T E A M C A P TA I N S LEARN LEADERSHIP AT G E T T Y S B U R G A group of varsity sport team captains from the U.S. Naval Academy gathered in Gettysburg, Penn., July 19-20 to discuss the leadership challenges they will face in the upcoming academic year. The two-day retreat was designed to give the midshipmen the opportunity to attend seminars on various leadership topics and discuss their obligations both to their teams and to the Brigade of Midshipmen. “Varsity captains are often confronted with some very vexing leadership challenges,” said Cmdr. HALF MARATHON, 5-MILER
The inaugural Navy-Air Force Half Marathon and the 9th annual Navy 5-Miler will be held Sept. 16 starting at 7:30 a.m. on the grounds of the Washington Monument in D.C. The race is open to all military and civilian runners. Register online at http://www.navyairforcehalfmarathon.com until Sept. 11. Fees will be $75 for military and $85 for civilians through Aug. 31, when each fee will increase by $10. Navy 5-Miler fees are $35 for military and $40 for civilians through Aug. 31, then increase to $40 for military and $45 for civilians. Teams (min. of 4, max of 8 runners per team) may also register online.
COED YOUTH SOCCER
The Billy the Kid Youth Center will sponsor the annual Coed Youth Soccer League for DoD family members, ages 5 through 10. The league will have three age divisions. Registration will run from July 30 through August 24 at the Youth Center, 126 Alder Road, NSA Annapolis. Birth certificates are necessary for registration. Games will be held on Saturdays at 9 a.m. at the NSA Annapolis fields, Sept. 8-Oct. 27. Cost is $50 per player and includes a jersey and trophy. Volunteer coaches are needed.
