Conned her friends Woman jailed for €2million scam

By Gemma Quinn A FRAUDSTER has been jailed for five-and-a-half years after many of her Costa Blanca victims lost their life savings in a €2million scam.

Caryn Bates, 41, (pictured) and her half brother, Matthew Sullivan, 53, who received seven years, were sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court, Kent, UK. The pair conned their friends in both the UK and the Costa Blanca into handing over thousands of pounds to their bogus company, World Trading, promising high returns on their investments.

One such investor was Peter Harding. He met Caryn in 2005 when she was his neighbour in

Aspe. A former bank manager, Bates spoke with Peter about a ‘fantastic investment scheme’ using the currency market. Peter said: “I made an investment and got 2.5-3 per cent back as she said I would, so I never once thought it was a scam.”

Bates later left Aspe and moved to Catral.

In the course of the next five years, Peter believes he invested around €140,000 including his mother’s inheritance. However, whilst on holiday in Canada and trying to release funds, concerns began to arise: “They left me high and dry and that is when I knew something was wrong.”

Posting a simple message on a local web forum prompted a flood of enquiries from other investors in the Costa Blanca and UK which led to a UK police enquiry by the serious fraud unit.

It is thought they scammed up to 40 people. As Bates starts her prison sentence, Peter and other investors are unsure if they will ever see any of their money again: “I can’t believe how gullible I was. I classed her as friend,” he said.

Another of the ‘most wanted’ is captured OPERATION CAPTURA has seen the arrest in Alicante of one of Britain’s most wanted, Michael McCartney.

Just hours after the images of 13 criminals were released by Crimestoppers, the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Spanish Police, a member of the public called police with information on the 78 year-old. He was arrested in a flat in the centre of

Alicante and is now in police custody awaiting extradition.

McCartney had a European arrest warrant issued against him and is convicted of committing sexual offences against youngsters on different occasions over a number of years.

He was found guilty of all charges in March 2013, but the case was suspended

pending sentencing in April, although the defendant did not appear.

McCartney becomes the 54th wanted individual to be arrested as part of Operation Captura since its launch in 2006.

Ex arrested, accused of two fires POLICE have arrested a man they suspect of starting two house fires.

The 34-year-old is accused of setting alight a home in

Orihuela Costa where his expartner was staying with three children. They were able to escape the home unharmed with the help of a neighbour.

Moments later the victim received a call from her ex saying he was going to burn the Torrevieja home they once shared together.

As police

arrived the property in San Luis was on fire with the man reportedly trying to commit suicide inside, but he eventually escaped from the building.

Households still tighten belts HOUSEHOLDS in the Valencia Region are spending almost €600 less each year on clothing and footwear compared to 2008.

The National Statistics Institute (INE) says it is clear from the Consumer Expenditure Survey, that households in the community have significantly reduced purchases over the last five years.

In 2008, the first full year of turmoil, Valencian families spent €29,464.44. In 2012, so far the hardest year of the crisis, spending fell over 11 per cent to €26,036.74.

Clothing and footwear saw one of the biggest cuts.

In 2008, according to the INE, households were spending on average €1,853.30 each year. Last

year, the amount dropped 30.8 per cent to an average of €1,281.84.

Spending on leisure activities has decreased by 20.8 per cent, transport fallen 17.3 per cent and food by 11.1 per cent. Spending on the home increased by 3.97 per cent with bills and taxes rising. Over the past six years, electricity has risen almost 70 per cent.

OVEMBER 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The day aims to raise awareness of the fact that women are subject to rape, domestic abuse and other forms of violence.

The date is based on the 1960 assassination of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic which was ordered by Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.

In December 1999, the date received its official United Nations (UN) resolution.

Events are held throughout many parts of the world on this day, including Spain, to express rejection of violence against women.

In the past decade, more than 700 women have died in Spain at the hands of their partners or former partners, and according to the government, 600,000 women every year are the victims of domestic violence, although there are only 140,000 complaints on average every year against the abusers.

There is not a unique profile for victims of gender violence.

Amongst the 700 who have died, there were foreign women who had no family or friends in Spain, disabled women, and women with no studies, but there were also those with university degrees, members of political parties,

NEWS Rent help in demand MORE THAN 5,500 applications for social rent have been made in Alicante Province.

A year after the launch of the programme to help evicted families or those facing eviction, and the Department of Infrastructure said they were ‘completely overwhelmed’ at the number of requests.

Across the Valencian Community, 11,308 applications have been made for the 625 homes available.

Of these, 233 have already been assigned to tenants who lost their property, with another 68 expected to soon receive their new occupants.

Fourteen municipalities have now signed up to the scheme with another 60 across the community interested in the plan.

NEWS Bailout on hold ALICANTE Town Hall could have a long wait for its €27 million bailout.

Spain’s tax authority Hacienda, wants more details of the council’s economic adjustment programme before handing over the money requested last September.

The time limit for presenting further documentation setting out proposed tax rises and cuts to services expires this week. Once the information has been received, Finance minister Cristobal Montoro will decide whether or not the €27 million will be forthcoming to enable city hall to balance its books and pay suppliers.

The Ministry is not asking for more cuts, said Alicante’s Councillor for Finance Juan Seva.

Almost 160 prisoners in foreign jails ALMOST 160 people from the Valencia Region are currently serving prison sentences abroad; an increase of 13 per cent from 2008.

At present, Peru ranks as the country with more inmates from the region, with a total of 27, compared to 16 five years ago. Spain’s Consul in the Peruvian capital Lima,

Andres Collado, said: “The majority of Spanish prisoners receive a monthly allowance of about €63, with overcrowding being a problem within the jails.”

Colombia has seen the number of inmates double from 12 to 24 and Brazil has 18. In Europe, French prisons are home to 11 prisoners from Valencia, and Portugal, with 10.

Calls for clemency for former Torrevieja mayor EIGHTY-FIVE per cent of the PP members in the Valencian Parliament have signed a petition

for clemency for Torrevieja’s former mayor, Pedro Angel Hernandez Mateo.

Centre owed €800,000 THE 100 workers of the Infanta Leonor Day Centre and Residence for People with Autism in Alicante have protested against their lack of payment.

They gathered at the Department of Social Welfare calling for payment of the 40 per cent of the aid they

receive each year, amounting to almost €800,000.

Cristina Martinez, representing the workers said: “We are owed almost three payrolls, the latest is we are to be paid before the end of the year, but we have no exact date yet.”

The High Court of Justice of the Valencian Parliament has ordered a three year jail sentence for the former mayor for alleged fraud and not following the correct procedures in putting out to tender the waste collection services in Torrevieja.

A Facebook campaign has already been set up calling for his sentence to be dropped, as previously reported in the Euro Weekly News and now a petition has gone around PP members. Deputy of the PP Andres Ballester stressed that those who signed did so in a “personal capacity” and “no one was forced.”

Nothing unusual for our dedicated staff who work week in, week out, 52 weeks a year to make each of our editions along the Costa Blanca, Almeria, Costa del Sol, Axarquia and Mallorca the best they can be. We never miss an issue, unlike some of our would-be competitors.

That effort, put in seven days a week, 24/7, can be noticed when the reader picks up the EWN. It is the best read on the Costas.

More than 33,000 antibiotics taken daily MORE THAN 33,000 antibiotics are consumed daily in the Murcia Region.

According to the Servicio Murciano de Salud (SMS), 2.3 per

cent of citizens take some type of antibiotic treatment daily, which implies that each citizen consumes an average of a course of treatment each year.

€1m for young business ONE MILLION EUROS has been set aside for Murcia’s youth to help them set up their own businesses.

The Regional Councillor for Education, Universities and Employment, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, says the new scheme aims to encourage

the unemployed to set up their own business by providing grants of up to €10,000. Those eligible must be aged 30 or under, registered as seeking work and as independent workers with Social Security for a minimum of two years.

During 2012 there were 1,266,519 prescriptions for systemic antibiotics, of which 40 per cent corresponded to the group of penicillin, with a cost of around €7.3 million; a saving of 13.74 per cent from 2011 when more than €8.7 million was spent on obtaining 1.37 million antibiotic drugs.

The Director General of Planning, Health and Pharmaceutical and Research, Jose Antonio Garcia called upon the prudent use of antibiotics and praised the figures for showing “a favourable change in the use of antibiotics in the region.”

THE proposed development of 5,000 houses in the Sierra Espuña, Murcia, has been scrapped.

Aledo Town Hall announced the plans under its PGOU municipal urban plan including proposals to build the new properties along with a balneario and artificial beach area.

The plan was initially approved, but this was then annulled, a decision appealed by the town hall.

However, the Supreme Court has rejected the appeal with lack of water resources believed to be the reason behind the decision.

A similar decision relating to urban developments in the Jumilla municipality has also been stopped due to the lack of water resources.

Paedophile could dodge extradition SPAIN’S Public Prosecutor has opposed Morocco’s request to extradite paedophile Daniel Galvan.

The convicted child molester, who once lived in Torrevieja, was serving a 30-year sentence in Morocco for child rape but was erroneously freed last August.

He was amongst prisoners requesting a transfer to a Spanish jail, but was instead included amongst those receiving a royal pardon from King Mohammed VI. Galvan was rearrested in Murcia shortly after returning to Spain and has been in custody since then.

As a Spanish subject he cannot be extradited and, because the pardon cannot be annulled, he should be freed immediately, his defence lawyer claimed.

Remaining in Spain does not mean that he will not have to serve the prison term, the Prosecution department clarified.

Galvan is also involved in a Spanish prosecution after he was recognised by a young Torrevieja girl during the publicity surrounding his release.

She is now 13 and he abused her between 2005 and 2007 before he left Spain for Morocco, she told a Torrevieja judge in August.

What a hoot!

THE Actors Studio had the audience laughing with their last production ‘Rib Ticklers’ at the Cultural Centre San Miguel.

Guardia Civil falsify fines TWO members of the Guardia Civil in Navarra have been sentenced to two years in prison and fined €1,500 for cancelling fines for footballers and businessmen.

The officers, a man and a woman, will not serve time in prison as they have no criminal records.

They altered reports to prevent 21 people from paying fines, including former Osasuna football players, Javier Camuñas, Walter Pandiani, Ludovic Delporte and Roversio Rodrigues; the club’s former manager, Angel Vizcay, and businessman Manuel Entrecanales, from shipping company Acciona.

They were arrested in 2011, charged with corruption, document falsification and computer damages.

They have paid compensation of €12,000 to the General Traffic Department.

OLIVE OIL: New rules. approved by the Cabinet within Plan of Action in the EU Olive Oil Sector, oil given to clients must be in labelled packaging or bottles.

The containers must have opening systems which are broken upon the first use, as well as others to prevent them from being refilled.

Oils which they have already purchased which do not comply with the new rules can be given to clients until February 28, 2014.

Similar rules to guarantee the quality and authenticity of the oils served are already in place in Italy and Portugal. They also aim to improve the image of the product while informing clients of its characteristics.

Scottish suspects in Yeremi disappearance TWO Scottish paedophiles serving prison sentences for murder and sexual assault are being questioned in connection with the disappearance of Yeremi Vargas.

Charles O’Neill, 50, and William Lauchlan, 36, were living and working in Gran Canaria when seven-yearold Yeremi vanished from his home on March 10, 2007.

They were reportedly in Los Llanos neighbourhood of Vecindario around the time he disappeared.

Guardia Civil said: “It’s not a tourist area you’d expect foreigners like them to be visiting.”

The pair refused to speak to Guardia Civil last month and they are now being treated as suspects, as well as Ewan Wilson, who took the pair into his home after an earlier sentence.

SUSPECTS: Charles O’Neill and William Lauchlan.

Wilson visited them in the resort of Maspalomas in the same month that Yeremi vanished.

O’Neill and Lauchlan were jailed for life in 2010 for murdering Allison McGarrigle, 39, in 1997, to stop her from reporting the abuse of a young boy.

In the 13 years between the murder and their convictions they served jail time for sexual offences against children.

Yeremi’s mother Ithaisa Suarez told a British newspaper four years ago she suspected that the pair was behind her son’s abduction.

Guardia Civil have released pictures of the suspects and are hoping for information from people who hired the services of Rainbow Cleaning Service S.L., run by the pair at the time, who may be able to reveal details.

IT feels like I’ve just cleansed the cobwebs off my face from Halloween, but as I strolled through the streets this week despite the warm sun there was a real feel of Christmas in the air.

Shop assistants were busy decorating windows and putting up fairy lights, while adverts are

strategically putting ideas in our heads of presents we should buy.

“Oh no, ho ho ho!” is about as much festive spirit as I could muster up.

After paying for the mortgage, various loans, the electricity, flights back to home for Christmas as well as an array of other unforeseen costs, my Christmas piggy bank savings are at an all time low. Right now - at the most expensive time of the year - I’m broke!

What if community has no legal existence?

Q. We live in a community of 12 houses. In 1997 our community was registered by the original builder in a very simple way, providing for the maintenance of the common elements. This registration was handwritten, with an official book of the minutes of the meetings.

This book was never used and has been lost. Statutes were never made and community rules now are limited to the use of the pool. Up to now we never had any problem.

But recently some houses were sold and new owners of different You and the nationalities have moved in. So my Law in Spain question is: What is the legal status

G B (by e-mail) A. In strict terms, your community has no legal status at all and its decisions have no legal force. A handwritten piece of paper does not constitute registration.

However, you do have statutes. If a Community of Property Owners does not make any special statutes, they are by law governed by the terms of the Law of Horizontal Property.

Second, it is possible that your builder registered the community at your nearest Property Registry. Communities are registered in a special section here because they own property. Your pool, for example, is owned by the community.

So, you may be registered without knowing it. In addition, Spanish courts have in many cases accepted the legal existence of such informal communities because of their continued functioning.

Your best course of action is to instruct a lawyer experienced in Community

affairs to help form a legal Community with powers to compel payment of fees.

Am I a total Scrooge if I suggest a ‘Cheap Christmas’ to my family?

Or will they be thinking, ‘I like the idea of that, I’m smashed too!’

This is the thing about Christmas, while it is a fun time where all the family gets together and eats and drinks their hearts out, it’s also a time of the year that makes people feel really stressed and feel guilty too.

If your brother gets you the latest iPhone, but you only get him socks, it’s mortifying. It’s a minefield deciding how much to spend on each other and no one wants to underspend, so that’s why we often spend more

than intended - for fear of looking cheap.

But if you’re broke, you’re broke. That’s the reality of the situation and considering the financial mess the world is in right now, you can be guaranteed that many family members are feeling the same pinch.

So go ahead - set down some ground rules to make Christmas more affordable this year. Try presents just for the kids, or a Secret Santa type of idea where 50 quid is spent on one nice present for one member of the family. As long as there are mince pies and a log fire a ‘Cheap Christmas’ sounds just perfect.

Eating habits are changing SPAIN’S ready-meals segment is expected to grow by 3.4 per cent a year in value terms between 2012 and 2017, making it the third-fastest growing category among food sectors.

The forecast was made in a new report issued by UKbased consumer market research company Canadean. The expected rise has been attributed to a change in the eating habits of Spanish consumers, who are shifting to prepared meals instead of eating out.

The report also noted that Spain has been reeling under the impact of challenging economic conditions, with uncertainties surrounding the euro having further affected consumer spending.

Spain’s clean exit from bank bailout

FINANCE ministers from Eurozone countries have given their vote of confidence to Spain after it elected to make a ‘clean break’ from a bank bailout programme.

Jeroen Dijsselbloem, President of the EU’s Eurogroup, welcomed Spain’s decision to exit the aid programme in January 2014.

Spain will be joining Ireland in making a clean break.

Spain dipped into the bailout fund to the tune of €41bn in 2012 to recapitalise banks after the property market crashed.

Speaking after a meeting of the group of finance ministers Mr Dijsselbloem said: “Both countries have always shown strong commitment towards the implementation of their programmes.

“This has shown results, as the recent developments on the financial markets have shown. The Irish and Spanish people have gone through a difficult period, but I am now confident that their efforts will pay off in the coming years.

Now these economies are back on the road to recovery.

“We fully support Spain’s decision to exit the programme. Spanish banks are now stronger, more resilient and supervision and regulation have been tightened.

SPANISH drinks producer Torres has announced plans to release a new cava in 2015 as it looks to launch a range of wines in the next five years, reports the UK’s Drinks Business Review.

The company’s move is aimed at producing a niche, premium cava with initial output of less than 5,000 cases per year.

Torres said the new wine, a blend of international and local grape varieties, will be targeted towards the Chinese market.

Dia success THE Iberian peninsula has been one of the worst affected eurozone markets, with headline retail sales dropping month after month.

But there has been one genuine success story over the past two years - Dia, a hard discounter that became an independent company in 2011 after being spun off by Carrefour.

Reputation as probably the worst company in Spain!

TELEFONICA/MOVISTAR must surely be living up to their reputation as probably the worst company in Spain - yes worse than power company Sevillana/Endesa!

Their incompetence and that of their operators is world breakingly above others. The new automatic answering system has taken a turn for the worse, if that was possible.

If you don’t press the right button or say the right word it just cuts out on you. If you are lucky you may eventually get to speak to an equally confusing non electric person!

I reported a fault on my business phone number. We could not receive or make calls, yet if someone phoned in they could hear the phone ringing.

The fault was reported but nothing was done, so I called again. This time what appeared to be an intelligent person took details of my fault - again.

When I asked if they could divert incoming calls to my mobile she gave me a code - to put in to my failed phone.

I did explain that as the phone was not working it would seem to be a pointless and useless exercise.

Could you not do it from the central exchange I asked? No. Why not? Because I am unable to. Can I speak to your superior? No. I had the same argument the following morning having had no contact from the technical department.

Later the same day I phoned yet again - this time a very helpful lady arranged the divert in three minutes.

No wonder they keep all their operators in Chile or South America. It wouldn’t be safe for them to walk the streets of Madrid.

If licences were to be introduced here the revenue from them would more than pay for the employment of dog wardens and possibly pay for dogs homes rather than be dependent on charity. Maybe the rest of us would not have to suffer the incessant barking of so many dogs.

If owners can not afford a licence, how can they afford the expensive food these animals must have?

Silly rules RE the story about communities of residents in Mijas (Costa del Sol, Issue 1480) wanting to raise a petition against the enforcement of swimming pool

legislation on older properties.

The communities do have a point. These regulations at times lack common sense.

On my community the shallow toddlers’ paddling pool was filled in as it was ‘too near’ the main swimming pool.

As a result there is nowhere for the toddlers to splash around in except the main pool, which is of course much deeper, and as a result much more dangerous.

So the ‘safety’ regulations have resulted in an increased danger for young children. The law of unintended consequences in operation, with no common sense applied.

IT certainly seems that the issue over green waste has taken on a degree of momentum. It is positive that CLARO has taken up the issue supported by the Popular Party.

The responses of the mayor to the legitimate concerns of Orihuela Costa residents who are forced to live in a dirty, poorly maintained area were insulting to every person living on the coast. There are no recycling services provided on the coast. There is no site where green waste can be deposited by the residents of the coast. To blame the inhabitants for a blatant lack of a garden waste disposal system by a councillor from the Green Party is beyond believe.

The reaction of the councillors sitting 30 kilometres away in Orihuela to the disgusting state of Orihuela Costa just proves that these people have no right to have any control over the coast. The sooner Orihuela Costa gains its rightful independence the better!

Lunch date In reply to the letter (EWN Issue 1480 ), sorry Olivia Qualtrough, but in reality you are the person who is ‘naive and ignorant.’ I have been a practising naturist for more than 20 years and I have never, ever, sat naked on any restaurant seat nor have I ever seen any other naturist do so.

The etiquette is to always to take a towel and use it. The same goes for beach beds, sauna seats, etc.

In fact, just so you can be more informed in future, I invite you to join me for lunch at a chiringuito (beach bar) on the naturist beach here at Vera Playa. No dress code - just a towel!

BIT of a ‘told you so’ blurb this week.

Normally I hate trumpet blowers, but I’m not averse to a little input on occasions. Firstly, some years ago, during the vilification of Prince Charles over his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, I predicted one day their affair could turn out to be one of the great Royal love affairs in British history.

I think the couple, who are obviously deeply in love, have come through the whole saga with dignity and a new, thoroughly deserved respect.

Camilla is far more suited to him than Diana, who, with all due respect, was nothing more than a somewhat flaky, manipulative star-struck clothes horse; one who Charles was bundled into marrying merely to produce an heir to the throne.

Camilla not only ‘looks right’ at his side, but with her somewhat zany views and slightly off the wall projects, totally fits in with Charles ‘talking to

plants’ and environmental attitudes. I wish them both all the very best and a large dose of happiness in their life journey together.

The second ‘trumpet call’ hits a somewhat sourer note. I’ve actually lost count of the times over the past 15 years or so I’ve taken a leaf from Enoch Powell’s book and predicted this whole immigration fiasco would finally lead to rioting and bloodshed on the streets.

The latest statement from David Blunkett does, I think, finally exonerate me from all who accused me of

‘ranting’ and ‘scaremongering.’

Mr Blunkett’s comments, that the influx of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of Eastern Europeans, with their poor living standards and alien cultures, could lead to violence on the streets of Britain, is no doubt a welcome and sane observation, but too late.

Even now there has been a deafening silence from most other leading politicians on the subject. It’s no good waiting for many British suburbs to resemble Syria or Beirut before they clamour to air their views on the nation’s media. In less than two months hoards of these people will pour into an already beleaguered Britain. They will have nowhere to live. No money and no jobs. What on earth is Britain Camilla and going to do with them all?

Charles - one of Don’t ask me, I’m only an old the great Royal hack, one hit wonder from way love affairs. back. I’ll tell you something mind, Britain had better gird her loins for an unprecedented rise in crime rates, hoards of beggars littering the streets, a capitulation of the NHS and benefits infrastructure and unparalleled rioting on the streets of Britain, and all down to incompetent politicians that have well and truly shafted the British public.

Muslim allies IT is very wrong of ‘Leapy Lee’ to ridicule the Burka as a way of dress.

Although I agree there are situations where it is totally inappropriate, this is the fault of incompetent politicians and there is no reason why it should cause offence in normal everyday multicultural life.

He is additionally very wrong to comment as to why one does not see remembrance poppies worn on a Burka. Many of those Muslim women must carry, in their hearts, memories of their loved ones - the older ones their husbands and brothers, the younger ones their grandfathers who died fighting in WW2, alongside British soldiers in the Western Desert, Burma and Italy.

So, please Leapy, do try to be more objective.

Is it ‘adios’ America?

HEN a friend spent a month touring the United States, I could appreciate his being impressed.

It is easy to be seduced by panoramic grandeur and the colour of new cultures vastly different from one’s own.

Had his itinerary taken him to the hundreds of tent cities, to bankrupt metropolis like Detroit that now resemble Berlin 1945, he might have been less impressed. Country music icon Merle Haggard must have had psychic powers when in 1982 he penned the ballad ‘Are the Good Times Really over for Good?’

The country song’s poignant lyrics hark back to Paradise Lost, a countrified America of domestic bliss, of values that have since disappeared. It was ‘a time before Elvis, before the Vietnam War came along.’

Change means that Haggard’s longed for America can now be found only in a few remote towns. Saturday Evening Post

illustrator, Norman Rockwell (1894 - 1978), depicted the lost America evoked by the wistful melody.

A flick through his illustrations will tell you more about ordinary life in the United States 1921 - 1960 than any number of history books.

In Haggard’s country music hit, he describes the United States as now ‘rolling down hill like a snowball rolling to hell.’

Today, the country’s leading politicians and its best journalists repentantly contemplate the abyss. The American dream has turned into the American nightmare.

If the US was United States Inc. it would be declared insolvent. The directors would likely be jailed for embezzlement, counterfeit money printing, corruption, share dealing, lying to the receivers; barred from holding office.

You do not believe me. Google ‘List of American federal politicians convicted of crimes.’ You will be forgiven for thinking that you mistyped and found San Quentin Penitentiary by mistake.

American isolationism could leave the anti-Russia debt-riddled EU isolated too. It would be easy to fall back on the words of the great American writer, Mark Twain: “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” Who is right, the nation’s writer laureate or a country music singer?

Interesting times lie ahead.

WO bastions of British life were in the news recently.

Both with their backs up against the wall in increasingly tough economic times. Will both survive and flourish? Let’s take a closer look.

First up, Ryanair. The airline’s been on a massive charm offensive of late, desperately trying to improve its badlytarnished image.

It’s going to improve its website, slash charges for not printing boarding cards, even allow you to reserve seats.

As CEO Michael O’Leary, who did the round of TV interviews, put it: “I want to be loved by my customers as much as I love them. Boy, are we listening and responding.”

Good grief! It was as if, say, John Lewis were changing its slogan from “Never knowingly undersold” to “Always out to MICHAEL O’LEARY: Chairman and chief executive officer of Ryanair.

Next, M&S. When the company announced its clothing sales were down by 1.3 per cent, it blamed everything from rival shops to the warm late summer.

But it’s not the wrong sort of weather that’s undermining M&S but the wrong sort of clothes - and management.

I have advice for M&S. Stop trying to be all things to all people. Cut your losses and just stick to chic good quality knitwear and underwear.

No more elasticated trousers, peasant-style tent tops or frills, please!

But it’s those Leibovitz advertising posters that shock me most: a bevy of super-successful women including Helen Mirren seemingly dragooned together at gun-point. The backdrop of the City, the world of the glass ceiling,

This lot look as if they’ve been corralled to the stern of a booze-free ‘booze cruise’ and are considering going for broke and swimming for it.

Who authorised such misjudged advertising?

Finally, Ryanair may

never be ‘lovable,’ but it’ll be no more annoying than its rivals. And M&S? This used to be known for good quality basics at affordable prices. Now it too often stands for overpriced dowdiness.

It can bring in all the stars it likes but it still can’t beat its rivals for on-trend, well-priced clothing.

It’s talking the talk all right, but the walk’s more

of a stagger on life support.

re you a mother with a supersatisfying power job, which earns you praise and cash in equal measure? And do you still find time to prepare nutritious home-cooked meals for the kids you drop and collect at school every day, never forgetting or missing any important event in their lives and finding time to help them with their homework as well as a nighttime story?

Oh, and your home is an oasis of cleanliness and calm. No staff required.

If this is you, then congratulations. You may be the only person in the world to ‘have it all.’ Before having children, I was convinced this would be me, which must have amused mother nature no end.

As Oprah Winfrey says: “You can have it all, just not at the same time.” Being an expat mother makes getting even a remote semblance of having it all even more unlikely, without a support network of family to rely on and with fulfilling work opportunities limited.

So, it was with some disappointment I saw the Hollywood version of an excellent book on the subject, ‘I don’t know how she does it?’ written by English journalist and writer, Alison Pearson.

In the book, the working mother faces all the trials and tribulations this brings feeling inadequate both at home and at work, never able to give 100 per cent you are bound to fall short.

The novel is funny, truthful and gritty, ending in the-less-than saintlike main character making a choice between work

Real life is not so simple. ‘Have it all’ and you will scarcely see the kids, who will be largely raised by nannies (since stay at home daddies are still a rarity), or opt to become ‘just mum’ despite the years of studying and pre-kids work as doctor,

By the time your nest is empty, and you could dedicate yourself fully to a career again, you will probably be past your employ-by date and your skills antiquated.

but for those who stayed with the family it can be a fraught time.

Psychologists urge so-called ‘emptynesters’ to reconnect with life again - by learning a new skill, taking a course in something that really interests you and travelling now that there is no one left to cook for, mentor and guide (other than your husband, who can either join you or fend for himself for a while). Travelling alone is not as difficult as it sounds - there are many alternatives these days - from yoga retreats to educational tours of China or cooking trips to Italy.

One friend who found herself in this situation retrained as a psychotherapist, having already practiced by counselling the children all those years. Or why not follow through on a business idea you’ve been considering? Now could be the time to set up that boutique, restaurant or take up day trading on the stock exchange from home.

If you still can’t face that empty nest, take advice from that wise woman Dorothy Parker, who once suggested that, “The best way to keep children at home is to make the home atmosphere pleasant, and let the air out of the tyres.”

The quite difficult questions proved to be a real test of general knowledge for the 70 people who attended. Whilst the quiz was challenging, the fish and chip supper was said to be excellent.

The winning team was the ‘Sextytets’ with 80 points, but the big cheer of the night went to the Pedros who got the ‘booby’ cake as a prize.

T seldom occurs to career politicians that figures who convince inside the party do not necessarily cut it with the public. Neither do they grasp that elections are easier to win if party favourites are family favourites.

Even committed PSOE supporters and those owing him their jobs agree that Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba should not lead the party into the 2015 general elections. The man who took the PSOE to two crushing defeats in 2011 is therefore unlikely to put himself through the coconut-shy of primaries despite a rapturous reception at the PSOE’s recent Political Conference.

Brave new policies and a brave new PSOE were euphorically applauded, encouraging Rubalcaba and party grandees to delay naming the evil day, a.k.a. the primaries, as long as possible.

They are talking about summer 2014 or even autumn, waiting to evaluate the party’s showing in next May’s European elections.

If the party wants to see itself in phoenix-mode it needs primaries as soon as possible. Rubalcaba

HIS November 22 will be the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F Kennedy.

I was 20 years old, and seven days earlier had boarded a transatlantic liner in Southampton. JFK had become an icon in Europe since his election in 1960 and had transformed the image of America.

The President and his family were a sophisticated civilised, cultural elite who acted and spoke in a way Europeans could understand. They had become the Royal family of America and, like so many young people, I was enticed by the American dream.

On November 22, the ship was one day out from New York. Clocks and watches had already been set to Eastern time and everybody on board was thinking about the final night’s gala dinner. At about 1pm I was making my way up the main staircase for lunch when I noticed a large blackboard on which was scrawled ‘President Kennedy dead, RIP.’ Why would somebody write something so stupid, I remarked.

On reaching the main promenade deck I noticed groups of people clustered around radio sets. It soon sunk in that the notice had not been written as a silly gesture, the president had indeed been shot and was in hospital. When the news came through that the president had died no passenger was able to hold back tears.

The gala dinner was cancelled and a memorial service was held in its place.

Early the following morning the ship entered New York harbour passing the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline, shrouded in mist, and into the Hudson river to dock at the city’s passenger port.

After passing through immigration, far simpler than today, I set foot for the first time on American soil. A taxi took me to a small west-side hotel. After unpacking I ventured out into deserted streets. It was cold and overcast with newspapers blowing across the street in the icy wind.

It reminded me of the final scene in the movie ‘On the Beach.’

With food and drinks purchased from corner stores, I spent three days glued to the old TV set in the hotel bedroom. Lyndon Johnson had immediately been sworn in as president on Airforce One and the police had apprehended the

supposed assassin. But events turned to incredulity when Jack Ruby shot Oswald dead as he was leaving the Dallas police station, live on TV. Then the funeral took place in Washington with the president’s family and world leaders in the cortege slowly following the horse drawn carriage on its way to Arlington cemetery.

After travelling around the country, I worked in New York until June when I booked a passage on a transatlantic liner taking advantage of the summer weather and groups of American college students travelling to Europe. It was a perfect ending to a great adventure, which had begun so tragically.

I had seen enough of America to understand why JFK was killed and was a fully, fledged conspiracy theorist long before Oliver Stone’s movie, JFK. While the West and East coast were more sophisticated, cosmopolitan centres, the rest of the country remained backward and insular. Gun ownership was an intrinsic part of society. I had witnessed run down city centres and a great deal of poverty across the country as well as racism and a strong North-South divide which still seemed to be a legacy of the Civil War, contrasting with pockets of immense wealth.

When I learnt that three university students from New York had been murdered in Mississippi by opponents of

the civil rights movement at about the same time I was passing through the State with a New Jersey registered car, I thought how close I had come to danger.

Four years later in 1968 I was living in Paris. It was a dramatic year: as well as the student revolution in Paris, the Tet offensive had started in Vietnam, Russian tanks rolled into Prague, Martin Luther King had been gunned down and Robert Kennedy was assassinated. He was perhaps a greater loss than his brother.

Acclaimed by young and old, rich and poor, white and black, across the country, he was clearly on his way to the White House. Thousands lined the tracks on the final train journey to Washington carrying his coffin on an open carriage.

A few years ago, after a visit to the Gettysburg battle site, I went to Arlington cemetery to see their burial place. There was another young president in the White House idolised by millions of people. But Barack Obama has not been able to fulfil his promises either and America is more divided than ever.

The American Dream was an illusion.

MEET UP WITH FRIENDS: The easiest way to increase your brain power.

Good excuse to hit the town with friends BEING sociable could boost your brain power.

That’s according to a study which shows that parts of the

brain are bigger and better connected in people with lots of friends.

The finding comes from scientists at Oxford University (UK) who asked

18 men and women how many friends they had met, spoken to on the phone or emailed in the past month.

The average number of

friends contacted was 20 and scans showed that around half a dozen brain regions were bigger in those who were more sociable and

had more friends.

It is hoped that these findings could help scientists under-stand more about how the brain reacts in social situations

which could lead to new treatments for autism, schizo-phrenia and other conditions in which people struggle to interact with others.

Heart attack gene discovered A GENE which raises a person’s risk of having a heart attack has been discovered by German researchers.

The German Heart Centre in Munich believes carriers of the gene are 15 per cent more likely

to have a heart attack and say that more than half of the 30,000 people they studied had the gene. The genetic mutation results in the person having stickier blood platelets which make heart attacks more likely.

The researchers are now working on a test for doctors to use to establish whether a person has the gene and they hope the findings will make treatment better for those at a higher risk.

In training for Torrevieja spring Andalucian fiestas

By Mike Walsh FOLLOWING a summer break, Raquel Peña, celebrated flamenco artiste and choreographer, is offering lessons to Sevillana novices.

The dance, a light form of flamenco, has its 18th Century origins at Sevilla’s April Feria.

The maestra’s classes welcome learners of all ages and nationalities, lessons are in English and Spanish; men are welcome too. The easy-going Raquel says, “Why not come along and see if it is for you?”

The studio at Pilar de la Horadara is easily accessed. Close to the N332 it has free and easy parking. The lessons are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings. The fees are €25 per month.

Chocolate chip cookies, a delicious tasting accident CHOCOLATE chip cookies are a delicious and world known snack, but not everyone knows they were originally a culinary accident.

American Ruth Graves Wakefield is said to have accidentally made the firstever chocolate chip cookies in her restaurant, The Toll House Inn in Massachusetts.

In the 1930s, after running out of baker’s chocolate while making chocolate cookies, Wakefield decided to use pieces from a Nestle chocolate bar.

EWN CHOCOLATE CHIP: Discovered by accident.

But instead of melting, the chocolate maintained its shape, giving birth to the popular biscuit.

Wakefield published the recipe in her cookbook Toll House Tried and True

Recipes, and it rapidly became a baking favourite.

Rumour has it that she sold the recipe to Nestle for a lifetime supply of chocolate.

Robot restaurant opened in China A RESTAURANT in China has replaced its waiters with robots that cook, serve and attend to customers.

Robot Restaurant, in the city of Harbin, has a workforce of 20 robots that tirelessly work for five hours.

After that they need two hours to recharge their batteries.

But they seem to be very efficient as they make noodles, fry or steamdumplings and bring the food to the tables running along tracks on the floor.

The only humans in the restaurant, apart from the customers, are the kitchen supervisors. The restaurant opened in the summer of 2012.

Bargain hunt auction THE Bargain Hunt auction in Sucina was supported mainly by people from Riquelme Golf Resort. Louise and Darren laid on snacks for the occasion and gave the use of Carol’s Bar facilities free of charge.

They opened their doors early as opposed to the normal time of 7pm, happy to support a community effort.

There was a wide range of items on view and direct bids on the

day realised a clear profit of €136 for the charity, HELP Murcia Mar Menor.

Darren and Louise added to that by donating a collection box which contained another €35, making the full total of €171.

The star item of a one week’s holiday in Portugal, donated by Mike Stoddard, was not sold but will be carried forward to the next event.

THERE are now a number of schools being run by vets, which is an excellent idea for both puppy and owner, and many training clubs around.

It can be daunting deciding what class to sign up for because many people with dogs of 12/18 months still refer to them as puppies.

Often I get a phone call from someone saying saying “oh, he is only a puppy of 18 months.” Many people calculate according to

children’s age. Wrong.

Dogs of around 12/18 months are already working as police dogs and sniffer dogs, many others are helping disabled people.

So we have a lot to think about to go forward with a dog that is an adult.

First the dog must learn to get on with other dogs and people.

There is nothing worse than having a dog pulling you along and wanting to fight with other dogs.

Keep in mind that over half the dogs born are disposed of by having them put to sleep or sent to a rescue centre before the age of two years due to behavioural problems.

What a sad situation if only they had gone to a training club.

DOG TRAINING: essential for a well balanced pet. trainer. It is always a good idea to watch a couple of training clubs before you decide to proceed further.

Communication is the key word when training, so watch the others at the club and after the lesson chat to them to see how they are getting along.

It might take a few lessons - not many - but you will end up with a wonderful pet that will be a joy to accompany you on walks, come back when called and sit and lie down when told.

The Vega Baja Garden Club THE November meeting of the Garden Club was opened by Val Duckworth, who reminded everyone of the many gardening tasks awaiting this month.

These jobs range from tidying and cutting back trees and shrubs to planting up ‘just in bud’ pot plants in time for Christmas. Sweet peas can be planted in pots now ready for next year, and kiwis and vines can also be planted.

Alice Darroch, the Club’s own ‘Lemon Grass Lady’ spoke about the propagation of this aromatic plant which is very popular and can be used to make infusions, the centre of the bulb can be eaten in salads, and it is an essential flavouring ingredient in many Thai dishes.

The topic of Container Gardening was the subject for June Phillips, who detailed the very long history of the cultivation of plants in pots and focused on the ways in which containers can aid the modern gardener in growing flowering plants, shrubs, trees and vegetables in places in which planting might not otherwise be possible.

buffet table and their donations for raffle prizes.

The meeting will be held on December 2 at 1.45pm for a 2.00pm start, at Los Rosales Restaurant on the CV895 Lemon Tree Road, Campo de Guardamar.

By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

O inland or coastal garden in Spain should be without herbs, whether you are a resident or absentee gardener.

They have so many uses and they can be successfully planted in the garden, in containers, in window boxes or in terracotta herb barrels.

Apartment as well as villa dwellers can therefore easily grow and benefit from a collection of herbs.

The possibilities are as follows: The perennials such as lavender, rosemary, thyme, chives, bay, sage etc., (there are more than 800 varieties of sage!) are naturalised Spanish plants and are therefore fairly

easily established. Most importantly they are among the most frost and draught resistant plants.

Many annual herbs such as basil, parsley and dill can be raised from seed or purchased as small plants each spring. They are reasonably easy to care for in semi shaded positions.

Wherever planted, they can be regularly trimmed for using in salads, cooked dishes and for healthy infusions. Lamb chops or shanks coated with garlic and freshly chopped rosemary; or fresh basil with pasta and oregano, chopped over slices of freshly harvested tomatoes soaked in virgin olive oil can’t be beaten for taste. Nor can a fresh mint tea made from freshly harvested leaves.

Planted along paths, within mixed flower beds, on a rockery or in a dedicated herb garden

their leaves and flowers add perfume to the garden, which in turn attract many species of butterflies.

Planted as an interesting underlay in the areas between pine trees where the sun filters through.

Herbs can be harvested for hanging in bunches or mixing into potpourris to provide natural aromatherapy effects on the terrace or in the house.

Co-planted on the vegetable plot they can be useful attractors of beneficial insects (rosemary and lavender), in attracting pests away from crops (sage, dill, fennel and coriander), the basis of natural insecticides (garlic) and fungicides (horsetail) and the basis of valuable natural fertilisers (comfrey, borage and nettle).

If we sprain a muscle mountain walking or

What other type of garden plants can be of so much benefit for a relatively little outlay!

If you have inherited a mountainside or woodland full of naturally growing herbs you have a head start on others!

Part Four of our book ‘Your Garden in Spain’ describes and illustrates the most popular 25 herb plants. Many can be easily propagated at almost any time of the year to increase your number of plants inexpensively or as gifts for friends.

Success only requires fertile, free draining, gritty, non-clayey soils and

potting composts, with regular watering of perennials until established and daily summer watering of herbs in containers, and a regular short back and sides to stop them becoming leggy and woody.

Some herbs such as mint and the wonderful scarlet flowered pineapple sage can spread quickly, so either plant them where you are happy for them to expand or plant in large containers sunk into the ground or added to

your collection of annual and perennial herbs on the terrace.

Go native when planting SPAIN’S natural landscape and native plants vary with the country’s different climates; warmer in the south and cooler in the north, so when planting choose according to your region. Here are some native plants to Spain you may, or may not, have heard of.

Anthora: also known as healing wolfsbane and yellow monkshood, anthora (Aconitum anthora) is native to Spain, Europe and northern Asia.

The plant grows to three feet in height and thrives in partial shade to full-sun conditions and moderately moist soil.

Ornamental Onion: a member of the Alliaceae family, ornamental onion (Allium senescens) grows throughout Europe. It grows to an average two

Shopping incentive for property buyers SOME estate agents are trying to boost property sales before the end of the year by offering gift vouchers for buyers.

The Casaktua website is offering €500 worth of El Corte Ingles store vouchers for property

completions made before December 31 on selected homes they have for sale in 122 small municipalities with less than 10,000 inhabitants, across the country.

Amongst the deals up for grabs and included in

the promotion is a twobedroom home in Catral, Alicante, for €35,000, a three-bedroom apartment in Malaga for €49,000 and a three-bedroom apartment in the Barcelona area for €35,000.

Rental prices continue to decrease in October HOUSE rental prices in October decreased by 0.4 per cent, a study by real estate website Fotocasa has revealed.

In relation to October 2012, prices have dropped by 5.7 per cent.

This places the average rental price at €6.96 per square metre.

What to see Huescar Huescar has interesting monuments including the St. Maria Collegiate Church. Built at the beginning of the 16th century, since 2009, the temple is affiliated with the Santa Maria La Maggiore Basilica in Rome, being the first in this diocese to obtain Pontifical grace. Also in Huescar are the Homage Tower, San Francisco Convent, the Rodriguez Penalva Park and stately homes decorated with coats of arms.

San Clemente Reservoir The San Clemente Reservoir is located on the course of the Guardal River and the Sagra Mountain can be seen from different spots along the banks. It’s an ideal place for a family walk or a picnic.

Fuencaliente Spring The Fuencaliente Spring is a thermal spring in Huescar which also has a recreational and sports complex, poplar groves, lawn areas, sports facilities, terraces and restaurant.

Great results from the girls SATURDAY started off in the pool in Torrevieja with 195 swimmers from seven regional clubs challenged with 100m backstroke and 200m breaststroke events.

The members got off to a flying start with Victoria Pigneur and Samira Lucumbi knocking five seconds off previous personal bests in the 100m backstroke event, earning fifth and seventh positions.

Paula Garcia followed with a new best time which gives her and Vicky regional qualifying times.

Then Saturday afternoon it was off to Petrer for the turn of the oldest members of the club. Here the team competed in a variety of different races against nine other regional clubs and a total of 165 swimmers.

A good start to the event saw Louise Brassington knock more than seven seconds off her 800m freestyle time and she was followed with friends Alexandra Amat and Ruth Brassington improving on their PB’s in the 100m freestyle races. The same happened in the 100m medley with more best times from Alexandra, Ruth and Piroska Rideg.

The most outstanding results came from Piroska Rideg in the 200m backstroke (2:38:33) and Zoe Connolly in the 400m freestyle (5:17:98). Both girls had great swims.

Eurogolf play monthly medal competition FORTY FOUR players from Eurogolf took part in the November Monthly Medal on their home course of La Marquesa, with Peter Sanderson ‘stealing’ the competition.

The numbers should have been greater, but the day started off with rain and thunder and lightening which deterred some members from playing. In the end, it turned out to be a beautiful sunny day.

In the Gold Division, the first place went to Paul Manning with a 75 net score, followed by Mark Williams (76) and Jim Weston (76).

In the Silver Division, Peter Sanderson was the winner (73), Tom Hull (73) and Ian Stewart (75) came second and third.
