Marbella Moments by Nicole King WHEN I think of LA the last thing that comes to my mind is the smog. However, when interviewing Hollywood movie director Damian Chapa this was certainly on top of his list for loving the Costa del Sol. He considers Marbella as ‘probably the most beautiful city in Europe’ and has a particular fondness for Estepona, which is where he’s currently directing his latest movie ‘Pistolera.’ The cast of this new film is impressive: Romina Di Lella is the star (Enemy Within, Love Hate & Security) with Robert Davi (James Bond Licence To Kill & Die Hard), Danny Trejo (Machete, From Dusk Till Dawn, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico) take other leading roles. Damian is also in the film himself. It must be challenging but fun for him to direct people of this calibre and get to ‘play’ alongside them too! However he’s no newcomer to working with top-notch Hollywood stars. When he started as an actor his first break came as a stand-in for Madon-

na’s ‘Papa don’t preach’ music video. He had his first leading role in ‘Blood in blood out’ alongside the likes of Benjamin Bratt and Billy Bob Thornton. His next part was in Street Fighter with Van Damme, Raul Julia and Kylie Minogue and Under Siege with Steven Seagall followed that. However by talking to him you’d never know he’s so famous or from Hollywood since he comes across as really ‘normal.’ He said he’d always had a love for make believe; remembering how he would dress up as different characters as a child and entertain his sisters. Acting just came naturally to him. I could sense a strong character behind the easy smile and wondered how he’d liked taking orders from other directors in the past. He said that as a professional actor he’d always listened to his directors, whom he admired, but he’d always envisioned how he’d have done it differently. He took every opportunity to learn as much about the industry as possible, including lighting and editing, which all led by natural progression to him becoming the movie di-

rector he is today. Although Romina Di Leila is the action-packed Latin style ‘Lara Croft’ heroine of Pistolera she is also the Executive Producer. She and Damian have worked on several films together and they both have high hopes that this new action packed movie will appeal to old and new fans in the US and Europe alike. I had to ask Damian how he was finding the Spanish pace, being that he’s from the USA where everything needs to be done yesterday and in Andalucia, well, it’s not. Apparently I hit the nail on the head, as it’s the only thing he’s had a problem adapting to. Damian already has another ambitious project in mind; bringing Hollywood to the Costa del Sol. I’m sure this would be much appreciated by everyone, particularly all our businesses and local budding actors so hopefully he’ll get all the support from us he needs and great success for this new movie in the making. See you soon - hugs and happiness @marbellanow rtvmarbellanow.com
