Police investigate shots fired following argument GUARDIA Civil are investigating an incident in which two shots were fired in La Laguna square, La Cala del Moral. The event took place when two men of unknown nationality confronted a man from La Cala who, according to sources, has a criminal record. The three men engaged in an argument that escalated quickly until the local resident reportedly took out a knife and threatened the other two. Then, one of the men who was

threatened two drew a gun out and allegedly shot in the air to intimidate the man wielding the knife. Guardia Civil and Local Police officers arrived shortly after, but the three men had already fled the scene. Police believe the men could have been arguing over money and pointed at a settling of scores as the motive. Sunday’s incident is the second shooting at La Laguna square after one that took place in 2004.

The decision followed plans to concrete the floor at the main altar, where the remains were discovered. Torrox Mayor Francisco Muñoz accused Malaga bishopric, owner of the building, of a lack of respect for the town’s historic heritage. The council said the purpose of the delay is to carry out a study of the remains, thought to be part of the 8th century mosque the church was built upon. However, the work managers say it is a fuss about nothing. They claim the remains have no archaeological value. Refurbishment work to stabilise the external walls of the temple started earlier this year with a €476,000 budget. Sources have stated the Malaga bishopric hopes the ban is lifted soon, as the Nieves shrine being used for religious services as a replacement is small.

Letters AT STAKE: The plan could affect businesses on the coast of Motril

Local call to arms MOTRIL council is looking for towns and business associations to join its fight against the Coastal Plan (Plan Litoral) drawn up by the regional government. Mayor Luisa Garcia announced the council is preparing allegations to prove the negative impact this plan would bring to the area’s businesses and economy. Garcia Chamorro, who described the plan as a

“restraint,” to the town’s development, urged the Junta to withdraw it as soon as possible. Initially planned to protect the coastline, the Plan Litoral prevents houses from being built 500 metres ashore from Motril Port to Calahonda. “This plan is putting paid to medium to long term growth,” Garcia said. “Public administrations should work together to

create jobs” she added. Garcia pointed out that the plan raises doubts over industrial, agricultural and tourism projects when the town council is working to attract investors. According to the mayor, the Coastal Plan recently passed by the national government is the path to follow towards creating new jobs, rather than the Junta’s stricter rules.

Jailed for ex-wife attack A MAN who was under a restraining order has been sentenced to prison for abusing his ex-wife on a street in Motril. The Motril criminal court sentenced the man to a year in prison for injuring his ex-wife by grabbing her by the neck. The court also forbids the accused from coming within 300 metres of the victim for two years.

The events for which he has been sentenced took place early in August when he approached the woman while she was walking along Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza avenue in Motril. He then assaulted her, grabbed her by her neck and shook her forcefully, according to the court. A police officer who was passing by at that moment helped the victim by pulling the man away from her and called

for a backup unit that arrived shortly afterwards to arrest the attacker. At the time of the arrest, the man told police that he “would have killed her” if they had not come, sources said. His wife had already been granted a two-year restraining order against him in February this year.

Despite its Christian origins, World Animal Day transcends religious divides. It is observed by animallovers of all beliefs, nationalities and backgrounds. Animal blessings are held in churches, synagogues, and by independent chaplains in parks and fields. New system is a pioneer A BOAT waste recycling system said to be a pioneer in Spain will soon operate in Motril Port. Both organic and inorganic waste produced in the course of fishing will be sorted and placed in special containers to be recycled at the port. This initiative, driven by the Agriculture, Fishing and Environment department, aims to establish a database to keep track of the average 10 kilos of waste a trawling boat collects every time it goes fishing. Additionally, the plan considers the donation of fish species with low commercial value to the local food bank. The Motril Fishermen’s Guild, made up of 17 vessels, has shown its support. “Looking after the sea is important as it is our livelihood,” said representative, Ignacio Lopez.

about purchasing in Spain. More than four out of five people said they found the advice very useful and would use it when buying their home.

They particularly liked the fact that the advice was impartial and free. Most advice given by the Foreign Office team concentrated on three key areas:

• the value of following the Foreign Office property buyers’ checklist before moving abroad (take your time, rent first, access healthcare correctly, consider the impact of

moving exchange rates on your savings, etc.) • the importance of getting good independent advice around your purchase (legal advice, following the buyers’

checklist) • the wealth of information available at www.gov.uk regarding pensions and benefits abroad and living in a specific country.

Eurozone September report points to growth CORE flat CPI data coming in at the end of August, alongside poor German retail sales figures, led to the Euro weakening at the start of September. The currency dipped to 1.3220 against the greenback, leading to the start of the decline in the Euro. On the other hand, we have seen Eurozone firms point to growth in September. Purchasing managers in the Eurozone have indicated the strongest business surroundings for two years. Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) figures now sit at 52.1. Any value above 50 is always positive as it reflects growth. This was further backed up by the fact that business activity also grew in July and August. This is a good indicator for economic growth in the third quarter. France was also seen with a PMI score of 50, which was positive considering it

had not seen a positive number in the last 19 months! In addition, both services and manufacturing sectors have led to positive data indicating that the Eurozone will not dip back into recession, after small growth was recorded between April and June. Looking at the currency itself, the end of August and start of September saw the interbank rates for EUR-GBP fall to the 0.84 mark at interbank level. This further dropped to the 0.83 mark, having not witnessed these lows for at least eight months. Despite the fact that it has weakened against the Sterling Pound, it has strengthened against other major

Having seen the Eurozone emerge from its longest recession in at least three decades, recovery will continue to be slow, with access to finance still a major problem. Policy-makers will still have plenty to do to prevent the Euro weakening further. They will need

to take advantage of the relative financial and economic calm to fast-track restricting, particularly in the banking sector. The European Central Bank (ECB) will also need to be ready to counter any tightening in market interest rates emanating from the US. All eyes were focused on the build-up to the German election

to see if this would affect the currency for the majority of the month. The week before the election, the Euro enjoyed a steady run up to the German elections, given the weakness in the US Dollar. However, the currency upheld its strength as Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Party swept most of the votes. This was the biggest win in the last 20 years, which calmed markets greatly, indicating that appropriate steps will continue to be taken towards the survival of the currency. Finally, The Federal Reserve deciding not to taper stimulus and the release of fairly decent economic data has helped the Euro. Overall, a steady end to the month for the Euro but all focus will be on the ECB decision in October to determine whether the Euro will strengthen or decline.

OPINION & COMMENT

Always read the small print before paying IF you are thinking of taking out pet insurance, read ‘Is your pet really insured?’ by David the Dogman, ( Issue 1472). He illustrates that the cover provided by some companies is quite shockingly inadequate, and stresses the importance of reading the small print BEFORE paying for the policy. I can add to the list. I took out an insurance policy for my two dogs but when I read the small print, they were not covered for anything if they were not on a lead. Every day my dogs are taken to a remote part of the campo, where there is no traffic and where they can run free. Just like us, dogs need aerobic exercise which helps to keep them slim and fit, reducing the chances of diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and other medical conditions, many of which need expensive veterinary attention. My dogs are always slim, fit and happy and they have long lives. This policy was clearly useless for my dogs and I did not renew it, because it would not have covered trauma whilst exercising off the lead. I am not against pet insurance, but often the most expensive treatments are not covered, so read the small print and think carefully. So on September 23, I went down to enrol thinking I was in plenty of time, only to be told that the classes had already started and I had missed four of them. The office girl was kind enough to tell me that it was because we had been given extra weeks of lessons, but if you don’t know when the course starts it is rather stupid. Would it not be a good idea to put it in the paper so the public has some idea of the changes? I rushed to the one and only book shop in La Cala that sells the course books, Eco, only to find they had run out and the next delivery could be four weeks away. So for all those that have the same problem, the book shop in Fuengirola opposite the Casa de Cultura has them. It seems a shame that things aren’t organised a little better. Trilby (By email)

TELEFONICA is a big, multinational company concentrating on Spanishspeaking markets. It is almost impossible to find any person in their customer service department that speaks English. I live in Marbella and have landline and ADSL internet from Telefonica. The capacity on ADSL is 1 Mbit. That means the internet is very slow and not sufficient to install a BoxTV. I do however pay full price for a service, which according to Telefonica, can be up to 10 Mbit, but that is in other places. When I ask when capacity will be increased in my home it is impossible to get any answer.

Pay up! IT is an absolute disgrace that suppliers are owed €283 million by town halls and the regional government in Murcia ( Costa Blanca South Issue 1473). NOTHER 70 or more men, women and children dead in the name of Islam. Not a peep (that I’ve heard) out of the imams and Muslim leaders condemning this latest atrocity. Children with eyes gouged out, castrated men hung up to die on hooks, dismembered body parts used on police as weapons, no doubt to the accompanying chants of Allahu Akbar, and still more victims buried in the rubble of this sickening attack in Nairobi. How much more will it take to convince the pussyfooting PC and ostrich imitators to finally admit that radical elements of Islam mean it is no longer a case of ‘it could happen’ in the UK, but a clear-cut case of ‘when’. I wonder which side the so-called moderates will take then? I guarantee that the most any of them will do is lock themselves away until it’s all over. Don’t expect to see any of them standing up and taking the side of the infidels. When are the authorities going to get a grip? What they should now be doing is using all their high-tech knowledge and information sources to dig out all the caches

Another thing I truly fail to understand is how the two lowlifes who hacked young soldier Lee Rigby to death on the streets of London live on video and then appeared with his blood dripping from their hands to inform the world they had done this foul deed in the name of Islam, have been allowed to plead not guilty? Is it time to let a woman take the reins of power in Spain? H

They can’t do any worse than the people running the UK government, for example.” Wendy White, retired, from San Luis, (Alicante) believes there are already a lot of women in government which can be a good thing: “Men can be so chauvinistic and Angela seems to

East of Eden Set in California's Salinas Valley, this powerful, and often brutal, epic tells the story of the rivalry between two brothers challenging for the affections of their farmer father. The story follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Big bold brows

Natural best for autumn

THE natural look is back! The beauty forecast for autumn at London Fashion Week is clear. Flawless skin, very little eye make-up and stand-out lips. So what’s the best way to get skin looking at its best for the cooler months? • Keep skin clean – a daily routine will ensure oils that build up on the surface of the skin, allowing pores to clog and spots to form, are removed. Try washing the face with soap after removing any make-up, then steaming over a bowl of hot water to allow pores to open. Use exfoliating cream, rinse with warm water to remove and then with cold water to close pores. • Eat healthily – Stay away from too many foods like milk, chocolate and sweets, and stick to green vegetables, which include inflammation-fighting nutrients, wholegrain items like quinoa for their antioxidant qualities and fish for their omega 3 qualities.

ON TREND: Full, defined eyebrows.

BIGGER, fuller, bolder brows are the ‘it’ trend for this autumn, according to many on beauty forums. “Eyebrows are a major focal point; like that statement accessory or perfect red lips, a freshly groomed set of eyebrows completes your look,” said totalbeauty.com. Big brows have been spotted on the London and New York Fashion Week runways, so to get the

Air fresheners can be just as toxic as tobacco smoke SOME household air-fresheners are more toxic than tobacco. According to the Consumer and User Organisation (OCU) in Spain, some household air fresheners which need heat, such as oils, incense and perfumed candles, worsen the quality of the air as they have excessive levels of toxic, allergenic and contaminating substances. OCU has examined 20 air fresheners to determine the substances they emit into the air. The products which were analysed are associated with a relaxing and healthy atmosphere, but some make the air as toxic as a room full of smokers with lit

cigarettes, causing toxicity and risks to the health. The only products which have been approved are candles, as oils and incense have too many small particles which can be breathed in and contain allergenic substances and compounds such as benzene and formaldehyde. OCU recommends not using them, as they neither clear the air nor get rid of bad smells, and especially not using them in the presence of children, pregnant women or people with allergies or asthma. Use of candles should also be kept to a minimum. The best way to improve air quality is by ventilating the room.

designer look follow these simple steps: Grooming – Use a brow brush and comb upwards and outwards to outline the natural shape of your eyebrows. Trim any long straying hairs with scissors and only pluck strays from beneath the brow line. Definition – Use an eyebrow pencil or powder set to extend the brow and

fill in any gaps lacking hair. Use a darker colour for a bolder brow, starting from the inner parts and extending using sweeping motions upwards and outwards. Highlight – Use a highlighting pencil underneath the eyebrow to add the finishing touch and make your bold brows really stand out.

PISCES (February 20 - March 20) Pat yourself on the back for all of your efforts of recent weeks. Looking back just a few months, would you have thought so much progress could be made? Because of your efforts, home life is enhanced and you are more appreciated.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) When you are at home this week I would like you to consider how you view your surroundings. This is a good week to make changes and have discussions about future directions.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Rarely has your mind been as sharp as it is at the moment. There have been some awkward and downright bad periods in the recent past, but this week everything falls into place.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) For all of the things that you want to do, there are three others that you wish to do. Maybe they are waiting for their own time to come. GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) When it isnʼt possible to change something, often it is just as effective to rearrange it. That is the solution which comes to you this week. Instead of being frustrated at a delay, try changing the conditions or times. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) When we have longstanding friendships, these are often taken for granted and yet often we could make so much more of them.

Sudoku Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 3X3 box contains the digits 1-9. There’s no maths involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

LEO (July 24 - August 23) Consider what is the most important thing to you at the moment? Is it wealth or social position? Your work, or how it may be possible to afford that new conservatory are minor considerations compared with your greatest asset which is your health.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

VIRGO (August 24 September 23) As the saying goes, ʻno one ever said it would be easyʼ. In the past few months you have found this to be true. Hard work is not alien to you, but there is a point where you want to shout ʻenoughʼ.

Changes to UK Satellite TV

By Paul Glennie of UK TV Router

T

HERE is currently a huge amount of rumour and scaremongering going on about the possible loss of reception of our favourite UK TV stations via satellite, so I would like to try and give a concise explanation of what is going on. Tip number one is, don’t listen to the pub experts! I will start with an explanation of what has happened so far and then take a look at the changes and timing of the future events: So far: Early in 2012, SES Astra were forced to replace the Astra 2D satellite which then carried

most of the Freesat channels (BBC, ITV, etc). This satellite was not due for replacement for at least another year so its appointed replacement satellite was still under construction. They therefore moved Astra 1N as a temporary replacement to carry on giving service to Freesat and placed the channels on the pan-European beam which resulted in these channels becoming available on a smallish dish in most of Europe. In the second half of 2012, they launched the Astra 2F satellite which at that point was thought to be the full replacement for 1N, but as things turned out only a few channels moved and the majority stayed on 1N. Of the

channels which did move, Channel 5 was probably the most important and we can use Channel 5 as a guide to what may happen in the future. Astra 2E is the next satellite due to launch, it should have gone up in July but the launch was delayed by the explosion of the Proton rocket on the preceding launch from the launch site at Baikonur Cosmodrome. The best estimate I can find at present is for a launch date of around now. If they do manage to launch then this would be followed by a six to 10 week testing period before the channel migration process starts, so the earliest we should see any change would then be November of this year.

What’s the outcome going to be? There are a few suppositions here and as always we can never be certain of the outcome until the new satellite is actually broadcasting. But given that the satellite is built by the same manufacturer, is due to broadcast from the same location at 28.2º and shows identical footprint maps as the 2F satellite which went up last year, it would be reasonable to assume that the coverage will be similar. Effectively this would mean that if you live in an area where you can still receive Channel 5 you should still get the rest of the Freesat channels after the changeover, although

COST-EFFECTIVE: UKTVrouter.com you may need to make some changes depending on the size of your dish. What can we do if we do lose the signal? All is not lost. If you have ADSL with a reasonable speed you can watch via the internet. There will be various ways to achieve this but one of the best and most cost effective is UKTVrouter.com which is one of the easiest ways EVER to watch British TV from abroad. The UK TV router gives you a new wireless network in your home with a UK IP

address which then allows you to connect with multiple devices (PC, Laptop, iPad, etc) and simultaneously watch either live or catch-up British TV. This is not just in case you lose your satellite signal it’s just a great thing to have in your home. Watch What you Want Where you Want When you Want (See our advert on Page 34). How to plant and grow fruit in your Spanish garden By Dick Handscombe WHEN buying new fruit trees, bushes or plants for

your garden or wondering why some of the existing ones aren’t doing too well, recognise that success

factors include the following: Location Choose the types of fruit that are best

grown in your area. What will grow down by the sea may struggle on a frosty inland valley.

Garden microclimate If you want to grow subtropical/tropical fruit, ensure that you have developed warm sheltered places in the garden for each season of the year. Plant what family likes to eat Think about types and how much you can eat or use for cooking. Right choice Type is especially important with oranges and mandarins where there are early, mid season and late varieties. Plant selection Ensure they are healthy with good rootballs, especially if you purchase maiden one-year trees. Label information Look out for labels that tell you something. Often labels just say ‘orange’ but don’t mention the variety. Siting Fruit trees and plants can be grown in a wide variety

of situations ranging from containers on terraces to a dedicated orchard. Soil preparation Improve a metre-wide and 50-centimetre-deep area of soil before you plant a fruit tree in the centre of it. This will help ensure the roots will grow outward, rather than be constrained within a small hole in solid clay! Planting Ensure that the graft is above soil level and that trees are supported by sturdy posts. Don’t crowd Plant fruit trees five metres apart, unless growing as a hedge. The roots of a large tree next door might spread into your property and compete with the roots of a young tree against your fence. ©Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com October 2013

Alfa Romeo returns to lightweight coupes

UPDATED: This special model highlights the sporty side of the original model.

New BMW with sporty design BMW Motorrad has unveiled the BMW R 1200 R ‘DarkWhite’ special model motorbike, an update of the R 1200 R launched in 2010. In the R 1200 R ‘DarkWhite’ special model, BMW highlights the sporty side of the original model, something that has always typified BMW roadsters with boxer engines. The special model underlines a contrast between the bodywork with its light white paintwork and the jet black of the drivetrain and wheels. With the frame in an asphalt grey, swingarm,

rear axle housing and triangular wishbone in matt black and the black anodised fork tubes lend the roadster an exclusive high-tech feel, the manufacturer claims. The sports windshield reduces the strain on the rider in the area of the helmet and upper body. The standard sports seat provides perfect contact with the motorcycle. In addition, the R 1200 R ‘DarkWhite’ special model can be individually enhanced with special accessories and optional extras from the extensive BMW Motorrad range.

DESIGNED, engineered and built as a pure driving machine, the new Alfa Romeo 4C marks the brand’s return to the world of lightweight sports coupes. Built at the Maserati plant in Modena, the mid-engined Alfa Romeo 4C employs the latest technologies of

Romeo 4C’s compact shape accentuates its agility. Power comes from a new fourcylinder turbo engine which, thanks to its aluminium block, is 22 kilos lighter than the engine that powers the Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV. Turbo-charged and with direct injection, this new 1750 turbo petrol unit sets new torque and specific power records for this size of engine, at over 200NM and 137hp-per-litre respectively. Accelerating from 0 to 62 mph takes just 4.5 seconds in the new Alfa Romeo 4C, on sale from €53,990 with deliveries expected early 2014. Due to its lightweight and advanced engine and transmission technologies, its official combinedcycle fuel economy figure is 6.8 litres/100km, its CO2 emissions are just 157g/km. The exhaust has been tuned to emit a full, rich sound and particular attention paid to the seat design so the movement and reactions of the car can be ‘felt’ properly. The steering, unassisted, is progressive, direct and engineered to convey as much feel as possible. customers. “We are becoming the younger, trendsetting brand, more relevant and more exciting,” said Johan de Nysschen, President of Infiniti Motor Company Ltd.
