THE HYBRID WATERFRONT


Taipei is a capital city which has several

ri v e rs fl ow ing t hr oug h. Howe v e r , in

order to prevent the flood in summer, dikes are built along the riverside, which

sacrifices the opportunity for citizens

to engage with the riverside. The dikes block the relationship between citizens

and the rivers. The relationship between riverside and buildings in the city are not considered under the urban condition.

Those areas which close to the rivers are

usually marginalised. Although Taipei city government has planned riverside activities outside the dikes, trying to shorten the

distance between citizens and the river, it is still ineffective because citizens are difficult to cross the dikes. There are only a few gates able to access the riverside.

This project proposes to test the resolution for the current condition of river dike ,

extending the public/living space from the edge of the city to the riverside.


TAIPEI /KEELUNG RIVER/ SITE LOCATION


The site locates at the entrance of Raohe Street Night Market, which is one of the most popular night markets in Taipei. Ciyou

Temple which next to the site is a representative heritage and religion centre in Songshan District. While the new transport infrastructure near this area was completed, this area became an important cultural, touring, and commercial attraction. Raohe Street Night Market is next to Keelung River, however, the dike weaken the opportunity of extending the activities to the waterfront. The intention of this project is to create a public node at the entrance of the night market, connecting the public programs to the riverside. Providing a locally cultural character for both citizens and visitors in the commercial area.

The general concept of the masterplan is to enhance activity of people, increase the student amenities and provide successful connections between private and public spaces. More specifically, in sections 70, 72, 73 and 75 the student amenities have been increased by providing additional student accommodation facilities. In sections 72 and 73, the academic precinct has been improved by extension of RMIT facilities which are being connected to the existing infrastructure through public spaces. In addition, the bridges and the sky lobbies in section 75 in conjunction with the centralized atrium in section 73 and the tenon joint structures as well as the gallery and library in section 71, aim in the creation of points of interest and recreational / public spaces in order to attract and connect people. The linkage between the urban and public spaces is the key factor in the specific masterplan. The community markets in section 75, the improvisation of pedestrian circulation in section 72 and the enchanted atmosphere of urban square in section 70 serve the same purpose, to encourage communal and social activity.

FARIDA HEADQUARTER AND SALES CENTRE

Farida has been an OEM company of guitar instruments manufacture since 1960. In 1995, they decided to create their own brand with their extensive experiences and the advanced quality. Farida has already been a well-known brand of guitar market nowadays. In order to create the distinctive space to display the features of this brand, I purpose to develop the architecture concepts from the characteristic of guitars with the operating idea of Farida.
