Flying start to Keira campaign for funds THE campaign to raise €15,000 to send little Keira Alvarez Turner to the US for desperately-needed treatment has got off to a flying start thanks to the kindhearted Costa community.

A new roof for Calvario chapel THE Calvario chapel in Javea is to be reroofed.

This should solve the problems caused by damp which were first discovered a year ago, said the Heritage councillor Antonio Miragall.

Leaks were patched up and the chapel frontage plastered and repainted but

the town hall has decided to replace the pitched roofs over the nave of the church and side chapels.

The Calvario chapel was built on the site of an 18th century chapel that was demolished to make way for the present building inaugurated in 1856.

On professional advice, the town hall has set aside €110,000 to carry out “a radical rehabilitation,” according to Miragall.

As a Listed property, it will be necessary to engage an architect who specialises in restoration, but plans are still to be drawn up.

Gandia squatters moved GANDIA police have cleared 250 houses and apartments of squatters since 2011.

Most were bank repossessions but others belonged to owners living away from Gandia who returned to find they were occupied.

Forty squatters have been arrested during this period, said Tomas Reyes, the commanding

officer in charge on the ongoing operation. Only four minors were involved and in each case the local Social Services and Education departments were brought in to determine whether the children were at risk.

Local Police officers always don masks and gloves before entering an occupied building, many of which are used for drug peddling.

They expect to find a great deal of grime and often filth, as few of the properties have electricity or running water. As well as the ever-present drugs they also found fight dogs and fighting cocks in eight homes and on one occasion, racing pigeons.

“We can’t drop our guard. We never know what we are going to find,” Reyes said.

WO very determined Spanish videogame players have made it into the Guinness World Records 2015 Gamer’s Edition - known to fans as the ‘gaming bible.’

Released this month, the book recognises the world’s most staggering records from the hugely popular world of video gaming, such as ‘Fastest Car in a Videogame,’ ‘Most Game of the Year Awards’ and ‘Most Costly Pac-Man Game.’

the Olagirls Lesbian Mediterranean Gateway aimed at gay women of 35 and over.

The organisers will be

offering ‘leisure, parties, concerts, beach activities, fun games, surprises, great tapas, wine and more’ from June 5 to June 7 next year.

They deliberately booked the first weekend in June before the summer tourist rush began and choosing Calpe was not accidental, Olagirls said.

Spanish society is one of the most accepting of homosexuality and Calpe has all the necessary ingredients to make it the lesbian capital of Europe.

“We are tolerant by nature in Calpe,” agreed the resort’s Tourism councillor Jan van Parijs, who also welcomed the event as an opportunity to extend the tourist season.

Tradition or torture? – Bull festival shocks world

F

RIGHTENING images of one of Spain’s lesser known festivals made the pages of several European newspapers this week, showing a terrified young bull charging around a makeshift bullring with burning stakes strapped to his horns. Caked in mud, the pictures of the bull in the dark night illuminated only by the burning balls of tar attached to his head could have come straight from some hellish vision of the Apocalypse.

Clashes between animal rights activists and police brought the Joy of the Bull festival - in Spain’s Soria region - to the attention of the world, with widespread condemnation from most quarters. The annual festival has been deemed a “cultural highlight” in the village of Medinaceli, but has also been called a “sadistic festival” by animal rights group PETA. There has long been debate about

Spain’s treatment of bulls, particularly due to the popularity of bullfighting in the country. Whatever your thoughts on this famous Spanish tradition, most people would share the opinion that the Joy of the Bull festival is no doubt cruel. The bull is taunted and jeered as flaming hot tar burns precariously close to its head. Once the bull is exhausted, he is removed from the ring to be slaughtered and eaten by festival participants.

The debate about bullfighting in Spain will be waged for some time to come, but we think most people with a modicum of common sense would agree that events like the Joy of the Bull festival are in no way fair to the animal. Just because it’s an ancient tradition doesn’t make it okay to torture and frighten a creature in such a manner. Like the majority of outside observers, we think it should be stopped.

The couple, who now have two children aged 17 and 19, belonged to the terrorist group’s Ekaitz Commando, once responsible for 18 killings in the same year.

Narvaez and Alberdi stole a car, changed its number plates and packed it with with explosives before parking it in front of the university building on the morning of January 15, 1992. When the professor came out, they approached from behind, shooting him in the back of the neck and killing him instantly.

The car was discovered later that morning, injuring one of the police bomb disposal unit while it was deactivated.

ETA claimed responsibility for the killing, but Narvaez and Alberdi disappeared without trace.

Topics discussed at the meeting included the importance of registering as a resident on the town’s municipal ‘padron,’ as well as requirements for voting in next year’s municipal elections.

Foreign residents from EU member states can request inclusion on the electoral roll until

December 30, explained Maria Amparo Catalan, who is in charge of Denia’s padron and census list.

They should present a formal declaration of their intention to vote either by post, online or in person at their local town hall, Catalan added.

Residents from countries outside the EU which have a reciprocal agreement on voting in municipal elections can apply between December 1 and January 15, 2015.

They should be over 18, registered on the padron, authorised to reside in Spain and have lived in the country for at least five years prior to making the request.

Getting Villena’s measure CIRCULAR marks on the outer walls of Villena’s Santiago church were recently clarified by Villena archaeologist Laura Hernandez.

The Villena graffiti set out a local version of a 16th century unit of land measurement called “una tahulla,” said Hernandez during a conference on historic rock art in Castellon.

Although the metric system was adopted in 1843, the old measurement was still common in legal documents during the early 20th century, she said.

The term was also used in Murcia and Andalucia, although the exact measurements varied from town to town.

Calpe will find funds for fronts CALPE Town Hall is drawing up plans to renovate the facades of local buildings.

Neighbour makes displeasure felt A DENIA resident is using psychological warfare against a restaurant whose patio backs on to his house.

The restaurant’s owner Juan Carlos Villa does not want to engage in a feud between neighbours, he said. “I don’t want to enter into it but decency should prevail,” he told local press.

Join us in purple against violence TUESDAY November 25

is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a cause we at EWN feel strongly about and are sure our readers do too. We here at EWN are marking the occasion by printing the movement’s logo on the front cover of each of our six editions this week.

According to Spain’s Ministry of Health, Social Security and Equality, so far this year 43 women have lost their lives at the hands of their partner or ex-partner.

Only 13 had previously reported being victims of abuse.

The aim of the international campaign is to raise awareness of the fact that women around the world are subject to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence on a daily basis, in fact it has been estimated that one in three women will suffer some form of violence or physical or psychological abuse during their lives.

Recognised officially by the United Nations in 1999, November 25 was previously adopted to mark the assassination of three political activist sisters in the Dominican

Republic in 1960.

While nobody really knows exactly why the colour was adopted to symbolise the day, purple ribbons and handprints have become the most widespread way to show support for the cause, which most towns in Spain acknowledge in some way.

Therefore the EWN team will be going purple on Tuesday and invite readers to do the same in a stand against all forms of violence against women. Purple to tell abusers we will not look the other way while they get away with it. Purple to let victims know they are never alone.

EMMA TYTHERLEIGH is an equestrian, an acrobat, a performer and choreographer, and when they all combine, it makes an impressive show.

As an equestrian artist, Emma has travelled the world with her beloved, four-legged companions doing a range of stunt rides and tricks on horses.

Now, settled on the Costa Blanca, she is bringing her shows to a more local audience, accompanied by the talents of Juan Cortes to produce Spanish and Flamenco-themed shows

and solo acts.

British-born Emma has been riding for over 20 years since she was eight.

“I was bred in to it,” she jokes, as her dad was a professional horseman and her parents went on to build up one of the UK’s largest residential riding schools. “I knew nothing else and always wanted to work with horses.”

After finishing her GCSEs at 16 she went to watch a demonstration on how to train horses for films in Norfolk: “I was fascinated by it. There was a guy standing on two horses and

I was totally taken by it and offered a once-in-alifetime job with Cavalia, I asked them for lessons.”

They have just performed two shows at the stables, raising money for charity, but Emma is determined to make the shows bigger and better next year and at the end of the month is taking part in a three-day event in Madrid: “I have no dreams of becoming the best trainer in the world but I would love to be recognised across Europe as an equestrian artist and I’d like to create my own small, upmarket circus like Giffords.

But ultimately, I want to carry on working with horses and have a happy life with them.”

Villajoyosa resident on Queen’s honours list A BRITISH volunteer and patron of the Vilamuseu (museums and monuments) in Villajoyosa has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM).

Elaine Evans, who resides in Brighton and Villajoyosa, was on the Queen’s birthday honours list for her services to the arts in East Sussex and as an Honorary Patron of the Foundation of the Royal Pavilion and Brighton Museum.

Elaine was awarded her medal in the Red Room of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton by Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Lord Peter Field, on behalf of the Queen. She said: “It’s like a fairy tale, I feel very proud.”

In the last 10 years she has also written numerous articles on local history and archaeology and interviewed historians, academics and architects to meet and share their stories and experiences.

The Lord Lieutenant said: “Her story is an example to us all what it means to volunteer and is worthy of the Medal of the British Empire.”

Elaine and her husband Steve, who died eight years ago, bought an apartment in Villajoyosa in 1979. Her relationship with

Vilamuseu began in 2012 when, on behalf of her late husband, she financed the restoration of three large panels of Roman wall paintings from the Roman villa Barberes Sur which has since been known as Evans Paints I, II and III.

One of the panels is now exhibited in the permanent exhibition of Vilamuseu at the Museum of the University of Alicante. Elaine is aware of the importance of cultural tourism and volunteers by controlling the the translations into English.

Valley Voices choir mark anniversary VALLEY VOICES recently took some time off from their busy rehearsal schedule and celebrated their third anniversary with an Indian meal.

The choir is busy rehearsing for their Christmas performances, including their appearance at Jalon Church on December 18 at 9pm.

Unfortunately Cadenza will be unable to join Valley Voices on this occasion, as had previously been stated, due to family illness.

But stepping firmly into the breach is talented guitarist John Anthony who, together with the Costa Blanca Chorus, will make for a varied and entertaining evening. The

Roundabout celebrates 30 years of good work THE Roundabout Charity Shop in Javea celebrates their 30th anniversary on November 26. To mark the occasion a celebration is being held from 11.30am in the shop in Javea centre, with drinks and refreshments provided.

The open day also marks the forthcoming end of another successful year for the charity which has spent 2014 supporting several good causes such as Amigos de Europa, The Red Cross of Javea, The Harvest Store and The Children of

Emaus. The charity said: “To achieve all this, your support is invaluable, without it we would be unable to help these organisations. A massive thank you is merited for all your efforts. Please continue to donate, sell or buy.”

More volunteers are needed and those able to donate a few hours of their time each week should pop into the shop.

The store is open Monday to Saturday from 10am-1.30pm and will be closed December 24-26 and January 1.

A play within a play THE Drama Group of Moraira-Teulada’s U3A presents ‘Noel and Gertrude,’ a play about playwright Noel Coward. It focuses on his relationship with Gertrude Lawrence and will feature excerpts from his plays, films and music.

There are two performances at the Salon de Actos, La Senieta in Moraira on November 25, at midday and 6.30pm.

Entrance is free and is open to both members and nonmembers of U3A but arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Sierra Nevada is top of the world SIERRA NEVADA is officially one of the best preserved protected areas in the world. It has become the first natural space in Spain to make it onto the UICN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Green List.

The announcement was made during the World Parks Congress held in Sydney, Australia. The Sierra Nevada, which stretches between Almeria and Granada, houses two national parks and is subject to protection as a green area.

It is included in the initial list along with 23 natural parks in Spain, Australia, China, Colombia, France, Italy, Kenya and South Korea. The Green List includes natural areas considered essential for the survival of the planet, which scientists say is threatened by global warming.

Cataluña verdict from Fitch quick to arrive THE Fitch ratings agency’s reaction to Cataluña’s recent consultative vote on independence was quick to arrive.

Bigger cushions for biggest banks THE world’s 30 largest banks will be told to provide themselves with big loss-absorbing liability cushions.

These banks, which include Spain’s Santander and BBVA are categorised as systemic because their failure would have a ‘cascade effect’ similar to the collapse of Lehman Brothers which triggered the 2008 economic crisis.

To avoid a repetition, these banks must be able to withstand losses of between 16 to 20 per cent of risk-weighted assets in equity and cancellable debt, recommended the Basle-based Financial Stability Board (FSB).

This will protect taxpayers from having to fund bailouts for ‘too big to fail’ banks, the FSB said in plans drawn up for G-20 countries.

never to be forgotten gesture. This lesson in business was not given by a successful entrepreneur or at a business seminar but by an elderly lady running a corner shop.

You can put customer goodwill to

better use provided your approach is diplomatic and never pushy. An enterprising business friend in the home improvement trade constantly received expressions of thanks.

Explaining that he was trying to build his business, he suggested to clients that a short note of recommendation would be truly well received. Most were delighted at the opportunity to express their thanks in a tangible way.

On receiving the written tributes my friend placed each in his presenter. Then, when pitching to new customers he left his testimonials presenter with them before going on his way. The outcome

was that, whilst he was at home reading bedtime stories to his children, his past clients were doing his selling for him.

I adopted a more sophisticated approach. Following an order taken I posted to my client a small note of thanks and a five customer satisfaction survey.

Important: I included a stamped address reply envelope.

As a consequence I was soon to receive an unimpressive number of customer recommendations. These I placed in an envelope when confirming appointments by post. My sales success was assured, thanks to conscripting my customers to do my selling for me.

CHANGING a habit takes some getting used to. However, if your way of living is causing serious damage to your finances, then it’s time to take a step back and review how you might save a little.

A recent survey in the UK just revealed that most full-time British workers have an extra £500 to spend after paying all their bills and debts each month. This seems a little excessive to me, but wouldn’t a bit more spare cash each month be an incredible thing?

By taking a couple of frugal money-saving steps in your

day-to-day life there is a way to cut down on needless expenses and make your money go further - on things you actually want to spend it on.

Meal Plan. Draw up a weekly menu to help cut back on the huge amount of waste that many households create.

This system helps to identify areas where you can use up leftovers, finish half-eaten sauces, use fruit and vegetables before they turn bad and avoid grabbing expensive ready meals. And remember to never go shopping when you are hungry.

DIY Cleaning. Shops are lined with rows of expensive cleaning products, but a quick look in your kitchen cupboards and chances are you already have all the cleaning products you need right there.

A teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda on a damp cloth works just as well as expensive

KEEPING FIT: Incorporate exercise into your daily routine.

Try to walk more and take the stairs instead of lifts. For the sportier among us, parks or beaches are perfect for exercising, while public benches are ideal for pressups and other strength building exercises.

Not wild about campers WE residents of El Pinet are fed up with ‘wild camping’ in the car park, sometimes for months on end.

We have paid a lot of money to live here, not to overlook a gypsy encampment because that is what it is. We have sent petitions in the past to Elche Council and complained but they are not interested. If the mayor of Elche or any of her cronies lived here this would not be allowed to happen.

Has anybody in the Environment department thought of where they empty their sewage?

Well, we can tell them. They empty it here in green areas or even down the drains at our lovely walkway. We have seen them and photographed them and sent the photographs to Elche Council but, again, they are not interested. Surely this is a health hazard?

If Santa Pola and San Fulgencio can get rid of them, why can’t Elche? There are lovely campsites nearby, why don’t they go there? No, they are too tight to pay.

Get it in writing JUST a short letter to advise your readers if they are moving items to the UK from Spain they should get each quote in writing. This is my second letter but it is of public interest, so please print it.

Recently I used the services of a removal company, received a quote for €150 and then the company increased the quote to €250. When queried they made all sorts of excuses, none of which were valid.

Fuel fury ON a recent round-trip to the UK my wife and I chose to drive back through France, as we have done many times before.

On our return journey, having filled up with fuel several times each way, we were told at our last stop in Spain that our debit card was being refused, which rang alarm bells.

Having arrived home we immediately checked our bank account to discover there was little left because three transactions totalling approximately €160 had not been processed.

Instead random amounts totalling €310 were taken.

Two sums of €90 have since been repaid and the correct amount charged and eventually the last ‘theft’ of €130 was refunded.

However, they took the correct amount after four days but did not refund the €130 for 10 days, which is an even worse crime in my opinion.

The companies concerned are Super U and E L’Eclerc, supermarket chains with unmanned petrol stations where you can only use a credit or debit card to pay for your fuel.

The receipts are printed at the pump and they were all for the correct amount for the fuel that we purchased.

I have got nowhere trying to report this to my bank, VISA and even consumer groups.

Why is that, I wonder, because it is clearly theft?

Home alone THE mother who received a police caution for leaving her sixyear-old daughter alone for threequarters of an hour some years back has all my sympathy. She now has a criminal record that she wants erased and you’d have to belong to the pursed-lips brigade not to empathise.

My daughter is grown-up now but my blood still runs cold when I think of what almost happened when she was two. We had moved to a sixth floor flat on the seafront and the balcony had a sturdy wall topped with a railing.

Nobody leaves a two-year-old to her own devices and I certainly

didn’t but one day I was in the kitchen, getting the tea ready while my daughter napped.

Hearing a noise I popped my head round the kitchen door and to my horror saw her standing on top of the balcony wall. The sitting room door to the terrace was open and she had pushed a wicker chair against the wall and clambered up. The little so-and-so had her arms stretched wide, crowing with delight at the view and to this day I don’t remember reaching and grabbing her. And to this day the palms of my hands still sweat when I think about what could have happened.

It’s not just physical presence that counts: that UK mother’s 45 minutes of absence were probably less blameworthy and dangerous than my carelessness.

Starting early SOMEONE interviewed for ‘Street Talk’ said he regarded drinking Anis at 7am as expenditure on something that isn’t needed.

I’m assuming he is referring to the custom as still practised by Spanish workmen and navvies.

Anis isn’t what you’d describe as a huge outlay and this is a timehonoured habit, meant to kickstart the working day.

If memory serves me rightly, opening hours for the pubs round Covent Garden in London used not to correspond to the strict licensing regulations then in force.

I can’t see the Covent Garden porters who had been working until the crack of dawn drinking glasses of Anis, but they were obviously knocking something back when they didn’t need to.

Still on the subject of ‘Street Talk’ I was amazed that two women admitted to spending on shoes when they didn’t need to. I commented on this to my wife, who looked flabbergasted. “You don’t have to need shoes,” she informed me. “You just have to want them,” she explained patiently.

“Even if they’re never worn?” I asked. “Even if they are never worn,” she answered in a firm tone of voice that brooked no argument. Who was I to argue?

Hot stuff A CORRESPONDENT who was a lifelong socialist wrote last week that she felt betrayed by New Labour and was willing to give the UKIP party a chance.

Another letter described Farage’s party as ‘upstart and ultra-rightwing’ and warned against the effects on expats of an ‘in-out’ referendum regarding Britain’s EU membership.

Personally I believe that any expat giving UKIP a chance would be cooking their own goose.

Life is no holiday at London’s alcohol and bacon-free hotel LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

I

F you thought the UK was cold, you should try Denmark! My God, all the reasons I moved to warmer climes keep flooding back. Well, at least the Danish people seem warm enough.

Mind you it really is a strange language - lots of ‘erks’ and ‘choovs.’ Why is it that the first words I always learn in a new language are swear words?

Anyway, tomorrow I’m off to Sweden for the day - even colder! Apparently it’s 20 minutes by ferry. Ah well, someone has to do it.

Did you catch the report of the

RELIGIOUS STAY: Would all hotels welcome gay couples? new Sharia hotel that opened in London last week? No alcohol, no pork, and subsequently, a serious drop in clientele. To my mind the whole exercise is a gross error of judgement.

Notwithstanding the local Muslim populace, many of whom are, I’m sure, devout and

sincere in their beliefs, in my personal experience, the tourists from many of these strictly religious parts of the world travel to cities like London simply to get a break from their suffocating restrictions back home - the casinos are full of them.

I would also be interested to observe the result should a gay couple endeavour to check into the hotel and request a single room for the night. If this should happen, would there be the same outcry from the law as there was when that poor Christian family were mathered from pillar to post and subsequently arrested?

Wouldn’t ya just love to give it a try? Come on any samegender newlyweds out there; try and check into the honeymoon suite. And just for a bit of icing, carry a couple of bacon butties and a bottle of bubbly in yer bag. Anyone up for it?

It also interested me to read the new proprietor’s statement that it was an offence under Islamic law to ‘make a profit from alcohol.’ Does that mean

its ok to give it away? Sounds like a wriggle up to me. I was given gallons in Saudi Arabia.

Does that imply I wasn’t breaking the law at all? I dunno, they take the fun out of everything.

I also have a word of advice to the Muslims who objected to hamburgers being sold in their local supermarket. Don’t buy ‘em. Not rocket science is it? I dunno, sometimes I really do despair of it all.

AVE you seen the Christmas TV adverts by Tesco, M&S and John Lewis - the annual battle to win the hearts and wallets of Christmas shoppers by UK companies spending over £1.5bn on advertising campaigns?

Of the three, John Lewis’s about the little boy buying his penguin a wrapped-up penguin girlfriend stands head and, err, wings over the M&S fairies ad. And Tesco’s?

Just looks tacky notwithstanding it’ll have cost the GNP of a small Latin American country.

But really, if any business

Likewise, M&S is increasingly losing its market share to budget clothing retailers like Primark. How the current CEOs of M&S and Tesco must look back enviously at the ‘luck’ of their predownturn predecessors!

What strikes me about all this is the role of luck - not just in business but politics too. Some politicians seem to have it - like Margaret

Thatcher - while others don’t - like Ed Miliband.

Whatever your personal feelings, Thatcher was an extremely lucky politician.

First off, Jim Callaghan postponed an autumn election he probably would have won. Next came Argentina’s President Galtieri, newly-elected and keen to grab the Falklands.

Against American advice, and despite the gamble of sending British forces 3,000 miles to recapture them, she pulled it off.

In 1984 along came another helping hand,

Scargill, who couldn’t have played into her hands more conveniently. With government contingency plans in place, including high coal stocks, transport arrangements and less dependence on coal-fired power stations, he opted to call a strike without a ballot early in the spring of 1984 (the worst possible timing, with a long summer ahead).

It wouldn’t be impossible to imagine Scargill as a closet Tory and Maggie’s secret ally!

Without Callaghan,

Galtieri and Scargill, Thatcher wouldn’t have been the PM she became.

And all this plus the windfall of North Sea oil.

How Ed Miliband must be hankering after that Thatcher luck and M&S fairy dust…

ATALUÑA got its vote but in the end it was a non-binding and unrecognised ballot on sovereignty and not a referendum.

A total of 6,228,531 people including 16-year-olds and foreign residents - could vote.

Only 2,305,290 did so and of these 80 per cent voted for independence.

The pro-independence faction was jubilant and proclaimed that Cataluña has demonstrated its wishes. What about the remainder of the population?

The pro-independence group clearly sees a glass that is partly full rather than nearly empty.

Optimism: preparing for hospital Erica Russell Watson: My journey – and I’m driving

Run up to 22nd October I’VE always said it’s good to have a plan of action, and now that I had a date for my mastectomy there were lots of things to organise.

Keeping occupied is important.

Whatever the illness or problem you have in life, I think it is essential to carry on as best you can. Put your loved ones and your wellbeing at the centre of your life and keep the negatives to the margin.

Being positive will automatically boost you, both physically and emotionally. A happy person can take on the world but if you feel sad and low, all you want to do is curl up in a ball.

Curling up in a ball is not an option!

I prescribe a daily dose of laughter to keep your engine running.

So that’s what I did; laugh and plan! Aside from making arrangements for my children, I needed to have a rethink about what I packed for the hospital stay.

For the previous hospital

visit I had taken towels and nightshirts, which proved to be unnecessary as the hospital provide you with a clean towel and a crisp nightie every morning.

Aside from toiletries, the most important thing is to have comfortable clothes to wear when you leave the hospital. Try and take loose fitting clothes, preferably ones that button up at the front. You have reduced mobility after surgery and have to consider clothing that will be easy to put on, and that will also accommodate drains if you leave hospital with a drain still in.

You also need to consider your bra. Soft, cotton sports bras without underwiring are best.

You will need to wear a bra after the operation if you have a lumpectomy to provide compression.

I had already been through that process and this time I would be having a mastectomy, so would need to be fitted with a mastectomy bra and prosthesis post-op.

Both of which I got free from an orthopaedic shop five minutes after leaving hospital, armed with my hospital prescription.

A fantastic service, easy and quick. I went in lopsided and came out with two boobs again! A massive pat on the back for the Spanish National Health System.

In between operations, I was called for my first physiotherapy session. It turned out that I would have to have rehabilitation after my cancer treatment but they checked my movement and gave me a series of exercises to prevent lymphedema, the swelling of tissues that I talked about in previous blogs, and to ensure that I would recover mobility in my right arm. I went home and did the exercises and found them pretty easy.

At first your arm will feel like the strings of a guitar, taught and unforgiving. Bit by bit you will be able to raise your arm and return to near normality. The things you used to take for granted, like getting dressed or reaching up for something, become easier.

The operation day loomed and I went into hospital the evening before. It took all of five minutes to register me and take me up to my hospital room. Who would I be sharing with this time, I wondered?

I was accompanied by my lovely friend Bob. I felt quite at home as this was my second time at the Hospital Comarcal in Vélez-Málaga in a month!

My roommate was a German lady called Erika and she was to be the third patient having their gallbladder removed that I

had shared with. Ok, this was familiar territory… what was not familiar territory was her husband who was one of the world’s most impressive snorers! This, I would find out the first night! To be fair to him, he did warn me that I would need to get a head start and get to sleep before him!

I thought it a little strange that he made up his bed on the floor, but I was later to realise that this meant he was in bashing distance of his wife’s fan! (It was October but very hot and the air conditioning had been turned off.)

I had my drip put in by a lovely nurse who recognised me from the last time - “You, here again, couldn’t stay away!” I replied, “Yes me again! I liked my first stay so much I just had to come back.” We smiled at each other. They made me comfortable and brought me dinner. The next nurse on the shift took one look at me and said, “You better give this lady a three-course meal or she’ll never make it through the 40 hours nil by mouth!”

What a memory she had!

Last time I was absolutely famished after the previous operation and on the point of sneaking off to the hospital café for an illicit bocadillo! So three courses it was! A cup of tea and then time for bed.

Well, I didn’t get much sleep in between the snorer

and his wife unceremoniously bashing him on the head with her fan, requesting his silence! They were a lovely couple but I was relieved that he would not be staying overnight again!

Eight in the morning and I was showered and ready for action. Into the operating theatre I went and was out in no time.

I felt a little groggy but was up and about a few hours after the op, managed to go to the loo on my own and even have a little stroll around.

I was so surprised that the mastectomy did not hurt.

Perhaps the pain would kick in tomorrow? It didn’t, much to my surprise, and I was mobile and able to shower.

Then I got my first look at the results of the op. Not bad really. I didn’t feel depressed about it - more relief that something so dangerous had been removed.

I imagine everyone will have different feelings about having a breast removed but I had mentally removed it before the op, so the physical reality was easier to deal with. A few more days in hospital and then the drain came out and I was given the all clear to go home.

Lovely Conchi came to pick me up and take me home.

Time to rest and await the results of the operation and the next step!

Cats that pounce on their owners

CONTINUING my series with Celia Haddon on cat aggression I look at Predatory Agression.

Sometimes a cat is bored and attacking humans becomes a substitute for hunting mice. The instinct to hunt is so strong that they will even leave a delicious meal in order to pounce on a rat.

Pouncing, say on feet, with the owner’s shriek, is exciting and fulfils its natural instinct. Sometimes kittens have been encouraged to pounce on toes and feet, so that cat is, so to speak, trained to behave in this way.

Install a cat flap, or even a cat ladder, so the cat can do some proper mousing. If you can’t do this, you MUST give the cat more to do.

Lots of games with fishing rod toys will help. Carnivores are hard-wired to hunt.

If better arrangements for the cat make no difference, try distracting the cat by throwing a toy, a wine cork, or something similar away from yourself, so that the cat locks on to a

different moving target. It is also possible to use sound as a discourager. Ring a small bell each time you start vacuuming (if your cat, like most cats, loathes the hoover). The idea is to link the bell with the unpleasant noise of the vacuum in the cat’s mind. Then use the bell when you see the cat about to pounce.

The aim is to deter the cat from pouncing, without the cat feeling that you yourself are frightening.

It is essential you

don’t run away, make rapid movements, flinch or shriek.

These reactions just make the hunting more fun for the cat!

Keep hands still. Cats are turned on by moving targets and high pitched sounds.

Wear wellies or, if the cat pounces or scratches higher up the leg, wear leather chaps or fishing trousers. Spray the wellies or chaps with a deterrent spray used to keep cats off gardens just in case this helps.

Other possibilities, arrange a timed feeder so the cat is feeding at times it might be pouncing, or simply shut the cat in a different room at times/places when you know it pounces.

Do not let it in the bedroom where it can pounce on your face.

Leila’s Milo, a shy Bengal kitten

Feeling uncomfortable they adopt bizarre behaviour. Leila has four Bengal cats, a mother and three kittens.

She finds even when friends come to visit at their home the kittens

disappear and act strangely.

Recently Leila hosted a dinner party, and the smallest of the kittens, Milo, simply disappeared outside and stopped eating for four days. He was finally tempted back to his food bowl when he could see the coast was definitely clear. Leila had booked a holiday some months before the kittens

had arrived and wasn’t sure how they would react to her absence. So she found a catsitter through an online network and invited her to come and stay for a few days before her own departure, to make sure they all got to know each other.

As expected Milo did his usual disappearing trick for a few days but eventually returned to his

lair cautious of the newcomer at first, then finally accepting treats served by her in his favourite bowl.

As the old adage goes, preparation is everything.

Get closer to nature on the Rock YOU don’t have to go far to get back to nature, even a visit to the local park area will reveal some of the Costa Blanca’s natural flora and fauna. But, a visit to Calpe’s Peñon de Ifach natural park will offer an unspoilt glimpse into the area’s natural world.

Declared a nature park in 1987, the rock overlooks Calpe’s coast, emerging from the sea and rising to a total height of 332 metres above sea-level. The Peñon is connected to the mainland by a narrow band of land and is characterised by its unique wildlife.

Although it is one of the least extensive natural areas in the Valencian Community, it is one of the most visited and in 2008 was declared one of the seven wonders of the Valencia Community in the category of ‘natural monument.’

The annual rainfall is 500mm and the vegetation is dominated by shrubs with high-density scrub or

The Rock has a large colony of yellow-legged seagulls which produces a suitable environment for some plants like Lavatera maritima, which grows in thickets, rocky soils and even at the foot of the cliffs.

PRESTIGIOUS property magazine Architectural Digest has named a Spanish apartment complex as one of the most ‘architecturally intriguing’ places to stay in the world listed on Airbnb, the website for people looking to rent.

The visually stunning Las Boas de Ibiza complex on the famous Balearic Island features in Architectural Digest’s list, being described as ‘an architectural wonder.’

The magazine states: “Pritzker prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel distils Ibiza’s playful atmosphere into the design of his colourful Boas development.

The apartment renting website - which is used primarily by holidaymakers - was set up in 2008 and has more than 800,000 listings in 34,000 cities in 190 countries.

Slow uptake of Golden Visa scheme prompts concerns ONLY 324 of the so-called ‘Golden Visas’ have been issued so far this year in Spain, prompting critics to wonder if the scheme has priced potential customers out of the market.

The scheme – aimed at non-EU nationals who will be granted Spanish residency if they buy property in excess of €500,000 – was introduced by the Spanish government in an effort to

encourage increased foreign investment in Spanish property.

However, a year later, the small number of investors to avail of the scheme would seem to indicate that it is not working.

In comparison to Spain’s uptake of 324 in a year, Portugal has issued 1,650 visas in two years, bringing in nearly €1 billion worth of investment. Spain has only generated €256 million since the

introduction of the initiative.

Spain was initially to set the bar at €160,000 in order to obtain the visa, but when the scheme was introduced the number was set at €500,000.

Experts believe that the scheme will eventually take off given the current renewed interest in Spanish property, and that numbers will significantly increase during the second year.

Housing pushes growth THE construction industry and the real estate sector will be the two major factors in the growth of Spain’s economy next year.

Because of an improvement in financing, a return of foreign investment, a recovery in domestic demand and a more frequent granting of mortgages, Spain’s economy should grow during 2015, and possibly more than the projected two per cent growth predicted by the Spanish government.

According to latest research by Arcano, the independent financial advisors, another driving force behind the growth of the Spanish economy will be the reactivation of the construction of new homes.

This will lead to a resurgence in the price of Spanish housing and lead to stability in the traditional powerhouse of the Spanish economy; the real estate sector.

The report suggests that a flow of new credit from the banks is growing, not just to individual investors but also to small and medium enterprises, further adding to economic growth.

Home sales in Spain saw a rise during the month of September, and Denmark’s Saxo Bank has also weighed in with their opinion that the bottom of the Spanish property market bust is imminent.

SLOVAKIAN engineers have come up with a way to avoid traffic jams. The AeroMobil 3.0, dubbed a ‘multimodal vehicle,’ is actually a flying car.

It has been designed and manufactured by a team led by chief designer Stefan Klein and Juraj Vaculik, cofounders of the AeroMobil company, in just 10 months after the release of a much more basic preprototype of the flying car.

“I’m very happy with what we were able to achieve in such a short time with the team of only 12 people.

AeroMobil 3.0 is not the end of a challenging project, it’s the beginning of a whole new adventure which may change how we look at the personal transport in the future,” said Stefan.

Javea draw with Monte Mar WITH two games in hand and 16 points down against top of the league Quesada, Javea Winter League team were hoping to close the gap with a good home win against Monte Mar, a team struggling towards the bottom of the table.

Sheri Fletcher’s team and Tony McKenna’s team stormed ahead and kept their lead to ensure Javea secured the overall shots difference, two points they desperately needed.

Of the remaining three teams, Nick Cole’s team had a nip and tuck game managing to draw level with one end to play but unfortunately dropped a two to lose the game 16 - 18. Likewise Alan Phillips’s team were only one shot down on the board going into the last end but dropped one to lose 12 - 14.

The Javea Northern league sides had mixed fortunes, Opal lost 3-7 to F G Swifts away in a hard fought battle without their Captain Wendy Symonds who is out of action with a bad back. However they retain their second position in the league table. Their Challengers team drew 1-1.

Javea Onyx played F G Swallows at home and had a resounding 8-2 victory. Javea Quartz were up against BBC Lions, a team so far undefeated this season, but managed a creditable 4-6 to raise them to fourth place in the league table. Their Challengers team also won 2-0.

Yellow ball for Pego

PEGO GOLF: Despite the wind and heavy rain, members played a Yellow Ball competition at Oliva Nova.

PEGO Golf Society played a ‘Yellow Ball Competition,’ at Oliva Nova. Although 43 started the competition, there were only 21 who finished it.

For the second week in succession, the day was ruined by the wind and the heavy rain. In the main competition, the winners were Feli Baybut,

With a superb round of a net 67 from his 15.4 handicap Simon Fox took the title. Quite a couple of days for Simon as, the previous day, he had a hole in one at the Lamont Classic at El Saler.

In second place, with a two under par 70 from a handicap of 9.3, was Colin Foster who also took home the prize for the best gross score of 82. Third place went to Mick Farmer with a net 73 off 10.4.

In the Campbell Lamont Order of Merit competition Shaun O’Gorman failed to score and his nearest rival,

John Day, had eight points for a total of 122 points just 10 behind with one game to play!

The previous week the annual playing of the Rose Bowl took place at Oliva Nova on a very blustery morning. The format is a Strokesford and was again sponsored by Richard Morris. It was the ladies that were in pole position making light of the weather.

Carla Chaszczewski came out on top winning her first Montgo trophy with a great score of 14 off her 23.1 handicap which was equivalent to 4 under par.

The Society plays at Oliva Nova on Friday December 5 for a stableford competition sponsored by Steve Crossan.

Good week for BBC

BBC entertained last year’s Champions and current League Leaders, Quesada in the Winter League.

In a highly competitive match, BBC recorded something of a landmark victory, winning on four of the five rinks, with an overall shot difference of 22, to take the match with an impressive score-line of 10-2.

The Berleen team suffered a setback losing their 100 per cent record

to top of the table Quesada.

Jaguars had another great week in the Northern League when they travelled to El Cid Swords and came away with an 8-2 victory. Their Challengers are still top of their League having won their match 15-10.

Tigers were at home to El Cid Shields where they had a tough match on their hands but managed to win 8-2.

Their Challengers team had a very good win 22-6.

The Lions were away to Javea Quartz, always a tight match and came away with six points to four.

Their challenger team lost by three shots 14-17.

A number of very close scores in the BBC Saturday Winter Fours League matches, with Bencid out in front in the league by two points from four other teams on six points.

LA GALIANA: Members of Marina Alta faced a challenge.

Bitter cold wind

AS the bitter cold wind swept across the scenic valley at La Galiana on a sunny morning, many members of the Marina Alta GS wished that they had worn long trousers and long-sleeved jumpers.

Consistent with the beautifully manicured course it was a challenge to keep to the fairways, then extremely difficult to judge the pace and read the contours of the immaculate, lightning fast greens.

When the cards were handed in on completion of the rounds there were no

surprises on the low scoring from a field of 20 players which included guests Ron and Brenda Walker that Trevor Warrilow brought along. Nearest the Pin on hole three was Geoff Allinson but no one hit the green on hole 16.

There was one division in the Stableford competition, with first place going to Kieran McLaughlin (29 points). Second was Brian Coombes (27).
