From Me To You... I truly believe that we all have superpowers. Some people can climb the tallest buildings with a single bound, others can see through walls, and yet others can shoot webs out of their wrists. Oh, right, that would be Marvel superheroes. All kidding aside, I do think we have amazing strengths that we use in our daily lives. You hear about the person who lifts a car off of an injured person in an accident, the surge of adrenaline helps there I am sure. Or maybe it is as simple as a mother’s intuition that someone is getting in trouble, usually preceded by a deafening silence from the room full of toddlers. My superpower is spatial awareness. Not impressed? You should be. I can load a dishwasher to capacity and everything gets clean. I can parallel park any vehicle in any space more than 6 inches larger than the car in question without a scratch. I can drive on roads in England and not get my car totaled by passing hellions. I can go grocery shopping and be able to fit every last bag of frozen peas and tub of Ben & Jerry’s into my freezer.

Call now and Save!

The best of all though is my packing ability. I was taught by my Mum how to pack things in things - you know socks inside boots, stuff like that. But it goes beyond the simplicity of ‘Traveling Tetris’. If you give me a pile of clothes and sundries I can, 9 times out of 10, make it all fit in your suitcase with room for one more cute top or pair of flipflops. The last time I came home from England I packed so efficiently I had one extra suitcase free - I of course used that space to bring home extra chocolate. I wish I had more superpowers, like the ability to stay on task for more than two minutes, or keep my house clean and tidy without the panic of impending visitors. Also the ability to get things done in a timely manner. That is one superpower I would trade spatial awareness for in a heartbeat. Actually, I think I will keep the powers I have, unless someone wants to trade for invisibility?

Eye Eye

When improving your health and wellness, it’s essential to take care of your eyes too. For African Americans, this is especially important because of increased risk factors for eye disease and vision loss. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, glaucoma is three times more likely to occur in African Americans. The risks of glaucoma are magnified further when you consider that the disease strikes, on average, 10 years earlier and progresses faster among African Americans, according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation. The good news is that with early detection and treatments the majority of patients with glaucoma maintain their vision. By becoming aware of your risk factors and taking preventive steps, you can help protect your eyes. 1) Finding answers in your genes While the risk factors for eye disease continue to be studied, the ophthalmology community believes genetics can play a role. “African Americans have a range of genetic predispositions that make them more susceptible to eye diseases such as glaucoma,” says Dr. Eydie Miller-Ellis, professor of clinical ophthalmology and director of the Glaucoma Service at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania. 2) Don’t dismiss a lack of symptoms Since glaucoma often develops without symptoms and you can lose vision without noticing it, Miller-Ellis stresses that early action is vital for African Americans to help prevent glaucoma and other eye diseases.

4) No vision plan? No worries Don’t let the lack of a vision plan hold you back from scheduling a screening for glaucoma. Medical eye exams and treatments for eye diseases, including glaucoma, are typically covered by regular health insurance. 5) Know your family history Some eye diseases, such as glaucoma, can be hereditary. “To prioritize healthy vision, it’s important to have a complete understanding of your family’s history of eye disease,” says Dr. Mildred M.G. Olivier, founding regional dean at the School of Medicine, Ponce Health Sciences University, St. Louis campus. 6) Empower yourself Olivier also encourages people to be their own advocates in breaking down the health inequity barriers for minorities that may stand in the way of better eye health. For more information visit www.glaucoma.org

SHERI SPIREK

480.316.0016 SHERISPIREK.COM

3) Schedule an eye exam Understanding that you are at greater risk for eye disease and vision loss is the starting point toward protecting your eyesight. Begin a routine of yearly dilated eye exams with an ophthalmologist so that vision problems can be detected early. Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

Purrfect Pets You’re probably familiar with therapy dogs but did you know that time spent with therapy cats provides scientifically proven emotional benefits as well? A white paper by Pet Partners found that therapy animals have been shown to decrease levels of general anxiety and alleviate symptoms of depression. Cats in general make ideal therapy animals and are a great alternative to therapy dogs. Plus, their smaller size and affinity for sitting on laps and cuddling can make them a good option for quieter environments and people who have limited mobility.

While everyone has experienced the emotional toll of recent world events, seniors have been especially impacted due to extended periods of isolation and increased loneliness. Therapy animal visits play a crucial role in helping during times of hardship. Therapy animals, including therapy cats, can especially comfort those with dementia, promoting socialization and engagement, and decreasing depression, anxiety and irritability in seniors. Time spent with cats can be a stimulating and highly engaging form of therapy - boosting mental health and enhancing

one’s sense of well-being. And while nothing replaces the emotional connection of petting a cat, research by Pet Partners also reveals that even engaging with virtual pet content can still be impactful. To provide more seniors with access to the benefits of therapy cats, Purina Cat Chow partnered with Pet Partners and the Institute on Aging, a non-profit dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for aging adults, to offer free virtual therapy cat visits for seniors over age 60. Pet Partners therapy cat handler Tracy Howell has seen firsthand the impact therapy cat visits can have. “During my time as a therapy cat handler volunteer, we have had the opportunity to visit locations from nursing facilities and assisted living centers, to Children’s Hospitals and universities,” said Howell about her cats Roger and Sal. “Cats have the unique ability to draw people out like no other interactions can. During a visit to a senior living facility, we were with a group of seniors who were taking turns petting Roger when a woman came up and joined the group and said she liked cats. A nurse later told me that the woman had never joined the group before or spoken much to anyone there!” Howell loves to see how her cats affect others. “It is such a joy to be able to share your animal with other people and watch their faces light up,” she said. “I think therapy cat visits make them feel special. For those having a hard day, once you see the ways you can relieve or distract them from their hardship, even for a few moments, it’s one of the most rewarding experiences.” And it’s not just the people who benefit - the cats enjoy their experience as well. “Roger purrs nonstop the whole time he is there,” said Howell. “I really think he’s into the healing properties of purrs!” To learn more about the healing power of cats, how you can get involved, and how Cat Chow is helping, visit CatChow.com/therapy.

Keep Moving If you’re coping with pain, such as joint pain caused by osteoarthritis (OA), you may feel like you’ve been sitting out on life. Pain can make you reluctant to participate in activities that you enjoy and miss out on connecting with those you love. But experts will tell you that if you can move, even just a little more than you do now, you will reap benefits well beyond the physical. “Movement is not just a powerful and effective tool for pain management,” says personal trainer Pete McCall, NASM-CPT, PES. “Movement also brings people together. ” But how can you start, especially if you’ve been sedentary for a while? Here are tips for increasing your activity level to help with pain management and feel more connected with others. • Start with low-impact exercise. Walking, swimming and biking are all low-impact exercises that are easier on your joints - and that you can do with other people.

• Join a community centered around movement Whether it’s an exercise class, yoga center or walking club, getting together with others who are also focusing on their well-being can be encouraging and even fun. • Warm up first, and cool down after exercise. • Don’t sit out on life. If you see an opportunity to try a new sport, join a dance class, go on a nature hike or participate in a charity walking event - say “yes” to movement. Not only could it help relieve some of your pain, but it will make you feel that sense of connection to others that will boost your mood and encourage you to keep going on your wellness journey. “You may be surprised by where movement can take you,” says McCall. “I’ve never had a client say they regret getting started - only that they wish they’d started sooner.”

Home Costs

Much of the country is still in the middle of a red-hot real estate market. Home values are rising due to high demand and first-time homebuyers should be aware of how the value of their home impacts the way their premiums are calculated. Location and structure type are two examples of considerations that can affect home insurance premiums, but so do the features of the home, policy limits, and, in some states, even a homeowner’s personal finances. Policyholders should be aware of the variables that are factored into their insurance coverage. Location is perhaps the largest component when it comes to the costs of your insurance premium since it deals with exposure and hazard to the home’s physical structure. The type of home you have, where you live and the state or city in which you reside can drastically affect how much you will pay. In fact, location is such a primary factor that coverage in certain areas may require special policies. For example, many homeowners moved from the city to the country during the pandemic and

found that they now live in wildfire- or floodprone areas and that additional coverage is needed due to environmental risk factors not covered under available homeowners insurance policies in the area. Homeowners living in or near large urban areas may find that their premiums cost more due to the higher cost for construction or repairs. Take a close look at what factors are impacting the cost of your home insurance rate. The size of your home, regional vulnerability to natural disasters, and different building material options like brick or wood and their relationship to the environment may determine your premium’s cost. Replacement cost The more your home costs to replace, the more you will need in coverage to insure it. Deductible The deductible is the amount of money a policyholder must pay before the policy pays out for repairs or a loss. Home insurance premiums are calculated based on a number of factors that homeowners should take into consideration when researching the best coverage for their needs at a reasonable cost.

Sunday Blues

Do you sometimes find yourself feeling less than optimistic as your weekend draws to a close each Sunday? If so, you’re far from alone. Stats recently published on Inc.com indicate 81% of workers have experienced the “Sunday scaries” in anticipation of the work week ahead. Still, it’s important to fend off those encroaching feelings and preserve the quality of your Sunday afternoon, since weekends are generally intended to help people relax, rejuvenate and enjoy time with family and friends. In that spirit, here are five suggestions to help energize your Sunday.

• Be intentional about weekend plans. Plan ahead so you spend your weekend time doing what you really need or want to do instead of simply waiting for things to unfold. Fulfilling your plan can help you feel more in control, ward off procrastination, provide a sense of accomplishment and eliminate any sense of having “wasted” your weekend. • Incorporate activities you love. Spend part of your weekend doing something you enjoy. It’s all

too easy to get caught up in activities you feel you have to do that you never have time for the things that give you pleasure. • Maintain a cheerful environment. Make sure your physical living area is neat, clean, well-lit and boosts your energy. A little scent therapy in the form of a candle, room spray or plug-in oil can be the mood boost. • Consider disconnecting from your phone and computer. Keep thoughts of work from encroaching on your weekend psyche by unplugging from your screens until Monday morning. Protect your mental and emotional space from the stress of the working world and focus on self-care instead. • Prioritize sleep and eating habits. Disregarding your normal patterns on the weekends - perhaps by skipping meals, overindulging in junk food, failing to stay hydrated or staying up until the wee hours - can easily backfire by Sunday night. Following healthy habits can enhance your general sense of well-being and set you up well for the start of your work week. Sundays are a key part of every weekend, so don’t waste them thinking about Mondays. Strive for a healthy work-life balance by claiming each Sunday for yourself, your own pursuits and your own self-care.

Legal Advice HEALTH CARE POWERS OF ATTORNEY The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, such as a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. If insurance requires transfer to a skilled nursing facility before going home from the hospital, your agent can arrange that for you. Different from other states, the Arizona allows you to authorize your health care agent to follow your instructions for burial or cremation. Otherwise, when there is no surviving spouse, all of the children or other family members may have to be consulted.

Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

Another difference from other states is the mental healthcare power of attorney which helps avoid costly court intervention when there is mental illness, brain injury, dementia or Alzheimer’s. If a person does not have these healthcare powers of attorney, the court must give authority to act. An attorney is needed for the patient and a different attorney for the petitioner. After a court investigation, a hearing is held in open court—in about 45 days after a petition is filed. Time, money and privacy is saved by appointing an agent through healthcare powers of attorney.
