Confirmation coincided with celebrations marking the 110th anniversary of the Orihuela­born poet’s birth.

A Republican, he was jailed at the end of the Civil War and died of tu­ berculosis in prison at the age of 31 in March 1942.

The central govern­ ment’s Minister of Public Works, Jose Luis Abalos, announced that the proce­

dures for the name­ change were now under­ way.

Alicante and Spain need­ ed to pay tribute to Her­ nandez, Abalos added, and they could do so by print­ ing his name “on a never­ ending cloudless sky.”

Joaquin Hernan­ dez, Dolores mayor, pointed out that this was automatically eliminated during the first State of Alarm last March.

“We want to help local business sur­ vive restricted open­ ing hours and capaci­ ty limitation,” Hernandez said.

“The local govern­ ment is also studying new measures to strengthen and sup­ port the municipali­ ty’s business­own­ ers,” he added.

A 39-YEAR-OLD Spanish man with a police record for similar offences was arrested and charged with stealing items worth €2,000 from an Elche building site. On one occasion, while wearing a face mask, high-viz jacket and construction worker’s helmet, he took tools as unsuspecting workers were on their lunchbreak.

TORREVIEJA’S emblematic sail­ ing boat, the Pascual Flores replica, can finally go to sea.

Torrevieja Town Hall recently agreed that the Fundacion Nao Victoria can use the boat for four years.

The Andalucia­based founda­ tion is a non­profitmaking organ­ isation that specialises in historic vessels and the Samuel Flores will visit Europe’s principal mar­ itime fairs, putting into ports worldwide.

Dolon and the foundation’s di­ rector Jose Fernandez de Cabo signed a collaboration agree­ ment aboard the Andalucia, the organisation’s galleon that re­ cently visited the town.

The town hall will pay Funda­ cion Nao Victoria €150,000 for repairs which will be carried out locally over the next six months.

The Samuel Flores is actually a replica of a 25­metre sailing boat built in Torrevieja in 1918 and used for local coastal shipping.

Later it was sold to a Catalan

shipowner and spent many years in the UK before it was bought by Torrevieja Town Hall in 1999.

The Samuel Flores was in such bad condition that it ended its days in the breaker’s yard after costing the municipality approxi­ mately €500,000 between 1999 and 2004 in purchasing and maintaining it.

The €4 million replica, which was built in 2008, will finally earn its keep by publicising Torrevieja worldwide, Dolon said.

All charged up SAN FULGENCIO has a new charging station for electric cars.

Located in Calle Mar Tirreno, the station’s three chargers ­ two rapid and one semi­rapid ­ are available 24 hours a day and can charge four vehicles simultaneously.

The station is in included in the agreement between Iberdro­ la and San Fulgencio Town Hall to join forces in combatting cli­ mate change and encouraging sustainability.

Iberdrola is steadily advancing in its goal of installing sustain­ able infrastructure throughout Spain and Alicante in particular, the company said.

Help needed for Butterfly Children THE Debra Butterfly Chil­ dren’s Charity recently launched a campaign to raise the public’s aware­ ness of Epidermolysis bul­ losa (EB).

Entitled ‘The truth lies beneath,’ the campaign features a video showing one minute out of the three hours of daily treatment that a small girl must en­ dure every day of her life, explained Mary Chambers, manager of the Butterfly Children Charity Shop in Ur­ banisation La Marina.

This condition, where the lightest butterfly touch causes severe blistering and open wounds, currently af­ fects 500 people in Spain.

Debra Butterfly Chil­ dren’s Charity was founded in 1993 by the parents of a boy with EB and is the only organisation in Spain that

supports children and their families.

The organisation raises funds to promote aware­ ness, finance research and maintain a team of dedicat­ ed health care workers who help families.

Nurses, psychologists and social workers also help with specialist advice and information for nation­ al health service doctors and care workers.

The Covid­19 crisis has severely affected the chari­ ty’s ability to continue its essential work and it has seen an 80 per cent reduc­ tion in income.

RUSSIAN oligarch Vladimir Maru­ gov, nicknamed the Sausage King, has been murdered with a crossbow, according to an inves­ tigation.

Marugov was with his partner, who managed to escape through the window and alert police, in

an outdoor sauna at his country­ side estate when they were at­ tacked by two masked assailants, according to reports.

The body of the Russian Sausage King, who owned some of Russia’s largest meat­process­ ing plants, was found by detec­

tives next to the crossbow that killed him. The attack occurred early on Monday, November 2, at the estate located around 40km (25 miles) outside the capi­ tal, Moscow, leaving the owner of the Ozyorsky and Meat Empire sausage factories dead.

SANCTUARY: The Queen will spend second lockdown at Windsor Castle.

QUEEN ELIZABETH, 94, and the Duke of Edinburgh, 99, have re­ turned to Windsor Castle ahead of England’s second national lockdown.

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace confirmed the couple travelled from the Sandringham Estate to Berkshire together on Monday, November 2.

A month­long lockdown begins today, Thursday November 5.

Philip has been in sanctuary at his Wood Farm cottage on the Sandringham estate for the last few weeks while the Queen re­ turned to Windsor at the beginning of October.

The couple celebrate their 73rd wedding anniversary on No­ vember 20. Earlier this week, Prince William revealed his own coronavirus battle after months of secrecy.

Schools FRENCH pupils have now returned to school for the first time since a teacher’s beheading.

Over 12 million pupils re­ turned to school on Mon­ day, November 2, for the first time since Samuel Paty was beheaded by an Is­ lamist militant after he used cartoons mocking the Prophet Mohammad in a class on freedom of expres­ sion.

Schools are said to have held a minute’s silence in honour of Paty, who was murdered in a middle­class Paris suburb on the eve of a two­week holiday.

President Macron has described Paty as a “quiet hero.”

Neglect COLD-HEARTED Sharon Goldie, 45, accused her 13-year-old daughter Robyn of faking illness and went to the pub instead of looking after her, the High Court in Edinburgh heard.

Her daughter was dead in the living room of their Wishaw home from a perforated ulcer when Goldie returned later on the night of July 26, 2018.

Sentencing her to three and a half years in prison on Thursday, October 29, Lord Beckett said: “When your daughter became ill and was repeatedly trying to get to hospital you were substantially motivated by protecting yourself from closer scrutiny by the authorities which would have inevitably followed hospital admission.”

Goldie, of Lomond Drive, Wishaw, admitted wilfully ill treating and neglecting Robyn between July 12, 2017 and July 26, 2018.

BREAST cancer survivor Ey­ lon Nuphar celebrates scars topless on the cover of an Is­ raeli women’s magazine, one month after undergoing a double mastectomy.

The 49­year­old perform­ ing artist was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33 and went through chemotherapy, a lumpecto­ my, and radiation, but opted not to have surgery.

Sadly, the cancer returned 16 years later and Nuphar opted for a double mastec­

tomy, prompting her to pose for her cover shoot for Laisha Weekly in the hopes that showing herself in her natural form will inspire oth­ er women.

Nuphar, who carries the BReast CAncer (BRCA) gene which is associated with an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer, decided she would not endure further surgery when presented with the option of recon­ struction as she celebrates her scars topless.

SLEEPY burglar Mark Cooper was found asleep next to a half­eat­ en cheesecake, inside the Sunderland bar he was attempting to steal from, say Northumbria Police.

The 41­year­old, who was jailed at South Tyneside Magis­ trates' Court for 26 weeks after admitting burglary, was found by police inside the 808 Bar & Kitchen on St Thomas Street, Sunder­ land, on Saturday, October 24.

The burglar was also ordered to pay £30 compensation to the Sunderland bar after helping himself to alcohol, and the cheese­ cake!

An investigation has been launched into whether anyone else was involved in the ‘burglary’.

SWEEPING changes are being made to Comic Relief following backlashes in recent years to stars such as Stacey Dooley and Ed Sheeran highlighting themselves as ‘white saviours’ when visiting Africa.

The charity will now be looking to adopt a ‘more authentic perspective,’ and it is a move the Comic Relief co-founder Sir Lenny Henry welcomes.

In the announcement, made on Wednesday, October 28, the

charity said it was finalising new ‘story-telling guidelines,’ which would include a stronger focus on ‘grassroots’ workers in appeal films that explore issues including; mental health, climate change, and forced marriages.

Taiwan 200 No Refunds Grave Dispute

WHILE many countries around the world are facing increased restric­ tions and lockdown, Taiwan is giving hope as it has achieved 200 days without a locally transmitted Covid case.

Taiwan, an island of 23 million, reached this impressive new land­ mark on Thursday, October 29, with its last local coronavirus case recorded on April 12.

Experts say that Taiwan did several things right to avoid the delay of a second wave, including closing borders early and implementing compulsory mask­wearing from the outset.

The country has had 550 confirmed coronavirus cases in total throughout the pandemic and only seven deaths.

BRITAIN’S Ministry of Defence (MoD) are set to take back control of the atomic weapons contract from the Lockheed Martin­led group.

The defence ministry will re­ sume direct day­to­day opera­ tions of the country’s nuclear weapon warheads as they re­ gain control from a consor­ tium run by Lockheed Martin, Serco and Jacobs Engineering.

DOCTORS in Houston, Texas studied more than 5,000 coronavirus patients and found that 99.9 per cent of cases were caused by a new virus mutation, called D614G. This D614G strain of SARS­CoV­2 is the most common version worldwide, ac­ counting for 85 per cent of cases, and first appeared in Europe in February.

A GRAVE dispute in Hertfordshire led to the burial of a body being delayed, causing further grief to the mourning family.

The funeral of 98­year­old William Worby was delayed by two hours after a priest at Old Hall Green in Hertford­ shire decided to question the size of the grave.

His son Peter said that due to the added stress and sub­ sequent delay, the family was “robbed of grief.”

The issue had been raised prior to the service, which occurred on Wednesday, October 28, however, the family believed the situation had been resolved in advance.

Eventually, the service went ahead, despite further grave dispute discussions delaying the body burial.

Coronavirus mutation Scientists are still trying to determine why the D614G strain has become the prin­ ciple form of SARS­CoV­2, and think it may be due to the mutation increasing the

amount of virus in the upper respiratory tract. This makes it more likely to spread when the infected person talk, coughs or sneezes.

Portugal Plea TELEVISED ADDRESS: Another state of emergency is wanted.

PORTUGAL Prime Minister Anto­ nio Costa pleaded with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to de­ clare a Covid emergency after they recorded 4,656 new daily cases on Friday, October 30, the highest since the pandemic began.

The plea from the Portuguese PM for the state of emergency, as a preventive measure to fight the

spread of coronavirus, came ahead of a televised address from the president on the evening of Monday, November 2.

Portugal’s last Covid­19 state of emergency lasted six weeks when it was declared back in March.

The government announced new partial confinements on Saturday, October 31.

Kabul students shot AT least 10 students have been killed by gunmen in an attack on Kabul University’s campus before exchanging fire with security forces. According to a senior Afghan government source and wit­ nesses, gunmen attacked the campus where they targeted the stu­ dents, injuring around 22 people on Monday, November 2.

This latest attack comes after an airstrike on an Afghan school killed 11 children, despite government and Taliban negotiators meeting in Qatar to try to broker peace deals.

It is unknown whether any of the gunmen died during their ex­ change with security forces.

Whale That Was Lucky A PERFECTLY placed sculpture of a whale saved the life of a train driver in Spijkenisse, near the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands, after it crashed through a barrier at the end of the tracks on Sunday, November 1.

The lucky escape for the Metro driver hap­ pened shortly before midnight when instead of dropping 10m (32ft) into the water below, the con­ veniently placed artwork left the train suspended in mid­air, avoiding a hor­ ror crash.

The sculpture erected in the water, titled Whale Tails, is the work of the architect and artist Maarten Struijs, and has sat at the end of the De Akkers metro station since 2002.

Man mauled Primark Expect Losses

DW I G H T T U R N E R, 50, was mauled by a black leopard in a backyard ani­ mal enclosure in South Florida.

Baby Milk Supplement PHARMACISTS in Italy have reported a surge in a baby milk supplement being snapped up by people looking to protect themselves against Covid.

A video claiming that Lactoferrin, a product usually marketed as an immune system booster for babies, went viral and sparked people within Italy to flock to their nearest pharmacy in order to buy the ‘miracle’ product.

The demand for Lactoferrin, an important immune­ supporting glycoprotein that is found in breast milk, has meant a large pharmacy in central Rome is now shifting up to 100 boxes of the supplement each week compared with just two or three in a month in normal times.

PRIMARK has warned of a £375 million hit from the loss of sales due to lockdown closures.

Owners of the retail giants, Associated British Foods, estimated the significant loss due to the Covid restrictions as all Primark stores in Ireland, France, Belgium, Wales, Catalonia and Slovenia are temporarily closed.

These closures already represent 19 per cent of its total retail selling space, but more damagingly, it said if the UK government was to go through with plans to close non-essential shops in England for one month

Shocking Neglect

A MOTHER from Fuengirola has had custody of her child removed after the 18­day­old baby girl tested positive for cocaine. The baby is said to be suffering from neonatal ab­ stinence syndrome, a medical condition that occurs when a foetus has been exposed to drugs during pregnancy.

The mother was put under investigation for prenatal abuse on October 8 after doctors at the Costa del Sol hospi­ tal in Marbella diagnosed the new­born. Supported by the Local Police, the Child Protection Service of the Andalucian government removed the baby from the custody of her parents.

AN airport boss has blasted the UK gov­ ernment over its “shocking” neglect of the aviation and travel industry following lockdowns and restrictions.

Charlie Cornish, the chief executive of Britain’s biggest airport group, MAG, ac­ cused Boris Johnson of “effectively shut­ ting down his business.”

The MAG group, which includes Man­ chester and London Stansted airports, is planning to lay off 900 staff.

A BOAT carrying at least 12 migrants, landed on Sunday, November 1, at around 10am, on the beach of l’Ampolla de Teulada- Moraira.

Several locals who were sunbathing on the beach at the time described the newcomers as ‘very young’ and possibly of ‘Algerian nationality.’ The young men reportedly dashed from the boat with bags on their backs and fled on foot from the beach.

Farmer killed mum

JOHN BOUND, 59, shot his 80year-old mother, Gwendoline Christine Bound, before turning the gun on himself at their home in Abergwili, Wales.

An inquest heard that Mrs Bound died after being shot in the chest while her son died after suffering head injuries just eight days after the beginning of lockdown in March.

Mr Bound, a herd sheep farmer, had confided in friends that he was concerned about the lockdown, worrying that he would not be able to check on his animals. He is said to have told them that “he didn’t know how he would cope.”

Incy wincy spider A GREAT FOX spider feared extinct has been spotted for the first time in 20 years at the UK MoD training area in Surrey.

The spider, one of Britain’s most endangered species, had previously only ever been found at three locations, in Dorset and Surrey, and has not been since the early 90’s.

The discovery was made by spider enthusiast Mike Waite of Surrey Wildlife Trust, who said he was “over the moon” with the find.

Great Fox Spiders are ground-dwelling and largely nocturnal, but Mike said he had never given up hope that he might find the monster spider.

High and dry FIREFIGHTERS in Essex rescued three men believed to be in their late teens who became trapped inside an industrial tumble dryer in Essex.

Crew from Loughton and Harlow were called to a derelict laundry site in Bower Hill, Epping at 6.35pm on Friday, October 30.

According to Essex Fire and Rescue Service, two of the men had already climbed into the tumble dryer when a third man’s ankles became trapped in the door when he tried to crawl in.

Firefighters worked with Essex Police, Helicopter Medical Emergency Service (HEMS) and the Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to rescue the men.

Early Protection VACCINES for children could protect against Covid-19, claims a researcher.

Cross-immunity from the paediatric tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis vaccine could protect children against coronavirus, an investigation carried out by Pedro A Reche, from the Immunology Department of the Complutense University of Madrid has found. Covid-19 severely affects the elderly while children are largely protected, said the researcher.

“In this study, the possible cross-immunity induced by paediatric vaccines against SARSCoV-2 has been evaluated, concluding that the vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP) may be responsible for said protection,” said Reche.

BRITISH online supermarket and technology group, Ocado, has bought two robotic com­ panies after hiking its profit forecasts.

Burgos Riots A PROTEST turned nasty in Burgos as members of the public took to the streets to protest the continued restrictions on public freedom in Spain.

The Burgos area of Gamonal saw violence break out between protestors and police in the area on Friday, October 30, just as the evening’s curfew measures were coming into effect.

The initial protests saw over a thousand people take to the

streets to demonstrate the actions being taken by the government.

As the protesters started to dissipate, around 40 members were left on Victoria Street and started burning rubbish containers and causing significant damage to public property.

However, their efforts were not supported by the local residents with many applauding the efforts of Local Police in containing the violence.

Penguin Pay Day A FORMER birdkeeper in the UK has been jailed for 32 months after stealing penguins from a British zoo and selling them on Facebook.

On Friday, October 30, Bradley Tomes, 25, a former birdkeeper was sentenced for the theft of Humboldt penguins named, Pablo and Penny from Lakes Safari Zoo during his time working there as an aviarist.

It was discovered that Tomes broke into the zoo more than once to steal a range of rare and exotic animals including egrets, penguins and macaws.

He was finally detained after one of the buyers contacted a vet because the birds were in particularly poor health.

Stoner Rage A VIOLENT stoner in the UK has killed his cat after it found his weed stash and ate it.

Aaron Chapman, 29, from Bodmin, Cornwall, has been sentenced to jail for a total of four months after he was found guilty of stabbing his cat, Lord Biris, to death at a New Year’s party in 2018.

Chapman discovered that the feline had gotten into his private marihuana stash and ate it during the night’s festivities. He became so enraged that he threw the cat to the ground and stabbed it repeatedly in front of traumatised guests.

Magistrates said it was the ‘most horrendous, vicious assault on his own cat.’

140 Dead at sea AT least 140 migrants heading for Europe have drowned off the coast of Senegal after their boat caught fire and capsized, according to the UN migration agency on Thursday, October 29.

The horrific incident occurred after a boat carrying over 200 peo­ ple sank a few hours after leaving the fishing town of Mbour, 100 km (60 miles) south of the capital Dakar, on Saturday, October 24.

The boat heading for Europe, which is said to be one of the deadliest to be recorded this year, was engulfed by thick black smoke as people swam frantically towards a local rescue boat in or­ der to get away.

THOUSANDS of German police plan to hunt down lockdown rule­ breakers, according to Interior Minister Horst Seehofer.

In an announcement on Thursday, October 29, it was confirmed that since the stricter lock­ down measures were put in place, the German government were mak­ ing plans to deploy thou­ sands of its federal police officers across the coun­ try to enforce them.

Humiliated Barrister A BLACK barrister in Essex, who was mistaken for a defendant three times in one day, is set to meet the head of the Courts service.

‘Humiliated’ Alexandra Wilson was challenged by a security officer, a solicitor, and a clerk at a magistrates’ court in Sep­ tember after being mistaken for a defendant.

According to the BBC, the 25­year­old from Essex did re­ ceive an apology, however, in a meeting due next month she is hoping for ‘real change’.

“It was quite humiliating to be shouted at, and to try to re­ main calm and focus on what I was trying to do knowing also that I’m then about to present a case in that same court­ room,” Ms Wilson said.

Boeing Cuts JET airline maker Boeing plans to cut thousands of ex­ tra jobs after suffering more losses.

The coronavirus pandemic has been destroying the avi­ ation industry and looks set to do more damage to Boe­ ing after it posted its fourth quarterly loss in a row on Wednesday, October 28.

Now, Boeing plans to cut its workforce by around 30,000 people this year, which has risen significantly

Next Level UK high street and online retailer Next is outper­ forming its competitors after reporting better­ than­expected sales over the last three months amidst Covid chaos.

Supply constraints at its warehouses meant it could only focus on full­ price sales, meaning full­ price sales in the third quarter (to October 24) were 2.8 per cent higher than a year ago.

Next is set to see a full­year pre­tax profit of £365m, a total which is £65m higher than was forecast in September.

Shares in Next are also up 1.5 per cent.

Legend Lost COMEDY star Bobby Ball has died of coronavirus at the age of 76, his manager Phil Dale con­ firmed.

A statement read: “It is with great personal sadness that on behalf of Yvonne Ball, and the family, and Tommy Can­ non, I announce that Bobby Ball passed away at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on October 28, 2020 at approximately 9.30pm.”

Bobby had been tak­ en to the hospital for tests as he started with breathing problems. At first it was thought to be a chest infection but a test proved positive for Covid­19.

Corbyn Suspended JEREMY CORBYN has been suspended by the Labour party fol­ lowing his refusal to apologise over anti­Semitism allegations.

THE Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has rede­ fined Covid­19 ‘close contact’ guidelines after a prison guard was infected after only 17 min­ utes of contact with positive in­ mates.

On Wednesday, October 21, the CDC redefined the guidelines

for ‘close contact’ with someone who has tested positive for coro­ navirus as a 15­minute interval or several brief encounters that add up to 15 minutes within a 24­hour period.

The change was prompted when a 20­year­old prison guard contracted the virus from in­ mates who tested positive after spending only 17 minutes in to­ tal with them over a series of brief encounters.

Fists fly A WOMAN on a Ryanair Malaga to Manchester flight marched down the plane to a male passenger and shouted “I’m going to smash you up” before a full scale brawl broke out.

The Ryanair flight had taken off from Malaga and was only around 20 minutes from landing when the fight broke out. Police were seen on board the plane after it landed in Manchester and arrested one male pas­ senger on Monday, Octo­ ber 26.

A spokesman for Ryanair said: “The crew of this flight from Malaga to Manchester requested police assistance upon ar­ rival after several passen­ gers became disruptive shortly before arrival.

Sanofi is responsible for the Vaxigrip Tetra flu vaccine and the vaccine is applied in several autonomous communities in Spain, stressing there are “no safety problems.” While Sanofi didn’t specifiy in which commu­ nities it is being used, information in various media at the start of the flu campaign indicated the regions include the Valencian Community, the Canary Islands, Galicia and Andalucia.

Vaxigrip Tetra is one of two vaccines involved in controversy in South Korea, where its application was linked to the subsequent death of at least 59 people.

Why do some regions have different curfew times?

The national curfew is set at 11pm­6am where people can­ not leave their homes howev­ er the individual regions may amend the times of this cur­ few by one hour in either di­ rection.

Can I take my dog out to walk or go for a run?

Yes, however you must not be out on the streets within the curfew hours of 11pm­6am, or the altered hours according to your region.

Can I go to the bar with my friends?

Yes, however bars must be closed by 10.30pm to enable all public and staff to be home and off the streets by 11pm.

I want to return home for Christmas by car or ferry, can I still go?

At the moment the same rules apply as per the informa­ tion regarding travel. However, it is important to understand that the current restrictions can change locally and nationally at any time, therefore the infor­ mation available today will very likely be different by Christmas.

Does each region have the ability to change restrictions when it wants even though the State of Alarm runs until May? At this time, the regional governments can alter the re­ strictions within their bound­ aries any way they wish. They can also change the limitation of groups and people in public and private spaces. The only aspect, under the National State of Alarm that they cannot change, is the nationwide cur­ few.

However, it is important to stress that any and all local mea­ sures can change with minimum notice.

Furthermore, the National State of Alarm is being reviewed every 15 days even though it has been approved until May 9.

Therefore, decisions being taken at the national level can also change every two weeks.

The Bank of Spain has in the past stated that it is in favour of bank consolida­

tion (as with Bankia and Caixa Bank) as this will cre­ ate stronger operations, more able to cope with a possible recession especial­ ly if unguaranteed bad loans (including mortgages) grow and they cannot be sold on to third parties.

Currently the Spanish government benefits from the purchase by the Euro­ pean Central Bank of its low interest bonds, but at some stage repayment will most likely be required.

Spanish GDP rises

Passing on old butane bottles I have lived in Spain for 17 years using the normal butane gas bottles. Now we are changing to all electric. We are pensioners and soon will not be able to handle the heavy gas bottles. I have five gas bottles which I inherited when we bought our bungalow. They are empty and I want to get rid of them. My question is: Can I give them away to friends or do I have to return them to the original owners? I don’t know what the law is.

PIZZA EXPRESS has announced it is to slice a further 1,300 jobs as the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact on trade.

Last month, the chain revealed it was closing 73 restaurants, putting 1,100 jobs in jeopardy.

THE third quarter of 2020 has seen a remarkable turn­ around in terms of volume with GDP up by 16.7 per cent according to the National In­ stitute of Statistics (INE) meaning that Spanish Gross Domestic Product has fallen by 8.7 per cent as opposed to 21.5 per cent in the previous quarter.

There has been a significant increase in demand for goods both nationally and equally importantly internationally which has been one of the main reasons for the increase even though the number of hours worked during the quarter has fallen slightly.

Unemployment continues to rise from 15.3 per cent last quarter to 16.3 per cent this quarter, some 350,000 people

bringing the jobless total to 3.7 million and several hun­ dred thousand more are in ERTE (furlough) but receiving financial support from the government.

The Spanish government wants to stand by its socialist principles so that it can in­ crease financial support for the most poverty stricken, in­ crease pensions, introduce a basic income scheme and in­ ject greater funding for the health service, but this all comes at a cost.

As expected, there will be more taxes on the better off with the introduction of high­ er capital gains and business taxes and the government has the funding promised by the European Union to fall back on.

BRITISH banks are both heroes and possibly villains with re­ gards to the amount of money they have leant to businesses but also, they have reaped a pretty good reward from the UK government.

The PA news agency was told, following a freedom of in­ formation request, that the government has paid at least £65 million in interest to the banks by way of support to en­ courage that the loans are made.

A further freedom of infor­ mation request by the British Business Bank found that they were charged at 5.1 per cent, lower than commercial loans but still much higher than the Bank of England rate of 0.1 per cent.

Whilst the Spanish govern­ ment looks to increase ex­ ports, the Koreans in turn see Spain as a natural stepping stone to expand their trade across South America.

Pizza Express to slice 1,300 jobs coronavirus lockdown areas had caused a severe drop in people din­ ing out.

All of the 370 Pizza Express restaurants across the UK are ex­ pected to be affected by the job losses.

In a statement, company MD Zoe Bowley said the recent surge in coronavirus cases “is again causing footfall to decline across the UK.” “As this is expected to continue for some months, we sadly need to make changes that will impact more

of our team members,” she added.

Pizza Express was reported to be in difficulty last October after it ended the year with £1,1 billion (€1.234 billion) worth of debt fol­ lowing a pre­tax loss of £55 million (€60.5 million).

Currency outlook: US dollar rallies amid renewed coronavirus panic, Brexit drama rocks the pound

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.91 to £0.90 EUR/USD: Unchanged at $1.17 The euro has had a rough time through October as a second wave of coronavirus cases swept through Europe, prompting countries to impose increasingly strict re­ strictions.

These restrictions have already started to have a demonstrable impact on the Eurozone economy, with a contraction in this month’s PMI figures stoking fears the bloc faces a double­dip recession.

With France and Germany imposing new lockdown measures through Novem­ ber, and other Eurozone countries likely to follow their lead, the economic out­ look in the bloc is looking increasingly bleak, which may drive the euro lower in the weeks to come.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.09 to €1.10 GBP/USD: Up from $1.28 to $1.30 The pound has fluctuated over the past month, mostly as a result of heightened Brexit uncertainty as the UK and EU clashed over the terms of their future trade relationship.

While the back and forth over a deal created considerable volatility in GBP ex­ change rates, particularly with Boris Johnson declaring at one point that trade talks were ‘over’, a prevailing sense of cautious optimism ultimately saw Ster­ ling strengthen through October.

Going forward, this volatility in the pound is only likely to become more pro­

nounced, as the ongoing uncertainty sur­ rounding Brexit is set to be compounded by rising speculation that the UK will need to impose a second national lock­ down amidst an alarming surge in coron­ avirus.

However, there remains considerable upside potential in the pound if UK­EU talks move in the right direction.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.77 to £0.76 USD/EUR: Unchanged at €0.85 After rocketing higher in September, the US dollar has found itself giving some ground this month amidst shifting market sentiment and concerns over the US labour market.

This weakness was most prevalent through mid­October as markets were cheered by perhaps misguided optimism that a new US stimulus package would be agreed before the election.

However, the US dollar ended the month on a high after markets were gripped by fresh panic over the coron­ avirus pandemic, with investors flocking back to the safe­haven currency as the prospect of new lockdowns threaten to derail the recovery in the global econo­ my.

Looking ahead, we expect the ‘Green­ back’ to continue to benefit from safe­ haven flows in the coming weeks due to heightened coronavirus jitters, as well as lingering political uncertainty in the wake of the US presidential election.

Don’t hold yer breath!

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I HAVE always maintained that political correctness would be the death of the UK. Witnessing the facts emerging from this week’s inquest into the Manchester bombing it appears my predictions have tragically begun to materialise.

According to his testimony, the security guard responsible for allowing this despicable piece of pig swill to continue his mission of death admitted he hadn’t challenged him because he ‘didn’t want to appear racist!’ This was despite the monster transparently ticking every suspicious box on the list. The colossal back pack he was carrying should alone have aroused suspicion, even if it had been carried in by the Pope himself!

No, I’m afraid this witness’s admission simply shows us that all those who advocate political correctness and the suppression of free speech, basically have the blood of all those young people on their hands. To my mind they are all traitors and

are guilty of treason. If we had allowed thousands of young able bodied Germans, to enter and be succoured in the UK before the First World War, there wouldn’t have been a second!

If we had also decided to subsequently implement laws of Political Correctness and the suppression of free speech it would have been akin to handing the German interlopers weapons of mass destruction and the country would have been destroyed within weeks. Someone truly does have to get a grip.

Scotland Yard has admitted there are at least 5,000 Jihadists in Britain alone, with more than 30,000 operating in terrorist cells, and reinforcements are arriving every day! How much more will it take for our politicians to act ­ or even acknowledge the true menace of Islamist extremism?

In the last two weeks there have been three major terrorist attacks in France.

Three of the innocent victims were actually beheaded in public by individuals screaming Allahu Akbar. ‘Ah,’ bleat the so­ called moderates, ‘but the majority of Muslims are not like that.’ No and not all the Germans were Nazis. There are 25 million Muslims living in Europe (yep!), six

million in France alone. So where are all these ‘moderates’? How Former Politicians Hit Paydirt With Public Speaking THERESA MAY is not known in Westminster for her oratory. Yet the former PM earned £136,000 last month for a speech in Seoul on global responses to the pandemic.

It takes her total for after­dinner speeches this year to more than £1 million. Her lecture­circuit earning power appears to surpass that of that, err, great ‘orator’ Boris John­ son.

We shouldn’t blame politicians for cashing in on their celebrity while people still remember them. Very few of us would turn down such huge sums. What is surprising is that people are prepared to pay them for doing it. But deep­pocketed organi­ sations fall for the political celebrity bait easily.

Barack Obama, George Osborne and David Cameron can all now com­ mand six­figure sums. The brand val­ ue and cachet of the speaker is para­ mount. And the bragging rights about the big name they managed to bag to address them. It’s not about

the content or value of the speech delivered. It’s all about the brouhaha around its delivery.

And so the game goes on. Why shouldn’t the beneficiaries roll in the hay while their sun, that’s sup­ posed to have set on them, shines on?

Those who organise these confer­ ences and pay these fees don’t real­ ly expect to hear priceless gems of wisdom from the speakers. More likely a ‘big name’ helps to draw in the crowds and raise the profile. We shouldn’t really criticise retired politicians for cashing in like this.

But we should object to current politicians taking on multiple extra

‘jobs’ as advisers, consultants etc while they’re supposed to be doing a full­time job for their con­ stituents.

As mentioned here before, I was never a huge fan of Theresa May as PM, or as Home Secretary. However, everything is relative. If asked, who would you rather be in charge of managing the current pandemic, I’m sure most people would gladly choose May over Johnson...

So, all things considered, I don’t have a problem with this. She got the job, did the time and is entitled to capitalise on the experience.

Migrant family A TRAGIC migrant family who perished crossing the Channel to the UK ‘had no choice.’

Construction worker Rasoul Iran­Nejad, 35, his wife Shiva Mohammad Panahi, 35, along with Anita, nine, and Armin, six, perished after being trapped in the cabin of a crammed makeshift fishing boat when it capsized in rough conditions, with winds of up to 47mph and five­ foot waves.

A text message that appears to be from Mrs Panahi to a family member on Saturday, October 24 said the fami­ ly “had no choice” but to cross the Channel, as to go the safer route by lorry “we might need more money that we don’t have.”

Call the police!

CONSULAR MATTERS S U R E LY all of us at some point in our lives have needed to call the police to request their help, in Spain it’s easy to call the police, the difficulty is in calling the right police.

In Spain we have, depending on where you live, the National Police, the Guardia Civil, the regional police and the Local Police, which makes it really difficult to know where to go to request help you may need.

The National Police and the Guardia CIvil belong to what is called ‘State Security Forces and Bodies’ and their functions are to promote citizen security, preventing disorders

and crimes, as well as the prosecu­ tion of these.

The functions of both bodies are similar, although not always the same, the initial difference is where they carry out their work.

The National Police is part of the Ministry of the Interior and occupies an important part of the Spanish territory, with the exception of the Autonomous Communities that have an Autonomous Police, such as Cat­ alonia (called Mossos de Esquadra) or the Basque Country (Ertzaintza).

Those known as ‘Municipal’ are the Local Police and are part of each City Council.

However, not all municipalities have Local Police, as it is a decision made by each of the municipal gov­ ernments.

The Local Police carry out their

function exclusively in the locality to which they belong and therefore their functions are limited to that area.

They must work with the National Police and the Guardia Civil.

So depending on where you live and what matter it is, you should call 091 (National Police), 092 (Local Po­ lice) or Guardia Civil 062, although a good alternative is to call the emer­ gency number 112 if it is an impor­ tant matter and they will refer you to the proper police.

Another option is to download the application for mobile phones ‘Alert­ Cops’ which is also available in Eng­ lish, and puts you in contact with the appropriate police, and it is a useful tool for many cases in which you are a witness or victim of a possible crime.

I am sure if we were dogs with mange we would have been treated better.

We have just moved to Spain and admittedly we do not speak the language. However, in the UK if a non-native speaker presented themselves, they would be appointed a translator and treated respectfully.

We expected some difficulties but nothing like the blatant rudeness dished out.

Surely this cannot be acceptable.

Expats contribute extensively to the Spanish economy, but beyond that it is surely a basic human right to be treated with empathy and fairness... or am I expecting too much?

I wouldn’t dream of treating another human being with the indifference that we experienced, yet this appears to be the acceptable face of the Spanish health system.

Who, in power is going to be remembered as the person who stood up and enforced change? Someone has to.

In the 21st century, with all the challenges we face, we should be unified, not treating people like the enemy.

IT would appear that the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic is fully gripping nations across the globe.

Since the curve flattened at the end of the first wave there have been sharp rises in official figures and subsequent drops depending on the specific actions taken by governments across the globe.

Some have enforced strict measures that have curtailed public freedom and others have opted for a more ‘laissez faire’ approach.

Figures have been overestimated, and figures have been underestimated, with many unsure as to what to believe any more.

There is one side of the debate that thinks the whole situation is a global attempt to control the population and force them into submission with their opponents arguing that we are in the grasps of a deadly global pandemic that will see winter bring more deaths than the first wave with public health services unable to cope.

With UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, announcing a four-week lockdown in the UK and a range of European countries including Germany following a similar tactic, one of the questions on everyone’s lips is; Will it work?

Lockdown or no-lockdown, full lockdown or local lockdown, circuit breaker lockdown or extended lockdown, no one really seems to know.

To be honest, with so much conflicting information, it is really difficult to know what should be done for the best, so the real question is, “To lockdown, or not lockdown?”

Society generally treats human procreative rights as though we’ll somehow be innately inclined to sufficiently understand and appropriately nurture our children’s naturally developing minds and needs.

By not teaching basic child development science and rearing to high school students, is not society implying that anyone can feel comfortable enough in unconditionally bearing children with whatever minute amount of, if any at all, knowledge they happen to hold?

Many people, including child development academics, would say that we owe our future generations of children this much, especially considering the very troubled world into which they never asked to enter.

Open to Immigrants CANADIANS are increasingly ‘accepting and supportive’ of immigrants and refugees, a new study has found.

A record high two­thirds of Canadians now reject the idea that immigration levels are too high, with this view strengthening across the country, reveals the study by polling firm Environics Insti­ tute.

In fact, despite a global pandemic, the majority of Canadians also believe “Canada needs more immi­

grants to increase its popula­ tion.”

The Focus Canada 2020 study revealed that Canadi­ ans have become more open, not less so.

“Over the past year, the Canadian public has become more accepting and support­ ive of immigrants and refugees, continuing a trend dating back several years, but to levels not recorded in more than four decades of Focus Canada surveys,” the report claims.

Critical Stage

NEARLY 100,000 people are catching coronavirus every day as the pan­ demic reaches a “critical stage,” researchers warn.

A study carried out by Imperial College London estimates the num­ ber of infections is doubling every nine days, with researchers warning we are at a “critical stage.”

Authors say the pace of the epidemic is accelerating and something has to change.

Swab tests on more than 85,000 people across England have shown an increase in R and that coronavirus infections are growing nation­ wide.

An interim report led by Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI, which includes tests taken between October 16 and 25, shows that the prevalence of infection has more than doubled since the last round of testing, with 1.28 per cent infected.

Guy Fawkes & Chocolate Steven Saunders FMCGB The Little Geranium La Cala de Mijas www.thelittlegeranium.com THE story of Guy Fawkes is interesting. Guy Fawkes, was known as Guido Fawkes while fighting for the Spanish. He was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who was involved in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

He was born and educat­ ed in York, but his father died when Fawkes was about eight years old, after which his mother married a Catholic. Fawkes wanted everyone to be Catholic and fought for Catholic Spain wanting to restore a Catholic monarch to the British throne and planned to assassinate King James.

Fawkes was one of 13 conspirators and he was put in charge of looking af­ ter the gunpowder. But the authorities were made aware and during the early hours of November 5, 1605 they searched Westminster

Palace and found Fawkes guarding the explosives.

He was questioned, tor­ tured and he eventually confessed to planning to blow up the House of Lords. Immediately before his execution he fell from the scaffolding where he was to be hanged and broke his neck and died, thus avoiding being hung drawn and quartered!

In the UK we celebrate every Guy Fawkes Night on November 5 by burning ef­ figies of Fawkes on the bonfire as well as lighting gunpowder in the form of fireworks. I doubt if the Spanish will celebrate, af­ ter all it was them who wanted to blow us up!

But all of us expats and visitors/tourists over here could have a little party at home, since we have to be home by 11pm there is not much else to do!

But what will happen this year with Covid? I would suspect that there will be no bonfire parties in the UK. The whole world has

become home central and so if you are planning to have a little party, then I have created some ideas for you, so keep reading.

Why not put away the troubles of Covid for one night, eat, drink and be merry (not too merry or you will get arrested!) A crazy world we now live in but experts say, get used to it as it’s not going away!

When we were boys (I have two brothers) my mum always did something special on Guy Fawkes night. I remember she would make toffee apples and she usually did some­ thing with sausages like toad in the hole and some­ times she would make a chilli con carne.

My take on all this, years later, would be dishes like mini toffee apples made by cutting rounds out of apples coating them in caramel (made from sugar, water and golden syrup cooked to hard crack stage at 150ºC) served with home­made toasted marshmallow on lit­

tle skewers, toasted with a blow torch. They make ex­ cellent petit fours!

Mum was a fantastic pas­ try chef and sometimes we would have chocolate pots with Cointreau as well as toffee apples and ice cream. I remember our friends being concerned that we were having Coin­ treau as we were kids. “It’s only half a teaspoon on each,” she would say!

Her chocolate pots were delicious, memorable and pretty easy to make. I have changed the recipe a bit (she would turn in her grave) but only to stabilise it more and I make the marshmallow myself but it isn’t difficult.

So, get your apron on and follow this recipe for my Mother’s pot au choco­ late with toasted marsh­ mallow, delicious! Home­ made marshmallow is so much better than the bought ones, softer and tastier, but obviously buy­ ing them will be a lot easi­ er!

Home-made Marshmallows makes enough for 8/10 portions 450 g of caster sugar 1 tablespoon liquid glucose 200 ml water 2 egg whites 9 leaves of gelatine soaked until soft Cornflour & icing sugar for dusting Method Put the sugar, water and glucose in a pan and boil and cook until mix reaches 130ºC. Pour this syrup into a plastic jug and whisk up the egg whites until stiff.

Pour the syrup a little at a time onto the egg whites and whisk continuously until thick and glossy (about 5/7 minutes).

Now sprinkle a baking tray with the cornflour and icing sugar and pour the marshmallow mix onto the tray, with a palette knife make it smooth and even.

Leave to set on the side (not in a fridge) for two hours.

Pot au Chocolate The gelatine in this recipe is not essential but it helps stabilise the mixture so that it doesn’t be­ come too soft when left in the room. It is better to eat when it is not fridge cold and therefore, I add the gelatine. You can also use Aga Aga. Ingredients (Makes at least eight portions) 550g of good quality dark chocolate 6 egg yolks 160 g of icing sugar 500 ml of whipped cream to soft peaks 100 ml of warmed milk 4 gelatine leaves soaked in cold water to soften ½ wine glass of brandy A little Cointreau to finish Method Break the chocolate into even sized pieces and melt it in a glass bowl over a pan of boiling wa­ ter without the water touching the bowl. Stir until evenly melted.

Whisk the egg yolks and the sugar together for a few minutes.

Now fold the melted chocolate into the egg mixture and stir in well.

Gradually add the whipped cream folding it well into the chocolate mixture.

Squeeze out the water from the soft soaked gelatine and add it to the warm milk and whisk in to avoid lumps. Now pass the gelatine through a sieve into the chocolate mix and whisk continuously.

Finally add the brandy and whisk in and use a spoon to pour the chocolate mix into little ra­ makins or small dishes and set in the fridge for a minimum of two hours.

To finish, drizzle with a little Cointreau on each pot and then drop two or three marshmallows on each pot and blowtorch (or lightly grill) to melt them over the chocolate. Serve straight away as soon as you heat the marshmallow.

Today, with its kennels at Dolores which can home up to 70 dogs, it is still a multinational organisation and a registered charity within the Valencian Community.

Winter dog care THE cooler weather is arriving and pets can be vulner­ able over winter and need extra care to keep them healthy and happy.

Providing your dog with an adequate diet adapted to its breed, size, age and weight is important all year round and even more so in winter to ensure it receives the right vitamins and nutrients.

However, bear in mind that like humans, it’s proba­ bly less active in colder months so be careful not to overfeed.

Skin and coat care is also important to protect dogs from the cold and damp. Daily brushing is vital to avoid matted hair and a conditioner should be applied beforehand to create a protective layer on the coat.

One bath per month is enough and remember to dry your dog off carefully afterwards as damp dog hair can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

Unless your dog has extremely long hair, keep clip­ ping to a minimum. Leave most of the coat at its nat­ ural length, but clip the hair on its stomach and legs a little shorter to avoid it picking up damp and mud when outside.

Keep a pot of natural Vaseline to hand and apply it noses and pads when it’s cold. This will stop the sensi­ tive skin from drying out and cracking.

Finally, especially if your dog is small or has short hair, buy it a raincoat. It may look a little silly but will be much happier as it will stay drier and warmer on rainy walks. Do remember to dry off unprotected ar­ eas afterwards though.

Making Choices ROBERT SHALLIS ON a daily basis we make small choices and to varying degrees throughout life.

Our choices in life can define us, they can make or break us and even haunt us.

Best­selling author John C Maxwell, said ‘life is full of choices and every choice you make, makes you.’

We always make a point of reminding our 16­year­old son before he goes out with friends to make the right decision and wise choices.

Where we find ourselves in life can very much be down to the initial choices we have made and therefore, our results are often symptoms of those decisions.

So how do we know when to make the right choices when faced with making an im­ portant decision?

Firstly, it’s important to understand that perception can be very different from one person to another, therefore, it can seem that whatever choice you make could be the wrong one depending on whom you talk to.

However, if it feels right and feels good, it usually comes from a space that will benefit most for the greater good. Making a decision from your heart tends to come from your true self which can be a good indicator.

Decisions are also made from the head as well as the heart, understandably so, it can be easy to become confused as each can contradict the other and lead to procrastina­ tion.

But whatever choice you make depending on its relevance can sometimes be frighten­ ing, which is why many of us just cannot commit to making a decision at all. Too many of us play it safe and therefore deny our­ selves the opportunity to grow, develop, benefit and expand in life.

Years later we can have regrets and can find ourselves saying, ‘if only I’d decided to do this or that all those years ago, look where we’d be now.’ However, faced with the op­ portunity to have the same choices again, you’d be surprised how many people would repeat the same pattern over again. People are so concerned about making the wrong choices they simply make none. So, make a choice, make it from the heart and take a leap of faith. If it’s the wrong choice, at the very least, you’ll find out quicker.

I see making a choice as a fork in the road analogy, asking myself, which one I should take and often naturally think that if I take the wrong one, it’s a bad choice. Again, I go with my heart and choose what feels right however, I accept that circumstances can change and what may have felt the right thing to do at the time can sometimes turn out with hindsight to be the wrong decision.

It’s ok to make mistakes, we’re human af­ ter all. Wrong decisions are a part of life al­ though, understanding why we’ve made them helps us grow. It is an opportunity to learn, accept the consequences and not to dwell on the choice you’ve made, simply move on knowing you are a little wiser than you were before.

Remember, the quicker you learn what is wrong, the quicker you can unravel what is right.

So start to make those all­important choic­ es today and understand that the right choice is not always the easiest, but making a decision one way or another can lead to some wonderful opportunities.

Mistakes can be rectified and forgotten but regret can last a lifetime.

Officer Injured A POLICE officer was airlifted to hospital on Saturday, October 31, after being hit by a car in Grays, Essex.

According to Essex police, the officer was injured after being hit by a vehicle in Stanford Road in Grays at about 8am, leading to a 45-year-old woman being charged for the offence.

The woman, who has not been named, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident.

She has also been charged with driving without insurance and driving otherwise in accordance with a licence and was due to appear at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, November 2.

Admittedly you would get used to the system once you have driven the car for a while, but it’s another example of manu­ facturers moving to systems that don’t appear to have uni­ versal approval. It also makes for multiple outstretched finger movements where a button re­ quired just one.

Digital disapprobation apart, the Leon is a real good news story for SEAT, it’s evolved into a very smart and stylish ma­ chine that drives and handles beautifully.

FLYING CAR: The AirCar is unveiled.

A SPORTS car that can trans­ form itself into an airplane in three minutes flew 1,500 feet in the air over Slovakia as part of a test flight on Thursday, October 29, and the video of it is making the rounds of the internet.

The vehicle, named the AirCar, is the latest genera­ tion of a flying car that has been developed by Slovakian firm KleinVision.

The two­seat model weights 2,425lb and can car­ ry an additional load of 440lb per flight, the company said.

Powered by a BMW 1.6l engine, the car­plane has an effective power output of 140HP and the estimated travel range of AirCar is 621 miles.

According to the develop­ ers, the car is suitable for self­driven journeys or as a

commercial taxi service.

“The fifth generation flying car designed by Professor Stefan Klein com­ pleted two 1,500 AGL flights at Piestany airport in Slovakia this week. The model safely achieved two full airport patterns, includ­ ing two takeoffs and land­ ings,” an official release said.

No price details have been revealed for the vehicle yet.
