W hen was t he last t ime someone went out of t heir way to be k ind to you? Better yet, when wa s t he la st t ime you did somet hing k ind wit hout expect ing anyt hing in return?
Chances are, it’s probably somet hing you rarely exper ience
You can find countless definit ions on r andom act s of k indness, but t his is one that I feel fits best:
A r andom act of k indness is a non-premedit ated, inconsistent ac t ion designed to of fer k indness towards t he out side world, wit hout expec ting anyt hing in return.
I never k new what t his meant unt il two years ago. It was a Monday mor ning and rout inely I go to get my mor ning Joe at St arbuck s.
A s I pulled up to pay for my coffee and egg sandw ich, the woman at t he w indow gave me my order and said with a smile, “No charge today, sir, t he car in front of you paid for your stuff!”
I exclaimed, “No way, why would they do that?” She smiled and said, “It’s called a random act of kindness.” Well, I can’t begin to tell you how good that made me feel. I saved $13.45 (LOL)! In all ser iousness, it set my mood for t he ent ire day. That somewhat selfless and thoughtful act made me begin to think.
I’ve always considered myself to be polite to ot hers, but to me, t his act of doing somet hing out of left field was next level. So, I decided to begin doing it myself. Just about every week or so, as I roll through St arbuck s, I pay it forward. If it made me feel that good, why not do the same for ot hers?
A s human being s, we need to be k inder, more considerate and do more t hings for ot hers, even if it’s to a stranger. Just as it makes you feel good to be t he recipient of someone’s k indness towards you, it feels equally grat if ying to do t he same for ot hers.
If we were all more t houghtf ul, k inder and considerate of ot hers, t here would be a lot less hate in t his world. I come from t he age of t he Lovin’ Era. You know, peace and love from the 60s. People were cooler and not so uptight. T hose were good t imes.
Here are my top ten Acts of K indness you can tr y t he next t ime you are out and about.
1. If t he person behind you on line at the super market only ha s a hand f ull of items, let t hem go ahead of you.
2. Pay for the person’s order on line at St arbucks that is directly behind you.
3. Open a door for someone ever y chance you get.
4. A simple “Good mor ning ” to 3 st rangers in your day.
5. Leave a dollar or two in t he t ip jar at your local deli counter.
6. Say “T hank you” far more t han you have been.
7. Send out a posit ive text message to a loved one, fr iend, coworker or customer.
8. Go out of your way to tell t he manager at a rest aurant how great of a job your ser ver did.
9. If you got great ser vice, leave a generous tip with a hand-wr it ten note.
10. Smile more to ever y person you come in cont act with.
I’ve lear ned throughout my life that what you put out is what you get back. St ar t giv ing more of yourself wit hout expect ing anyt hing in retur n. Do it often enough and you w ill soon find yourself liv ing in t he abundance of all that life has to offer.

Valentine’s Day! What to Wear for
There are a lot of origins for Valentine’s Day, starting with the martyrdom of a saint and ending with Esther A. Howland and her 1840s greeting cards. Today, Valentine’s Day is an annual excuse to spend the evening showering love and affection on someone special. Part of the festivities usually involves going out, painting the town red so to speak. This year, don’t waste time ripping your hair out trying to find the perfect outfit. Use this guide to cut down on trying on this and that, so that you have more time on your date.
All the basics of dressing up for Valentine’s Day are as follows: wear red or pink, or, if you’re without, black. Flowers and hearts are the king of patterns. Air on the side of flirty, however that may look when translated to your personal style.
Never underestimate the power of a cute sweater. If you don’t want to buy a new outfit, turn to your trusty sweater, the one that always falls just right and is the most flattering shade against your skin. Depending on where you’re going or what you’re doing, pair this with a mini skirt and tights or a pair of trousers. Add on the finishing touches with your accessories and you’re set! Temperatures have been brutal lately and you don’t have to shiver to look your best.
If you find yourself going on a classic dinner date this Valentine’s Day, a sleek-cut dress is the way to go. A simple black dress has been the date night staple since forever, but for Valentine’s, you might want to jazz up the look. Mesh overlays have seen more love recently, so if you’re interested in trying out a subtle pattern, this is the perfect entry-way. A dress with a smattering of large, red flowers or sequins woven into the mesh will be eye-catching, but elegant. Likewise, longer hemlines have been in vogue lately. Pair your dress with heels rather than boots for a more symmetrical look.
Ruffles have seen a recent come-back, especially with evening wear. A monochromatic look can have a lot of dimension with the help of ruffles. Some dresses feature ruffles only at the bust, while others make patterns with strategically placed stripes of ruffle.
If you’re spending this Valentine’s Day with a longtime partner, there are little things you can incorporate into your outfit to make them feel seen and appreciated. Wearing the jewelry they’ve gotten you, or a dress they’ve complimented previously is a way to make the evening more intimate and romantic.
Valentine’s Day is all about love. Whether you’re spending it with a partner or a dear friend, it’s a great excuse to dress up and go out. Wear what makes you feel best, and dazzle whoever sees you!

CHOOSE HEALTH CHOOSE LOVE
The best gift that you can give to yourself is self-care. are loving to yourself, you can be your best self and you can give back to others. Investing in yourself and your health is actually self-less, not selfish.
One of the best ways to show up for yourself is with healthy choices. Ask yourself, ‘What does health mean for me?’ I know that people are confused more than ever trying to understand what healthy means. And believe it or not, eating healthy or being healthy is subjective. As you age, your wellness needs change too.
With all of this confusion about being healthy - where can we start? A good place to start is to tune in with what feels good for you. It’s the kind of feeling that embodies wholesome goodness. The kind of good that in years to come, you know you’ve invested in your health. It is the opposite of immediate gratification so beware of that and understand the difference.
What makes this confusing is the spectacular way our society markets holidays in an unhealthy way. Here we are facing another holiday that should be celebrating pure love yet the materialistic component is shoved in our faces causing more stress. The sugar chocolate companies make a fortune on their heart-shaped boxes filled with cancer and diabetes causing ingredients. Gas, bloating and chronic illness is not romantic. Buying toxins for loved ones is not what you want to do. What gets us off course is the way that we have been duped into believing that it is all about the ‘things’ that we buy for loved ones that shows how much we love them. What’s worse is that these chemical treats and stress about affording lavish gifts are damaging not loving.
Healthy is the new sexy. Getting to understand what your body needs may require professional evaluation. Maybe you feel sluggish and fatigued, but you still don’t know why after trying everything possible. Perhaps it’s gut health, thyroid functioning, or chronic inflammation. You may be able to aid your healing by eliminating dairy, maybe taking sugar out of your diet helps or getting on a treadmill reduced that ache in your leg. It can get overwhelming - I get it. Understanding what your body needs now is crucial. It may be different than five or ten years ago. Or maybe you’re suffering in the same way you have been for a decade but you just accept that is how you are meant to feel. Humans are meant to thrive. Just look at the blue zones where people gracefully age beyond 100 years old without chronic illness that is so rampant here in America. We deserve to age well too.
Start somewhere. Feel empowered if your body is telling you that you need to tune into your health needs. Common sense goes a long way too. I know a lot of people reading this are well aware of what they could change. The first step is recognizing it. The next step is taking action for healthy change. If you need help - ask for it. If you are seeking a natural approach consider seeking out a Naturopathic Doctor who understands root cause medicine. Health plans that cover all aspects of wellness include Nutrition, Healthy habits, and Nutraceuticals. Small changes towards health make a big difference. You’ll be grateful you did and that attitude of gratitude is a huge hug for the heart which is love in one of its purest forms.

Heart Shaped Ravioli
PREP TIME: 90 MINUTES | SERVING SIZE – TWO DOZEN – 3 INCH SIZE HEARTS
FOR THE DOUGH: HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED
• 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting (up to a ½ cup extra in case dough is sticky)
• ½ teaspoon salt – extra salt for boiling
• 3 large eggs, plus 1 for egg wash (you will need a total of 5 for dough, wash and filling)
• 1 to 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 heart-shaped cookie cutter
HERE IS HOW YOU DO IT:
In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt; make a well in the center. Add the eggs and 1 tablespoon of the olive oil to the well and lightly beat with a fork. Gradually draw in the flour from the inside wall of the well in a circular motion. Use one hand for mixing and the other hand to hold the bowl. Continue to incorporate all the flour until it forms a ball. If dough is too sticky, add in additional flour- slowly dough should be soft, tacky, but not sticking to your hands. Divide into two disk portions. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap; let rest for about 30 minutes to allow the gluten to relax. (This is a good time to make your filling!)
CLASSIC CHEESE WITH SPINACH RAVIOLI
FILLING
• 1 lb. ricotta cheese
• ½ cup frozen spinach, thawed and drained (well drained) – (optional)
• 3 tablespoons grated cheese
• 1 teaspoon fresh or dried chopped parsley (optional)
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 1 large egg
In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients except egg. Taste the filling to make sure you have enough salt and pepper in your filling. Mix in egg. Chill in fridge until you are ready to use.
ASSEMBLING AND COOKING YOUR RAVIOLI
Beat 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of water to make an egg wash. Take small pieces of dough at a time, leaving the rest in the plastic. Coat well with flour and roll out super thin. Cut out two hearts, then roll the heart pieces again. Using a brush or your finger, create a line around the edges of one piece of dough with the egg wash, which acts as a glue.
Drop a tablespoon of your filling in the center. Top
with second piece of dough. With your fingers, gently press out air pockets around each mound of filling. Use cookie cutter to cut each ravioli again into a heart shape; pinch the edges tight with your finger to make a tight seal. Set completed ravioli on a flat cookie sheet lined with parchment or plastic wrap until all are ready.
Cook the ravioli 4 to 6 at a time in boiling, salted (1 teaspoon salt+ 1 tablespoon olive oil) at least 4 quarts of water for 4 minutes; they will float to the top when ready. Lift the ravioli from water with a large strainer or slotted spoon. Finish off the ravioli in your favorite sauce to lightly coat and serve. To freeze and enjoy later, place uncooked ravioli on a cookie sheet in the freezer. Once hardened, transfer to an airtight container and store up to 2 months.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
ISN’T IT TIME TO
LAND
THE JOB OF YOUR DREAMS?
Of the many resolutions people make at the beginning of a new year, a common one is to change jobs. Oftentimes, a new year acts as a catalyst to seek a new job and the benefits of a better boss, an improved quality of work life, or a nice increase in one’s compensation. If you are seeking a new gig, this should help.
CRAFT A KILLER RESUME
Getting contacted about job opportunities is all about the quality of your resume and cover letter. How you look on paper can literally change your life! Crafting a resume that gets hiring managers to begin envisioning you in the job is no easy feat. If you are not an expert in understanding what hiring managers are looking for, which today is a moving target your resume will
fall on the “do not contact” pile. Enlist the help of someone who knows how to write your cover letter and resume so that you are seen as a strongly viable candidate for the roles you would love to have.
KNOW WHAT YOUR “MUST HAVES” ARE
BUYER BEWARE
Donald Benenson, SPHR, CEC, consultants with businesses on developing ways to maximize their employees’ performance. Additionally, he is a professional resume writer and job search coach. He can be contacted at dbenenson984@gmail.com.
Looking for a job sucks! There, I said it. Oftentimes, we become emotionally exhausted in our search efforts. And if you are out of work, you are also feeling stressed. Add to it other factors, such as being an older person, and it is easy to say yes when it would have been better to say no to an offer. With fingers crossed, we hope that the vibes we picked up such as your potential boss having some personality quirks, or that a considerable portion of the job is boring, were misreads on our parts. Trust your intuition and sixth sense. The euphoria you felt from being hired will not last very long if the things that made you apprehensive to begin with become real. Then you will be right back where you started.
Great interviewers are persuasive. They know how to present and discuss the less than satisfying aspects of a job in ways that do not make them sound that onerous. A “challenging work environment” might be a less than forthright way of describing a frenetic one that has so many balls in the air that you will end your workday exhausted from juggling them. Comments like, “there is a strong emphasis on productivity” might be a subtle way of saying that your actual workload might be larger than the compensation for the role.
Be super inquisitive. Intellectual curiosity is an asset that almost every employer values. So, show off yours!
I have seen far too many people stay far too long at their jobs. Perhaps it is time for you to land the job of your dreams.

A Man, A Plan, A Canal…
Panama
Whetheryou are reading that right to left or left to right cruising the Panama Canal is one of the greatest travel wonders of the world. In December we flew to Panama City to board a ship that sailed thru the canal from the Pacific to the Atlantic and then up the coast of Central America. COPA which is the national airline of Panama flies 4 nonstops a day from JFK to Panama City.
Arriving in Panama City 2 days before the cruise departed we had time to explore this fascinating city. Hotel prices and meals were very reasonable and the weather was gorgeous. Panama has only 2 seasons. The dry season which runs from mid-December to mid-April and the rainy season which lasts from late April until late November.
Panama City is home to a very large and thriving Jewish community and we took a wonderful Jewish tour filled with history as well as current sights. We also booked a city tour which took us to the Miraflores Locks Visitors Center where they have a fascinating IMAX movie about the construction of the canal.
Two days later we boarded our ship and settled in for 9 days of sunshine and warmth in contrast to the chilly December weather in New York. Our first day on the cruise was spent transiting the canal which takes anywhere between 8 – 10 hours.
Built by the United States between 1904 and 1914, the 51 mile long canal connects the Caribbean Sea with the Pacific Ocean. It cuts across the narrowest point of the Isthmus of Panama. Locks at each end lift and then lower ships to and from Gatun Lake, an artificial fresh water lake 85 feet above sea level. The locks were built to reduce the amount of digging required for the canal’s construction.
Ships pay a toll to transit the canal based on size. A personal boat under 50 feet is about $800. A large cruise ship could be $500,000. It depends on the number of beds on the ship.
Many cruise lines have Panama Canal itineraries. The best months to sail are in the winter as it’s the dry season and you can enjoy the sunshine as well as a respite from the cold weather.
So whether you sail east to west or west to east it’s a journey you will never forget!

O552 North Country Rd., St. James (631) 400-4628
riginality, creativity with a sense of eclectic curiosity has made The Stone Goat the new shiny object of the St James community. A free-standing structure located near the intersection of North Country Road and Lake Avenue appeals to those that want to experience far more than what meets the eye. As you enter the space, you’ll find a welcoming bar with high tops, adjoined by a well-appointed dining room with alluring u-shaped booths. There is also an upstairs Tap Room with a separate pub style menu that is perfect for private gatherings. From the Tap Room there is access to a one-of-a-kind brewery where events and live music will soon be taking place this Spring.
Owners Nick Gounaris and Al Hand (executive chef) hatched the name to create a certain sense of intrigue. Once perusing the menu, you’ll understand why. The care and attention that went into the development of each entrée was skillfully thought out to connect the true food enthusiast with something special. The lineup of fare is not overwhelming, but manages to touch upon all the colors, textures and flavor profiles from the land and sea.
For starters, we had the Grilled East Point Oysters; Spooned into five delicate shells in a savory herbed compound butter elixir with a hint of char, were delicious. I could have easily devoured a dozen or two but wanted to leave room for what was to come. The Beets and Goat Cheese Arugula Salad with candied walnuts and vinaigrette was light and refreshing.
For the mains I had the Bone in Rib Eye. A 22 oz. 45-day dry aged steak. In all candor I am a little bit of a steak snob and was initially reluctant to order it. However, I can tell you straight away that it was one of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time. Cooked medium rare the steak was tender, and packed with that beefy flavor, mostly found at old-school New York City steak houses. My partner ordered the Black and White Sesame Tuna: A generous size cut with Black Forbidden Rice infused with Coconut, Lemongrass, with Bok Choy and a touch of Soy. A generous loin served medium rare. Buttery and savory, nothing beats that “meaty taste” you get from a fresh tuna steak. Though there was plenty of food on the table, my curiosity got the best of me and went in for the Short Rib Surf. Beautifully braised, buttery, rich in marbling, fall off the bone with a melt in your mouth texture (have I gotten your attention?). Embedded within a rich and creamy risotto was a small lobster tail. Once taking a bite of this dish, you’ll close your eyes and say ummm!…trust me on this one.
Wanting to end on a good note, their in-house masterful pastry chef brought us The Maple Bourbon Bread Pudding; soaked in rye, topped with salted caramel gelato, pecans, and fresh cream. A sweet and savory sensation! Following suit was the Flourless Chocolate Cake. Though rich and decadent, the chef goes over the top with a Dark Cherry Gelato, Fresh Cream, and yes Chocolate Sauce. A chocoholic’s dream come true.
The next time you are planning a night out, allow your curiosity to be your guide and follow your passion to The Stone Goat Restaurant and Brewery.
