NAVIGATING IS EASY!

WHERE TO STOP?

LOCKS

During your cruise, you’re free to stop wherever you - How do I go through a lock? Going through locks is all part of the fun and once you’ve been like…being careful not to disrupt the countryside through your first one you’ll see how easy they and wildlife (or encroach on private property!) simare. Follow a few basic guidelines: always take ply moor up and step ashore. it slowly and carefully and remain patient if there Day-by-day you’ll discover new surroundings and are other boats waiting. Passage through locks and ever-changing scenery and the great outdoors. bridges is free. If on the other hand you prefer the hustle and bustle of the towns and villages you pass on route - Are they automatic? Most locks are automatic and operated by a lock keeper who may ask then take advantage of the purpose-built ports and Warning: the minimum age to take the helm of a mooring sites. In general, lock-keepers do not work on Bank Holidays (dates vary according to region WARNING: the information provided in this document is not contractual. - please contact us for more information). Characteristics may vary depending on the boats and the areas where you’ll navigate. Our boats are easy to operate with either just one inside steering position or a second rooftop position to navigate under the sun with a panoramic view. You will discover simple controls that are easy to use: the wheel, a gear lever and a few instruments on the dashboard. Don’t worry if you’ve never been on a boat before - we’ll show you everything you need to know before you set off. You’ll be taken out on the water and given a hands on demonstration of everything from how to go through locks to tying up at the water’s edge.

Don’t forget our Nicols® vouchers!

Looking for a great gift idea? Treat family or friends to a self drive boating break on one of our Nicols® boats. No previous boating experience needed! Contact us for more information.

CANAL OR RIVER? Most of the waterways in our brochure are generally wide and non-tidal making them easy to navigate. Depending on your chosen departure base you may cruise on both canals and rivers. Rivers, where natural, are more susceptible to the possibility of flooding compared to the manmade canals - especially in Spring and Autumn. Some navigation restrictions may occur as a result of this flooding and for your own safety we may change your departure base or restrict cruising to the canal sections only, rather than cancelling your cruise completely. Please make enquiries about the state of the waterways before leaving on your cruise.

Let’s take care of the environment together! We take our responsibility for caring for the environment very seriously and are continuously striving to implement best practice procedures. To help you do your bit, on the day of departure Nicols® will provide you with a welcome kit which includes some biodegradable cleaning products for use on your holiday. Rubbish bags should be left in the areas provided. Please abide by the strict speed limits to reduce bankside erosion and protect the wildlife that live there and when mooring, be careful not to damage the plants around you. Our aim is to ensure that our boats and everyone who uses them have a minimal impact on the environment to protect our waterways so many more people can enjoy them for years to come. 5

Do something different every day...

HISTORY & CULTURE

GASTRONOMY

BICYCLES

The canals and rivers you explore will provide some exceptional views, providing a different perspective on places as well as seeing sights often unseen from on land. As you cruise through the towns and villages take time to visit the museums, castles, classified sites… perfect for photographers!

Discovering a region also involves enjoying the pleasures of the table! Famous restaurants, local markets, wines and grape varieties, tasting caves... the list goes on!

Bikes are available to hire from all of our bases and provide extra flexibility for exploring the area where you’ve moored, little villages, places of interest or simply for going to buy your daily bread.

Each destination offers gastronomic treasures: see your waterways guide for details or check with the helpful base staff before you head off.

Helmets are recommended for children: please remember to bring your equipment.

WARNING: the information provided in this document is not contractual. Characteristics may vary depending on the boats and the areas where you’ll navigate.

RELAXATION A boating holiday isn’t just all about the many different activities you can enjoy. After swimming, fishing, walking, cycling and exploring the many towns and villages you pass… you should take some time to enjoy the slower pace of life that a boating holiday provides. Put your feet up and relax in the comfort of your boat – either in the spacious rooms or out on the sun decks and terraces. Moor up and enjoy a lazy lunch in the shade with nothing but the noise of birdsong and gently lapping water.

ANIMALS

SWIMMING A boating holiday provides plenty of opportunities to get your swimming costume on - a swim in the river, at the beach or along stretches of water you’ll find en route. Some towns and villages will also have swimming pools you can use.

FISHING

Your boat is a great vantage point for fishing from. You can fish in the canals and rivers providing you hold a fishing licence. These can be purchased from local fishing tackle shops or from certain newsagents (approximately 30 euros and valid for Also why not try our ‘on-board splash pool’ - exclu- 15 days). sive to Nicols® and great for children (and adults!). Find out more on page 35.

Pets are welcome onboard. A supplement of 35 euros will be requested when you depart the base. Don’t forget to bring their belongings (feeding bowl, bedding/blankets etc) and when travelling ensure that they remain safe and cannot cause any harm or damage.

WATERWAYS GUIDES A comprehensive guide is vital for planning your cruise. It provides detailed information of the waterways on which you will navigate highlighting useful information such as the location of locks, quays, water fill-up points etc in addition to tourist information such as places to visit and their opening hours, market days, good restaurants etc. We recommend you order your waterways guide at the same time as booking so that you receive it with the other cruise documentation you will be sent. This means you will have plenty of time to plan your journey in advance.

Charente,

green countryside, clear waters and fields of sunflowers Charente From Sireuil : Large and winding, the river Charente quoted by François the 1st as «the most beautiful stream in the Kingdom», runs through the ancient counties of “Langoumois” and “La Saintonge”. For 171 km, from Angoulême to the Ocean, the Charente is regulated by 21 locks. The ancient vineyards cover the surrounding hills. Many cellars and distilleries will invite you to taste the famous Cognac or delicious Pineau. Along your cruise, you will find many villages and towns that are testimonies to a rich past such as Angoulême, Fleurac, Saint-Simeux, Châteauneuf, Saint-Simon, Bassac, Jarnac, Saint-Brice, Cognac, Saintes, Saint-Savinien, and Rochefort. In the Charente area, the gastronomy based on seafood is waiting for you along the river with many of its restaurants preparing local specialities («mouclade», oysters …). Fishermen will not be forgotten and will find plenty of brown trout, carp, pike, perche, and eels …

Enjoy a boating holiday on one of France’s most beautiful rivers. Take in green countryside, crystal clear waters and fields of sunflowers whilst you cruise. The best bists : Locks operated by yourself so no restrictions on travel time ; Cognac and Pineau vineyards and tasting! Peaceful countryside and ancient roman sites

Choose your boat!

The key to a successful boating holiday is in choosing the best boat for you and your crew – from the size of the boat, its facilities and layout of cabins and internal equipment, to the security for accommodating children… The information below will help you make your selection of boat. ◆

Choose your range

Octo®

• The Riviera range is ideal for first time cruisers due to their easy manoeuvrability. Comfortable cabins and a saloon with a sliding roof for dining in the sun are on all models > see pages 44/45 • For a family cruise, the Sedan range is ideal: its rear terrace is on the same level as the living room/ kitchen and offers an open space unequalled within the market. No stairs mean easy movement between the inside and the outside of the boat. > see pages 40 to 43 • Crews with 2, 3 or 4 couples will appreciate the Confort range, where every cabin has its own bathroom for extra privacy and comfort. > see pages 38/39 • Our newest Estivale range is without doubt the smartest way to travel on the waterways and offers the highest levels of space and comfort. Enjoy easy access via both back gates and side gates. > see pages 36/37

Choose your boat

Read our detailed boat descriptions and boat layout diagrams to ensure that there is going to be enough space for your party to enjoy a comfortable cruise together. If you do not wish to use the convertible saloon as an extra bedroom please choose a model which offers enough beds in cabins for everybody.

4+2

Example: a boat described as being a 4+2 is a boat which offers 4 beds in cabins plus 2 extra bed spaces in the converted saloon area.

«Home-from-home» comfort

Our boats have a vast living room with a 360° panoramic view. The kitchen equipped «as at home» offers you: 220l fridge with a freezer compartment *, ring-hob, oven / grill according to model *, wide work plan and numerous arrangements. The kitchenware is supplied as well as the bedding (sheets, duvets, pillows), terraces are equipped with garden furniture with sun awning or parasol according to model… *fridge 220l: except Riviera range, N800 and Primo®. Oven: except N800.

Security first

To make moving from one end of the boat to the other safe and easy all our walkways are covered with an antislipping surface, have a hand rail and a double railing* at a height of 60cm (safety criteria imposed by the legislation for boats made in France). The rear terrace on the Sedan and Estivale ranges are on the same level as the living room meaning there are no stairs to negotiate going either in or out of the boat. The front terrace of the Confort range can be reached via a gangway 1 metre high moulded into the hull deck for the maximum safety. All these criteria mean that Nicols® boats are one of the safest on the market, particularly when it comes to accommodating crews with children and/or people with reduced mobility. *except N800 and Primo®

The swimming pool: a NICOLS® exclusive

The on-board pool! Discover the pleasures of on-board bathing by adding one of our fantastic heated splash pools – simply tow it along with your boat. Suitable for the Estivale, Confort and Sedan (except N800 and Primo®) ranges. N.B.: For the Octo®, Sixto®, N1300/ N1310, N1350 and VIP a pleasure boat licence is necessary due to the total length of the boat plus pool. Technical description: Dimensions : 2,55 m x 3,10 m. Capacity: 700 litres, suitable for 3 people. Terrace with double safety rails. Converts into a larger terrace with two sliding covers. Available in: Alsace, Aquitaine, Brittany, Charente, Franche-Comté, Midi.

Estivale

A new range of «Estivale» boats offering a perfect compromise between the existing Sedan and Confort series. The large aft ter-

Sun awning sliding

race is on the same deck level as the lounge area (which is part of the success of the Sedan series). In addition to the stern gates two extra side gates facilitate access to the terrace from either side of the boat, facilities which will be most appreciated when mooring. The galley area conserves a high standard of equipment, whilst the cabins and shower rooms are spacious and comfortable. Outdoor life has not been left aside, a stairway moulded into the

Fixed stairway to the flying bridge

hull enables access to the flying bridge, and the bridge controls fold away for maximum comfort. The forward bow terrace, greatly appreciated on the Confort range, has again been retained for outdoor snacks or lunches. Finally the height of refinement, the aft terrace has a sun awning, a saloon table with chairs, a shower and bathing ladder for those tempted

by a swim ! Without doubt the range. Estivale will charm you for your next cruise along the waterways...

The making of our Nicols® boats

A little background ®

Nicols boat construction started in 1986 within a French industrial group specialising in the transformation of plastic materials. In 1990 the first Nicols® base opened in Dole in Franche-Comté. The following year a reservation centre opened to take bookings for holidaymakers. 22 years later and Nicols® continue to manage the complete process: boat construction/rentals/ administrating the bases. Over the years, generations of boats have been created: the Marinas, then Riviera, the Sedans have been developed, easily recognisable with their «sea yacht» silhouette and their terrace - unrivalled in the market; then the Confort range appreciated by couples, and finally the new Estivale generation... In total, there are 5 ranges, 22 boat models and more than 550 craft that have come from the Nicols® boatyard.

Removal from the mould

Stratification

The key points of construction When the plans are finished, we begin the making of the «first model»: made of wood, it is from this model that the moulds are created to make all the boats. Each mould must have a perfect surface, like a mirror, so that the stratification (projection of polyester fibres) is without a flaw. Once the two principal pieces are

The design process At first, everything starts with a list of ideas: inspired from customer comments and 1st users of Nicols® boats; we use all suggestions that can allow us to improve the comfort onboard our boats to meet and exceed the expectations of our customers. Once agreed we design the boat to meet the demands of our clients: living area, sleeping quarters, attractive lines, comfort of the interior furnishings...

made (hull and deck) comes the unmoulding stage ... it is already a new born! Then all the teams take over: carpenters to make the partitions and interior furniture, welders for the railings and ladders, electricians, mechanics, plumbers, for the interior equipment and wiring, etc... until the boat is finally ready to leave the shipyard for its new home!

Fittings designed for your comfort and security Onboard a Nicols® boat, everything is thought out for your comfort. Most of our models are fitted with a large, light and airy living area, with a 360° panoramic view; a very practical fitted kitchen with a 200 litre fridge and a freezer compartment, a stove and mini oven, sometimes even a microwave (on the VIP)! With the exception of the Riviera range (our 1st models) all the boats feature sliding French windows with access onto the terrace for meals in the sun; the roof solarium is accessible and there is often a second piloting position (the fly-bridge) for the captain’s benefit! For safety, Nicols® has equipped all boats with a double railing and a hand rail which permits your movements to the front of the boat with maximum security and comfort for adults and children (under your supervision). All our models built in our shipyard since 1998, have a water level bathing ladder: practical for climbing onto the boat, after a dip, voluntary or accidental!

Our boats in numbers The Nicols® Yacht shipyard has made more than 550 boats, developed in 5 ranges and 22 models, from 7.50m to 13.50m. These models are for rental in France, Germany and Portugal. Each year more than 30,000 passengers navigate onboard our Nicols® river boats...

Own your very own Nicols® boat... ...and enjoy lazy days on the water all year round! A spacious living area, a fitted kitchen, cabins and bathrooms, a terrace...your Nicols® boat is a comfortable as a floating home! Such is the case for some of our clients who have enjoyed it so much, that they have chosen to buy a Nicols® river boat as their second home. Whether new or second hand there is the possibility to have interior fittings altered or made to measure as you wish. The Nicols® boat enthusiasts are not only holidaymakers but also happy boat owners!
