From Me To You... ‘If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.’ - Benjamin Franklin.

I am a planner, always have been. In fact I usually have a plan, a back-up plan, and a worst case scenario plan. I suppose it is because I work on an “assume the best but prepare for the worst” mentality and for that you need a few plans. We also have four children and that takes a ton of planning. School, work, extra-curriculars, they all need to be combined in the plan. Now that three of our kids are adults I thought I could ease up on the planning and allow others to take the lead. Well, as Michael Chabon said, “Man makes plans... and God laughs.”

not happen according to plan. We spent the summer in the US California and Florida, where we dodged hurricanes and humidity. Fun, but not the original plan.

I am also coming to a new stage in life. Planning for retirement. Not the financial part, that happened many years ago, thank goodness. I am talking about the fun part. Downsizing to a smaller house, traveling, taking on a new hobby. All the things I have been putting on the back burner while I get on with the business of raising a family. The possibilities are endless well as endless as my budget allows anyway. I have never been to Belize, or on safari, I was supposed to live in New Zealand with family when I was younger, perhaps I could finally see what life is like in the antipodes. Whatever I decide to do I know that there will be many plans to make - and really that’s half the fun!

Our lives changed dramatically a few months ago and we have since welcomed two teenage girls Catherine Uretsky into our home and our family. We love having Editor, Up The Hill Magazine them and we have known them for most of their info@estrellapublishing.com lives so the transition is mostly seamless. Except 623.594.9283 for the planning. These kids have never learned how to plan ahead. For anything. They live on the fly and change plans on a whim. They are truly go with the flow girls and it has worked for them up to this point. The problem is that it doesn’t work in our family dynamic. I can’t drop everything to pick someone up from school when they decide not to go to a friend’s house after all, or they have to buy something for school the next day. I can help them out when I know what’s coming, we are working on that together and I know it will get better with time. Long-term plans are something else I love to do. You could call it a form of dreaming I suppose. The things I would love to do if everything comes together. I have been planning a family trip for a couple of years now but because of Covid my plans keep getting shelved and changed. My father turned 80 this summer and we were all supposed to be in England for a month of celebrations and exploration. Obviously that did Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

YES for LESD Let’s get right to the point: the Liberty Elementary School District (LESD) is asking us to approve a 10 percent budget override in November, and we shouldn’t hesitate to vote Yes. Here’s why: passage of the override will allow LESD to continue to provide the high quality of education our community needs and to which it has become accustomed, and because the district has continuously delivered on its promises to put all override dollars into the classroom since it passed its first override in 1983.

Your Yes vote will not increase LESD’s tax rate, and that’s a bargain, especially when you consider what the override funds: free full-day kindergarten (Arizona only pays for a half-day), music programs, arts programs and physical education. Each of these programs is uniquely beneficial to students. Studies have shown that all-day kindergarten boosts academic performance for students well into elementary school. Students involved in band and music programs have larger vocabularies, score higher on achievement tests and have higher attendance rates. Arts programs strengthen students’ problem-solving and critical thinking skills. PE classes not only build muscles and teamwork skills, but brain cells as well. Of course, the most influential factor to high student 6 Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

achievement starts with effective teachers. The override allows the district to maintain competitive salaries for teachers and staff. In an era of severe teacher shortages, LESD’s threeyear teacher retention rate is at 87 percent. Further, LESD has used override funds to keep student-to-teacher ratios on average at 26 to 1, which allows the district to attract and keep high-quality teachers. In fact, 14 percent of all teaching positions in the district are funded through the override. That’s a lot of services for children for less than the cost of a pizza per month, especially when you consider Arizona education funding is unfortunately ranked 47th in the nation. Over the years LESD has established a wellearned reputation for being excellent stewards of the public’s money. Since 1983, 100 percent of override dollars have gone straight to the classroom. That’s in addition to the 70 percent of state funding that the Arizona Auditor General says is spent in LESD classrooms. That’s no accident. The fact is that LESD spends more money in the classroom while spending less on administrative costs than peer districts across the state while receiving less revenue per student than average districts in Arizona. And here’s something else to consider: making sure we have good schools increases the value of our homes. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, there is a strong correlation between school expenditures and home values. A report titled, “School Spending Raises Property Values,” found that for every dollar spent on public schools in an area, home values increased by $20. LESD provides the students of our community with a rich educational experience. LESD has spent tax dollars wisely and has kept its promises. LESD has earned our community’s trust. Let’s honor that by voting Yes for the LESD override on Nov. 2. Paid for by YES For Liberty Schools

Money Matters What does retirement security mean to you? And how can you work toward achieving it? Here are some suggestions:

• Build your resources. While you’re working, save in tax-advantaged accounts such as your IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. In your 401(k), contribute at least enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered, and increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. • Look for ways to boost retirement income. When transitioning to retirement, you can take steps to align your income with your needs. For example, consider Social Security. You can start collecting it as early as 62, but your monthly payments will be much larger if you can wait until your “full” retirement age, typically between

October 21st, 9-10am Presidio, 18209 W Calistoga Dr

66 and 67. So, if you have sufficient income from other retirement accounts, and you and your spouse are in good health with a family history of longevity, you may consider delaying taking Social Security. • Prepare for unexpected costs. During your retirement, you can anticipate some costs, such as housing and transportation, but other expenses are more irregular and can’t always be predicted, such as those connected with health care. Even with Medicare, you could easily spend a few thousand dollars a year on medical expenses, so you may want to budget for these costs as part of your emergency savings, and possibly purchase supplemental insurance. You may also want to consider the possibility of needing some type of long-term care, which is not typically covered by Medicare and can be quite expensive. The average annual cost of a private room in a nursing home is more than $100,000, and it’s about $55,000 per year for a home health aide. To address these costs, you may want to consider some form of protection, such as long-term care insurance. • Do your estate planning. It’s hard to feel totally secure in retirement if you’re unsure of what might happen if you have an unexpected health event, become incapacitated or die earlier than expected. That’s why you’ll want to create a comprehensive estate plan – one that might include documents such as a durable power of attorney, a will and a living trust. A review of your insurance coverages and beneficiaries can also help protect your assets and ensure they are distributed the way you want. In creating your plan, you will need to work with your financial advisor and a legal professional, and possibly your tax advisor as well. Thinking holistically about your retirement security and developing and executing a strategy aligned with your goals may help free you to enjoy one of the most rewarding times of your life. The Bug Guy

Crickets are usually equated with campfires, the great outdoors and peaceful evenings - unless they find their way into your home. An indoor infestation can cause sleepless nights when males rub their legs together to attract a mate. The resulting chirping moves from quaint to downright maddening quick. Then there is the damage crickets cause by snacking on drywall, fabric, wallpaper and landscaping. While they don’t bite, sting or spread disease, crickets attract additional houseguests that homeowners particularly dread: scorpions and spiders. These creepy crawlies think crickets are a tasty snack. Crickets need daytime hiding places to avoid drying out and overheating, especially in the Arizona heat. Usually, crickets’ hiding places become their nesting sites including under the cusp of stucco siding, meter boxes and block walls. These areas can be difficult to reach for many homeowners, but your pest control professional will have the proper tools, equipment and expertise to eradicate these nuisance houseguests whether they are inside or out.

You can minimize the chances of infestation by following these simple steps: • Remove hiding and nesting spots outside your home, clutter, compost, wood, or leaf litter, and cutting back landscaping and vegetation six inches from the home. • Seal cracks in your home’s foundation and walls. • Caulk around windows and door frames • Cover vents with fine-mesh screens. • Turn off outdoor lights at night, as crickets are attracted to artificial light sources. • Water the lawn and garden during the day. • Keep items such as cardboard boxes, tarps, and pool toys picked up as they can be hiding locations for crickets during the day. • Put pet food away at night. • Ensure that your trash can is tightly sealed. • Clean up all spills and kitchen messes immediately. • Store food in airtight containers or the refrigerator. These noisy pests are active throughout the year and come out at night to eat, so focusing your prevention efforts during these times will be your best bet. Home Sweet Home A new home and the countless memories it will help create in the years to come can be so exciting but also a bit overwhelming to a new homeowner all at the same time. A nice housewarming gift can ease the transition during the most hectic times. To commemorate such a momentous occasion, it’s customary to bring the owners a gift that will help them turn four walls and a roof into a home. Around the world, people give housewarming gifts to wish new homeowners well in their new homes. Some believe the tradition began in France. While others believe Russia to be the origin of the housewarming tradition. The word itself, housewarming, dates back to the 16th century, so it’s safe to say housewarmings have been taking place for a very long time. Besides being highly useful, traditional housewarming gifts were also ceremonial and symbolic. Their intentions were to clear the abode of “bad vibes” and evil spirits. Here are 8 housewarming gifts and their symbolic meaning. YOUR

LOCAL

1. Bread “May this house never know hunger.” 2. Wine “May you always have joy and never go thirsty.” 3. Plants “May your home always be filled with life.” 4. Honey “May you always enjoy the sweetness of life.” 5. Candle “May you always have light through the darkest times.” 6. Knives “May always be protected from intruders.” 7. Sugar “May your life be filled with sweetness.” 8. Rice “May the love in your home multiply.” “A housewarming gift is one that you typically bring upon your first visit to someone’s new home, or send once they have moved in,” says Myka Meier, founder of Beaumont Etiquette. “It is a gift that helps make their new apartment or house feel like a home and is also sometimes intended to ‘christen’ a new place.” Sometimes it is difficult to pick out a housewarming gift for someone you do now know well, but remember, it’s the thought that counts. The gesture of welcoming someone into their new home is what they will remember the most! Submitted by Tara Rutkowski, Realtor®, Realty One Group

Chicken Sheet Pan Dinner with Grapes, Carrots and Parsnips Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 1/4 teaspoons turmeric 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 2 large garlic cloves, minced 4 chicken thighs on the bone, skin removed and visible fat trimmed 2 medium onions, sliced 1/3-inch thick 3 carrots, peeled and cut in 2 and 1/2-inch sticks 2 medium parsnips, peeled and cut in 2 and 1/2inch sticks Freshly ground pepper 1 1/4 cups red California grapes Directions Heat the oven to 400 F with rack in the center. Line a shallow baking sheet (10x15 or 11x17) with parchment paper or foil (shiny side down). If using foil, spray with vegetable oil cooking spray to prevent vegetables from sticking. In a large bowl, stir to combine the oil, cumin,

turmeric, salt and garlic. Add the chicken, turning to coat, and then transfer smooth side up to the baking sheet. Add the vegetables to the bowl and toss in the remaining spiced oil, then distribute them around the chicken pieces on the baking sheet. Season with freshly ground pepper. Sprinkle the grapes over the vegetables and roast about 5 minutes more, until the juices run clear when the chicken is pierced with the tip of a small sharp knife. Keep The Lights On Like most Americans, you’ve probably been living, learning and working from home more than ever, which means you need power all day long - for your HVAC system to your internet connection and, of course, your lights. On top of that, severe weather events, including everything from hurricanes to heat waves and more, are predicted to become even more frequent in coming years due to climate change. If you’re concerned about blackouts due to severe weather and power grid failures, you’re not alone - more people today are considering ways to keep their homes powered, no matter what happens. Thinking about getting a generator to help protect your home’s power in case of an outage or severe weather? Here’s what you need to know about whole home generators. How home generators work If you get a standby generator for your home, the unit is permanently installed and connected to your natural gas line or liquid propane fuel

source, along with an automatic transfer switch. When the system senses that your utility power is offline, the automatic transfer switch seamlessly shifts your selected electrical circuits and appliances to standby generator power. You don’t have to go outside or do anything with the generator. It’s set up to work automatically, within seconds, night or day - whether you’re home, or awake, or not. Are standby generators different from portable generators? Simply put, portable generators lack the power capability of standby home generators, and they do not turn on automatically. Portable generators are not permanently installed, and they always have to be manually started and set up. They typically run on gasoline and must be refueled every few hours to keep operating. In short, portable generators offer several benefits for uses beyond the home, but they’re not an ideal solution during power outages. For more information, visit BriggsAndStratton. com for an easy review of your home’s power needs.

Furry Friends

Did you know honey bees are responsible for over 35% of the foods you eat, as well as the honey you enjoy? Honey bees are vital to the health of the planet and to the food chain, as they are necessary for pollinating more than 90 food crops including fruits, vegetables and nuts - plus alfalfa, which is used as feed for the livestock that supply our meat and dairy. There are many ways you can enjoy the fruits of the honey bees’ labor, while also helping to support their habitats and ensuring they’ll be around for generations to come. The National Honey Board has partnered with registered dietitian Maggie Michalczyk, RDN, to bring you her favorite planet-friendly tips and ideas. Here are Michalczyk’s tips for enjoying and celebrating the hardworking pollinator. 1. Celebrate pollinator foods Honey bees are needed to pollinate over 90 crops. So the next time you are enjoying apples, avocados, cherries, almonds or sunflower seeds, you can celebrate the fact that all of these foods are made possible by hardworking honey bees.

2. Sweat for bees Movement is key to a balanced life. Skip the pesticides in your yard and pull weeds by hand instead. Then make sure to plant bee-friendly flowers and flowering herbs in your garden and yard. 3. Expand your produce palate Pollinators, including honey bees, are responsible for 1 in every 3 bites of food that everyone eats, including many fruits and vegetables. Eating a wide variety of produce plays a role in enhancing the diversity of your gut microbiome. 4. Work in daily natural energy boosters Consider a mid-afternoon break with a cup of tea sweetened with honey. Green and black tea both contain beneficial antioxidants, and honey is a 100% pure and natural energy booster. 5. Make it Mediterranean Take a page from the popular Mediterranean diet and fill your plate with whole grains, lean proteins like fish, unsaturated fats, fruits and veggies - and use honey whenever possible. Honey is traditionally part of the MediterraneanStyle Dietary Pattern, as recognized in the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Looking to move? For many reasons, now is a great time. Strategic planning and timely communication are a must in today’s market!

Give Blood

From surgeries to emergencies, life-saving therapeutics, and beyond, blood and plasma are essential for hospitals and health care centers to help patients. Unfortunately, experts report facilities throughout the country are facing critical shortages and are calling on more people - especially younger generations - to help by donating blood or plasma locally. There are many reasons why blood and plasma inventories have fallen so low. Thousands of blood drives were canceled due to COVID-19. Additionally, U.S. hospitals have seen an increase in trauma cases requiring transfusions. Compared with 2019, the demand for blood at trauma centers has increased 10%, escalating the urgent need for blood donations. Beyond current events, blood supplies in general are decreasing because the typical donor is aging and fewer young people are donating. Older generations like the baby boomers, adults 57 and older, are aging out of the donor pool and first-time donors aren’t replacing them at adequate rates.

A plentiful blood and plasma supply is important not only for accidents and injuries, but for a host of medical procedures. “Blood and plasma aren’t just used in emergencies. They are used to treat anything from injuries from a car accident to chronic illnesses like cancer to burn injuries. To ensure help is there when people need it, we have to have a stable supply of blood and plasma and the need has never been greater. We urgently need donors of all ages - and we need it now,” said Dr. Alexander Carterson, head of medical, scientific and clinical affairs for Abbott’s diagnostics business. Whether it’s a one-time need, or for ongoing lifesaving procedures, blood and plasma donations help make a difference for millions of Americans every year. “One donation can save up to three lives and that’s truly amazing. We are committed to raising awareness about the need for blood donors so that people can live their best lives,” Carterson added. Join the BE THE 1 movement and donate to be a part of the solution. Learn more about donation at www.bethe1donor.abbott.

DIY

The kitchen is famously the go-to room of the house where family and friends gather to spend time together, so it should be a space that you enjoy hanging out in. If your kitchen’s decor is starting to look a little tired, you can always freshen things up by adding modern and functional touches. Here are five ideas - from simple to complex - that can transform your kitchen from tired to top-notch. 1. Color your world Adding color doesn’t need to be expensive or time-consuming. For instance, small appliances are to kitchens what throw pillows are to couches. Look for small, countertop kitchen appliances with a color you love and put them on display. Dress up your floors with a colorful runner. Paint something - an accent wall, a nook, woodwork, or cabinets. 2. Warm up your countertops If you want to add a bit of natural warmth to your kitchen, consider butcher block countertops. Adding to the benefits of butcher block, the close grain of the wood provides a smooth,

scratch-resistant surface that’s easy to clean. 3. Make a cozy, intimate seating area Because people tend to congregate in the kitchen, invite them to stay awhile by installing a modern seating area. Get creative with counter seating, or carve out a cozy nook in a corner. Banquet seating or a bench at a windowside table can give your kitchen an inviting atmosphere. 4. Shed a new light on it Updating your light fixtures can make a nightand-day difference in the mood of your kitchen. The easiest to install is pendant lighting that you plug into the wall. Hang a hook from the ceiling and swoop the cord over it and voila, you’ve got modern lighting. 5. Put a spotlight on your kitchen floor Fresh flooring can greatly revitalize your kitchen, instantly sprucing up any dull decor with a timeless product that is resilient, waterproof, durable and attractive. Breathing new life into your kitchen can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. Start small and go big, or start big and accent with small touches of color. Make it yours, and make it inviting.
