Living in Tennessee, with our beautiful mountains and lush scenery, it’s no surprise so many of us love autumn. The crispness in the air paired with the changing colors of the leaves on the trees help usher in a season of transition. Time to break out the sweaters and boots and prepare for what’s next - the holiday hustle and bustle!
Design Decor is in its own “season of transition,” as well, settling into our new expanded showroom at 6217 Baum Drive in Knoxville. The move gives us more room to show you what we do: deliver designer-quality decor to your door every season.
Right now we’re embracing the rich hues of fall with one-of-a-kind floral arrangements made by our Master Florist Linda Heaton Ridings. Think show-stop ping pieces skillfully crafted using real touch flowers. That means they look just as good as fresh flowers, only they never need to be replaced! Brighten up any space with the reds, oranges, greens and purples popping up on our palette this season.
Speaking of orange, now that football is back (finally!), we’re cheering on the University of Tennessee Volunteers with tailgate party pieces sure to score some points. From serving trays to decorative ornaments, we have what you need to win with your crowd.
And while we’re not trying to speed up the clocks any, the countdown is on until those bright leaves on trees turn into bright lights. Christmastime will be here before you know it. It’s a lot of work to put up the tree and deck the halls - and we want to help!
That’s why we’re hosting our Winter Wonderland Tree Theme Reveal from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fri., Oct. 20 and Sat., Oct. 21. Yes, it’s tough to think about Christmas before Halloween, but this is your chance to see all our new decorated trees before anyone else! You’ll get exclusive discounts, first dibs on our holiday collections and get the best choice of dates for us to turn your own home or business into a winter wonderland.
Sure, you can shop for gift items
and individual pieces in our showroom. We always welcome that! But, more than that, we want to help make your days merry by taking away some of your seasonal stress. Our team of professional decorating experts can help you select a theme that fits your tastes for every season - spring to Christmas - then deliver the items and perfectly place them in your home or business. You don’t have to lift a finger! We’ll come back and change everything out when the season’s over, too. Come visit our showroom and let the ladies of Design Decor help make your decorating dreams come true.
Step inside our showroom and be transported to a winter wonderland as we reveal our new 2023 Christmas decor themes. 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
This year, enjoy more of the “most wonderful time of year” by letting our holiday helpers relieve some of your seasonal stress. Our professional decorating team can deliver, install, and take down your home or business Christmas tree and decor in just a few hours!
As I write this, I am sitting on my porch swing on my deck overlooking the woods behind our home. This is my happy place! The leaves are beginning to change, and I know that soon the rich, vibrant colors of fall will take over the landscape.
The pre-holiday season has begun, and from now until January, so many activities will be focused on holiday events and preparations. From October’s Harvest festivals and November’s Thanksgiving family dinners to December’s Christmas gift exchanges and New Year’s celebrations, it is a very busy three months. And all our advertisers help to make your preparations less stressful by highlighting products and services that will enhance your holiday time with friends and family. This edition of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views is packed with helpful information, as well as product and service descriptions that can benefit you, our readers, during these holiday months. What do you need to do to get ready?
You may notice a repeated theme in this month’s issue: the beautiful colors of Fall in East Tennessee. For many, this is their favorite time of year, however brief this vibrant spectacle may be, even though it leads to a barren season which then makes us yearn for Spring. Fall is about change; shedding of the old, preparing for the new.
But most of us don’t like change. It’s hard. Many of us shy away from it, even when we know it’s for the better – in favor of staying in our comfort zone, in favor of what’s familiar.
As I sit on my swing, drinking in the beauty of nature, I am reminded that God is the creator of all, and He never changes. Maybe the beauty and splendor of fall, especially here in East Tennessee, is God reminding us that change can be beautiful if we embrace it and count our blessings. Getting out of our comfort zone can lead to new experiences and new personal growth. So, enjoy fall. Enjoy the beautiful colors of nature and the cooler weather. And remember that change can lead to something beautiful.

I’ve been in the flooring industry for over four decades now, and in all that time, I’ve witnessed quite the evolution in the marketplace. Some truly innovative new products have been introduced. But do you know the one product that stands out in my mind? It’s called Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring.
These days, Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring, otherwise known as LVP, is one of the most sought-after interior features by both homeowners and designers alike. Its surface, available in both wood and stone finishes, offer unparalleled beauty, versatility, longevity, and resale appeal. The look is almost indistinguishable from genuine hardwood or stone, and the surfaces are so rich in texture, grain, and contour, you’ll nearly be convinced it’s the real thing. Available in all the colors, hues, and tones imaginable, you can now install LVP Flooring in any room of your home or business: below grade, in kitchens and baths, there’s no limitation except your imagination.
If that sounds like exactly what you need for a single room remodel, or even an update for your entire home, I would like to personally invite you to visit Country Carpet & Flooring. Located at 3107 Highway 411 in Madisonville, across from Sequoyah High School, we’ll show you our virtually unlimited selection of Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring and explain their many advantages over traditional wood floors. LVP Flooring won’t warp or stain, it’s waterproof, and it’s even highly resistant to scratching. Best of all, we can help you to create that classic look of traditional hardwood and stone flooring for less money and maintenance.
And while you’re visiting, be sure to ask about our semi-custom, solid wood, kitchen and bath cabinetry lines. Discover how to achieve that showcase-look for far less than you might have imagined.

We Lutherans get excited when October rolls around, because on October 31st we get to celebrate our favorite holiday. No, it is not Halloween, although that is a pretty fun holiday too. It so happens that it was on Halloween evening in the year 1517 that Martin Luther posted his famous 95 theses on the door of the castle Church in Wittenburg Germany. He chose that evening because the next day was All Saints Day, which meant that many faithful would be coming to worship and would see his freshly posted ideas. Luther’s intention was to invite debate and perhaps propose a more wholesome viewpoint on some of the ideas and practices that had crept into the Church over hundreds of years of teaching, especially those centered on purgatory and indulgences. Luther did not intend to begin the Protestant Reformation, but when he was eventually condemned as a heretic for insisting on biblical teaching, his way forward was set. He and his associates bravely articulated a new vision of what it meant to be the Church.
The Reformation became centered on five principles all described by phrases in Latin known as the “solas.” These are: sola scriptura (scripture alone), sola gratia (grace alone), sola fide (faith alone), solus Christus (Christ alone), and soli deo gloria (to the glory of God alone). An emphasis on the Bible, faith in Christ, a reliance upon God’s grace for our salvation, and a desire to give glory to God alone became emphases that gave renewal to the whole Christian Church.
Whether you are protestant or catholic, a regular church goer or someone for whom faith has slipped by the wayside, I invite you to take time this month to think about the great things that the Spirit has done to bring the good news to unlikely places such as East Tennessee. Over thousands of miles and thousands of years, through error, Reformation, and renewal, the Holy Spirit has guided and guarded the Church’s message.
We will be celebrating Reformation Sunday on October 29th, and we invite you to join us for worship! However, we see this celebration and the lead up to it as more than a celebration just for Lutherans. We see it as a celebration that despite all that can go astray in the world and even in the Church, that God doesn’t give up on us. God sends
Pastor David Talley continues his sermon series on ‘this is what we believe’ every Sunday morning at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village. He recently completed a thorough study about who God is by teaching the biblical concept of the Trinity - God in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. Pastor Dave made it quite clear it is almost impossible for our finite human minds to comprehend how God manifests Himself as three distinct personalities while being the one true God of the Bible. As the sermon series continues, Pastor Dave will relate each Scriptural truth to our everyday lives.
The Crafter’s fall sale will be held at the Community Church of Tellico Village on Saturday, November 4, from 9 am to noon in the Christian Life Center of the church located at 130 Chota Center in Tellico Village.
Check the baked goods first while there is a good supply of cakes, cookies, snack items and other treats such as Jezebel. The timing is ideal since many items can be frozen and served during the upcoming holiday season.
There will be florals, mailbox covers, a variety of sewing items, jewelry, bridge tallies, cards, needlework items and holiday & Christmas decorations from wreathes, mini trees and handmade ornaments. Bring cash or your checkbook as credit cards are not accepted.
All the proceeds go to benefit local charities in Loudon and Monroe counties some of which are Child Advocacy Center, Good Samaritan of Loudon County, Tellico Village Fire Dep.-First Responders, Good Shepard of Monroe County and Shelter My Sheep (veterans).
Crafters meet most Mondays throughout the year creating items for sale and it is a wonderful way to meet new people. Anyone is welcome to join, and you do not have to be a member of the church.
If you are looking for a church home, come and worship with us as Pastor Dave preaches from the Bible on the great doctrines of the Christian faith and shares the Words of Jesus. Our exceptional music ministry includes our choir and orchestra under the leadership of David Whipple, Jr. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples and we take that charge quite seriously. Under the leadership of our Associate Pastor Kem Lindsay, we offer several Bible study options. Sunday Worship services are 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM and Bible study options available at the same times. Deciding to transform your smile is a big step. That’s why I meet with patients on almost a daily basis in order to help them decide the best way to proceed.
Up until recently, patients relied on the traditional metal braces that most of us are familiar with. Fortunately, today patients can now take advantage of a brand new technology from Invisalign. These clear aligners from Invisalign represent an allnew and exciting alternative to traditional metal braces. They are:
» Virtually invisible
» Easily removable for eating and drinking
» Easily removable for brushing and flossing
» Comfortable
If you’re ready to see if Invisalign is right for you, just call our office to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation consultation. If you’re ready to get started, we will create your very own personalized treatment plan. Your treatment plan begins with a precise digital scan (no goopy putty required). Next, your digital scan is used to create your custom aligners. Your custom aligners are carefully designed to gently shift your teeth in stages to achieve your desired smile. Patients typically wear aligners for a minimum of 20 hours per day and replace aligners at two-week intervals during the treatment period. Because each of our teeth is surrounded by periodontal ligaments that permit controlled
movement at the teeth, Invisalign aligners gently realign your teeth by shifting them to the new desired location.
If you’re ready to discover that perfect smile, I encourage you to call Heritage Family Dentistry at 865-816-9211 to schedule your free consultation. Our compassionate and caring dental care

When family and friends are outside enjoying a special event or just a time of relaxation, why be forced to bring your party back inside because of an unexpected afternoon shower or that relentless summertime sun? The solution is simple thanks to Undercover Systems.
If your home has a raised deck, Undercover Systems will install a modular designed roof system under the underside of your deck. Their patented roof/ceiling system, consisting of individual ceiling panels and integrated gutters, collect rain water and melting snow or ice, channeling water and debris from the panels to the system’s perimeter gutters and downspout system. While protecting you from rain, this same ceiling system will also provide much needed shade during those “Dog Days” of summer.
Homeowners appreciate the fact they can select from a variety of colors and panel profiles to create that showcase quality look that not only enhances their home’s exterior appearance, but also increases the value of their homes. “But be careful not to confuse Undercover Systems with the competition which uses generic, off-the-shelf components purchased from the local big-box retailers,” says local Undercover Systems owner, Jim Conn. “Every system we install is custom engineered, designed and manufactured by Undercover System specifically for your home’s raised deck. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here at Undercover Systems.”
Here are some other important facts to consider when selecting an underdeck roofing system:
» The Undercover System is self-supported by its structurally engineered load bearing gutter system that attaches to the inside perimeter of the area being covered.
» This patented Under-deck Ceiling System does NOT attach to your home’s deck joists – no nailing, stapling or joist modification.
» To protect your deck joists, NO water or debris are brought into direct contact with your home’s deck joists. So why are these facts important you might ask?
Architecturally recognized to promote the health of your deck, Undercover Systems modular, self-supporting Under-deck Ceiling Systems are designed to maximize the air flow in and around your deck joists ensuring their longevity. Systems that attach directly to deck joists can impair the free flow of air which can dramatically reduce the life of your deck.
“We can help you to replace that dark, damp space under your home’s deck with a dry outdoor living space that you and your family can enjoy in every season of life. Why not transform that space into a new outdoor living room or kitchen that blends seamlessly into your home’s exterior and surrounding landscaping?”
Say goodbye to that ugly water stained, cobweb underside of your home’s raised deck and hello to your new designer inspired out-of-doors living area with one easy phone call. A complaint free member of the Better Business Bureau, Jim and his team of experienced craftsmen will complete your project to your complete satisfaction. In fact, Jim personally supervises each and every Undercover Systems installation and backs it up with a lifetime guarantee.
Discover the Undercover Systems difference for yourself and begin creating a lifetime of family memories today. All it takes is a phone call.

Fall and winter are special seasons for those of us who are into fashion, and this year is certainly no exception!
The number one look this fall is the wide leg pant, and before you say no to this trend, read on!
You may assume if you’re not a size 2 and 6 feet tall, this look isn’t right for you. So it might also surprise you that we sell out of sizes 1X, 2X and 3X first in our wide leg pants!
A wide leg pant can add volume to your lower body (in a good way!), in turn, balancing out your proportions. A wide leg pant with a high rise can also elongate your legs.
One important thing about wearing wide leg pants is making sure the length is just right - you should not have a pool of fabric at your ankles and your hem should not drag the floor. Alterations are always complimentary at The Lily Pad, so we can always ensure the length of your wide leg pants is just perfect!
Our sales associates will guide you in selecting the most flattering tops to pair with your wide leg jeans or trousers.
As you’re dealing with a lot of fabric on your bottom half already, it’s important to keep your top more streamlined to provide balance. A sleek button down or lightweight sweater
are both great options, or perhaps a t-shirt for a more casual look with your wide leg jeans.
If you’re not ready for wide legs, don’t worry! Leggings, joggers, and straight leg pants are still in style and always available at The Lily Pad. Our favorite thing about fashion right now is that every look is “in”... meaning you can (and should!) wear whatever makes you look and feel most confident!
Our goal at The Lily Pad is to always ensure you stay on top of your game when it comes to fashion! Stop in and let us introduce you to the number one look for fall 2023... wide leg pants! There’s sure to be a number one look for you!

Back in 1996, Tennessee got a brand new highway, in the form of the beautiful, scenic Cherohala Skyway. At roughly 43 miles long, the Skyway took a whopping thirty-four years to make and cost over $100 million. But if you’ve driven down it, you know it was worth every penny. The Skyway winds through the forests of the Unaka Mountains and the Tennessee River Valley, with gorgeous vistas, beautiful hiking trails, and mile-high overlooks along the way. If you haven’t gone before, you have to experience it for yourself.
Often referred to as one of Tennessee’s best kept secrets, particularly among motorcycling and scenic driving circles, the Skyway connects two verdant national parks: the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee and the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. In fact, its name is derived from both those national forests, with the “chero” from Cherokee, and the “hala” from Nantahala. Starting in Tellico Plains and running all the way to Robbinsville, North Carolina, the Skyway takes about two hours to drive and offers breathtaking views of the Smoky Mountains as well as parts of the southern Appalachian National Forest few people get to see.
If you’re planning a trip along the Cherohala Skyway, there’s a few things you just have to check out along the way. First off is the Cherohala Skyway Visitor Center at the very start of the Skyway in Tellico Plains, where you can find fun souvenirs, updates on local driving conditions, food, free maps of the road ahead, and, most importantly, bathrooms. You’ll probably want to take advantage of the bathrooms at least, since driving the Skyway takes about two hours to complete, with only a few signs of civilization or rest stops along the way. Additionally, the cell phone coverage is limited, so those maps will be helpful as well. But along the way, the Skyway is practically teeming with opportunities for hiking, camping, kayaking, canoeing, bird watching, picnicking, and places just to sit back and take in the gorgeous scenic views around you.
With fifteen scenic overlooks, stunning vistas of up to a mile in elevation, and beautiful views of the local foliage, it’s no wonder that you’ll see vehicles of all shapes and sizes: ranging from bicycles, to motorcycles, to sportscars, to motorhomes. Not to mention everything in between. Just be aware that the Skyway sweeps up and down through the hills and mountains, with its elevation ranging from 800
feet to 5400, with a few fairly steep slopes along the way.
If you want to experience all this for yourself, you’re in luck! Though the Skyway has been closed for some time due to damage from flooding earlier in the year, it’s going to reopen any day now (if it hasn’t already by the time you’re reading this). That’s perfect timing, since fall is one of the best times to visit the Cherohala Skyway.
Not only is the weather spectacular, with perfect temperatures, limited rainfall, and plenty of cool breezes to keep your experience as pleasant as possible, but you’ll also get to take in the beautiful autumn foliage. Driving through forests and valleys while all the colors are changing is an unforgettable experience. You’ll be surrounded by vistas of red and gold leaves as far as the eye can see, along with soaring hills, and plunging valleys throughout the entirety of your two-hour journey. The leaves in the upper elevations change first, usually around September, and the changing fall colors spread down into the lower elevations all the way into November. So, no matter what time you go during the autumn, you’ll find a gorgeous view waiting for you.
Along the way, there are plenty of activities and stops that you’re sure to love: At the start of the Skyway on the Tennessee side is the Tellico Grains Bakery, where you can pick up some food for the trip (they’ve even got wood-fired pizza if you’re in the mood). Then take in the sparkling Bald River Falls, either from the comfort of your car or during a relaxing hike along the trail of the same name. A local favorite is swimming in the lake at the Indian Bound-
ary Recreation area, so long as you don’t mind there being a bit of a crowd. Then there’s the Huckleberry Knob Trail at a head-spinning elevation of over one mile above sea level, where you’re sure to find some incredible views. If you’re in the mood to take in the beauty of God’s creation in nature, you might want to check out the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, where you’ll find old-growth hardwood trees, some of which are more than 400 years old.
And that doesn’t even cover the campgrounds near the Indian Boundary Recreation Area in Tennessee or the Horse Cove campground nearer to Robbinsville, or all the scenic vistas and overlooks, or any of the other wonder’s you’ll experience on your journey along the Cherohala Skyway National Scenic Byway. Words don’t even do it justice. You just have to experience it for yourself.

As the holiday season rapidly approaches, the familiar whirlwind of hosting, cooking, and baking comes into full swing. It’s a time of joy, celebration, and, of course, culinary feats.
To ensure your kitchen is up to the task and your holiday preparations go off without a hitch, consider the indispensable role of custom pantries in modern households. Gone are the days of cramped, inefficient pantries: today’s custom pantries are a testament to storage innovation and versatility, designed to cater to your unique needs. Join us as we delve into the ways a custom pantry can be your unsung hero of this holiday season!
Five “Food for Thought” Considerations
Designing an efficient custom pantry involves several key considerations:
» Outward-Swinging Doors: To maximize storage space, ensure the pantry door swings outward. This prevents the door from impeding access and compromising storage capacity.
» Electrical Outlets: Install electrical outlets just above
the pantry counter. This allows for the use of small appliances like coffee makers or toasters within the pantry space. It’s a forward-thinking approach, as it accommodates potential appliance needs in the future without retrofitting challenges.
» Adjustable and Deep Shelving: Customize the height of your pantry shelves to accommodate various-sized food products and small appliances. Incorporate deeper shelving sections to store larger appliances such as toaster ovens, slow cookers, or mixers. This not only keeps these appliances easily accessible but also frees up valuable kitchen space.
» Functional Lighting: Good lighting is essential for a functional pantry. While it doesn’t need to be extravagant, it should be practical. Adequate lighting ensures that you can see and access items, even those at the back of the shelves.
» Specialized Storage Components: Consider your specific pantry needs. Would slide-out baskets for snacks be useful? How about vertical slotted spaces for storing baking pans and serving platters? Or
perhaps scoop-front drawers? Depending on your available space, these features offer convenience and help keep items organized and easily visible. When it comes to designing your pantry, The Tailored Closet emphasizes customizing it to your lifestyle. Our team of designers engage in a discussion with homeowners to understand your specific needs. Questions might include what items besides food you intend to store, whether you entertain frequently, your preferred design style, and whether you desire a countertop. Other considerations include the inclusion of drawers, pullout baskets for easy access, slide-out spice and wine racks, and customizations based on pantry size. Our custom pantries suit your unique needs, whether it’s a walk-in space or a rea ch-in pantry, bringing order to your kitchen chaos.

Since I photograph “beauty of Tennessee and wildlife who call it home,” I figured I’d share some landscapes I have photographed during autumn. This is my favorite time of year, not just because it’s absolutely gorgeous, but also because I just love the cooler weather. Although the Smokies are where everyone wants to be for fall, the backroads in Tennessee are just as magical without all the traffic. Most of the time I just get in my car, drive, and it takes me to places I never even knew existed; I end up at beautiful places. I hope y’all get out and enjoy this autumn!

As the season changes and we head toward time indoors with our loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia, it’s time to think about activities to do together to make the time more meaningful. Create a calendar for the month to plan specific activities for each day and something to look forward to and plan. Several lists of 101 activities to do with persons with dementia are available online; download one and put it on the refrigerator. It will be there when you feel fresh out of ideas. While the weather is mild, take a walk with your pet, water the plants, collect leaves, or put seeds in the bird feeder. Sit outside, take in the beauty of nature as the leaves change color, and breathe in the fall air - that’s a moment of joy away from the cares of the day. Enjoy a happy hour outside, with sparkling cider, pumpkin cookies, or slices of apple to celebrate autumn.
Fall also brings football season, and if you enjoy watching a game together, make the game fun. Dress in team colors or decorate a room and have some popcorn or other snacks during the game. Write down viewing times for the games on your calendar. If golf is the game to watch, find out the times of the tournaments and watch for a couple of hours. Speaking of TV, watch shows together that are light and upbeat, not depressing. Sometimes a person with Alzheimer’s or dementia cannot distinguish between fiction and reality. Fun series from the past, such as “I Love Lucy” or “The Carol Burnett Show” can bring laughs and a happy spirit.
As the weather turns colder, think of scheduling activities that include some exercise or speaking aloud. Read a book together, recite familiar prayers, poems, or recite the Pledge of Allegiance each morning. You can find seated yoga videos on TV, as well as drumming videos to keep arms and hands toned. You can both drum on laundry baskets with sticks, throw a ball into a basket, play Corn Hole or Toss Across to sharpen eye/hand coordination. The library has a great collection of puzzles, trivia games, and books for reading aloud. Adult coloring books, modeling clay, or simple model car or truck sets can be assembled. If that’s not your strength, ask a friend to come visit and have them build it together. Look through photographs and talk about times with family and friends; write those stories down to share with family later. Aside from celebrating the seasonal holidays, think about creating one just for you and your loved one. Last week I was volunteering at Our Place when the staff celebrated Hawaiian Day for one of the participants. She had mentioned that though her husband had traveled to all 50 states, she had only been to 49 - never having visited Hawaii. So, this incredible staff brought Hawaii to her! They decorated the room with a tropical theme, had a ukelele band perform, and enjoyed snacks such as pineapple salsa, and a cake with coconut topping! The smile on her face lit the entire room; then her husband, visiting for the party, placed a lei over her head and said, “You know, when you’re a given a lei, you always get a kiss!” It was truly a Moment of Joy!

If you have lived here for a few years, you know that this was a great summer. Mother Nature was (for the most part) gentle with the temperatures and generous with the rain. We had a few hot days and couple of short periods of drought and rough humidity, but compared to some years it was awesome. That does not mean, however, that I am sad to see summer go. I am ready for cooler temps and all the fall décor! It seems like all our customers are in the same state of mind, so let’s talk about fall planting.
Why is fall the best time to plant trees and shrubs?
Because fall and winter is the time when the majority of root growth occurs. Plants aren’t trying to grow, bloom or put on leaves, so 100% of their effort goes into roots. That means that any trees and shrubs planted between now and the end of December have a head start on those planted next spring.
Here are a few things you need to know about fall gardening:
1. October is typically our driest month. This means that you must water well. Sprinklers are inadequate for trees and shrubs because they deposit water at the surface. For trees and shrubs, you need to get water 12” into the soil at least once a week. Hand watering or using a drip line or a tree diaper works best.
2. Some of your plants probably don’t look great. This doesn’t mean they are dead or dying. We had a lot of diseases and insects hanging around this year so spotty and/ or holey leaves are more common than nice green ones right now. Some trees have already defoliated. Some plants are leggy and overgrown. When we have one of those glorious cool days, I suggest you go out and do a little work. Pull weeds, trim overgrown plants (call us if you don’t know what to prune), apply an organic fertilizer and fluff up your mulch.
3. You can plant other things besides trees and shrubs, but you need to do it soon. Most perennials and veggies need to get roots going before we have a frost, and our average first frost is October 23rd
If you want to know more about fall planting, come and talk to us. If you want ideas about what to plant, let’s talk about fall color. There are obvious tree choices, such as the red maples. There are many other trees other than red maples that also put on a show. Gingko trees have spectacular yellow leaves in fall, and Black gum trees are considered the most beautiful and reliable sources of color. Sugar maples, Shumard oaks, Autumn Brilliance Serviceberries and even Crape Myrtles can turn your yard into a fall wonderland.
How about shrubs? Camellias are one of my favorites so let’s start there. The Camellia Sasanqua is a fall bloomer and tends to be a little less temperamental than the Japonica, which blooms in the spring. The blooms will last for several weeks. Camellias prefer morning sun, afternoon shade and acidic soil and come in sizes range from 4’ to 20’. Most bloom white, pink, or red.
I also love my Oakleaf Hydrangeas, which turn a deep burgundy in the fall. Even after the leaves drop, the shape and bark of the plant is lovely. Burning bush, Virginia Sweetspire, Cotoneaster, and blueberries also turn red. For yellow shades, try Clethra, Forsythia or Witch Hazel.
What if you are looking for berries? Beautyberry is my favorite, but don’t forget viburnums, cotoneaster, chokeberry and hollies. Mahonia also has a good berry set in the fall and winter.
If you want perennials, there are several that either bloom in the fall or keep their foliage. Anemones, Joe Pye weed, Perennial Mums, Sedums and Turtlehead bloom now. In addition, many of the summer bloomers such as Coreopsis, Coneflowers, Black Eyed Susan, and Russian Sage often put on a new flush as temperatures cool. Don’t forget the perennials that are evergreen! Dianthus, some Sedums, Lenten Rose, Heuchera, and
Candytuft are just a few that stick around for the winter months. Grasses also add color and movement through the cold months.
As for annuals, you can’t beat a Pansy for color. Plant them now and they will last until next May! They do well in the ground and in containers, so stop by while the selection is good.
I will finish by reminding you of a few chores that need to be done in the fall:
1. Clean up your flower beds. Cut back fading perennials and clean up debris. You can leave plants that provide seeds for the birds but get diseased leaves up and away to prevent problems next year.
2. Please don’t bag your leaves. Run over them with your mower and then add them to your beds. They make wonderful compost, and it is absurd to pick up leaves only to turn around and fertilize. Leaf compost is like gold in the compost world.
3. Pull any weeds and then apply a pre-emergent to keep them from coming back.
4. Keep harvesting cool season veggies and herbs along with any pumpkins, squash and gourds that are still on the vine.
5. Mulch bare areas to help keep the weed population down and the soil temperature and water levels stable.
6. Don’t forget the birds! Keep those feeders clean and full. If you have a birdbath that can remain outside, keep it clean and full also. Otherwise, clean it and store it for the winter. That’s all I have for this month. Please call or stop by if you have any questions. Don’t forget that we have everything you need for fall decorating, and we will soon have everything you need for Christmas!

Every October throngs of visitors descend on the Great Smoky Mountain National Park to enjoy the “changing of the leaves.” They line up to gape at bright cinnamon, purple, orange, and crimson colors on hardwood trees throughout the park. It makes for a beautiful sight and an influx of tourism dollars for the region. Alas, it doesn’t provide the same thrill to native East Tennesseans forced to put up with the invasion. Have to admit, my wife and I love taking a Sunday afternoon drive to see the leaves, but there’s no way we’ll join the bumperto-bumper madness at Cades Cove, Clingman’s Dome or anywhere near Gatlinburg.
A great alternative loop has been to jump on the Cherohala Parkway at Tellico Plains then once in North Carolina jump on Highway 129 and coast down “the dragon’s tail” back home. Unfortunately, that route is now getting lots more bikers and inquisitive tourists.
The best kept secret is a true haven known as The Foothills Parkway. Take Highway 411 through Vonore, then right on Old 72, in a few miles connect to Hwy 129, pass Chilhowee Dam and then left on the Parkway. Near the summit, park at the Look Rock parking lot and ascend the tower for magnificent fall views. Return for a short outing or continue to the end of the parkway and an easy ride home on Highway 321.
For this great viewing tip, I ask only one thing of you. Please, please don’t tell anyone else about it, or next year we’ll be scrounging around for a new undiscovered nature trail.

October is not only the month of falling leaves and pumpkin-spiced everything; it’s also National Window Covering Safety Month. During this time, we raise awareness about the importance of child and pet safety when it comes to window treatments.
Cordless and motorized window treatments have emerged as the safest and most stylish options for homeowners.
Cordless Window Treatments: A Tangle-Free Solution
One of the most significant advantages of cordless window treatments is that they eliminate the danger posed by traditional cords. Young children and pets are naturally curious, and those dangling cords can be tempting targets for exploration. Cordless blinds and shades provide a tangle-free solution that reduces the risk of accidents.
Motorized Window Treatments: Convenience Meets Safety
Motorized window treatments are the epitome of modern convenience and safety. With the touch of a button on a remote control or a smartphone app, you can effortlessly adjust the position of your window coverings. This not only adds a touch of luxury to your home but also eliminates the need for cords or chains, reducing the risk of accidents.
Energy Efficiency
In addition to safety benefits, cordless and motorized window treatments offer energy efficiency advantages. Motorized options can be programmed to open and close at specific times of the day, optimizing natural light and temperature control. This not
only enhances your home’s energy efficiency but also reduces your energy bills.
Stylish and Versatile
More than just practical, cordless and motorized window treatments are stylish and versatile. They come in a wide range of materials, colors, and styles to complement any interior design and satisfy every style preference.
Smart Home Integration
Motorized window treatments can seamlessly integrate with your smart home system. You can schedule them to adjust based on the time of day, weather conditions, or your preferences – the ultimate in convenience!
As we recognize National Window Covering Safety Month this October, it’s essential to prioritize the well-being of your loved ones. Cordless and motorized window treatments offer a perfect blend of safety, convenience, and style. Say goodbye to tangled cords and hello to a safer, more stylish home.
Special October Offer:

When was the last time you fully enjoyed a group conversation with friends and family? Or the last time you could hear the birds in your yard sing? Are you finding yourself turning up the volume on your tv? Perhaps your spouse has begun asking you to repeat what others say, or requesting you to speak more clearly.
If you or your loved one are experiencing hearing loss, there is a temptation to leave it undiagnosed and untreated. For some, it’s difficult to admit when it’s happening, under the belief that it’s an admission that age is getting the better of them. Unfortunately, the negatives of this denial can far outweigh the positives. More and more studies are confirming that impaired memory, balance issues, and dementia may be linked to untreated hearing loss. That’s the bad news. The good news? These studies further suggest that hearing aid use may reduce the onset, or even reverse some of these disorders. That’s where we come in.
Tellico Hearing Solutions was created to help you discover if a hearing device may help you to hear better. We use the latest technology that allows us to perform complete testing either in our office or in your home, whichever is more convenient and comfortable for you. We will provide you with a thorough testing of your current hearing and, if appropriate for you, we will fit you with the best hearing aid for your budget and hearing situation. We can also provide assistive listening devices for use with your tv, phone, or audio equipment. We have devices to make your everyday living easier.
If your current older hearing aids are making everything too noisy, we’ll show you how modern hearing aids will improve the quality of your life. Interested in an upgrade? Tellico Hearing Solution provides access to the latest cutting-edge technology from all the major manufacturers, such as the following:
Phonak: Not just a great hearing aid, its smart capability allows improved streaming, smartphone connectivity, and rechargeability.
Starkey: For the first time ever, hearing aids are virtually feedback-free. Starkey’s nanotechnology also allows us to incorporate automatic telephone recognition across a full line of hearing aids.
Oticon: These hearing aids will take your open sound experience to the next level, delivering speech understanding on par with normal hearing.
Signia: Whether in a meeting, taking an important call, preparing a presentation, or having lunch with a friend, Signia’s new hearing aids allow you to enjoy their most natural sound experience along with superior connectivity and audio streaming from your smartphone and TV.
As you can see, the hearing aids we sell are not your Grandma’s hearing aids of years ago! Thanks to this new technology, you no longer have to settle for only hearing certain frequencies or volumes. It’s time to bring back the birdsong and the simple joys of everyday conversation.
So, what is the next step? Get yourself or your loved one in for a free hearing test and evaluation of your/their current hearing situation. Yes, it’s free, and it’s that easy. Experience the compassionate care that you will only find at Tellico Hearing Solutions. Remember, Robert is not only a Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, but he is also a hearing instrument wearer. Call us today, knowing we’re eager to equip you with the perfect fit to ride the new cutting edge in hearing technology.

In 2017, when the Henrys moved to Tennessee from North Carolina, they were sure to include a few convenient roll-out drawers in the kitchen cabinets of their house when it was being built. They quickly became aware that the limited number of roll-out shelves actually made it more difficult to access the items in the deep lower section of their cabinets. Not big fans of resorting to dropping to their knees on the floor in order to reach items way in the back, they decided that more roll-out shelving would be the best solution.
They had seen ads for Shelf Help, noticing that it was a local company, and gave them a call for a free estimate. After a very positive meeting with the owner of Shelf Help, where they were able to see product samples, discuss solutions for more challenging areas - like cabinets under sinksand an installation time line, the Henrys were ready to place an order. And what an order it was!
“We can’t say enough great things about Shelf Help, their products, their timeliness, or their installation. We are very happy campers!!”
- The Henrys
“After Shelf Help gave us an estimate, we were so impressed with them and their product that we immediately ordered more than 40 roll-out shelves,” said Dick Henry. “We decided to install them everywhere there were cabinet shelves in the entire house. We ordered them for the kitchen, the laundry, the butler’s pantry, our rec room, and the master bath, which has his and her sink areas. We also ordered shelves for under the kitchen, laundry, and bathroom sinks where we never thought we could have them. Shelf Help can come up with a solution for anywhere you want roll-outs.”
The Henrys were able to have their practical and useful roll-out shelving installed in just a couple of weeks - as promised! The roll-out drawers fit right into any home’s existing cabinets or pantry, providing easier access, better organization, and maximum use available storage space. Shelf Help was able to complete the installation in less than a day so that disruption was limited. Ever since the rules changed several years ago, eliminating the “file and suspend” maximizing strategies that married couples could use, I feel like Social Security strategies have fallen by the wayside and it doesn’t get the attention it still deserves. For a couple living to typical life expectancies, it can easily provide over $1 million in cash flow during retirement.
When to take Social Security is one of the biggest decisions pre-retirees face. Should they take it as soon as they retire? Or should they let it continue to grow while using their assets for income? What about spousal benefits? Ex-spousal benefits? Survivor’s benefits? Every person and every couple has a unique, best strategy, which is why we use software to help us come up with that answer.
Here are a few tips: For married couples, think through BOTH spouse’s lifetimes because the surviving spouse gets to keep the greater of the two checks. A typical strategy is to have the person with the higher SS benefit defer their benefit, allowing it grow while the other spouse starts claiming their benefit. Remember that for every year you wait past your Full Retirement Age (FRA is typically 66 to 66 ½), your benefit increases at a guaranteed 8%. Waiting for 4 years, from 66 to 70, will result in a 32% larger benefit! Your annual COLA increase is then applied to that larger benefit PLUS the surviving spouse keeps that bigger benefit too.
An important caveat that I’ve seen overlooked: if you work past age 70, don’t wait to start your SS. It won’t grow any further and at that point, you’re just letting the government keep your benefit. If that’s you – don’t delay! They will reimburse you for up to 6 months of missed payments, but other than that the missed money is gone.
Divorced? If you were married more than 10 years and have not remarried, you can be entitled to an ex-spousal benefit. (Unless you’re at least your FRA, this benefit is not very big and subject to restrictions.)
If you’re widowed, you are the only people left who STILL have the option to claim a survivor’s benefit while letting your own continue to grow at that guaranteed rate before switching over. Or conversely, you might take your own benefit while you’re younger and then switch to your survivors. (See why I have software for this?) I’ve worked with two widows recently, who didn’t know this and were leaving money on the table.
