Chronology of Dr. Caleb Gattegno

1911 Born in Alexandria, Egypt as the eighth of nine children.

1932-1936 High-school mathematics teacher at the Lycée Français in Alexandria (Mission Laïque Française).

1937 Doctorate of Mathematics at the University of Basel, Switzerland.

1938-1945 Founder and director of the Centre d’Études Supérieures Scientifiques et Techniques in Cairo.

1944-1988 Wrote more than 120 books and 500 articles in scientific and other journals in a dozen countries. (See the bibliography of his works.)

1945-1946 Visiting mathematics professor at the University of Liverpool.

1946-1957 Mathematics teacher and teacher trainer for grammar schools in the London area and at the University of Liverpool.

1948 Master of Arts in Education at the University of London, with a thesis entitled “The Mathematical Definition of Education.”

1951 Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of Lille, France.

1952 • Founder of the Association for Teaching Aids in Mathematics, in Britain. This organization continues to exist as the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM). • Founder of Mathematics Teaching, a journal for the Association for Teaching Aids in Mathematics. • Translator of Jean Piaget, from French to English. • Docteur ès Lettres (Philosophy) at the University of Lille: Recherches sur une pédagogie de l’affectivité.
