On Our Cover
Veronica Madrigal, born and raised in Arizona, knows the beauty of strong roots and meaningful connections. After 33 years in her home state, she and her family discovered a sense of belonging in Marley Park. Although they’ve called the neighborhood home for four years, their story now spans across the Atlantic as they live in England, where her husband, Hector, is stationed with the U.S. Air Force.
Hector and Veronica’s journey is a remarkable one. Both came from stable careers in finance, with Veronica working remotely in the corporate financial sector. However, Hector felt a profound call to serve his country, a decision that led the family to leave behind a secure lifestyle to embrace the unpredictable yet rewarding life of a military family. “It’s been a wild journey,” Veronica shares, “but we’ve truly found a new respect for military families. Moving across the country—or in our case, to a new one—is not easy!”
The Madrigals’ journey hasn’t been without challenges, but they’ve had incredible support from their Marley Park community. Veronica fondly recalls the role their neighbors played in making their transition possible. Retired military families like Ken and Raquel offered advice and practical help during
their move, while Sonia and Joe provided unwavering prayers and encouragement. “Our neighbors showed us what true community looks like. They helped with home repairs when Hector was away and supported us every step of the way. They are the definition of what neighbors should be,” Veronica says with gratitude.
Despite being stationed in England until 2026, the Madrigals look forward to returning to Marley Park. Veronica speaks warmly of the neighborhood’s beauty, with its inviting homes and thoughtful landscaping, but it’s the people that make Marley Park home.
While overseas, the family stays busy. Their three children, aged 14, 11, and 9, are growing up amidst this grand adventure, and their poodle, Mocha, brings joy to their days. Veronica also nurtures her passion for photography through her business, Madrigal Moments Photography, capturing memories that reflect the heart of their journey.
For the Madrigals, Marley Park is more than a neighborhood—it’s a community that shaped their story and awaits their return. Until then, they hold onto the love and support they’ve found in this extraordinary corner of Arizona.
MPCA Election
The Marley Park Community Association (MPCA) is preparing for its 2025 annual election, where 3 Board of Directors seats and 3 Special Service Area Committee seats are open. To help residents meet the candidates and learn about their platforms, a Candidate Meet and Greet will be held Thursday, February 20th, from 6 to 8PM at the Heritage Club Parlor. This event allows community members to engage with candidates, ask questions, and understand their qualifications.
Mike Mitchell (Incumbent), a Marley Park property owner since 2010, is seeking re-election. As a parttime resident with six properties, he is committed to maintaining and improving special services. With extensive leadership experience, he has served on multiple HOA boards, including as President. Holding a master’s degree and having spent 15 years as a head college basketball coach, Mitchell possesses strong decision-making and leadership skills. Mitchell identifies financial sustainability as the SSA’s primary challenge, emphasizing the need to align service levels with financial capabilities. His expertise in budgeting, community management, and leadership makes him a strong candidate for continued service.
Jerry Mullen, a part-time Marley Park resident since 2012, also seeks a seat on the SSA Committee. Owning three properties within the special services area, he is deeply invested in the community. Mullen previously served a three-year term on the SSA Committee, gaining firsthand knowledge of the challenges in maintaining services amid rising costs. With an M.S. in Business and over 40 years as a business owner, Mullen is skilled in budgeting, financial planning, and personnel management. His leadership roles include serving as Athletic Director at Barton Community College and running his business, Mullen Sports. His top priority is ensuring essential services, repairs, and replacements continue despite increasing expenses.
The Candidate Meet and Greet is an excellent opportunity for residents to hear directly from the candidates and make informed voting decisions. Community members are encouraged to attend, ask questions, and discuss the future of Marley Park’s Special Service Area. For more information, contact the Marley Park Community Association office.

Spring Break
A Parent’s Guide to Making the Most of March
Spring Break is upon us, and parents across America are experiencing a familiar mix of excitement and trepidation. Whether you’re planning an extravagant getaway or embracing a cozy staycation, here’s how to ensure your time off becomes a memorable adventure rather than a logistical challenge.
Finding the sweet spot between structure and flexibility is key during this break. While children need time to decompress from their academic and social pressures, maintaining some routine helps everyone stay grounded. Striking this balance can help foster the rejuvenating atmosphere your family needs.
For those staying close to home, local attractions offer endless possibilities for enrichment and entertainment. Museums, science centers, and cultural institutions provide immersive experiences that can fill a day with wonder and learning. The Phoenix Children’s Museum, for instance, stands out as a particularly engaging destination where young minds can explore and create.
If travel fits your budget, countless destinations offer activities that appeal to both adults and children. While theme parks remain a popular choice, consider exploring state parks for an outdoor adventure that naturally bridges generational gaps. These pristine spaces offer everything from gentle nature walks to challenging hikes, creating opportunities for family bonding in the great outdoors.
Remember, there’s no obligation to fill every moment with structured activities. Unscheduled time is equally valuable, allowing children to pursue their interestswhether that’s diving into a good book, enjoying video games, or simply relaxing with their favorite shows. This downtime often creates natural opportunities for family connection without the usual daily pressures.
For families with teenagers, Spring Break can be an exercise in collaborative planning. Consider inviting your teens to help shape the week’s agenda. This approach not only acknowledges their growing independence but also helps create activities that truly resonate with everyone involved.
Above all, remember that Spring Break serves as a refreshing pause before the final academic push. Whether you’re exploring a new city or marathoning all 19 hours and 39 minutes of Harry Potter (yes, that’s the actual runtime!), focus on quality time with your family. The most cherished memories often stem not from elaborate plans but from shared experiences and genuine connections.

Perfect Parks
My family realized we always go to the same parks, so we wanted to explore more of the ones around Marley Park and see what each one has to offer. I decided to start with Legacy Park, so here’s my review!
Legacy Park is a great spot that reminds me of a school playground. It’s perfect for playing sports and just having fun with friends. The park is on the newer side of Marley Park, at 145th Ave and Via Del Oro.
The playground is mostly designed for kids ages 5 to 11. The first thing I noticed about it was the color— most of the equipment is a neon greenish-yellow. There’s a lot to do! There’s a swing set with the bigkid swings, and there are climbing areas where you can practice your balance and strength. One of my favorite things is the tethered lily pad-like platforms. They’re connected to each other, so you can hop from one to the next, kind of like walking on floating pads. It’s super fun and a little challenging!
In the center of the park, there’s a big white gazebo. It really stands out, almost like a landmark. On either side of it, there are huge grass fields that are perfect for playing sports. I think this park is best for sports because of all the open space. You can play soccer,
throw a football, and I’ve even seen people practicing baseball with tees and a net. My favorite thing to do is play laser tag with friends! The wide-open areas make it easy to run around without worrying about bumping into anything.
This park is a great place to get exercise, whether you’re playing on the playground or running on the fields. But it’s also a nice spot to just sit and talk with friends. There are big steps leading down to the fields on either side of the gazebo, which are great for sitting. Plus, there are giant shade trees around the edges of the park where you could sit with a picnic blanket.
To me, Legacy Park is one of the best spots on this side of Marley Park if you want to have fun. Whether you’re playing sports, swinging on the swings, or just hanging out, it’s a perfect mix of space and fun. I think anyone would have a great time here!

Home Sweet Home
Selling a house can be a complicated process, and many homeowners make costly mistakes when they don’t adjust their expectations or strategies to fit the current market. With more homes available for sale and buyers becoming more selective due to tighter budgets, understanding the market is crucial. Unfortunately, some sellers haven’t caught up with these changes, resulting in missteps that can impact their sale.
One of the most common mistakes sellers make is pricing their home too high. Research from John Burns Real Estate Consulting (JBREC) and Keeping Current Matters (KCM) shows that many sellers struggle with setting the right price, and overpricing is a frequent issue. Some homeowners price their property high in the hopes of leaving room to negotiate. However, today’s buyers are more cautious, and an overly high price can drive them away, especially with high mortgage rates. This can lead to price cuts and missed opportunities.
Another mistake sellers often make is skipping necessary repairs. Small issues like a leaky faucet or a squeaky door might seem insignificant, but they can be red flags to buyers. Potential buyers may worry
these problems indicate larger, more expensive issues that haven’t been addressed. This can lead to lower offers or buyers requesting concessions. Working with an experienced agent will help you prioritize repairs before listing your home. Minor upgrades can improve the appeal of your property and help you sell at a higher price.
Refusing to negotiate is also a common mistake. With affordability being a concern for many buyers today, they may submit lower-than-expected offers. Sellers may take this personally, but it’s important to stay focused on selling your home. With more homes on the market, buyers often have more bargaining power and may request repairs or closing cost assistance. Being open to negotiations can help seal the deal and prevent a sale from falling through.
The biggest mistake of all is not working with a real estate agent. An agent’s expertise can help you avoid the pricing, repair, and negotiation mistakes that can derail your sale. Start your selling journey with the right plan and the right agent.
