HOW A SINGLE SCAN CAN SAVE A LIFE We should all be taking advantage of advancements in medical technology to safeguard our health.

At reputable executive health screening centres, testing is carried out for conditions across the full medical spectrum, including for cancer, cardiovascular disease, organ function, hormone imbalance, autoimmune disease, diabetes and pre-diabetes, and many others. Modern machines costing hundreds of thousands of dollars are used and lab testing based on the latest research can test hundreds of biomarkers that together give a very accurate health map. For most of us, there will be no life-threatening disease that requires immediate attention. But for some of us there will. And this is where the value of annual executive health screening reveals itself. There is often a very fine line tread between being seemingly healthy and having a life-threatening condition, and if left undetected (i.e., untreated), the scenario can turn bad very quickly. One of the best examples of this is coronary artery disease. Most annual screenings do not properly check for this. To do so in a safe, non-invasive way, advanced testing equipment is needed. Among other things, an EBCT scanner is needed – which is a low-radiation emission machine with advanced imaging techniques that allow for much more accurate readings of calcium buildup. Essentially, if you have high levels of calcium in your coronary arteries, you may be at risk of having a heart attack because the heart may eventually become starved of the oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood it needs to stay alive. Yet most of the time there are no warning signs. That is, the first warning sign of coronary heart disease is often a heart attack, and heart attack survival rates remain low.

By having this simple, ten-minute scan with an EBCT scanner, the executive can find out if he or she has calcium buildup in any of the coronary arteries, and if it is significant enough to require immediate attention. The score is derived as a compilation of the size and brightness of all the calcium deposits seen within your arteries. An ideal score is 0 and a very high score is over 400. Scores of 1,000 and above are unfortunately more common than we’d like to see. But the good news is that today, treatment options can lead to a very quick turnaround. Stents can be inserted in what is now a very routine operation, opening up the arteries so that the immediate risk of heart attack is dealt with. Then, through lifestyle changes and medication, the disease can be reversed. We should all be taking advantage of advancements in medical technology to safeguard our health. So much can be done nowadays to reverse and eliminate life-threatening or life-altering disease, but it is very much dependent on detecting the condition early enough.
