We built a home in Estrella last year to use for vacations and eventually become snowbirds, at least that was the plan. As we came down for getaways we fell in love with Estrella, our neighbors, and the overall community. We decided this would be our forever home. So, we packed up and left rainy Portland Oregon in the rear-view mirror and came down to Estrella full time. We purchased an amazing pool building and landscaping company with a 25-year track record of high-quality projects. We are excited to bring our quality and service to our Estrella neighbors.

From Me To You... Does anyone else have a hard time writing 2021 as the current year? I catch myself every time I have to write a check or note the date. It seems as though I didn’t get to use 2020 much so switching to 2021 seems... disloyal?

We all lost so much last year, time is one of the smallest to think about but perhaps one of the biggest to wrap our heads around. We not only lost time, but all the things we were planning on using that time for. Momentous birthdays were swept under the rug. Graduations were virtual. Time itself seemed to stretch and bend. The world was at once creeping along at a snail’s pace and also racing towards some unknown destination. Time is not just a space from one moment to another, it is also something you can give. Time to heal, time to think, time to grow. The grace of time to make mistakes and learn. Time to become something more, something better. As a parent there are many moments where the gift of time is all that your child needs to figure out a way forwards. I try to model that behavior as my own children become older. The impulse as a Mom is to rush forwards and help, ease the way and prevent our offspring from making easily avoidable mistakes. I think that is not doing them any favors. If they do not fail, how can they learn to overcome life’s trials and tribulations? One day you will not be there to jump in front of them when a problem arises, and if they have not learned to cope on their own already it will be that much harder without guidance. I have a friend who is struggling with her health. She probably doesn’t have much time left on this Earth, and watching her vibrancy slipping away is almost unbearable. Her time is cut short and there is no fairness in that. Her time to live, watch her children grow and thrive. Her time to 4 Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

age gracefully, see the grey hair and wrinkles mark the passing of time. Her time to be. I am a planner and a do-er. I want to rush in and organize her life and tie up all the threads I see hanging around her. Things she should do for her family, things she should do for herself. But. It is not my life and not my time to decide how to use. The best gift I can give her is the time to do what she wants. To spend or squander the time she has remaining in whichever way she chooses. And that is hard. But it is right. I urge you all to think about the time we have been given and decide how you want to spend it. Otherwise it will just rush past, and by the time you decide it may be too late.

Have you driven by EMR’s South Lake recently and wondered what people were doing on the courts with those funny looking rackets? It’s pickleball in EMR! Pickleball is a paddle ball sport that combines elements of badminton, table tennis, and tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, much life a whiffle ball, over a net. Pickleball shares features of other paddle sports, with rules similar to tennis and a court layout like a badminton court. Pickleball is a relatively new sport, having been developed in Washington in 1965. The story is that two gentleman returned home from golf to find their families bored. The attempt to setup a badminton court failed due to lack of equipment, so with a little ingenuity, they created pickleball! While pickleball is a relatively new sport, it is reported to be one of the fastest growing sports in the United States.

allows players to get outdoors and meet people from the community. If you have never played pickleball before and would like to learn, members of the pickleball group are happy to mentor you. If you schedule does not permit you to play during the day, join the “Friday Night Lights” games, which start around 6:30 pm on Fridays. Pickleball at South Lake has room to grow, with players expressing the desire for more courts. Interested in joining in on the fun? Try joining the EMR Pickleball Face group, currently with 310 members, or stop by the courts sometime. Cover photo and article credit go to Jeffrey Sikes, of Jeffrey Sikes Photography.

The South Lake pickleball courts are very busy this time of year, with members of EMR’s Pickleball and guests from out of town. In addition to a fun way to exercise, Pickleball

The Bug Guy

It is nice to see people outside and at the parks enjoying time with family and friends, it shows how resilient and adaptable we are. As the COVID 19 virus runs its course, and the vaccination process continues to accelerate, its good to see us all coming together to see this through. As a society we have overcome and accomplished so many things, and we have so much more to do, I know we can and will beat this too. I challenge all of us to go do something nice for someone without any expectations. Spring is here and that means the bugs are all out and ready to invade our homes! Crickets, Scorpions, Spiders, and a wide range of insects, including termites!

The bark scorpion can grow to approximately 2.5-3 inches in length, they are a uniform straw color and have a distinctive tail that is longer than the length of their body and very thin. The Sonoran Desert Scorpion can grow up to 10 inches in length, but the more commonly found ones are up to 4-5 inches long. They have a straw colored body with brown striations across their back, and their tail is about ¾ quarters the length of their body, the width of the tail is about 1/3rd the width of their body. Their sting is equivalent to a hornet. We have approximately 200 hundred species of spider in the Sonoran Desert. The most notable being the Black Widow, this spider is very reclusive and prefers our outdoor environment. It likes dark and tight locations to build its nest, like in the weep screed along your exterior foundation wall. We have a recluse family spider here as well, the Desert Recluse, it looks like a brown recluse, but has a less aggressive venom. The Desert Recluse is also a very reclusive spider.

Crickets are an annoying with their loud mating call, primarily used in the dark. Crickets are best controlled outside, as soon as they get inside, Submitted by Larry Cash, they are much more challenging to get rid of. We of Estrella Mountain Pest and Termite Control, have several different species of crickets here in Estrella Resident the valley. All crickets are food for scorpions. Scorpions are indigenous to the Sonoran Desert. We have two primary species of scorpions here, Bark scorpion and the Sonoran Desert scorpion. The Bark Scorpion is unique as it is the only scorpion in North America than can be deadly.

Green Thumb Gardening saw record growth in 2020 and experts expect many more people will be digging in the dirt again this spring. From “Victory” vegetable gardens to balcony containers, outdoor gathering spaces and mood-lifting landscapes, gardening is providing an outlet during the pandemic. With all that expansion and enthusiasm comes the need for inspiration and advice.

The National Garden Bureau was founded in 1920 in the wake of World War I, when an increasing number of suburbanites needed basic backyard gardening instruction. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to provide education to motivate people to enjoy plants, from indoor houseplants to outdoor gardens.

one edible and one shrub as their ‘Year of the’ crops. One of the more popular picks for 2021 is The Year of the Sunflower. If there was ever a time where we needed to add some sunshine to the world, it’s now. Sunflowers add bright, cheery color to the garden, and they’re extremely easy to grow. They’re simple to start from seed, or you can purchase new potted varieties that promise multiple blooms throughout the season. Planting sunflowers, hibiscus, hyacinth, monarda and other easy-togrow flowers can help add color and curb appeal, but they also add natural beauty to outdoor gathering spaces, another COVID-19 world trend.

Money Matters This year, as you tidy up your home and surroundings, why not also consider some financial spring cleaning? Here are a few ideas for getting your financial house in order: • “De-clutter” your portfolio. Over time, your investment portfolio can accumulate redundancies – that is, you might own several investments that are essentially similar. It might be appropriate to replace some of these and broaden your holdings. • Own your investments purposefully. As an investor, you should be following a goalbased strategy that includes the matching of certain investments with certain objectives. For example, you might own stocks or mutual funds to eventually provide the capital appreciation potential you’ll need to retire comfortably. But you might also own other vehicles, such as bonds or other fixed-income investments, to provide you with a source of regular income. • “Dust off” your investment strategy. Over a long winter, your windows can get dirty and grimy, so, when spring arrives, you may want to get out the glass cleaner. Over time, your investment may getSize: somewhat 3.5” x 2.5” |strategy Maximum Font 30 pt “dusty,”

too, especially if you’ve experienced significant changes in your life, such as a new job, a new child or even a new plan for retirement. By periodically reviewing your investment strategy, you’ll be able to clarify your vision for the future. • Protect yourself from hidden dangers. When you think of your financial situation, are you also exposing yourself and your loved ones to risk? If something were to happen to you, could your family members stay in their home? Could your children still go to college? To help keep their lifestyle intact if you weren’t around, you’ll need adequate life insurance. And to avoid burdening your grown children with potentially huge expenses should you ever need some type of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay, you may want to talk to a financial advisor about protection strategies. By taking some spring cleaning measures, you can brighten your living space for the seasons ahead. And by applying some of the same principles to your financial environment, you can help improve the prospects for meeting your important goals. Home Sweet Home If you’re looking for a home to purchase right now and having trouble finding one, you’re not alone. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), across the country, inventory of available homes for sale is at an all-time low – the lowest point recorded since 1982.

Below are some key strategies to help YOUR offer stand out from the others: 1. Be prepared. Make sure you’ve spoken with a loan officer and know all the details of what you can afford, and you have a prequalification form. 2. Act fast. Do what you can to look at properties as quickly as possible. 3. Don’t underbid. Put your best foot (and best offer) forward from the start on a well-priced property. 4. Pay your own closing costs. It’s all about the seller’s net gain in the end, so plan ahead to cover your own closing costs and any other additional items like a home warranty and HOA transfer fees where applicable. 5. Close quickly. Unless the listing agent has disclosed the seller’s desired sale date, agree to close on the property as quickly as possible.

Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

6. Avoid contingencies. When possible, avoid making your offer contingent on such things like your current home sale. 7. Increase your earnest money deposit. Show the seller you are serious about purchasing their property by increasing the amount you put up as earnest money once your offer is accepted. 8. Assure the seller you won’t ask for repairs. Making an offer contingent on a home inspection is a must in most cases for the savvy buyer. You can, however, guarantee you won’t ask the seller to make any repairs if they accept your offer. 9. Include a Purchase Price Escalation Clause. When submitting your offer, consider including an escalation clause stating you want to automatically increase your offer if someone outbids you, up to a certain amount. 10. Be persistent. If your first offer does not get accepted, don’t get discouraged. Keep at it! The chances of YOUR offer being accepted go up for each strategy you include from the list above. Often, it’s not just the highest priced offer that wins, it’s about the offer as a whole. Submitteed by Tara Rutkowski, Realtor®, Realty One Group

Healthy Life Choices Do you want to be healthier and have a new outlook on life? Making your health a priority may seem complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. Follow these easy steps to get you started on your health journey. Drink More Water While you may be tired of being told to drink more water, it is essential for your body and can promote your health in many different ways. Staying hydrated can help lower your blood pressure, aid digestion and improve your physical performance. Drinking water can also help with weight loss, whether consumed before a meal or replacing sugary drinks and sodas. According to a 2018 study, dehydration can also lead to depression, proving that water benefits are not just physical. Prioritize Mental Health After a challenging year like 2020, it is essential to maintain your mental health as much as you do your physical health. Health and wellness counselors can help, too. Programs like InSHAPE® from Southwest Behavioral & Health Services promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. They allow participants to hold themselves accountable with weekly sessions and quarterly assessments with free, certified health mentors. Health programs like InSHAPE go deeper by not only making participants more mindful of their health choices but boosting their confidence and improving their self-esteem as well. These improvements can significantly impact other parts of their life. Members have said that the program has helped them beat 16 Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

addiction, pursue a career, and feel physically and mentally healthy.

Eat Breakfast Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s not just for kids. Regardless of your age, breakfast is vital for brainpower, can improve weight control, and makes you less hungry throughout the day. The most significant benefit of eating breakfast is the energy boost. While it can be hard to get out of bed in the morning, having breakfast helps fight off sluggishness and jumpstarts your day. While you may feel like you never have enough time for breakfast in the morning, there is an abundance of easy and fast breakfast recipes available online. Your health can be tricky to navigate, and significant changes can be overwhelming. Remember to start small and build your way up over time. If you need any help along the way, we’re here for you. Submitted by Marcie Herzog, director of highrisk populations and the InSHAPE program at Southwest Behavioral & Health Services. More information is available at www.sbhservices.org.

Outdoor Living Last year, many people took a fresh look at their outdoor living spaces, as life outdoors became of renewed importance as spaces to gather together. Backyards transformed into stay-cation retreats, and front entries were revamped into spaces for social distancing reminiscent of oldfashioned porches. No matter where you live, your outdoor space can be enjoyed all season with simple upgrades using hardscapes, such as adding a fire pit for warm gatherings or an outdoor kitchen for the taste of summer all year. Whether you do it yourself or hire a landscape professional, hardscaping materials - including natural stone, interlocking concrete pavers and retaining wall systems - can add value to your home and help set the stage for a heated hot tub, cozy seating around a fire, wood-fired ovens for pizza parties and more. 1) Add a fire feature for chilly days and nights. A fireplace, fire table, fire pit, chiminea or patio heater will enhance any outdoor space with warmth and ambiance. Fire pits and

fireplaces also are available in kits including all materials that are popular with do-ityourselfers.

2) A dedicated outdoor cooking space lets you grill in any season. Along with multifunction grills, compact wood-fired outdoor ovens are popular choices, and hardscape designs can make the perfect countertop or grill island. 3) Create easy access from indoors to outdoors. A raised patio, built with retaining wall units and pavers, is a low-maintenance solution as compared to a deck. Pavers come in many styles, textures and colors, and require little to no maintenance if properly installed. 4) Accessorize with functionality in mind. Lighting, pergolas, shades, awnings, screens and year-round furniture should be considered in an outdoor space all-season refresh. Low-voltage LED lighting can be installed between courses of retaining wall units, under capstones and along paving stone patios and paths. Outdoor living is an essential part of everyone’s health and well-being. Create an outdoor space that adds value to your property and keeps you outside longer into the night, earlier in the spring and later into the season.

Rx Safety

Prescription medications have many benefits, including managing pain, regulating chronic conditions, preventing disease and more. Despite numerous positives, medications can be dangerous to others in your household, especially kids. Every eight minutes a child goes to an emergency room for medicine poisoning, according to Safe Kids Worldwide, and three out of four ER visits for medicine poisoning are due to kids getting into parents’ or grandparents’ medicine. Unintentional injuries including poisoning are the leading cause of mortality among infants and children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Research from the American Association of Poison Control Centers shows the vast majority (90%) of poisonings occur at home. Look at how

you use medications in your household and adopt safer practices that include: Never leave medications out: When busy multitasking, you may leave your medication out on a counter or toss it in your purse or backpack. Don’t leave medications where kids can see them or where they can easily be found, such as in drawers, on nightstands or in bags. If the medication is for your child when they are sick, never leave it in their bedroom. Store medicines out of reach: Choose one storage location for all medication that is out of reach of children. This can be anywhere throughout the home that is high and out of sight. Talk with your children: Be honest with kids about the dangers of taking prescriptions. Adjust your conversation based on your child’s age, stressing that medications are only meant for the person the doctor prescribed them for and can be harmful to anyone else. Tell them to never take a medication without checking with you first and if they find any pills or bottles to bring them to you right away. These steps will help significantly reduce the chances your child will access your medication. However, in case of emergency, call poison control immediately. Program the poison control center at 800-222-1222 into your home and cell phones. You may want to add this number on a sticky note or other label in your medicine storage space as well.

Fun @ Home

No matter what your household size or the variety of ages that live in your home, there is plenty to do without leaving the house. Try interactive games: When you’re not sure what to play, ask Alexa. The smart device is your gateway to countless great games like Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, Deal or No Deal, Escape the Room and classics like PacMan, The Floor is Lava, Clue, Twister, Simon Says and Mads Libs if you’re feeling nostalgic. Plan a family game night, stock up on favorite snacks and have some fun. It’s a challenge to try something new you’ve never played before and you might be surprised to see who wins! Backwards day: Sometimes the opposite can be more fun, so plan a backwards day and do everything in reverse. Young children really enjoy doing activities like wearing sweatshirts backward or eating breakfast for dinner. The sillier the

better when it comes to backwards day, so don’t worry if things get a little goofy. Have a dance party: Play some tunes and show off your best moves with a family dance party for smiles all around. Look at family photographs: Get a little sentimental by spending some time looking at images of your family over the years. While some of this can easily be accessed on your phone, don’t limit yourself. Dust off old photo albums and have fun trying to guess who is who and sharing memories with younger generations. Try new recipes: Extra time at home means extra time for trying new foods and recipes. Have everyone pick out a few they want to try and then plan a day each week to cook them together. Another idea is to choose theme weeks and cook to match your theme.
