From Me To You... I truly believe that we all have superpowers. Some people can climb the tallest buildings with a single bound, others can see through walls, and yet others can shoot webs out of their wrists. Oh, right, that would be Marvel superheroes. All kidding aside, I do think we have amazing strengths that we use in our daily lives. You hear about the person who lifts a car off of an injured person in an accident, the surge of adrenaline helps there I am sure. Or maybe it is as simple as a mother’s intuition that someone is getting in trouble, usually preceded by a deafening silence from the room full of toddlers. My superpower is spatial awareness. Not impressed? You should be. I can load a dishwasher to capacity and everything gets clean. I can parallel park any vehicle in any space more than 6 inches larger than the car in question without a scratch. I can drive on roads in England and not get my car totaled by passing hellions. I can go grocery shopping and be able to fit every last bag of frozen peas and tub of Ben & Jerry’s into my freezer.

Estrella Publishing - White Tanks View magazine

The best of all though is my packing ability. I was taught by my Mum how to pack things in things - you know socks inside boots, stuff like that. But it goes beyond the simplicity of ‘Traveling Tetris’. If you give me a pile of clothes and sundries I can, 9 times out of 10, make it all fit in your suitcase with room for one more cute top or pair of flipflops. The last time I came home from England I packed so efficiently I had one extra suitcase free - I of course used that space to bring home extra chocolate. I wish I had more superpowers, like the ability to stay on task for more than two minutes, or keep my house clean and tidy without the panic of impending visitors. Also the ability to get things done in a timely manner. That is one superpower I would trade spatial awareness for in a heartbeat. Actually, I think I will keep the powers I have, unless someone wants to trade for invisibility?

Legal Advice

HEALTH CARE POWERS OF ATTORNEY

The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, such as a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. If insurance requires transfer to a skilled nursing facility before going home from the hospital, your agent can arrange that for you. Different from other states, the Arizona allows you to authorize your health care agent to follow your instructions for burial or cremation. Otherwise, when there is no surviving spouse, all of the children or other family members may have to be consulted.

Another difference from other states is the mental healthcare power of attorney which helps avoid costly court intervention when there is mental illness, brain injury, dementia or Alzheimer’s. If a person does not have these healthcare powers of attorney, the court must give authority to act. An attorney is needed for the patient and a different attorney for the petitioner. After a court investigation, a hearing is held in open court—in about 45 days after a petition is filed. Time, money and privacy is saved by appointing an agent through healthcare powers of attorney. Mind & Body

Everyone has physical scars. Maybe it’s a scrape from a childhood stumble or a burn from cooking a special meal. Some scars come from body changes or physical conditions, such as acne scars, while others might be from serious events, like a surgery or an accident. It’s not uncommon for people to be insecure about their scars and try to hide them. When you think of all the scars you have on your body - big and small - try to realize they represent your unique journey in life. By building confidence surrounding your perceived physical imperfections, you will feel better about yourself and may even be able to help others who struggle with their scars. Consider these following steps to transform your mindset and your life. Accept your scar as part of who you are Mental health healing and physical healing often go hand in hand. Specially formulated scar treatments may help diminish the appearance of your scars. However, your physical scars will never be completely erased, so it’s important to accept them as part of what makes you unique. Understanding that the journey from scar, through treatment, to healing will leave you feeling more confident in the end.

someone asks, “How did you get that?” decide how you want to answer. Remember, your scar is a map to where your body has been and often, the stories behind them are interesting - some funny, uplifting or even tragic, but they all make you who you are today. Share your story with others Storytelling can aid in emotional healing and is a powerful tool for mental health and personal growth. Some people decide to journal through their feelings to help get their thoughts down on paper. That alone can help you to heal. Then, if you are comfortable with your story, share it with others who may be struggling with their own experience. From acne scar sufferers to those with scars from surgeries, scar bearers can tell their stories and shed light on the baggage that these perceived physical imperfections can bring both mentally and physically, embrace the beauty of their scars and get to know who they are beyond their scar. Learn more at ThisIsMyBrave.org.

Stop hiding your scars Having self-confidence to bear your physical scars can be difficult. Many people use makeup, clothing and accessories to hide their scars. Part of healing and embracing who you are is showing your scars outside of your home. It may take time and you may need to take it step by step as your confidence builds, but you’ll feel better when you can leave your home and shine brightly without having to hide part of who you are. Begin to open up about your scars It’s natural for people to inquire about the presence of a visible scar. The next time 8 Estrella Publishing - White Tanks View magazine

Purrfect Pets You’re probably familiar with therapy dogs but did you know that time spent with therapy cats provides scientifically proven emotional benefits as well? A white paper by Pet Partners found that therapy animals have been shown to decrease levels of general anxiety and alleviate symptoms of depression. Cats in general make ideal therapy animals and are a great alternative to therapy dogs. Plus, their smaller size and affinity for sitting on laps and cuddling can make them a good option for quieter environments and people who have limited mobility.

While everyone has experienced the emotional toll of recent world events, seniors have been especially impacted due to extended periods of isolation and increased loneliness. Therapy animal visits play a crucial role in helping during times of hardship. Therapy animals, including therapy cats, can especially comfort those with dementia, promoting socialization and engagement, and decreasing depression, anxiety and irritability in seniors. Time spent with cats can be a stimulating and highly engaging form of therapy - boosting mental health and enhancing

one’s sense of well-being. And while nothing replaces the emotional connection of petting a cat, research by Pet Partners also reveals that even engaging with virtual pet content can still be impactful. To provide more seniors with access to the benefits of therapy cats, Purina Cat Chow partnered with Pet Partners and the Institute on Aging, a non-profit dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for aging adults, to offer free virtual therapy cat visits for seniors over age 60. Pet Partners therapy cat handler Tracy Howell has seen firsthand the impact therapy cat visits can have. “During my time as a therapy cat handler volunteer, we have had the opportunity to visit locations from nursing facilities and assisted living centers, to Children’s Hospitals and universities,” said Howell about her cats Roger and Sal. “Cats have the unique ability to draw people out like no other interactions can. During a visit to a senior living facility, we were with a group of seniors who were taking turns petting Roger when a woman came up and joined the group and said she liked cats. A nurse later told me that the woman had never joined the group before or spoken much to anyone there!” Howell loves to see how her cats affect others. “It is such a joy to be able to share your animal with other people and watch their faces light up,” she said. “I think therapy cat visits make them feel special. For those having a hard day, once you see the ways you can relieve or distract them from their hardship, even for a few moments, it’s one of the most rewarding experiences.” And it’s not just the people who benefit - the cats enjoy their experience as well. “Roger purrs nonstop the whole time he is there,” said Howell. “I really think he’s into the healing properties of purrs!” To learn more about the healing power of cats, how you can get involved, and how Cat Chow is helping, visit CatChow.com/therapy. Money Matters Many people have financial goals - maybe it’s to get an education, buy a car, purchase a home, or start a business - that require access to credit. However, if you are new to credit, trying to build a credit history can be daunting. It helps to know the basics about the FICO Score. Your FICO Score includes measures on how long you’ve had credit, how much credit you have, how much of your available credit is being used and if you’ve paid on time. A FICO Score helps lenders determine how likely you are to repay a loan. This, in turn, affects how much you can borrow and how much it will cost (e.g., the interest rate).

Research has shown that consumers who frequently check their credit score are more likely to have a higher overall score. You can go to myFICO.com to monitor your score.

#4 Demonstrate responsible borrowing and stay the course Your score today doesn’t have to be your score tomorrow. Plan and stay the course with positive borrower behaviors that will be reflected in your credit file. Stay up to date on your bills, keep balances low and only apply for the credit you need. #5 Empower yourself with knowledge Understanding your credit score and how to manage it doesn’t have to be a mystery. There are many educational resources available, including free workshops supported by FICO where you can learn about your credit score directly from the experts. Visit www.scoreabetterfuture.com to learn more.

You can take steps to actively build their credit history. To help, here are five things to know if you are new to credit: #1 Understand the basics about your FICO Score To get a FICO Score, you need at least one credit account opened for six months or more and at least one account that is reporting to the credit bureaus in the last 6 months (those criteria can be met with the same account). #2 Take advantage of new ways to establish credit More lenders are using newer scores that tap into alternative data sources, such as telecom, utilities and checking account data. #3 Actively monitor your FICO Score 10 Estrella Publishing - White Tanks View magazine

Sunday Blues Do you sometimes find yourself feeling less than optimistic as your weekend draws to a close each Sunday? If so, you’re far from alone. Stats recently published on Inc.com indicate 81% of workers have experienced the “Sunday scaries” in anticipation of the work week ahead. Still, it’s important to fend off those encroaching feelings and preserve the quality of your Sunday afternoon, since weekends are generally intended to help people relax, rejuvenate and enjoy time with family and friends. In that spirit, here are five suggestions to help energize your Sunday. • Be intentional about weekend plans. Plan ahead so you spend your weekend time doing what you really need or want to do instead of simply waiting for things to unfold. Fulfilling your plan can help you feel more in Like Us On FACEBOOK for local control, ward off info, news and connections procrastination, White Tank Mountains Matters provide a sense of accomplishment and eliminate any sense of having “wasted” your weekend. • Incorporate activities you love. Spend part of your weekend doing something you enjoy. It’s all too easy to get caught up in activities you feel you have

to do that you never have time for the things that give you pleasure. • Maintain a cheerful environment. Make sure your physical living area is neat, clean, well-lit and boosts your energy. A little scent therapy in the form of a candle, room spray or plug-in oil can be the mood boost. • Consider disconnecting from your phone and computer. Keep thoughts of work from encroaching on your weekend psyche by unplugging from your screens until Monday morning. Protect your mental and emotional space from the stress of the working world and focus on self-care instead. • Prioritize sleep and eating habits. Disregarding your normal patterns on the weekends - perhaps by skipping meals, overindulging in junk food, failing to stay hydrated or staying up until the wee hours - can easily backfire by Sunday night. Following healthy habits can enhance your general sense of well-being and set you up well for the start of your work week. Sundays are a key part of every weekend, so don’t waste them thinking about Mondays. Strive for a healthy work-life balance by claiming each Sunday for yourself, your own pursuits and your own self-care.

Keep Moving

“Movement is not just a powerful and effective tool for pain management,” says personal trainer Pete McCall, NASM-CPT, PES. “Movement also brings people together. ”

• Start with low-impact exercise. Walking, swimming and biking are all low-impact exercises that are easier on your joints - and that you can do with other people. • Join a community centered around movement Whether it’s an exercise class, yoga center or walking club, getting together with others who are also focusing on their well-being can be encouraging and even fun. • Warm up first, and cool down after exercise. • Don’t sit out on life. If you see an opportunity to try a new sport, join a dance class, go on a nature hike or participate in a charity walking event - say “yes” to movement. Not only could it help relieve some of your pain, but it will make you feel that sense of connection to others that will boost your mood and encourage you to keep going on your wellness journey.

But how can you start, especially if you’ve been sedentary for a while? Here are tips for increasing your activity level to help with pain management and feel more connected with others.

“You may be surprised by where movement can take you,” says McCall. “I’ve never had a client say they regret getting started - only that they wish they’d started sooner.”

If you’re coping with pain, such as joint pain caused by osteoarthritis (OA), you may feel like you’ve been sitting out on life. Pain can make you reluctant to participate in activities that you enjoy and miss out on connecting with those you love. But experts will tell you that if you can move, even just a little more than you do now, you will reap benefits well beyond the physical.

Staycation

Picture this: You’re floating in the pool, enjoying some relief from the heat while lunch is sizzling on the grill. You hear soft music, the gentle sound of sprinklers splashing and your kids getting along (finally). You could swear you’re on a vacation miles away from home but believe it or not, you can have it all in your own backyard. With gas prices expected to remain high throughout the summer, many people are looking to spend their time off closer to home. Therefore, it’s important to take all the necessary steps to turn your home into a “Staycation Station” this season. Big Lots has prepared an outdoor fun guide to make your backyard the envy of the neighborhood at a fraction of the price of a beach trip. Here’s what you’ll need: 1. A place to stay cool No in-ground pool? No problem. You’ll need something refreshing to soak in this summer, and all the better if it’s only temporary. Try a quickset portable pool for adults to float and swim in and a smaller one with interactive elements like

Estrella Publishing - White Tanks View magazine

a bounce house or fountains to make a big splash with the youngest members of your family. 2. Fashionable, fun floats and accessories Don’t forget to purchase enough floats to go around. Other pool toys to consider are inflatable ones like floating basketball hoops, volleyball nets and beach balls, and sinking rings, sharks or mermaids. 3. Gear for competitive water battles Dry land also holds potential for loads of water fun. Stock up on some rapid-filling water balloons and host an impromptu battle. Another great way to cool off without a pool is on a water slide. 4. A place to gather and lounge Aim for a full staycation experience by setting up a comfy space to hang out while you grill out all day long. A cooler packed with drinks next to some inviting chaise lounges or a full patio set surrounding a fire pit will take your backyard summer vacation to the next level.
