Memorable Meetings Meetings may be long or short, productive, funny, surprising and many other things. They always create some emotion. We asked some of our designers to tell us about meetings that have left them with a strong memory.

Nelson Ruiz-Acal, Cate & Nelson The welcome meeting on my first day at the design school in Madrid, the Istituto Europeo di Design, became a key occasion in my life. It was the first day of my career as a designer and, very importantly, the day I met my partner, Cate. She was 15 minutes late as she had got lost in her new city. She went on to become my partner in my personal and professional life.

Luca Nichetto I was travelling to Stockholm after one of my first meetings with Offecct in their home town of Tibro. I decided to call a relatively new acquaintance, Eero Koivisto, an architect based in Stockholm. I suggested meeting over a coffee. Instead, he invited me for dinner at his home and I met his four-year old son. His openness, curiosity and a wonderful plate of pasta made me feel like I was by the Mediterranean rather than meeting a Finnish architect in Stockholm. I feel lucky to meet so many inspiring people through my work.

Louise Hederström I met Signe Persson-Melin in Malmö while making a film. She is a legendary Swedish designer who works mainly with ceramics and glass. She is 87 years old now and I can remember her designs from back in my childhood. My mum made pickled herring and always used a jar designed by her. I was so nervous about meeting her, but she was warm and as sharp as ever.

Claesson Koivisto Rune A relaxed meeting in a chic setting marked the start of a project to design a cultural centre in Kyoto, Japan. Our first meeting with the client was ten years ago at the café at 10 Corso Como in Milan. It was truly memorable because it was the start of a long, productive and innovative collaboration. The design was ground-breaking as it was the first to use pixelated hole patterns.

Michael Sodeau You do not always need words for a great meeting. I was working on a project with a Japanese company to develop a new brand of stationery. The language barrier was huge, but by sketching our thoughts we were able to communicate everything we needed. Those sketches conveyed our ideas on the changing role of stationery in a technological world and were even enough for us to conclude the business deal.

We had just started our studio when I had a meeting with a big potential client. I had prepared well but was nervous. As soon as I saw his office my mood changed. There were shelves full of books and inspirational objects around the room in no apparent order. The discussion flowed easily and he really made time for me. I try to keep that spirit of openness, creativity and respect in my own meetings now.

In late 2006 I got an unusual invite. The future King and Queen of the Netherlands, Prince Willem Alexander and Princess Màxima were holding an informal dinner for people working in creative fields. Things started badly after our babysitter arrived late and I realised I needed my passport for security. Luckily I got in. The dinner was thoroughly enjoyable and relaxed. A few days later, Princess Màxima announced she was pregnant, prompting my eight year-old son to say “daddy went to Màxima and now she is pregnant”.

THE REAL MADE IN SWEDEN

PART 1: LEATHER Made in Sweden is not just a strapline for us. It is a whole philosophy about the way we work. Sustainability goes deeper than words on a piece of paper. We believe that we all have a responsibility to protect our planet. 85% of the suppliers we work with are based within 200 kilometres of our base in the town of Tibro. We want to develop long-standing, mutually beneficial partnerships. Our Made in Sweden programme demonstrates this belief. We find partners in our home country who will collaborate with us and who can achieve our exacting quality standards. As example take Elmo Sweden, a company founded in 1931 in the south-west town of Svenljunga. Elmo has built up years of deep expertise in the
