YOUR
From Me To You...
There are so many things to watch on TV nowadays. I hesitate to even use the word TV, as most people watch on their phones or tablets instead of using a traditional box in the corner of the living room. We switched from cable to streaming services a few years ago as a cost cutting measure, but with every new channel that has to be added to the subscription list and the unlimited wifi package we needed to handle all the extra data we are using, I am not sure how much money we are actually saving here.
I find myself scrolling and scrolling along, trying to pick the program or film I will commit my time to - and the amount of choice is baffling. As a child (I am going to date myself here) I had a whole three channels to choose from and those were only on for part of the day. Sunday afternoons were devoted to classic movies, Some Like It Hot, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers or The Pink Panther. I loved watching the stories unfold and the actors bumble towards a happy ending. That was the whole afternoon, family gathered together, concentrating on just the screen in front of us. Now family movie night
consists of trying to find something that appeals to everyone, hunting across platforms for a free version. It is $25 on Amazon but Netflix has it for free this month! Then snacks have to be obtained, someone invariably puts popcorn in the microwave, and finally we settle down to watch. By that I mean everyone whips out their cellphone and scrolls or plays games during the film.
I tried to introduce my kids to the classics but they didn’t enjoy them in the way I once did; let’s face it, their idea of a classic is Finding Nemo or The Princess Diaries. One movie we do all agree on is The Princess Bride, a wonderful combination of action, adventure, fantasy and romance. It has something for everyone and if you get a chance to bring your family together I highly recommend it. Just make sure they put their phones away first!

On Our Cover
On our cover we have rescues from local group RUFF - Rescuing Unfortunate Furry Friends. The group was founded last year to rescue unwanted pets in the Estrella area and it has certainly done a wonderful job so far. When I put out a call for models that had been a part of the group’s efforts I was not prepared for the sea of wagging tales and the cacophony of barking that greeted me at the South Lake. Unfortunately I do not have space to show you all the dogs (and cats) who showed up but trust me there was quite a pack!
The Mission Statement of RUFF is to provide a swift rescue with rehabilitation, when possible, for lost and abandoned animals. Once rehabilitated the goal is to find a safe, loving home for them. They have a board of directors who drive the vision and oversee the four branches which make it all possible. These teams include the Rescue Team who put up signs, post to social media and do the actual rescuing of animals once they are notified of a situation; the Foster Team who recruit foster parents, interview prospective parents and check
on their backgrounds; The Outreach Team put on presentations and educate the community; the Fundraising Team coordinate events and donation collections. RUFF is a 501c3 charity and is completely volunteer driven and run. They rely on the goodwill of the community to thrive and rescue as many pets as possible.
As Valerie Svenningsen, Board President says, “RUFF is a community based rescue and relies upon your support.”

Dad
My Dad was a disciplinarian, having attended military school himself in Pennsylvania. He was a 160 pound defensive lineman back before helmets had facemasks and were made of leather. After High School my Dad attended college for a couple years, then joined the Army for what was to be a one year enlistment that was extended with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He met my Mother, who was in the Red Cross, on Saipan in 1945. There began a romance resulting in them getting married in March of 1946. Dad and Mom drove out to Tucson in a war surplus jeep, where my Dad enrolled at the University of Arizona, and where I was born in 1947. We all then moved to Pittsburgh a couple years later where my Dad attended law school.
Did I mention he was a disciplinarian? It was a direct result of his military school and US Army raising. When he meted out a punishment, it was always creative. For example, I was once suspended for a week from Junior High for fighting. His approach was if I felt something was worth fighting for, then be willing to pay the price. The price this first time was to cut our back yard grass, with scissors, and then only after washing it with a bucket of soapy water! Or the time I had to scrub the carpet with a cleaning brush and hot, soapy water, or clean the coal dust out of the wooden basement floor boards with a tooth brush!
My brother, sister and I took our turns setting the table nightly for dinner with
every plate and saucer, every salad fork, soup spoon and knife in it’s proper place. We had to dress for dinner, I in my sport coat and tie. There were no elbows on the table, wipe your mouth before sipping from your water glass, then again after. I stood up whenever my Mom or sister stood or arrived to take their seat, as you would for any woman. We were required to converse, using perfect grammar (the penalty for misspeaking being a jab from his fork to the back of my hand).
Dad had me playing football in the fifth grade, and he attended every game all the way through High School. He loved to play golf on weekends, and I was his caddy. He learned to fly a plane, then took up skiing. He was an avid reader. His parents having given him a set of Harvard Classics when he was about ten, and he read them all. His favorite pastime was watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Friday Night Fights on TV. He enjoyed boxing and took me to the Golden Gloves regionals yearly for my birthday.
He became a successful Attorney, but insisted on being his own boss saying he took enough orders while in the military. He practiced all sorts of law but if he had a specialty, it would have been Real Estate Law. In fact, he was also an instructor for Penn State extension campus near Pittsburgh. Believe me, I heard all about my short-comings when I listed and sold my parent’s home when they decided to retire to their summer cottage on the Allegheny River!
Dad passed away on my 50th birthday. I flew back and delivered the eulogy for his service. After the service, my Mom had me go through his belongings. It was there I found a cancelled check he had sent to me in 1972. I needed $500 to buy our first home in Tucson on a VA loan. He reluctantly mailed me the check. In the memo section he had written “final support payment”! I last saw Dad the summer before he passed. He had given me a goodbye hug as I was about to leave, then retired to his favorite chair in the cottage. I gave him one last look, through the window, before getting into my car to leave.

The Adolescent Mental Health Crisis
In the years following the pandemic, many people are struggling with their mental health, but according to a recent report from the CDC, teens are faring the worst. There are many driving forces behind the current mental health crisis. Social media makes the current generation feel pressured to be a certain way and achieve certain things in life. They do not yet have a filter to understand that what is portrayed online and through social media is not always real. The good news is that there appears to be less stigma around teens reaching out for mental health services than in previous decades. “Our clinicians often report that their new clients were encouraged to start therapy by their peers. This, in addition to schools focusing on mindfulness strategies and coping skills and more celebrities opening up about their use of therapy, continue to decrease the stigma around mental health,” says Melissa Baker, Director of Integrated Health for the JFCS Glendale Healthcare Center.
Telling the difference between normal teen angst and signs of anxiety or depression
All people experience anxiety and depression. When it becomes chronic, it’s no longer
temporary and gets worse over time. To a parent, teen anxiety could look like perfectionism, a sudden drop in grades, or changes in behavior. Behavioral health experts say listening is the best way to recognize normal angst and when it may be more. Teens often come right out and tell adults they’re not doing well.
What steps should parents take if they’re worried that their teen might be experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts?
If there is an urgent concern about someone thinking about suicide, call the Suicide Hotline at 988. If you believe someone is an active danger to themselves, call 911. If there is no immediate concern, talk to your teen about their feelings and don’t dismiss them. Monitor their social media, medications, and safely store (lock up) items they could use to harm themselves, such as firearms, medications, chemicals, and alcohol. Contact a local mental health professional for assessments and support services and follow through with any appointments.
What else can parents do to help a young person’s mental health?
According to Rachel Wahle, JFCS Director of Case Management and Health Navigation Services, the best thing parents can do for their child’s mental health is to talk to them and ask questions. “Encourage them to tell you how they’re feeling and really listen to them. We tend to want to fix problems for our kids, but that can make them feel like we aren’t listening or taking them seriously. Instead, offer to talk through and brainstorm ways they can move forward. Work together to come up with options and possible solutions. This will increase their ability to analyze and problem-solve independently as an adult, instead of relying on others to be the fixer.”

Beauty Sleep
If you’re looking to improve your skin’s appearance, ask yourself: What are you doing for your skin while you’re asleep? Because about one-third of your day is spent sleeping, make the most of that valuable time by taking proactive steps so you can wake up with smoother, firmer, healthier-looking skin every morning.
“When you sleep, skin cell turnover rates increase, and your skin repairs itself from the day’s damage. But there’s more that you can do to help your skin while you’re sleeping,” says Dr. Joshua Zeichner, board-certified dermatologist. “By using a retinol serum at night, you can enhance the activities that are already naturally occurring. This can help your skin look its best when you wake up in the morning, and with continued use, improve radiance, texture and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.”
Here are tips to revamp your nightly skincare routine so you’ll get the amazing results you want.
* Make sure to thoroughly remove dirt, grime and makeup
It’s vital to take time to cleanse your face before bedtime, removing all traces of makeup before applying serum and/or moisturizer. Otherwise, dirt, oils and makeup residue will be sitting on your skin all night long. After cleansing your face, use a retinol product that will refresh your skin overnight.
* Don’t neglect your pillowcases
If you’re going to press your face against a pillowcase for 6-8 hours every night, wouldn’t it be ideal to make sure yours are really clean? Wash your pillowcases frequently in hot water so you’ll be sleeping on a clean surface each night. Consider buying extra pillowcases so you can swap them out almost nightly. Your skin will thank you.
* Moisturize your bedroom, not just your face
If you have dry skin or live in an arid climate, it may benefit your skin to use a portable humidifier in your bedroom. Keeping your bedroom’s humidity levels between 40-60% will help your skin naturally absorb more hydration overnight, while you’re (literally) getting your beauty sleep.
Following these steps, you’ll soon see the results - a healthier, more youthful complexion that you’ll be happy to wake up to every morning.

Yum Yum
Father’s Day Bacon Kebabs
Ingredients
RELISH
6 scallions, thinly sliced
1 serrano chile, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon toasted
sesame oil
½ teaspoon finely grated
peeled ginger
½ teaspoon light brown
sugar
Kosher salt
BACON AND ASSEMBLY
Vegetable oil (for grill)
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons tabasco
1 tablespoon unseasoned rice vinegar
1 teaspoon Sriracha
½ pound thick-cut bacon
Lime wedges (for serving)
Directions
Step 1 - Toss scallions, chile, lime juice, oil, ginger, and brown sugar in a medium bowl to combine; season with salt.
Step 2 - Prepare a grill for medium-high, indirect heat (for a charcoal grill, bank coals on one side of grill; for a gas grill, leave one or two burners off). Oil grates. Combine honey, tabasco, vinegar, and Sriracha in a small bowl; set glaze aside.
Step 3 - Thread bacon onto 6–8 skewers, folding back and forth in accordion style, and grill over indirect heat, turning every minute or so, until browned and crisp, 10–12 minutes. Baste with reserved glaze, turning every 30 seconds or so, until lacquered and slightly sticky, about 3 minutes (move to an even cooler spot if needed to keep glaze from scorching). Serve bacon with relish and lime wedges.
Step 4 - Do Ahead: Glaze can be made 1 week ahead. Cover and chill.

The Bug Guy
The monsoon season is a quintessential part of Phoenix Valley’s yearly weather pattern. It typically begins in late June and runs through September. The monsoons in Phoenix Valley are characterized by sudden, intense thunderstorms that bring heavy rain, high winds, and lightning. While these storms can be exciting, they can also bring an unwelcome problem: pests.
Monsoons can create an ideal environment for pests to breed and multiply. The combination of high humidity, standing water, and warm temperatures can create the perfect conditions for insect populations to explode. This can be a major problem for homeowners and businesses in Phoenix Valley, especially for those who have not taken the necessary steps to prevent pests from entering their properties.
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent pests and keep them from invading your property during the monsoon season. The first step is to inspect your property for potential entry points. Pests can enter your home through cracks in the foundation, gaps around windows and doors, and through vents and ducts. Seal any cracks and gaps with caulk, weather stripping or other materials. Also, make sure your screens are in good repair.
Another step you can take to prevent pests during monsoon season is to reduce water sources around your property. Mosquitoes are drawn to standing water and can breed quickly in even small amounts of water. Make sure your gutters, downspouts, and drains are clear and functioning properly.
Finally, consider working with a professional pest control company to help you prevent pests from invading your property during monsoon season. Many pest control companies offer a range of services that can help keep your
property pest-free, including pest inspections, preventative treatments, and ongoing monitoring and maintenance. A professional pest control company can also provide advice on how to make your property less attractive to pests and can help you identify and address potential problem areas.
In conclusion, monsoon season in Phoenix Valley can bring its own set of challenges when it comes to pest control. However, with the right preventative measures and help from a professional pest control company, you can keep your property free from pests and enjoy all the excitement and beauty of this unique weather phenomenon. Remember, prevention is the key when it comes to pest control - act early and act before pests become a major problem.

Grillin’ Time
There’s nothing like sunshine, a warm breeze and the smell of delicious food on the grill. If you already have a grill, this is a great time to upgrade, so you can cook more dishes for bigger get-togethers, or to try a different kind of grill, letting you experiment with new techniques like using a smoker. What kind of grill is best for you? It depends on your space, what you like to cook and how you like to prepare it. First, ask yourself the following questions:
• How much time do you want to spend cooking? If you’ve got a busy schedule, you may prefer the convenience of gas or electric grills. However, if you love spending time perfecting the perfect outdoor meal, you may enjoy a charcoal grill, smoker or kamado grill.
• How much space do you have? Do you host frequent large gatherings? Go big on your barbecue size to optimize these special occasions. For a big backyard, a larger grill with a kitchen island can create a focal point for entertaining. But a premium portable or compact grill is your best option for a cabin or other vacation destination with limited space.
• What do you love to cook? Many grills
offer extra features for particular foods. Think rotisseries if you love roasted chicken, or side burners for soups and stews. Crave the ‘za? Consider a grill with ample space for pizza stones.
To help you discover your next favorite grill, here are the features of five major grill types to consider when making your choice.
• Gas: If you want convenience and faster meal prep, a gas grill may be right for you. As with your kitchen stove, your food can be ready to cook in 10 minutes - and it’s easy to regulate cooking temperatures.
• Charcoal: If you love being hands-on with the nuances of outdoor grilling, a charcoal grill may be the choice for you. Some say charcoal provides the best flavor experience. You can use your charcoal grill for classic low and slow cooking - and high heat searing.
• Pellet: This a great option for people seeking optimal flavor. With available pellets in hickory, mesquite and oak, you can enjoy a truly flavorful cooking experience.
• Electric: If simplicity appeals to you most, an electric grill may be your best bet. Designed to produce constant heat and operate without an open flame - without charcoal or propanethey’re especially suited for apartment or condo dwellers.
Few products come in as wide an array of price ranges as grills, so almost anyone who wants a grill can find one that’s within their budget.

Get Over Yourself
Our thoughts are everything. They are always with us, and they drive our feelings and behaviors, NOT the other way around. Even when a feeling seems instantaneous, it’s always provoked by a thought. Always. The thought may occur in a nanosecond in the supercomputer that is our brain, but there’s some form of information processing that occurs before feelings and behaviors show up.
A self-limiting belief is a particular type of negative thought with painful emotion attached to it that we use against ourselves like a weapon to limit ourselves. Self-limiting beliefs are based on old scripts we’ve developed over time. They live in the subconscious. They are what I call the “Subconscious Bubble Gum” that serves as rules to live by in our minds. To add insult to injury, self-limiting beliefs drive the negative automatic thoughts (NATs) that live in the conscious mind, those pesky thoughts that pop into our heads and keep us from greatness or accomplishment.
Self-limiting beliefs come from our core beliefs, so it’s very important to discern what your core
beliefs are. The purpose of core beliefs is to make sense of our early experiences. Unfortunately, core beliefs are generally absolutist or black-and-white statements that are often not helpful.
So, why are these experiences so powerful? How do they have such a hold on us? Because they generally first occur during childhood, these experiences are some of the first ones we have, which means they set the standard for our view of the world and ourselves in it.
Early experiences are particularly powerful if they occur between the ages of 2 and 6 when we spend most of our time in a brainwave cycle known as Theta, which is the same state that a person is in when they are hypnotized or meditating. This is a state of hyper-learning, wherein we are very open to suggestion, which means we are easily influenced by information coming in from our environment. That information can turn into programming over time, especially if it’s reinforced by our experiences.

Men’s Health Month
June is Men’s Health Month, a reminder that annual exams and screenings may find potentially serious issues early, when your chances for treatment and a cure are better.
Men’s health issues don’t affect only men; they have a significant impact on everyone around them. People may not seek care until it is too late, and men often ignore signs of health issues. Your doctor may recommend various types of screenings based on age, family history and lifestyle choices. In general, some of the most important exams men should be getting are listed below.
Top health screenings for men:
· Cholesterol – High cholesterol may increase your risk for heart disease and stroke. It has no signs or symptoms, so it’s important to get it checked to know for sure.
· High blood pressure – High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” because it often has no warning signs. Be sure to get it checked regularly.
· Diabetes – Getting checked for diabetes can help prevent heart disease and stroke. Monitoring your blood glucose may also prevent damage in your eyes, kidneys and nerves.
· Colorectal cancer – If you’re 45 or older, your doctor may recommend a colonoscopy. For a less-invasive alternative, you may opt for
a stool-based screening every year. Ask your doctor what he or she recommends.
· Prostate cancer – At age 50+, men with average risk should talk to their doctor about whether to get screened for prostate cancer. If you have a higher risk, such as a relative who had prostate cancer, talk with your doctor beginning at age 40.
· Skin Cancer – Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Be sure to report any unusual moles or changes in your skin to your doctor.
· Lung Cancer – More than 80% of people who have lung cancer get it from smoking. If you smoke, the best way to lower your risk is to quit and ask your doctor if you need a screening.
These are just some of the most common health screenings that men should consider in order to keep their health on track. Your doctor may still recommend other screenings, tests or exams depending on your health risks, lifestyle and other relevant aspects of your overall health.

Home Sweet Home
Housewarming Gifts People Actually WANT
We’ve all experienced the stress and tension of moving. If you’re looking to find a useful gift for people that they will use AND LOVE, consider something on this list.
FOOD: If you’re in town, you can bring it by (but don’t stay a long time), and if you’re not, you can send DoorDash or Uber Eats.
COFFEE: Doing a Starbucks run (or, again, sending a delivery driver to do it for you) will have your tired pals crying happy, caffeinated tears.
COCKTAILS IN A CAN: Canned bevvies are all the rage right now and so easy to enjoy. No need to locate the bottle opener or corkscrew.
YOUR ELBOW GREASE: While this is the least fun option, it’s also probably the most appreciated. Your friend will appreciate you for pitching in on their hardest days.
CLEANING SUPPLIES: Coming by with a box of essentials will elevate you to a godlike status… and if they don’t end up using them right now, you know they’ll get used in the future.
BATHROOM ESSENTIALS: Bring a package of TP — the GOOD stuff, not the kind that feels like tree bark… and some premium hand soap.
A CUTE DOORMAT: There’s nothing like a fresh, new start at a fresh, new house, and nothing says, “Welcome!” quite like a fresh, new doormat.
PLANTS: Houseplants (fake or real) lend a homey vibe no matter what the season.
POOL FLOATS: Pool owners LOVE getting goodies for swim time.
A SUBSCRIPTION CRATE: From candy to coffee, dog treats to dinners, there’s a subscription crate for just about anything your friend is into.

Supporting Seniors
For many Americans, life today feels typical - we’re back in school, returning to the office and are enjoying our hobbies and social lives. Connecting in-person with friends and family is once again a regular part of our routine.
Unfortunately, seniors (those aged 55+) have been more isolated than younger demographics during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Restricted visitation in assisted and long-term care facilities, lack of community events and lesser access to digital social networks has led to increased social isolation.
Luckily, there are tools caregivers can use to ease the physical and mental effects of social isolation among seniors. Finding safe ways to connect with the elderly and engage them in the latest happenings can do a world of good for those who might be feeling left behind.
Here are some top tips for supporting your aging loved ones in our ‘new normal.’
* Prioritize connecting consistently Does the senior in your life know how to video chat? Conversations held face-to-face - even through cell phones - can make a huge difference in decreasing feelings of loneliness. Do they prefer to connect the oldfashioned way? Set up a weekly phone call or send friendly notes and gifts through the mail. Reminders that they are loved, appreciated and in your thoughts can boost serotonin and help them feel a sense of inclusion.
* Create welcoming and safe social spaces
COVID-19, now shifting to an endemic stage in the eyes of the federal U.S. government, is still contagious and can be more dangerous for immunocompromised people like our senior population. Take proactive safety measures to make sure all guests, especially seniors, are comfortable when gathering socially.
Just know that the more preparation you do, the more inclined a senior may be to join in on the socializing fun and ‘new normal’ we are learning to embrace.
