lencian painter Joaquín Sor Va lencian artist Joaquín Sorolla, Clotilde García del Castillo. With the country in the throes of the Industrial Revolu tion, Spanish women faced sig nificant challenges, one of the biggest of which is that they had no rights. They were con sidered secondclass citizens and had limited access to edu
cation, job opportunities and political representation. Rele gated to a subordinate role in society, they had limited au tonomy in their personal and professional lives. In this dismal context, Clotilde achieved success as a mother of his children, sup porting her husband as his so cial secretary and his emotion
al caregiver. She was his painter’s model, his business partner and his marketing manager. She was his driving force, the compass and the key to his social advancement and success.
