MIDSHIPMEN LOOK TO F U T U R E O F M I C RO RO B OT I C S A Naval Academy systems and electrical engineering team took second and third place in the 2012 Mobile Microrobotics Challenge at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation May 14-18 in St. Paul, Minn. Each competing team had to design and build its own microrobots that could fit within a 500-micrometer virtual cube, a space smaller than the average thickness of a human cornea. The microrobotics challenge required teams to perform a series of tasks using robots that are so small that the arena is under a microscope. During the first challenge, the microrobot must navigate a prescribed course through a planar track in the fastest possible time.
