By Adele Land A long-awaited remodelling project is to give Mojacar’s Plaza Nueva a much-needed shot in the arm, as the oftphotog r a p h e d sq u a r e is prepped and primed for a substantial overhaul. The approved documents for the work have now officially b e e n p r e se n t e d to Mojacar mayor Rosa Maria Cano on behalf of the president of the Almeria Provincial Council, Gabriel Amat. The square is noted for its vistas which allow locals and tourists alike to feast their eyes on a stunning Andalucian panorama that includes everything from the homespun charm of nearby Garrucha to the rolling plains of Turre and the crashing waves of the

Almerian coastline. Plaza Nueva is already a well-known tourist attractio n w h ich lu res in th ousands of visitors each year, as well as the site of some of Mojacar ’s most vibrant fiestas. Co u n cil me mb ers a re hoping the extensive remodelling work will further strengthen the square’s reputation as a reference point and popular meeting spot within the community. The viewpoint rests atop a building which until now

ha s hous e d a hos pita lity school, the post office, the municipal library and the Local Police headquarters. B oth the lookout a nd the building, which date back to the 1970s, are seen by many as long overdue for a facelift. A s a n a dde d bonus , the work is expected to create 55 jobs over the course of the project which is expecte d to kic k off in O c tobe r a nd w ra p up in M a rc h of next year, just in time for the busy Easter holidays.

For maximum effect, a special kind of white granite will be used which will c omple me nt the e xis ting white buildings for which Mojacar is famed. Additionally, new lighting will be installed. The second phase of the work will include the installation of stairs, ramps, and a lift, w hile the e xis ting building unde rne a th the lookout w ill be c ome the ne w s ite of the tow n ha ll and the new Local Police station.
