke (cynara scolymus) is a thistle-like plant with big round flowers that can reach a height of 2 metres. Most of us know the artichoke as a delicious vegetable of which only the heart and the fleshy parts of the petals are eaten. It originated in the Mediterranean area, where it has been known for hundreds of years as a natural aid in the digestion of fatty substances and also as a remedy against flatulence and bloatedness. However, it is not the edible parts of the artichoke that are used as a natural remedy, but its leaves and roots. These contain a bitter substance (Cynarin) that has a stimulating effect on the digestive system and the metabolism, improving the function of the pancreas, gall bladder and liver. A well-functioning fat digestion and a healthy metabolism is essential for wellbeing and health. More than 30% of people suffer from digestive problems with bloating, flatulence,
nausea, cramp-like pain and embarrassing stomach rumblings in the stomach. Often this can be attributed to a poor digestion of fats. Artichoke extract improves the bile function. Scientific studies show that already shortly after the ingestion of artichoke extract, a significant rise of bile acid production occurs. The increased quantity of bile acid in the digestive system improves the fat digestion and the above mentioned ailments. Artichoke extract can also specially aid a weight control diet by improving especially the digestion of fatty nutrients. Artichoke extract also has a positive effect on elevated cholesterol levels. New scientific studies show that artichoke extract has an inhibiting effect on the cholesterol biosynthesis, reduces blood cholesterol levels and hinders the LDLcholesterol oxidation. Artichoke extract stimulates the production of gastric juices and reduces feelings
of nausea, sickness and bloatedness. Tests with concentrated artichoke extract have shown surprisingly good results in the detoxication of the liver as well as in the lowering of cholesterol and lipid levels. Because of its wide range of effects on digestion and cholesterol levels, the artichoke protects the body against strain or damage such as often results from poor eating habits. it is presently believed that the artichoke is an excellent and well tolerated natural aid for relieving excess strain in the digestive process. It is recommended that artichoke extract be taken as a food supplement over a prolonged period or even on a permanent basis.

Whiten yellow nails
That red polish may look great when it’s on, but the yellow tint it leaves on your nails looks anything but. 1. Bleach nails in a solution of 1 tablespoon of 3 per cent hydrogen peroxide mixed with 2 1/2 tablespoons of baking soda in a small plastic bowl. 2. Use a cotton swab to press some of the mixture (it should achieve a paste-like consistency) firmly under the tip of each nail as well as over the top of the nail, covering all the nails on one hand. 3. Allow the mixture to remain in place for about three minutes before rinsing with warm water. 4. Repeat with other hand! Try this treatment every six to eight weeks. Or, soak your tips in denture cleaner for about five minutes. For a super-speedy fix, use a nail-whitening pencil under your tips for a brighter look.

Puzzles Code Breaker
Karma will deal with things now, and your instincts were right all along! This intuitive energy has solved a problem and rewarded you by allowing you to see just how special you are; and exactly how those gifts could now be put to good use. Remember that for you this is the start, and knowing where this could take you will open doors!
Word Pyramid
5
Mercury and Mars vie, but good fortune is a blessing and Mars brings solution and strength through endeavour and quick thinking. If you feel that someone needs a shoulder to cry on then remember that you were strong enough to turn things around; but that others will maybe have to learn their lesson the hardest possible way.
WORD fit
Using just logic, can you make all the words fit correctly into the grid?
The New Moon arrives this week, closely followed by the entry of the Sun. You will feel the rebirth and ready to take on anything that comes your way! With such a tender and emotive New Moon you couldn’t wish for a better time to take a step in a different direction, as you bring in the new, and dump the old unnecessary ties!
Enjoy all new and wonderful experiences this week, but whatever you do keep your ear to the ground as some help is on the way for you! Know when to stand your ground, and remember that you have a natural right to see things going your way....... and it’s about time for it too. Dig up all that hidden emotion, while you are at it, as well!
E
Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 11 represents H and 18 represents Z. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.
It’s a done deal, but nothing is written in stone. What you need now is to take some time to get your head together whilst taking a break that allows you to see things from a different angle. Recent pressures have weighed heavily on your conscious but it is time to put everything in order and tell others that you are not to be messed with!
Time to call in a favour, as you need the boost that will see you truly getting what you deserve right now. With options exercised and your needs met, it is time to turn a corner and there will be no going back this time. Set your sights and aim high now, because waiting around for something to happen is not your chosen way of operating.
T
There is 1x9 letter word and 150 others! Make as many 3 or more letter words as you can using any letter combination just once and you must use the central letter in every word!
The Cosmos is geared up to pass on some very positive energies right now. As you best know, your way ahead is paved with open doors and opportunities now that you have started believing in yourself. Both Mars and Pluto have conflict in the midweek squaring that sees them fighting your corner, but giving you a run for your money!
Mars illuminates the tenth house of work and commerce this week, and it seems as if you have a foot in the door; which could prove to be a lifeline for you. With Mars in Libra, this is the right time to take a risk that will prove to be the icing on your cake, as your career is in the spotlight and Mars departs, for two years, early December.
I
N
Word Wheel
You have such little time to make a mighty decision that will affect others and change your modus operandi. Taking into account current pressures you are entitled to stall for time and yet enabled to hear both sides of the matter before you make a judgment. Mars squares with Pluto, and balance will restore if you play it by ear.
Work sees you taking some new responsibilities, and this will allow you to show others just what you are capable of if you are left to your own devices. Part of your charm is your adaptability and your foresight, and if this can win you some brownie points then you should take centre stage. After all it is where you deserve to be now.
O
Start at a letter and spell out a 10-letter word by moving to adjacent letters. Each letter will be used at least once, but no letter will be used twice in a row.
Sudden good fortune of a financial nature comes your way this week, courtesy of the Venus trine with Pluto. This trine has a double connotation, which connects with both mystical beauty and innermost interpretation to arouse your innermost spiritual energies. Many around you are in need right now, but they will not be forgotten!
Beware of what may be behind a recent request, and be unafraid that in this instance you may not be the best person to help. Mercury sextiles Mars and you may find that you are kept busy nearer to home, as somebody is about to move the goalposts to keep you interested in just what it is they feel that they can really offer you right now.

Mystical Postbag Kenny, I am looking to change my life around. I have brought up my family as a single parent, after their father died, and now I want to take Holy Orders and join a Convent. My children think that this means I am leaving them, but I have the calling. I know I have to do this, but I can't bear it when they get upset with me. Kristin O. Kristin, you are thinking of yourself for a change and that's not wrong. This is your time and if you need to be true to yourself then you
have to do what it is you feel is right. I think this is not an admission to a closed order, but one that will use your significant skills. I know that you can enter as a Noviciate and that will mean a year or so in contemplation before finalising your vows. Take this time, be sure, but do tell your family that you will never stop loving them. Be you, be sure.... give it a try. Things will work out, and may God bless you!
For Birthday Celebrants Much fulfilment is out there, and fate and destiny will both work for you rather than against you, if you just let them in. Believe, and above all you will be counting your blessings in the astrological year ahead!

The purpose of the game is to discover the digits hidden inside the board’s cells; each cell is filled with a digit between 1 and 6. On each row and column each digit appears exactly once; therefore, when revealed, the digits of the board form a so-called Latin square. The board may also contain some inequalities between the board cells; these inequalities must be respected and can be used as clues in order to discover the remaining hidden digits. ie > is greater than and < is less than.

Seafood curry
Ingredients 75g ghee (you can substitute with margarine) 300g skinless white fish like pollack, cut into large chunks 200g skinless salmon, cut into large chunks 200g raw peeled prawn 100g mussels, cleaned and debearded For the curry sauce 1 onion, roughly chopped 100g ginger, chopped
Lamb Korma
Ingredients 2 & 1/4 pounds cubed lamb meat, 4 teaspoons olive oil, divided, 1 brown onion, chopped. 1 red potato, peeled and cubed, 1/2 cup curry powder, 1/2 cup water, 1/3 cup coconut milk, 1/3 cup drained canned chickpeas Preparation Preparation time – 10 minutes. Cooking time – 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Method 1. Place lamb in a bowl and drizzle 2 teaspoons olive oil over lamb; stir until coated. 2. Heat remaining 2 teaspoons olive oil in a saucepan over low heat; cook and stir
50ml vegetable oil 2 tsp garam masala ½ tsp asafoetida (if you have it) 1 tsp turmeric 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped (leave the seeds in if you like it really hot) 400g can chopped tomatoes good handful coriander leaves Method 1. For the curry sauce, whizz the onion and ginger together to a purée. Heat the oil in a large pan until smoking. Add the garam marsala and sizzle for 30 secs, then add the onion and ginger purée, reduce the heat and slowly cook
onion until softened, 10 to 15 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat and add potato to onion. 3. Heat a large frying pan over medium heat; cook and stir lamb, working in small batches, until browned, about 5 minutes per batch. Transfer browned lamb to onion mixture. 4. Stir curry into lamb-onion mixture and cook over medium heat for 1 minute. Add water to lamb-onion mixture and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover saucepan, and simmer until lamb is cooked through and potatoes are tender, about 45 minutes. 5. Mix coconut milk and chickpeas into lamb-onion mixture and simmer until heated through, about 5 minutes.
for 5 mins. Add the remaining spices, fry for 1 min, stir in the chilli and fry for another min, then add the tomatoes and a good pinch of salt and grind of pepper, and stir well. You can do this way in advance, then just throw the curry together on the night – the sauce will freeze or keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. 2. To make the curry, melt a third of the ghee in a large pan. Cook the white fish for 2-3 mins until lightly browned, then set aside on a plate. Repeat this process with the salmon and prawns, adding another third of ghee each time. For the mussels, heat a medium-
sized saucepan on a high heat. Add the mussels with 2 tbsp of water, cover tightly with a lid, and steam for 3-4 mins, shaking the pan every so often. Drain and set aside with the other seafood. 3. Bring the sauce to the boil, stir the fish and mussels in gently, bring to the boil again, then remove from the heat and leave for 3-4 mins – the fish will finish cooking in the heat from the sauce. Add the coriander leaves and serve with Spiced rice and Carrot & cumin salad.

How to make a birdseed wreath Make clever use out of a Bundt pan by creating a pretty gelatine-birdseed feeder for your feathered friends. MATERIALS • • • • •
3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup warm water 3 tablespoons light corn syrup 1 package unflavoured gelatine 4 cups bird food (such as seeds, peanuts, berries, dried fruits) • Bundt pan or other mould • Non-stick cooking spray
Step 1:
Mix up edible glue Stir the gelatine into the warm water until dissolved. Whisk in the corn syrup and flour. Stir well, until there are no more lumps. It will make a thick gooey paste.
Step 2:
Stir in bird seed Mix the seeds with the paste in a large bowl, using a spatula to stir and fold until all of the seeds are coated and the edible glue is distributed. The mixture will start getting very sticky. Make sure it’s well mixed to keep the wreath from falling apart.
Step 3:
Mould wreath
Spray the Bundt pan with non-stick cooking spray. Using the spatula, press the seed mixture into the Bundt pan. Be sure to press the mixture down firmly until it’s well packed and even. Set the pan aside overnight. The mixture will harden and turn white, and the surface will be firm and dry when it’s ready. Test by pressing gently on the surface,
and allow more setting time if it’s at all soft.
Step 4:
Add finishing touches Once the wreath is hard, gently remove it from the mould by turning it upside down onto a plate. Tie ribbons, garnish with sprigs of greenery or berries, and hang it for the birds to enjoy!
3 reasons why gardening is the therapy for you
IT’S TIME to whip out your gardening gloves because not only are digging and weeding great exercise, a good stint of gardening boosts mental health, too. Recent research carried out by Harvard University found that people living in an area rich in vegetation have improved physical and mental health. Professor Tim Lang, Centre for Food Policy at City University London, says it’s widely recognised that regular contact with plants, animals and the natural environment can improve our physical health and mental wellbeing. GPs in London have already started to prescribe gardening time, with the help of Lambeth GP Food Co-operative. 1. Soil is an antidepressant Soil has been found to have similar effects on the brain as antidepressants to lift mood. A study by the University of Bristol and colleagues at University College London looked at how mice exposed to ‘friendly’ bacteria normally found in soil, altered their behaviour in a similar way to that produced by an antidepressant. When the team looked closely at the brains of mice, they found treatment with the bacteria Mycobacterium vaccae activated a group of neurons that produce the brain chemical serotonin, which regulates mood. Gardeners inhale the bacteria and have physical contact with it. The natural effects of the soil bacteria
can be felt for up to three weeks, if the experiments with rats are any indication. 2. It boosts brain health Gardening exercises your mind as well as your body. It utilises several our brain functions and includes learning, problem solving and sensory awareness, keeping our minds active. Several studies have shown the benefits of therapeutic gardens for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s. The charity Thrive uses gardening to help people with a range of mental health problems, including soldiers experiencing posttraumatic stress. Its recent research with early-onset dementia patients showed that, over a year, participants’ memory and concentration remained unchanged, but that mood and sociability improved. 3. It incorporates mindfulness You might feel too busy for mindfulness, but research shows it can have a huge impact on your stress levels, helping to stave off anxiety, slash depression risk, boost productivity and ease insomnia. Hilda Burke, psychotherapist, says that gardening is an activity that seems to help a lot of people get into a ‘flow’ state. This means that you don’t notice the time passing, aren’t simultaneously thinking over other things, making plans or rehashing the past. As such it helps people both to switch off to other stuff and switch on to the present moment. In other words, to be more mindful.

Silver takes first place in used car colour choice THE UK’S used car market declined for a second consecutive quarter in Q3, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) but overall 2017 remains level. 2,102,078 second hand cars changed hands from July to September, representing a fall of 2.1 per cent. Year-to-date, the market remained at record levels after a bumper first quarter, with more than 6.3 million buyers opting for a used car in the first nine months of 2017 – a 0.1 per cent increase. In the latest quarter, superminis extended their reign as the most popular vehicle segment, taking a third of the market (33.6 per cent). However, SUVs and minis were the only segments to show growth – up 11.2 per cent and 1.3 per cent respectively, reflecting new car market trends. Meanwhile, silver continued to be Britain’s number one used car colour, closely followed by black, which – following new car buying patterns – grew its appeal by 0.8 per cent. Blue, grey and white made up the rest of the top five used car colours. In Q3 more motorists also took advantage of the wide range of alternatively fuelled hybrid and electric cars now entering the second hand market, with registrations rising 17.0 per cent to 25,196 units. Pure electric vehicles, in particular, proved increasingly popular, with sales up 66.4 per cent. And while petrol sales fell 6.5 per cent, demand for diesels remained healthy, rising 4.2 per cent. In the year to date, more than 2.5

million used diesel cars have changed hands. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “The used car sector remains in good health as motorists take advantage of some great deals on cars, including some of the latest low emission diesel and alternatively fuelled vehicles. However, as demand in the new car market cools, used car sales normally follow suit unless there are significant tax changes affecting the new car market. Fleet renewal is the fastest way to improve air quality, however, so we need economic and political certainty to boost buyer confidence and keep both markets moving.”

motoring Traffic lights for motorways plan TESTS have begun this week on an innovative, pilot project designed to reduce congestion along the M62 near Warrington in Cheshire. Highways England is delivering the project at Croft Interchange - where junction 21a of the M6 meets junction 10 of the M62 – to give drivers smoother and more reliable journeys along the eastbound M62, one of the busiest commuter congestion hotspots in the region. When the testing is completed in December / January, electronic information signs and variable mandatory speed limits on the M62, will combine with traffic lights on the motorway link roads from the M6, to provide smoother traffic flows. Andy Withington, Highways England’s programme delivery manager for the North West, said: “This is an opportunity to combine existing technology and traffic management systems in a novel way to see whether we can give drivers using the frequently congested

eastbound M62, lower journey times during peak hours and smoother, more reliable journeys. “Once the system is fully up and running we’ll be monitoring its use over a period of up to a year. If it is successful – and we believe it will be – it could well be used on other motorway to motorway link roads across the country.” The new motorway to
motorway system will be introduced in 2 phases. The electronic variable message signs will be introduced first and drivers travelling between junction 9 and junction 11 of the eastbound M62 will start to see the signs in operation displaying mandatory variable speed limits and other information such as warnings of congestion. The second phase of the
scheme will see the traffic lights switched on at the end of the link roads onto the eastbound M62. Traffic leaving the M6 will be closely monitored and the lights will be controlled to minimise queuing onto the M6. The £7 million construction project involved installing some of the largest gantries ever used in the region to carry the signs – crossing up to 10 lanes of traffic.

Seatbelt t-shirt wearers warned
THE Guardia Civil have warned of the dangers to your life – and to your wallet – for wearing an increasing popular design of T-shirt when driving. The shirt’s design includes a diagonal black stripe across a white background that simulates a safety belt and is being used by many safety-last drivers to deceive the traffic cameras. The T-shirt has been advertised on a well-known website in different sizes and without promoting the price under the phrase of, “Funny anti-fines T-shirt. It simulates the seat belt for those that don’t want the hassle or
are in a hurry. Ideal as a gift, a joke and perfect for parties.” Guardia Civil officers emphasises that wearing a seatbelt is key to saving lives and warns that 23 per cent of deaths in accidents are caused by people not wearing them. Penalties for not wearing a seatbelt can be as high as €200 and 3 points off the driver’s license. This fake T-shirt isn’t a new phenomenon however as, back in 2012 there was an increase in the number of fines for people not wearing seat belts following a warning from Chinese authorities of the proliferation of these shirts.

The MG ZS – buy one car, get three driving modes free ENGINEERS at MG Motor UK have worked tirelessly to engineer the game-changing MG ZS Compact-SUV for a British audience. Completely reassessed and modified from the bottom-up, the dynamic ride, improved functionality and digital connectivity have been a key priority to ensure the MG ZS meets the sophisticated requirements of the UK market. Mature, refined and agile, the MG ZS is a car that has been developed by UK engineers, on UK roads for UK drivers. Such attention to detail is shown in the introduction of key performance elements to the car. With three power-assisted steering modes on the Excite and Exclusive models – Urban, Normal and Dynamic – drivers can personalise the ride that is suited completely to their needs. Featuring characteristics that deliver a tangible difference in drive, the steering of MG ZS has been considered at every level to create a nimble and adaptive driving experience. The Urban mode provides a lighter steering option that is designed for town-based journeys, parking and low-speed driving, while the Dynamic option allows the driver to do less to maximise vehicle performance, with an increased steering effort and higher damping effect to enhance the driver experience at higher speeds. The MG Normal mode creates a responsive drive that suits UK conditions and is completely in tune with suspension set-up and specific vehicle dynamics of the MG ZS. Engineers have also been able to reduce emissions and further improve ride dynamics by specifying exclusive 17” alloy wheels on the Excite and Exclusive models, which deliver an exceptional balance between ride comfort and dynamic performance. The UK-specific package of tyres, springs, dampers and the overall suspension has been tuned to suit UK driving styles and British roads, while maintaining an overall com-

mitment to ride quality, handling balance and increased agility. Chief Engineer on the project at MG Motor UK, Richard Batho, commented: “The MG ZS is mature, refined and agile. We have taken great pride in evolving this car, creating a model that suits the needs of UK drivers. We are particularly proud of the drive and quality of the MG ZS; we believe we’ve created a package that is a step up from anything we’ve produced before
and incredibly competitive in the Compact-SUV space.” Fitted with a 1.5 DOHC VTI-tech, four-cylinder engine with smooth and responsive five-speed manual gearbox, or a 1.0 GDI turbocharged, three-cylinder, automatic version, the MG ZS offers a dynamic driving experience. The five-speed manual gearbox provides seamless transitions and smooth handling, while the six-speed automatic variant is designed to further increase driveability.

A great extra day’s racing
AT THE request of the competitors after the racing on November 5th, the SAMM Race Committee added an extra day to the scheduled program on Sunday November 12th to make the most of the continuing fine weather. 9 boats came to the start line for the morning race at 11.30. As the wind was off shore a figure of eight course was set with upwind leg between marks two and three for safety. It almost became a procession with the order of the Topaz followed in turn by Shoestrings Tres and Dos then the Laser Radial and Shoestring Uno continued to the finish. The afternoon race was more exciting. Just before the start The Topaz capsized
twice due to gear problems but managed to start in the middle of the pack. There was controversy over a call for “Water” at the first mark which resulted in an official protest. The Laser 1 had to retire during lap 2 due to gear failure and was towed to the shore by the support boat. The Topaz again capsized during lap 2 when a sudden 90 degree wind shift from NW to SW caught out many boats. The mornings procession was almost repeated but in the order Shoestring Tres, Dos, Topaz, Uno, Laser Radial although the Radial managed to overhaul Uno during lap 3. The protest was heard after racing had finished when it was determined that the boat calling for water had not achieved the desired
overlap required under the rules so his protest was unfounded. After handicaps were applied the winning order for both races was. 1st Topaz Duo, Julian Singleton. 2nd Shoestring Tres, Tug Wilson. 3rd Shoestring Dos, John Down. The Shoestring boats are both Laser 2000’s.

Last Friday and Tuesday England earned two creditable 0-0 draws with world champions Germany and Brazil, both at Wembley in front of 84,000+ crowds. In the two games, manager Gareth Southgate gave debuts to goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, Joey Gomez, Jack Cork, Tammy Abraham, Dominic Solanke and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The latter was named ‘Man of the Match’ against Germany when England fielded the most inexperienced team regards to caps won (37) since 1980. It was also their first goalless home draw in seven years and the first against Germany since 1982. Both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have bowed out of next year’s World Cup in Russia, ousted by Switzerland (1-0) and Denmark (5-1) in their twolegged play-off encounters. And Sweden dumped out four-time winners Italy 1-0. The Italians haven’t missed a World Cup in sixty years!
Last Saturday, a 20-year-old football record was broken by goalkeeper Paul Bastock (aged 47) who surpassed ex-England stopper Peter Shilton’s feat of 1,249 competitive club appearances by helping Wisbech beat Thetford 4-1 in the FA Vase.

In Adelaide, England’s cricketers (293/207-9 declared) won their friendly against an Australia XI (233-9 declared/75) by 192 runs. Mark Stoneman hit two halfcenturies, while Chris Woakes took six wickets. The first Test starts on 23 November. Aussie Mitchell Starc entered the record books last week by taking two hat-tricks in the same game, for NSW against Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield. Also down under, England’s women kept their Ashes Series alive by drawing their last game against Australia. Host captain Elise Perry (who also plays football by the way) smashed a world record 215 not-out in her country’s innings of 448-9 declared. The next match (a T20 bash) is today which England must win! Home favourite Marc Marquez came third in the Spanish MotoGP in Valencia last Sunday to clinch his fourth world title in five years. F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, starting from the back of the grid, finished fourth in the Brazilian Grand Prix, behind Sebastian Vettel (winner), Valterri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen The final race is in Abu Dhabi on 28 November. In Rugby League’s World Cup, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are out but England are into the quarter-finals and will play Papua New Guinea on Sunday for a place in the semis. There were Rugby Union wins last weekend for England 21-8 v Argentina, Ireland 38-3 v South Africa and Scotland 44-38 v Samoa but Wales lost 29-21 to Australia. This weekend it’s England-Australia, Ireland-Fiji, Scotland-New Zealand & Wales-Georgia. Top PL football matches coming up include Arsenal-Tottenham, Leicester-Manchester City, Manchester United-Newcastle & WBA-Chelsea, and we could see the 20,000th PL goal scored (since 1992). Also, it’s Burton-Sheffield United and Reading-Wolves (Championship); Rotherham-Shrewsbury (FL1); Luton-Cambridge (FL2); Ross County v Celtic, unbeaten in 63 domestic games (SPL) and Atletico Madrid-Real Madrid & Barcelona-Leganes (Spain). The ATW Tennis finals continue in London; the RM Golf Classic is underway (1619 November) in America and Cheltenham’s November NH race meeting starts today.
