THE FIREBIRD April 13–14, 2019

Eugene Ballet celebrates our 40th anniversary with a fabulous season of dance infused with theater, passion, and joy, including two full length ballets inspired by Shakespeare’s plays. In October we present a very contemporary Hamlet set to the music of Philip Glass by Austin Ballet’s Artistic Director Stephen Mills. In February we stage my more traditional ballet Romeo & Juliet, the story of star-crossed lovers set to Prokofiev’s score with romance, intrigue, drama, spectacular sword fighting, and stunning visual images creating landscapes of great beauty. The Nutcracker returns in December for four shows with Orchestra Next, the Cantabile Collective youth choir, and hundreds of young student dancers joining Eugene Ballet on stage at this beloved annual holiday tradition for all ages. At the Hult Center for the Performing Arts’ opening weekend 36 years ago, Eugene Ballet presented three performances of The Firebird choreographed by myself. For this very special anniversary season, Stravinsky’s The Firebird returns in an all new production choreographed by Suzanne Haag. Her futuristic retelling of the classic tale with contemporary movement captures a world in need of being reborn from the ashes. The evening opens with Italian Suite, Gerald Arpino’s supremely romantic ballet, and marks the 10th anniversary of the choreographer’s passing. In collaboration with Hult Presents, Eugene Ballet’s special event in October brings Complexions Contemporary Ballet to the Hult Center for one evening only of their incomparable tribute to the music of David Bowie. We can’t wait to see Star Dust, and the virtuosity of their dancers. As always, Eugene Ballet would not be the company it is without our national and international caliber dancers who work, play, and dream dance, and delight us all with their beauty, grace, strength, and agility. Join us, Eugene’s own ballet company and its greatest cultural export, for a fantastic 40th anniversary season of professional dance.

Toni Pimble, Artistic Director

HAMLET October 6–7, 2018 Hult Center

The West Coast Premiere of Stephen Mills’ contemporary ballet Hamlet is based on the classic Shakespearean story of a young man and his incredible family drama. Featuring modern sets, costumes inspired by designer Giorgio Armani, and an emotionally driving score by American composer Philip Glass, Hamlet is sure to bring a new vision of this classic tragedy to audiences.

“Stripped of words, danced by a high-energy cast and jet-fueled by the music of Glass, the play becomes something of a staged action movie.” — Gary Tischler, The Georgetowner

ROMEO & JULIET February 9–10, 2019 Hult Center February is the month for romance, passion and ballet. Toni Pimble’s classical ballet Romeo & Juliet fully embraces Shakespeare’s tale of youthful romance and the family forces that lead to their demise. Experience the moments of pure joy and heartache as Prokofiev’s lush score is brought to life by Orchestra Next through this perfect ballet.

THE FIREBIRD April 13–14, 2019 Hult Center When the Hult Center opened in 1982, the first ballet performed on its stage was Eugene Ballet’s The Firebird. In homage to that occasion and in celebration of Eugene Ballet’s 40 years of creating incredible dance, Suzanne Haag presents an all new vision of this iconic ballet. Witness life being raised from the ashes with the power of Stravinsky’s score in this futuristic retelling of the classic fairytale. The April program opens with Gerald Arpino’s Italian Suite. Selected by the Gerald Arpino Foundation, Eugene Ballet is honored to celebrate the lives of both Gerald Arpino and Robert Joffrey with a work that “...is supremely romantic, filled with virtuoso bits. Gorgeous women in pink swoop into the arms of their cavaliers....” — Richard Christiansen, Chicago Tribune.

THE NUTCRACKER December 21–23, 2018 Hult Center

Celebrate your holiday season with a marvelous journey to Eugene Ballet’s The Nutcracker. There’s a joyful magic at every performance as hundreds of aspiring dancers join the Company on stage, while the Sugar Plum Fairy transports audience members of every age to the Snow Kingdom and the Land of the Sweets. You’ll cheer and boo at the battle with the not-so-scary Mouse King and his Pirate Henchmice, as Clara and The Nutcracker win the day.
