What’s better than a good superhero movie? Well, how about a superhero movie with six...that’s right...SIX SUPERHEROES!! Well that’s exactly what you’re going to get when you go to see the Avengers!

So who are the Avengers? They are earth’s mightiest heroes, formed to fight villains so totally deadly that no single hero could defeat them. The Avengers first assembled in comic book form way back in 1963 to defeat the evil Loki, who was seeking revenge from Thor, his adoptive brother. Since then they have gone through many groupings, civil wars, personal conflicts, deaths and rebirths. The line up has changed quite a lot over the years and has included heroes like Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Iron Man, Ms Marvel, the Hulk, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Thor, Luke Cage and even Wolverine. Snikt! This month, Avengers is coming to the big screen and focuses on the six most important Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye. Just like the comic, the movie also features Loki as the villain. Now you might be wondering why six superheroes are needed to defeat Loki. Well, if you have seen the individual movies, you might have caught a glimpse of the Cosmic Cube. The cube is a source of unlimited power capable of literally reshaping the world and Loki has gotten his hands on it. To make matters worse, he also has a massive evil army. Have you ever wondered why you never get to see Superman and Iron Man duking it out? It’s because they are both owned by two different comic book companies. DC Comics makes comics and movies for Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Robin, Green Arrow, Green Lantern and the Flash, along with superhero teams Justice Society, the Justice League and the Teen Titans. While, Marvel makes comics and movies for Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Avengers, Fantastic Four, Wolverine, Thor and Captain America. The two companies sometimes get together for special edition comics where both their characters fight it out but don’t expect a movie anytime soon. Now Marvel has been preparing for this movie for the past four years. In the past few years, we’ve seen S.H.I.E.L.D. – international intelligence agency, led by Nick Fury (The man with the eye patch) recruiting all the major superheroes in the movies: Thor, Iron Man 1 and 2, Captain America and The Hulk. Now it’s finally here! Excited yet? I know I am! Avengers Assemble! Bring on the popcorn!

Activity Corner

Glowing Bubbles Kids simply enjoy blowing bubbles so here is a twist on this classic activity that can make the bubbles glow in the dark. You can now have long hours of fun with this easy and inexpensive way of making your favourite activity even more amusing.

Bubble solution:

• (500 ml) cup dishwashing detergent • 4½ (4.5 litres) cups of water • 4 tablespoons (60 ml) glycerine • Measure out the water, detergent, and glycerine into a container with a cover and stir gently. The longer you let the mixture set, the larger the bubbles are and the longer they seem to last.

Glow solution: • Cut a highlighter marker in half with a small knife on a cutting board. • Pull the ink-saturated felt out of the pen. • Put the felt in a cup of water to let the glowing ink transfer into the water. Squeeze the felt to release all of the ink. • Add the glowing water to the bubble solution. • Shine a black light on the bubbles as you blow them to make them glow.

The glowing bubble solution is very safe, provided you used non-toxic highlighter pen. Also, ask an elder to do the task of cutting for you as safety comes first. It is recommended to blow the bubbles outdoors so that you don’t have to wash glowing liquid off of walls or furniture. Bubble solution is already pretty soapy, so clean up any spills with lots of water. Remember kids, always get permission from your parents before you start. It’s always a good idea to have a helper nearby.

Be your favourite superhero

Ever fancied being a superhero? Here is your chance! Comic book fans can now be turned into to action figures of their favourite superheroes. The 3D process turns two photos of a human face - taken from the front and the side - into a 3D plastic head. They can then be attached to bodies of superheroes including Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Batgirl. The 17cm action figures, which cost £79.99 (Rs11,804), are so detailed they even replicate eye colour, skin tone and hair style. Paul Broomfield, from online firm Firebox, said: “We came up with this idea because we thought everyone must have dreamt of being a superhero at one stage in their life. All the customer has to do is upload a couple of photos of their face, a side shot and a straight on. The Firebox team then gets to work digitising, rendering and 3D colour-printing the image. The end result is your very own personalised superhero action figure.” SOURCE: WEB.ORANGE.CO.UK

Journey to the centre of the ... Volcano! As of next month, visitors to Iceland with a taste for adventure will be able to sign up for a tour that takes them inside the crater of a colossal volcano. This might seem an unwise idea in a country where, infamously, the tongue-twisting Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in March 2010, spewing out a giant cloud of ash and debris that caused huge problems for airlines. But 3H Travel, the Icelandic travel company behind the tours into the maw of the Thrihnukagigur (say that five times fast) volcano, insists that its out-on-a-limb expedition is entirely safe. Eye Watering Stunt With enough hours in the gym, anyone can get strong arms or legs, but it’s a little harder to get strong eye sockets. Which makes the recent feat of Chinese strong man Yang Guanghe even more impressive. On April 28, Guanghe managed to pull a 1.6-ton Mercedes Benz with his eye sockets! “It takes years of training to toughen the eyelids up to get to this sort of level where you can perform feats like this,” said Guanghe. But pulling heavy objects with his eyelids isn’t Guanghe’s only amazing feat. He also puts four lit lightbulbs on a table before placing a board on top with two sharp knives on it with the blades pointing up. Then he stands on the sharpened blades with his bare feet, attaches two hooks to his lower eyelids that hold two buckets of water and plays the flute! “Don’t try this at home! I ama a professional,” Guaghe said. SOURCE: HUFFINGTONPOST.COM

Pig poo power the answer to China’s porky poser? Seven hundred million pigs produce a lot of poo. China’s love of pork presents a mountain of a problem for the environment, 1.4 million metric tons (1.5 million tons) of pig poo a year to be precise, but an Australian company believes it has part of the answer. Why not turn the pig poo into power? Using a bioreactor called “PooCareTM” and other technology, the pig manure is converted into biofuel for cooking and heating while the residual goes to farmers as nutrient-rich fertilizers. “The benefits are energy and fuel for farmers as well as preventing further contamination of the environment,” said Ravi Naidu, chief scientist at CRC for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC Care), a South Australian-based firm involved in drawing up the technology. “So it’s really a green technology from that perspective,” he added. Duck-ing around the world It’s hard to feel blue when you see an 85-foot-tall yellow rubber duck. Well, that’s the theory of Dutch artist Flortijn Hofman, who is putting it to the test by sending an inflatable rubber duck of that size on a five-year mission around the globe -- including, so far, Auckland, New Zealand, Osaka, Japan and France’s Loire Valley. Hofman, who is based in Rotterdam, has also created giant frogs and bunnies, but he has a special place in his heart for the duck, according to Twisted Sifter. “The rubber duck knows no frontiers, it doesn’t discriminate and doesn’t have a political connotation,” he told the website. “The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve tension.” SOURCE: HUFFINGTONPOST.COM

s n i g i r O d r Wo Bury the Hatchet Have you ever had a fight with your best friend and your mother told you to bury the hatchet? Ever wondered what that meant. A hatchet is a disagreement. So, you bury it so that it doesn’t emerge again. It does sometimes give the impression that the parties are not entirely happy but try to forget this particular problem. The phrase comes from the practice of putting away the tomahawk (axe) at the end of the war between the Native Americans in the eastern United States. Weapons were to be buried or otherwise stored in times of peace.

Cool facts A giraffe can clean its ears and nose with its 21-inch tongue Millions of trees are accidentally planted by squirrels who bury nuts and then forget where they hid them. At birth, a panda is smaller than a mouse and weighs about four ounces. A dog’s shoulder blades are unattached to the rest of the skeleton to allow greater flexibility for running. There are no such things as black panthers. They are either leopards or jaguars with really dark coloured skin.
