The Possibility of an Absolute ArchitectureArchitecture is a Narrative Generator

Using the method of architectural translation, I seek to convey the conceptualization and mood of Song poetry through architecture. Research and case study analysis shows that “architectural translation” can be accomplished through symbols, shapes, architectural elements, programs, and so on. Song poetry reflects a simplification of content and mood, it tells stories and expresses feelings by piling up words and sentences. I analyzed one Song poem entitled, “Song of Divination” ( 卜 算 子 ) written by Su Shi. I then developed a set of architectural vocabulary, looking for a specific site that resembles a similar feeling, style of living, and organizational structure.

The Unfinished City

16

Each man bears in his mind a city made only of differences, a city without figures and without form, and the individual cities fill it up (“Invisible Cities”) In order to write things on the already used parchment paper, the original word had to be scraped off first. However the inscribed text could not be completely erased. Over time, parchment papers accumulated piles of multiple versions of the overwritten text. I think that the city is just like that parchment paper – it is constantly overwritten by people. In its unfinished state, it continuously records the traces of previous life. If we could piece together different versions of the city, different time periods, and different fields which have been overwritten over and over again, we could construct a city that no one has ever reached yet – an Unfinished City.

The feeling after going 110 km/h

A national highway is a public space that we all feel familiar with but often ignore it as such. Highways have become an independent world because of their own rules. When one drives at the speed of 110 km/h, the pressure is on – be it on a driver or the environment. In this state, we don’t feel much. All common situations and behaviors that happen on the streets rarely happen here. When we are in this high-speed box, we feel the outside world only through our small windows. The only exception is when we stop at the socalled “service areas” that are scattered all around the highway. But today most service areas have become overly commercialized. They are packed with goods and are situated in renovated spaces or old buildings, at the closed edges. The true purpose of the service area should be providing people with a space to rest, with an opportunity to relax and feel free again. I want to find this kind of place.

Improving Nanjichang with a “comma”

24

A “comma”(,) represents a public space that is aimed at improving the local environment, changing people's lifestyle, and introducing a short pause to their lives. Nanjichang was once a highly praised public housing project that over time has become a disadvantaged community. In recent years a glimmer of hope emerged for this community as the municipal government has started to actively pursue urban renewal in the area. However it will take at least 10 years before any real construction work can start taking place: first all residents need to sign consent forms, renovation plans need to be confirmed, and relocation of residents needs to be completed. But how about all the residents who have to live in this messy and dangerous housing until its renewal? My graduation project is based on the idea of placing the “comma” on the existing old houses and the metal roof of the night market. There are three following problem of Nanjichang that I address: 1. Many night market vendors have illegal stalls attached to the residential homes. Some of their gas barrels are blocking fire escapes, which need to be removed for fire safety concerns. 2. 45.86% of households are either senior citizens, low-income families, or people with physical and mental disabilities. However there is no adequate amount of public space and facilities allocated for these people. 3. Due to highly complex property rights and different expectations between the government and the tenants, it is extremely difficult to implement urban redevelopment projects. We don’t need to implement a major renewal project to create new public spaces that could improve the life of residents. The cleanliness and safety issues of the night market also can be solved. This would increase the quality of life of locals until the old buildings are finally demolished.

The Shape Of Smell

28

In the current society, the sense of smell is often ignored. In most urban planning, architectural design, and interior design projects, visual aspects occupy a dominant position, whilst smell is rarely discussed. We seldom design anything for the spatial experience of smell. I believe that the sense of smell can be used to enhance the spatial experience. When the Mazu Pilgrimage is over, Mazu is out of sight and out of hearing. However, what remains is a weak smell lingering in the site where the Pilgrimage has just taken place. For this project, I used olfaction to create a new form of the Mazu Pilgrimage experience without the Pilgrimage. This detour reflects daily and quiet practice of self-cultivation. By experiencing the smell of the Mazu Pilgrimage without the Pilgrimage people can temporarily escape the pressures of their daily lives and engage in self-reflection. They can embrace their inner self through the Pilgrimage experience.

32

How to experience music in daily life? How to get close to it? How to feel it? In today's society, the omnipresence of music allows people to hear music anytime and anywhere. However it is precisely because music is now so common in our lives that people’s feelings and awareness of music has faded away. So how can music be recreated in people’s daily life? I try to reconstruct the space of the musical experience by placing musical behavior in those sites where everyday behaviors occur.

36

All buildings in the city can be differentiated based on their functionality – some are used for business, some for residential purposes. Buildings define districts while walls define spaces. Human behaviors define the function of spaces since daily life and architecture are inseparable. I attempt to blur the definitions of walls, boundaries and heights in buildings to render undefined spaces so that those spaces could have infinite functions when people meet and interact through architecture.

Where is Hong Kong’s sea? Since the British colonial rule, the development of Hong Kong has largely relied on land reclamation and the leveling of the hills. During the later stages of the city expansion, special structures for heavy transport at the northern waterfront were created alongside with the construction of a series of retaining walls and man-made slopes at the southern hills. Like invisible walls, they concentrate activities in one place and constraint the movement of pedestrians, thus diminishing the original intimate relationship between the city and nature. This work aims to reimagine Hong Kong as a seascape, proposing the model for the art museum to display local art and seascape. In this museum, even if there were no art pieces on display, you could always see the sea, the best piece of art created on this earth.

In traditional Chinese culture, a lion is seen as a divine beast. Subsequently, a Lion Dance is commonly featured in traditional Chinese festivals and celebrations, as it is believed to bring good luck and exorcise evil spirits. However among the younger generation, it is commonly regarded as an old-fashioned tradition. Adhering to the spirit of traditional culture and modern advancements, we drew inspiration from Western origami art, taking the most representative symbol of the Lion Dance – the lion's head – and reproducing it in different lines, surfaces, volumes and geometric shapes. We sought to bring out the beauty of the Eastern culture combining it with the Western aesthetics. In this way, a new soul is injected into an ordinary paper while also representing the long history of the Lion Dance culture and its blessings. We hope to tell the story of the Chinese people through our designs. Our "Paper Lion" transfers lion dance practices into an innovative paper craft, which represents the uniqueness of the Chinese culture. Inspired by different lines, surfaces, and shapes of a three-dimensional origami, the head of the lion was constructed using multiple sheets of white paper to show the beauty and purity of the Lion Dance.

Stress has become a common problem in our daily lives. Numerous people suffer from mental breakdowns caused by stress. In an attempt to help our clients to relieve their stress and anxieties, we designed an essential oil diffuser and several diffuser accessories including a bracelet, a necklace, and earrings. There are three kinds of codes attached to the base of the diffuser, including QR code, Morse code, and Braille. The ability to encode and decode messages using different codes, allows our clients to create their own coded language. This makes our product more than just a diffuser. It also becomes a special tool for transmitting sweet and positive messages.

Long before the invention of the script, knotting was known as an important way for people to communicate and convey messages. Chinese knotting, a traditional decorative handicraft, is a form of Chinese folk art, designed to send blessings to others. Chinese knots are rich in symbolic meaning. We maintained the traditions of Chinese knotting techniques in our designs, whilst also making them more accessible and understandable for a non-Chinese audience. Our main materials were paper and cord. We started from making various kinds of knots, and then from the basics moved toward more complex shapes. Our designs are made from a single cord, transformed into a variety of shapes. Through the combination of sense and sensibility, we sought to convey the beauty of spiritual connections between people. We believe that graphic designs can be more than plain two-dimensional works. Instead, they can be expressed in a more complex three-dimensional form. Through the power of our designs, we – OOOOOO STUDIO – hope to encourage everyone to experience the joy of weaving and use knots to send their sincere blessings to family and friends.

The title of the project refers to the commissioned stores of foreign goods that operated in Keelung from 1950 to 1980. It is through these stores that Taiwanese society could follow the world fashion trends. Following the opening of trade with the world, many of these stores were closed or demolished. We created a new brand – "VETERAIN" – to represent the remaining stores, and through the power of design, aim to maintain and promote their spirit and culture. Our designs fall into two categories: customized cultural and creative products and promotional products. Our customized products are based on the industry’s culture, which also represents the established trust relationship between clients and businesses. The customized products that we launched include clasp frames, socks and scarves. Promotional products include AR postcards, newspapers, and an APP. The AR postcards can be presented through virtual interaction and animation, which makes history more accessible to the public. The stories of the early commissioned stores are featured on the front and those of the emerging stores on the back. We have displayed our designs in a small exhibition in the Guangyi business district in Keelung.

We used kitchen oil leftovers to make crayons. Through a workshop and internet, we explained our method to the public and educated the public on the recycling of the kitchen oil. Youlei_Youlei originated in a pursuit of eco-friendly solutions through design. We used the recycled kitchen oil to make crayons. We also used the recycled paper cups to make the packaging of crayons, thus reducing the burden on the Earth. The eco-friendly crayons that we make are different from the rest on the market. They are designed in several different shapes. Their two-color design also makes it easier for consumers to use. Youlei_Youlei combines two core principles of “creativity” and "sustainable development". We use these crayons to create something beautiful on the paper as well as to maintain all the beauty of the Earth.

We found out that there are many art supplies which are not user friendly for visually impaired people. This considerably reduces the motivation for the visually impaired people to take part in the artistic creation process, which, we felt, was a real pity. This is how Tactile Colors was born. Tactile Colors combines six primary colors with different tactile sensations to create a combination of color and touch. The use of sensory stimulation allows the visually impaired people to understand the concept of color easier, in addition to increasing their willingness to learn more about the art of painting.

Xiao Long Bao

We incorporated Taiwan's famous snack Xiao Long Bao (steamed bun) into the design of reusable bags. Apart from advocating a sustainable living, it also helps to promote Taiwan for tourists. This bag is undoubtedly the best gift choice for foreign friends! The Xiao Long Bao bag does not only contain Taiwanese characteristics, but it is also very different from other more conventional souvenirs that can only be attached to the refrigerator or placed on the shelf for display. In addition to its beautiful appearance, it is also a practical multi-functional canvas bag. Caring about the environment and the Earth can be interesting, but it’s also very practical! Considering the government's plastic waste restriction policies, it has now become common for people to carry their own environmentally friendly shopping bags. Unlike other ordinary canvas bags on the market, our bag has an anti-stain and waterproof coating. This is a heavy-duty bag, which can be used for grocery shopping and general use. With the adjustable length of the straps it can also be carried on the back or over the shoulder.

Paper Paper originated from the concept of STEAM Education, which is aimed at developing logical thinking and aesthetic appreciation among children aged 3-9. Through the process of assembling a corrugated cardboard into a musical instrument children cultivate independent thinking, 3-dimensional construction, and sensory acuity skills. The use of the corrugated cardboard as the main construction material also raises environmental awareness among children. Paper Paper comes in 3 versions, including a monocolored version, coloring version, and a multicolored version. Children can choose their preferred type. In addition, they can further unleash their creativity by freely drawing on their cardboards without any limitations.

CAT TREE

Pets have become important members of our families. Cat jumping platforms currently available on the market are practical and beautiful, but they lack in terms of facilitating the emotional connection between people and their pets. Based on the principles of modular design, we have designed a product that can enhance this connection whilst also being functional as it can be adjusted according to the specific needs. CAT TREE is a smart cat jumping platform. In addition to the basic cat jumping platform functions, it also incorporates laser diode and mobile APP, so that the owner could have a more intimate interaction with their pets. The shape of the platform is designed in accordance with the principles of organic structures, which means it can be assembled in various ways. The unlimited freedom to adjust the platform according to individual preferences makes CAT TREE a must have item in every home.

Nowadays elders spend most of their time at home alone as other family members are absent due to work or school commitments. Being alone for a long time may result in negative thoughts and feelings of isolation from family and society. By designing an indoor entertainment MOAVE for the elderly people we hope to make them feel at ease and provide new ways to reconnect with their family. MOAVE has two functions. First, it can be used as an indoor gateball, which in addition to exercising also requires some brain work. Second, MOAVE can also be used as a walking trail. Special bumps on the mat help to cure skin irritations and increase blood circulation. We hope that MOAVE will not only help to improve both physical and mental health of the elderly, but will also bring back joy to their lives.

Circular consists of five pieces of home-based fitness devices designed for young women. We reformed the shapes of traditional sports equipment, redefining their cold metallic image. We used soft and round wavy bright-colored elements to create a sense of freshness and to turn sports equipment into a highlight of the living place. Even a fitness novice could use our equipment without any difficulty. Our dumbbells also incorporate music sounds and rhythms to enhance the diversity of usage.

Resew's Van is designed to provide mending and repairing service of old clothes. It aims to promote the concepts of “recycling” and “reusing”. We converted the car into a workplace in order to make this service easily accessible for everyone. Resew’s Van is also designed to help people with disabilities. We seek to provide more job opportunities for people on crutches or those in wheelchairs. The interior space and furnishings of the van are designed specifically for them. There are handrails added next to the rear door to help people to switch from their wheelchair to a work chair. This makes their workspace more user friendly and safer. Starting from the storage and collection of fabrics, coils, and clothes and ending with the repair and delivery process – everything was designed to make the experience of the disabled worker in this small space as pleasant as possible.

A Plan for Transit-Oriented Development of the Taoyuan Station: Thruroad

The purpose of this project is to achieve the key goals behind transit-oriented development (TOD), including mixed land use, high-intensity development, increased use of public transport, reduced use of private transport, an improved quality of life for people living close to the station, and connection of high-speed rail and subway lines. With regards to mixed-land use and high-intensity development, we propose giving priority to the development of idle areas and construction of commercial buildings, to increase people’s proximity to their work and make their life more convenient. In addition, we suggest developing part of an idle area near the station into a disaster prevention park, connecting the surrounding green belts, and establishing temporary emergency shelters. With regards to the increased use of public transportation, we propose expanding the sidewalks and improving the infrastructure for tourists and regular commuters. With regards to urban disaster prevention, we believe that there should be more efforts put into promoting disaster prevention within the community and establishing relevant information networks. In summary, we hope that the TOD will help to attract more people to the area transforming Taoyuan Station into the third largest area in Taoyuan.

This group selected the oldtown in Daxi as our main planning area. In the past, tourist crowds in Daxi were concentrated mainly in this area. In recent years, in order to attract more tourists and create more business opportunities, recreational agriculture has been actively developed in the surrounding areas of the oldtown. Our group suggests to increase the popularity of this area through the development of the network of sidewalks and cycling paths, which would connect recreational farms with old historical buildings. Historical and cultural objects as well as traditional industries of Daxi could also be rejuvenated through pedestrianization of the oldtown, old market renovation and the connection of scenic spots scattered across the area.

The area in the front of the Taoyuan Railway Station has been developing for many years now. As a result, there are many new as well as old deteriorated buildings in the area. In order to revitalize the oldtown of Taoyuan and to enhance its public image, we propose introducing the pedestrian zones to the area. This could help to reduce traffic digestion problems during the rush hour. The revitalization of the area would also benefit local businesses. All those taking leisurely strolls from the Taoyuan Railway Station to the oldtown area would also be able to better appreciate the prosperous culture of the old Taoyuan city.

In terms of the number of daily passengers, Zhongli Railway Stations ranks third among other railway stations in Taiwan, lagging only behind the Taipei Rail Station and the Taoyuan Rail Station. “The Extension Plan of the Airport Express”, approved by the Ministry of Transportation in 2010, aims to provide passengers with more options and more convenient transfer service from the Taoyuan Airport subway line to railway. Moreover, in the future, under the “Railway Underground Plan”, the land for railway in Taoyuan city will be released for other use. In addition, the underground of the Zhongli Railway Station will be connected with the Taoyuan Airport’s subway line. Zhongli station (A23) of the Taoyuan Airport MRT line is currently under construction. Our project seeks to utilize all these opportunities, proposing various solutions toward improving the quality of the environment and traffic, disaster prevention and commercial development in the area.
