It just seems right to those of us that love college football that as the fall semester begins so does football!

We are excited to be playing our 11th season of football since starting our Division III program, and this promises to be a great year for the Tigers under Head Coach Mark Sartain. This media guide gives facts and figures about the men who play and coach, but we also hope that you’ll be able to see their hearts as they play the game. We hope you’ll notice their character as well as their competitive drive. And, we hope that you know they are as committed to academic pursuits as they are to winning on the field. At East Texas Baptist University our student athletes are STUDENT athletes. These men are not playing for a scholarship, but for the love of the game. And, we play football because we believe it contributes to the educational mission of the University. These students are learning not just in the classrooms, but in team meetings, through diligent practice, by lifting weights and conditioning their bodies, in one-on-one conversations with coaches and fellow players, and on the gridiron. As a University, we’re also committed to the truth found in Scripture that reminds us, “physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8. This football team is being fit for success in this life and the life to come. That, to me, is a good reason to cheer them on.

GO TIGERS!

2010 EAST TEXAS BAPTIST UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL

EAST TEXAS BAPTIST UNIVERSITY Academic instruction at East Texas Baptist University began in 1917 with the inaugural session of a two-year institution known as College of Marshall. The campaign to launch the college had begun in 1911 and was led by William Thomas Tardy, pastor of Marshall’s First Baptist Church. Tardy negotiated the purchase of 100 acres of the original K. M. Van Zandt family plantation for $25,000. Keeping 50 of the 100 acres on Van Zandt Hill in northwest Marshall, the college subdivided and sold the remaining property. Marshall’s citizens subscribed another $70,000, and the Baptist General Convention of Texas assumed control of the college, appropriating $40,000 for buildings and furnishings. The trustees applied for and received a charter from the State of Texas in 1912, and Thurman C. Gardner, an early day Baptist Training Union leader, became the first president in 1913. For the first building, Marshall Hall, contractors broke ground on July 5, 1915. Of neoclassical architecture and completed in 1916, Marshall Hall crowned the highest point in Harrison County. The robust building was a self-contained educational facility with a ground floor gymnasium, main floor administrative offices, laboratories, and library, third floor classrooms, and a chapel/theatre on the top floor. The first freshman class registered in 1917 under President Henry Eugene Watters (1916-1918). The college boasted a teaching faculty of nine members. By the aca-

demic year 191819, some 300 students were enrolled in either a junior college or an academy curriculum. With World War I raging, a student cavalry unit drilled regularly on the college grounds. New dormitories soon encircled the classic campus quadrangle. In 1924, Dr. Franklin S. Groner, the Secretary of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, conveyed the Baptists’ commitment to assume the college debt if the Marshall Chamber of Commerce would supply $12,500 annually for five years, enabling it to remain open. Leading the college during the trying days of The Great Depression, Dr. Franklin Groner (1928-42) assumed the presidency and instituted a permanent endowment program. In 1935, an additional 43 acres were purchased, including the land and buildings of the St. Joseph’s Boys Industrial Orphanage, some of which was converted to men’s housing. In 1938, Baptist layman and builder Fred Hale broke ground for Laura Groner Hall, a modern residence hall for women. A reduced replica of Mt. Vernon, the stunning structure stood complete in 1940, its austere construction having cost only $10,500. World War II robbed the campus of its men and resources. By 1943, only 137 students remained. In 1944, the trustees, making perhaps the most important decision in the institution’s history, asked the Baptist General Convention of Texas to elevate the college to four-year status and to change the name to East Texas Baptist College. A former pastor of First Baptist Church, Midland, Texas, Dr. Harvey Daniel Bruce (1942-1960), the college’s ninth president, oversaw a vigorous postwar enrollment and building boom. Veterans arrived on campus,

EAST TEXAS BAPTIST UNIVERSITY many bringing their families, and enrollment briefly surpassed 800. Prefabricated war surplus family housing was erected on the campus perimeter. The college added Scarborough Chapel in 1948, which was built in the neo-Gothic style. Also added were Feagin Hall, a new men’s residence facility; a cafeteria and student center; and additions to the women’s residence hall, which was renamed for Merle Bruce, wife of the college president. Two ornate, neo-classical buildings were added in the 1950s, Sanderson Hall (now Craig Hall) to house the laboratory sciences departments, and Harvey Daniel Bruce Hall as the new library/administrative complex. Keys Gymnasium was built in 1960. In 1961 a new women’s residence hall, named after Evelyn Linebery, with its long portico and roomy plantation-style architecture, was completed. Dr. Bruce labored to establish a liberal arts tradition, along with strong degree programs in Bible and religion. His administration’s crowning achievement came in 1957 when the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted accreditation to East Texas Baptist College. Under Dr. Howard C. Bennett as president (1960-76), the academic program established enduring credibility. Dr. Bennett, the former pastor of First Baptist Church, Kilgore, oversaw construction of the new Howard C. Bennett Student Center in 1973. Dr. Jerry Dawson (197685) 85), who had been Graduate Dean at Southwest Texas State University, became the first professional educator to lead the college. By 1982, the postwar “baby boom” peaked and enrollment stood at 920 students. A spacious new president’s home replaced the stately residence that Drs. Bruce and Bennett had occupied. After the opening of the Mamye Jarrett Library in 1979, H. D. Bruce Hall became available for the Religion and Teacher Education departments. Married students occupied several new brick housing units. Charles Fry Hall for Men was opened. As age claimed some of the original college buildings, the older men’s dormitory, buildings of the old orphanage, and various frame and prefabricated struc-

tures were dismantled during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1984 the University Charter revision changed the institutional name to East Texas Baptist University. However, by 1985, enrollment gains had eroded. During the interim presidency of Dr. Harvey Lewis (1985-86), the University met various deferred maintenance and operating needs. The former president of two other Baptist institutions from 1961 to 1986, Dr. Robert Craig (1986-1992) launched a building program of unprecedented proportions, including the Fred Hale Business Building in 1988-89. Other subsequent construction projects were the Jenna Guest Music Building, the Louise Rogers Spiritual Life Center, now known as the Ornelas Spiritual Life Center; major additions to the Bennett Student Center, construction of the Clifford Nelson Murphy Science Hall, and the Mabee Housing Complex. The untimely death of Dr. Craig in March 1992, only two months prior to his announced retirement, was followed by the leadership of Dr. Bob E. Riley (1992-Present), who had been President of the Howard County Junior College District in Big Spring, Texas. Under Dr. Riley, the University experienced record student enrollments. The campus continued to develop under President Riley’s leadership with the 1995 completion of the Dean Healthplex and Ornelas Gymnasium. Fall 1996 found the opening of The Joseph and Louise Ornelas Residential Complex and the renovation of Marshall Hall, which was completed in 1997. Meadows Hall, which houses the Murphy Instructional Technology Center and the Department of Mathematics was renovated and occupied beginning with the fall semester of 1999. The University Apartments opened in fall 2002, and the renovation of Scarborough Chapel into Scarborough Hall was complete in January 2004. Dr. Riley completed his 17th year at ETBU in 2008-09 after having announced his retirement in May of 2008. Dr. Dub Oliver was named President-elect of ETBU in the fall of 2008 and assumed the office officially on June 1, 2009.

Entering his 14th year as Director of Athletics at East Texas Baptist University, Kent Reeves has presided over the Tigers’ transformation into a solid member of the NCAA Division III ranks. Reeves, who remains the winningest coach in two athletics programs at ETBU, originally stepped down as women’s basketball coach in 1997 to assume full-time duties as athletic director. He also was named the university’s first softball coach that year and laid the foundation for a program that has become one of the best in the nation annually. Under Reeves’ guidance as AD the department has grown from just five sports in 1997 to 10 in 2010, with men’s and women’s tennis set to be added in the fall of 2011. ETBU athletics programs have consistently competed for championships in the American Southwest Conference, with nine conference titles and 17 ASC division titles since joining the Division III ranks in 199899. ETBU teams have combined to make 41 conference tournament appearances since 1998, and the Tiger softball program claimed the university’s first NCAA national championship last spring. Facility upgrades have also been a staple of Reeves’ time as athletic director. Since 1997, ETBU has added new playing facilities for softball, football and soccer. Various upgrades and improvements have been added to each athletics program on campus over the last 10 years. Reeves arrived at ETBU as women’s basketball coach in 1987. When he decided to step down as basketball coach following the 1996-97 season, Reeves had directed the lady Tigers to an average of 20 wins per season in his 10 years as coach. He finished with 206 wins and his teams made nine NAIA postseason appearances. As softball coach from 1998-2000, Reeves built the program from scratch and culminated with the program’s first ASC championship in 2000. He assumed AD-only duties after that season but returned to the dugout in a pinch for the 2004 season. That year, the Tigers posted a program-record 41 wins. He then took another year off before returning for the 2006-07 seasons, finishing with a program-record 183 wins over six seasons. Reeves is active in the Marshall community, serving in the Marshall Lions Club as well as being a deacon at Central Baptist Church. He and his wife Mary Beth have two daughters: Kendra, who is married to Austin Skipworth, and Taylor, a recent graduate of Baylor University.

ETBU FOOTBALL FACILITIES

Ornelas Stadium Ornelas Stadium provides ETBU with one of the top game-day facilities in all of NCAA Division III football. Opened just in time for ETBU’s return to intercollegiate football in 2000, Ornelas Stadium stands as one of the shining landmarks on the north end of the ETBU campus. The Ornelas family of Tyler provided the gift which made the stadium possible. The facility was constructed with lightning speed beginning soon after ETBU announced late in 1998 it was bringing back its football program following a 50-year absence in time for the 2000 season. Beginning in December of 1999, the stadium was literally carved out of the East Texas earth, surrounded by the area’s trademark pine trees. As part of the stadium’s unique features, the field is surrounded by a bowl-shaped design that includes a raised grandstand above ground level. On both sides of the grandstand are to sloped hillsides that accomodate fans in lawn chairs, blankets, etc., for a comfortable,

relaxing game-day experience. The Tigers enter the field from the east side of Carlile-Howell Field House, with a path to the field winding through fans and students gathered in the south end zone. Students gather on game day in the south end zone and also take advantage of grassy areas to be as close to the field as possible, putting the crowd up close to the action and further enhancing the college football atmosphere. At full seating capacity, Ornelas Stadium has a listed capacity of 3,000, with a seating capacity of just over 2,000 in the grandstand bleachers. There are 22 seats designated for handicapped seating, and a section of 278 railback seats sits just below the two-story press box with a great view from the 50-yard line. With standing room only and general admission access to the hillsides and end zone areas, the Tigers can play in front of well over 3,000 fans. Lights were added to the facility for the 2009 season, providing the opportunity for ETBU to play its home games at night as well as conduct night practices to give the players optimum class time during the day.

Carlile-Howell Football Complex As part of the project that included the construction of Ornelas Stadium, the former Carlile-Howell Hall was renovated to become ETBU’s football fieldhouse. The facility includes offices, a meeting/conference area for coaches, two locker rooms, an equipment room, a training room and a weight room. The renovation of the fieldhouse took first priority over the construction of Ornelas Stadium, actually, during plans for both to be ready in time for the 2000 football season. The result of the fieldhouse project includes a large foyer area which serves as a welcoming place for Tiger fans. There are two large offices for assistant coaches -- one for offense, one for defense -- as well as an office for the program’s recruiting coordinator. The defensive coordinator also has a private office. The main football office is located just inside the front door of the facility, and it is connected to a head coach’s office/suite. The coaches also have a private locker room in the facility as well. Tiger coaches conduct game-planning sessions and meetings inside a large conference room just off the main foyer. On the other side of the foyer is a weight room that has undergone a major renovation the last two years, with new equipment and a sound system installed. The Tigers dress in a large locker room facility on the east side of the building, while visitors have a separate dressing room on

the west side. ETBU’s athletic training department has a large training room just inside the west entrance to the building, which includes an office for the athletic trainer. The north end of the building contains a large equipment/storage room, which also includes washer and dryer units. The facility has convenient access to both the stadium and practice fields, which are located behind the building. The practice fields are located to the east of Ornelas Stadium, sandwiched between the stadium and a manmade lake that was also part of the construction project.

SOFTBALL

ETBU’s “House of Blues” has been home to the university’s basketball and volleyball programs since 1995, when the facility was constructed with a gift from the Ornelas family of Tyler, Texas. As part of the complex that includes Ornelas Gym, the Dean Healthplex houses state-of-the-art equipment for physical fitness such as treadmills, stationary bicycles, stairmasters and both free and machine weightlifting stations, along with four racquetball courts. Ornelas Gym has three levels of seating extending to the gym floor, with ETBU students allowed on the floor bleachers across from the ETBU bench, to give the home fans a nice, up-close view of the action.

Taylor Field is the home to ETBU’s softball program, which marched to the 2010 NCAA Division III national championship. The Tigers have had an unprecedented run of consistency in the ASC in softball, with 11 straight trips to the conference postseason tournament. During those 11 years ETBU has won five conference championships and six ASC East Division titles. The facility began as a give from Earl and Louise Taylor and was constructed in time for ETBU’s first season of softball in 1998. The facility was upgraded in 2005 with a gift from Welby C. Edwards, with installation of a new two-story pressbox that also included a Lady Tiger locker room, brick dugouts and landscaping.

Woods Field has been home to ETBU’s baseball program since its inception back in the mid-1960s, and the facility has received several upgrades over the years with more still to come. The latest of the upgrades was the installation of lights just prior to the 2008 season that allowed for the first nighttime baseball in the history of the program. The addition of lights was made possible by a gift from Mr. J. Lloyd Woods of Tenaha, with the first night game being played on Feb. 8, 2008. Since head coach Sam Blackmon arrived to the program prior to the 2007 season, upgrades to the park include remodeling of the Tiger bullpen with construction and landscaping, as well as additions and improvements to the outdoor batting cages.

ETBU’s soccer complex was christened Cornish Field in the fall of 2007 after having served as the home for the university’s soccer programs since 2002. Improvements to the facility in 2008, made possible by a gift from Hal and Joyce Cornish, included installation of permanent bleacher seating, concrete walkways, a retaining wall that allows fans to bring their own lawn chairs to enjoy the games, and a wrought-iron decorative fence on the south side of the field. The entrance was also bricked with a decorative archway bearing the new name of the facility. Lights were added in 2005 by Mr. Randy Adair in honor of his daughter, Brooke, who played four years at ETBU from 2000-03.

COACHING STAFF Mark Sartain

Head Coach BB.A., Austin College M.E., Austin College Phone: 903-923903-923-2188 E-Mail: msartain@etbu.e msartain@etbu.edu Mark Sartain was named just the second head coach in the history of East Texas Baptist University’s modern-day football program on Dec. 13, 2006. Under Sartain’s guidance the last three years the Tigers have posted a 13-17 overall record that included back-to-back five-win seasons in 2007 and 2008. The team slipped to a 3-7 finish in 2009 but loses just 13 seniors and restocks the roster from a junior varsity team that went 6-3 last season. Recruiting and facility upgrade has been a key theme in Coach Sartain’s efforts to rebuild the program, which finished 3-7 in the season prior to his arrival. The Tigers’ first season under the new coach saw ETBU field a starting two-deep lineup loaded with new freshmen and sophomores, and that 2007 squad finished with a 5-5 mark and began American Southwest Conference play with a four-game win streak. The program played its first full, nine-game season with a junior varsity program last fall, with the Tiger JV playing nine games. ETBU has fielded a JV in years past but had never played near the equivalent of a full season schedule until 2009. Included in last season’s victory total for the JV -- comprised mainly of true freshmen -- were wins over ASC rivals Louisiana College, Hardin-Simmons and Mississippi College. Sartain spearheaded an effort to refurbish ETBU’s weight room in the Carlile-Howell Fieldhouse before he ever coached a game with the Tigers. The workout facility is now up-to-date and modernized. The program also played its first-ever home games at night last season, with the addition of lights to Ornelas Stadium and the practice facility adjacent to the stadium. Sartain arrived at ETBU with a long history of success in the East Texas coaching ranks, both at the high school and junior college levels as a head coach. With a coaching career that spans over a quarter-century, Sartain has developed a wealth of contacts among the coaching community that has been a tremendous asset in ETBU’s recruiting efforts. Under his direction the last three years the Tigers have implemented a series of spring coaching clinics, “Monday Night Football,” in which area high school coaches meet and share ideas and philosophies on Monday nights in the spring. The Tigers have also focused on off-the-field contributions to the surrounding community during Sartain’s time as head coach. These activities included a summer mission trip to Croatia in the summer of 2008 in which a group of ETBU football players and coaches, including Sartain, visited war-torn Croatia and helped rebuild a church among other various mission activities. A summer mission trip to England got as far as Heathrow Airport before the ETBU players and coaches on the trip were detained at the airport due to a visa mishap that resulted in the team having to

turn around and fly home after a long wait. The experience has not deterred the ETBU football team, however; another mission trip has been planned this summer for Alaska. ETBU players have also participated in youth mentoring programs while also aiding local efforts by Habitat for Humanity. Sartain also began youth summer football camps at ETBU, with Tiger coaches and players working with area youth during a week-long camp at Ornelas Stadium. Sartain has also put the Tigers on the national map in terms of the team’s scheduling. ETBU scheduled traditional Division III powerhouse St. John’s in Minnesota to open the 2008 season and later faced Azusa Pacific, located in Azusa, Calif., in the ninth game of the season. In 2009, ETBU played its first all-Division III schedule with nonconference games at home against Wisconsin-La Crosse to open the season followed by a road game back to the West Coast to face Redlands. The Tigers will once again play those two non-conference foes as part of another all-DIII schedule in 2010. Prior to accepting the ETBU head coaching position, Sartain spent the previous four seasons as head coach at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas. He guided the Cardinals to the Southwest Junior College Football Conference (SWJCFC) championship in 2005. It was Sartain’s second stint on staff at Trinity Valley, having served as offensive coordinator with the program from 1991-94. The 1994 season culminated with TVCC going 12-0 and winning the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championship. A native of Van Al-

2010 EAST TEXAS BAPTIST UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL

COACHING STAFF styne, Texas, Sartain has been a head coach at some level for 18 years, beginning with his first head coaching job at Cross Roads High School, in Athens, in 1986. In fact, of his 24 seasons as a football coach, Sartain has been either a head coach or coordinator in 23 of them. He has spent every year of his career coaching in East Texas, from Athens to Eustace to White Oak to Marshall. But before coming to ETBU, Sartain had been a collegiate head coach just four years, and that was at the junior college level. But his success at Trinity Valley on the offensive side of the ball was very attractive for ETBU officials when the Tiger head coaching position opened up following a 3-7 mark in 2006. Sartain’s offenses at Trinity Valley were consistently among the best in the nation, especially when he was coordinator in the early 1990s. The Cardinals ranked in the top 10 nationally in total offense and also set a conference record in 1994, with 450 points in just 12 games. In his four years as offensive coordinator at TVCC, Sartain coached three Cardinal quarterbacks to All-America honors. During his years as offensive coordinator at TVCC, the Cardinals were a combined 30-12-2 with an unbeaten national championship season in 1994. A dozen players off those teams have either played or continue to play in the NFL, including cornerback Al Harris of the Green Bay Packers and kicker Matt Bryant of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Sartain left his coordinator position at Trinity Valley in 1995 to take over as head coach at White Oak High School in White Oak, Texas. In his eight seasons there as athletic director/ head coach with the Roughnecks, Sartain’s teams made the playoffs three times and won the school’s first district

football championship in 18 years. As AD, Sartain implemented White Oak’s athletic booster club while also establishing the annual “Maroon Madness” midnight pep rally to generate community enthusiasm and usher in the new school year and fooball season. White Oak generated an increase in football program participation of more than 80 percent and an overall athletic program participation increase of 40 percent under Coach Sartain’s watch. Sartain also implemented girls softball, girls powerlifting, cross country and track at White Oak, and the Roughnecks won 15 district championships in seven different sports in his time as athletic director. He returned to Trinity Valley prior to the 2003 season to accept the Cardinals’ head coaching position. In his four seasons as head coach, TVCC went 17-23, which included a 9-3 mark in 2005 that saw the Cardinals win the conference championship and finish No. 7 in the national JUCO rankings. Overall in his eight seasons as either offensive coordinator or head coach at Trinity Valley, the Cardinals posted a 47-35-2 record with a national championship with Sartain on staff. In his last two seasons at TVCC, the Cardinals had 16 players sign Division I scholarships with programs such as Arkansas, Tennesee, Texas A&M, Iowa State, Washington State, New Mexico, Memphis, Hawaii, Bowling Green and Tulsa. Of those 16, only two had been original Division I signees out of high school. Sartain began his coaching career after his college playing days ended at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. As a player he was a starter on the Kangaroos’ 1981 NAIA Division II national championship team and finished as a two-time Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) all-conference nose tackle. A serious knee injury ended his playing career, but Sartain went on and received a B.A. in Physical Education and History in 1982. A year later he completed work on a masters in Secondary Education from Austin College. He entered the coaching field in 1984 as defensive line coach at Athens High School, where he also served as junior varsity head coach. Sartain also was Athens’ powerlifting

coach from 1983-86, leading a group that finished as regional champions three times and was state runnerup in 1985. In just his second season on staff at Athens, Sartain was promoted to offensive coordinator. While on staff at Athens, Sartain saw the Hornets accomplish their first winning season in five years in 1984 with a 6-2-2 finish and second-place district finish in 1985. He was named head coach at Cross Roads High School in 1986, just three years removed from college. Sartain led the program there to its first non-losing season (5-5) and first winning season (6-2-2) in the school’s history. In fact, in the six years prior to his arrival, Cross Roads won a total of five games at the Class A level before winning five in Sartain’s first season as coach in ‘86. Cross Roads went 6-4 in 1988 and finished as district runnerup, but the team missed the playoffs after missing out on a district tiebreaker. Sartain left Cross Roads in 1989 to become head coach at Eustace High School in 1989. After two seasons with the Bulldogs, he entered the collegiate coaching ranks with his first stint at Trinity Valley in 1991. His life is in no means dedicated solely to football, despite his accomplishments. Coach Sartain is very active away from the field, enjoying building rustic furniture as well as hunting. He also enjoys working out and playing racquetball as time allows. He also has a deep passion for music, as well as a passion for serving Christ. Sartain has spent a bi-vocational career as minister of music, spending eight years as worship leader at Calvary Baptist Church in Longview, Texas, while also coaching at White Oak. He has performed as lead singer in a praise and worship band while also continuing to fill in as worship leader for area congregations on an interim basis. Mark and his wife, Gina, are members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Marshall and live in Harleton, Texas, just a few minutes drive away from the ETBU campus. They have two adult children, Marshall and Melody, both of whom are married, and one grand-daughter, Jillian.

Corey Chancellor

Assistant Head Coach/ Defensive Coordinator B.S,E, Texas A&M-Commerce Phone: 903-923-2199 E-Mail: cchancellor@etbu.edu Corey Chancellor was the defensive coordinator under Mark Sartain at Trinity Valley Community College prior to joining Sartain at ETBU in the offseason following the 2006 football season. In three seasons under Chancellor, the ETBU defense has fielded a competitive unit that for the most part has ranked among some of the top units in the American Southwest Conference. The Tigers have not ranked lower than fourth in the ASC in total defense, iincluding the 2009 season that saw ETBU finish fourth in the nineteam league while allowing just over 356 yards per game. ETBU was third in the league in total defense in 2008, allowing 335 yards per game. The Tigers were ranked second in the conference against the run, giving up just 112 yards per game against opposing running games. Chancellor has been the program’s assistant head coach since arriving in January of 2007. He also coaches the defensive backfield. Sartain and Chancellor go all the way back to the days when Chancellor was a player at Athens High School in Athens, Texas, where Sartain was a coach in the late 1980s. From Athens, Chancellor went on to earn an Associate of Arts degree in Kinesiology at Trinity Valley Community College in 1989. He then received a B.S.E. in Kinesiology and Health Education from Texas A&M-Commerce in 1995. Prior to earning his bachelor’s degree, Chancellor worked a career in law enforcement as a police officer in Garland, Texas from 1989-93. He graduated from the Garland Police Academy in 1989 and worked as an officer in the department’s narcotics unit as well as being a member of the S.W.A.T. team. He was also a member of the department’s Honor Guard. He entered the coaching field with assistant coaching positions at Terrell High School in Terrell, Texas, and at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas. Chancellor coached defensive backs at Terrell and coached wide receivers during his time at Wilmer-Hutchins. From 2000-01, Chancellor coached defensive ends at Jacksonville High School in Jackonsville, Texas. He then moved on to coach running backs at Houston’s Alief Hastings High School from 2001-04. Chancellor returned to Trinity Valley as a coach in 2004, joining again with Sartain who had become head coach there in 2003. As defensive coordinator with the Cardinals, Chancellor’s defenses were consistently ranked in the top tier in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference. The Cardinals finished No. 3 in total defense in 2004, and the unit helped Trinity Valley to a 2005 NJCAA Region XIV championship and final No. 7 national ranking in 2005. In his last season as coordinator at TVCC, Chancellor’s defense produced 10 players who signed with Division I or Division II programs. Three of those players -- safeties Nevin McKenzie (Tennessee) and Zach Wagoner (Midwestern State) and cornerback Arseel Shakoor (West Texas A&M) were members of the secondary unit coached directly by Chancellor.

Zac Bryant

Offensive Coordinator/ Recruiting Coordinator B.S,E, Southwestern Oklahoma State M.S., University of Texas-Tyler Phone: 903-923903-923-2202 E-Mail: zbryant@etbu.edu The Tigers are turning offensive coordinator duties over to fourth-year offensive line coach Zac Bryant, whose group has put East Texas Baptist into the top level of rushing offenses since the 2007 season. Head coach Mark Sartain brought Bryant to his first Tiger staff in 2007, after Bryant had worked two seasons as offensive line coach at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas. TJC was a rival of Trinity Valley Community College, where Sartain was head coach prior to coming to ETBU. “My expectation for the offense is production,” says Bryant. “Points, yards, time of possession, ball security...these are ways we measure production. This is nothing new or unique to ETBU. (But) there can be no in-between or justification. Our job is to move the football with consistency and score. That is the expectation.” Bryant joined the ETBU staff early in the spring of 2007, as part of Sartain’s first coaching staff after taking over the program in December of 2006. Under his direction the ETBU offensive line has paved the way for Tiger running backs to churn out an average of 157 yards per game on the ground over the last three seasons, including a 190.2-yards per game average in 2009 that had the Tigers ranked third overall in the American Southwest Conference. The Tigers’ rushing average per game has increased every year of Bryant’s tenure on staff, from an average of just 106.5 yards per game in 2007 to 174.0 in 2008 to last season’s 190.2. ETBU jumped from seventh in the conference in 2007 to fourth in the league in rushing average per game in 2008. In each of the last two seasons, the Tiger offensive line has had three members earn All-ASC recognition at the end of the season. Working behind the Bryant-coached line, ETBU has had two running backs -- Corey George and Jair Stover -- earn firstteam All-ASC recognition at various times over the last three years. Bryant came to ETBU in 2007 with three years of experience coaching at the collegiate level. He was offensive line coach at TJC in 2005 and 2006 following a one-year stint on staff at Texas A&M-Commerce in 2004. He immediately entered the coaching field after earning his B.S.E. in Heath and Physical Education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Okla., where he was an All-Lone Star Conference offensive lineman in 2002-03 and also team captain for the Bulldogs. Coach Bryant earned a Masters in Health and Kinesiology from the University of Texas at Tyler. He is a native of Edmond, Okla., where he attended Santa Fe High School. He and his wife, Holli, have one son, Collier.
