From Me To You... It is now 3:51 a.m. I have been trying to sleep since 1:26 a.m. and I hate to give up but I have things to do tomorrow - today really. I never have a problem falling asleep but staying asleep, that’s the challenge. I can be woken by any of a number of little things. From needing to go to the bathroom, a storm (thank you monsoon season), leg cramps (my particular favorite), or even a dog licking his paw by my bed. At this point if a moth flaps its wings outside my bedroom window I think I would be up.

fact that this may be my life for a while.

Luckily I have a job where I can set my own hours and take that nap, but most people cannot. Unless you live in Spain. Now they have the right idea - shut down the country for two or more hours every afternoon and take a siesta. Apparently it actually makes people more effective and productive at work and I can see how that would be true. I maintain that nothing good comes out of my office after 11 a.m. No matter how much I try and drag it out there is no way for me to be productive unless I nap.

Once awake I rarely get back to sleep before 4 or 5 a.m., only to be awakened once more by the household starting their day at 6... I have tried any number of sleep aids to nod off again, apps that soothe, candy that crushes, books, meditation, muscle relaxation techniques and more - but once my mind is up it is up.

I think I should look at this insomnia as my body making me take afternoon naps without guilt. On that note, it is now 3:05 p.m. and I think the couch is calling my name... see you in a couple of hours!

I thought of starting a group online where others could share their stories and perhaps band together to solve crimes during the night. What else should I be doing at 3 a.m.? I could always go to my office (conveniently located downstairs) and get some work done, but then my day is messed up and it will just encourage the perpetuation of the problem into the next night. I will report back tomorrow and let’s see what happens...

Editor, Main Street magazine info@estrellapublishing.com 623-594-9283

So last night I bit the bullet and took a sleep aid before going to bed. You know the one, it promises to make you go to sleep and stay asleep, waking the next day bright and early, ready to conquer the world! So? Well I did fall asleep and, although I woke briefly, I went back to the land of nod quickly and easily. The problem is I am not bright eyed and bushy tailed. I am woozy and lethargic. My ridiculously strong coffee helped for about half an hour but now I feel the wool gathering in my head again. I definitely see a nap in my near future. I guess I will chalk that one up to ‘buyer beware’ and go back to relaxation techniques and accepting the Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Edible Gardens People have become more health-conscious in the last year, seeking relaxing activities and projects that give them a sense of accomplishment. According to the National Gardening Association, 67% of Americans are growing or planning to grow their own fruits, herbs and vegetables in 2021, and there are more than 18.3 million new gardeners trying their hand at growing their own flowers or produce. While growing your own edible garden can be exciting, there are a few things to consider before you start. It can all feel a bit overwhelming, but with tips from Garrett Magee, the design mastermind behind the landscape design firm Manscapers, you can create the ultimate edible garden - no matter the time of year or where you live. Here are a few suggestions to help your garden sprout: 1) Think about what you already eat Before you start digging, plan your edible garden by looking inside your fridge to see what kinds of produce you buy from the grocery store

Have you experienced any of the following:

for inspiration. By growing fruits and veggies you like, you don’t have to worry about them going to waste. If you have kids, grow the fruits and veggies they enjoy too.

2) Start small When building your edible garden, start small by growing plants out of a window box or small garden bed. As you get more comfortable, slowly expand and scale up the following year. Fruit and vegetable gardens are typically low maintenance, but they’re never no maintenance, so be patient and stay on a regular schedule you’ll develop your green thumb in no time. 3) Grow a vertical garden if you live in a big city If you live in an urban environment or don’t have a traditional back yard, every square inch of space is precious. However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to garden. Focus on growing your produce up rather than out with tools like a garden trellis, which works well for supporting high-climbing plants like cucumbers. 4) Go green For the quickest turnaround on your homegrown crops, focus on leafy greens like lettuce, kale, spinach and herbs. These vegetables are easy to grow, whether in a window box or a big backyard garden. Plus, you can continuously harvest them throughout the season. Important tip: When harvesting leafy greens, use scissors to cut off the outer leaves at the base of the stem. That way, they can grow new leaves in the center.

Counterfeit Pills Marrisa received a call from a family member telling her a picture of her 15-year-old son Issaiah is circulating on Snapchat, and he’s passed out. The post said he took a Percocet. She got a call informing her what hospital her son was at, and when she arrived at the hospital, the doctors said we could not find Percocet in his system. We are pretty sure your son ingested fentanyl, and he is not going to make it. Marrisa felt her heartbreak as she saw her son’s future fade away and the grief of knowing she would never hear his voice again and wishing she had a chance to warn him of the dangers of counterfeit pills. Counterfeit pills are just like counterfeit money. They look like the real thing, and in fact, you cannot tell the difference. Most, if not all, street drugs are now laced with this deadly killer, fentanyl, a synthetic opioid similar to morphine but up to 100 times more potent and highly addictive. Think of a grain of salt. A standard dose of fentanyl would be equivalent to 5 grains of salt. 12 grains of salt will cause an overdose, and in many cases, death. These counterfeits

· · · · · · · ·

are especially dangerous because the amount of fentanyl varies from pill to pill. They are mixed in five-gallon buckets, pressed into pills, and find their way across the border into our communities. You could take that one pill thinking it is Percocet, Vicodin, Oxycodone, or hydrocodone. But instead, it’s a counterfeit pill with a lethal dose of fentanyl. “Blues,” the street name for counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl (because of their color), have become common. You may also hear them referred to as “M30s” for the stamp commonly found on each pill. The efforts of the Way Out West Coalition include sharing stories much like Marrisa’s to create awareness and educate parents and youth about underage drinking, substance use, and especially the rise of fentanyl. We share these stories through our various social media platforms. We receive countless comments from people who have lost multiple friends, family members, and children to counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl. Marissa would give anything to have the chance to go back in time to have that conversation with Issaiah. She would tell him how much she loves him and that he needs to know how dangerous it can be to take just one pill, because that one pill can kill.

September 2021

The Bug Guy After a long, hot summer and a stormy monsoon season, fall can’t come soon enough in the west valley. Before we know it, our days are shorter and kids are spending more time playing outdoors. Unfortunately, the change in weather also brings an unwelcome pest – swarmers, also known as flying termites. Prime termite season runs from the onset of monsoons through spring, when swarmers emerge to mate and establish new colonies. Termites particularly love vulnerable residential properties and can eat a home out from under its owners, often without them even knowing until much damage has been done. Termites can chew through wood, flooring and wallpaper undetected, compromising the structural stability of a home within several years, depending on the species. Termites cause $5 billion worth of property damage annually. Luckily, there are many steps homeowners can take to help prevent termites from infesting their property. Here are 10 tips from the National Pest

Management Association (NPMA) to protect your greatest investment from termites: • Eliminate or reduce moisture in and around the home, which termites need to thrive. • Repair leaking faucets, water pipes and exterior AC units. • Divert water away from the house through properly functioning downspouts, gutters and splash blocks. • Routinely inspect the foundation of a home for signs of mud tubes, uneven or bubbling paint and wood that sounds hollow when tapped. • Monitor all exterior areas of wood, including windows, doorframes and skirting boards for any noticeable changes. • Maintain an 18-inch gap between soil and any wood portions of your home. • Consider scheduling a professional inspection annually. Termite damage is not covered by most homeowners’ insurance policies. • Termites cannot be controlled with doit-yourself measures. If you suspect a termite infestation, contact a licensed pest professional immediately. These helpful homeowner tips were provided by Estrella Mountain Pest Control and the National Pest Management Association.

Furry Friends Last August, we lost Ellie, our 14-year-old Brittany, and had no desire to find a new furry companion right away. I knew we would have another someday but vowed that the next dog would have to find us. And find us she did. We stopped by to drop off some of Ellie’s things that we no longer needed and heard Mercedes’s story. She was discovered under an abandoned house with seven puppies. All skin and bones, loaded with fleas, ticks and worms, she had precious little milk left to feed her babies. Thank goodness Community Paws was able to rescue and help this sweet family. We immediately fell in love with Mercedes. She was beautiful, mellow and so eager to gain affection; she seemed a perfect fit for our lifestyle. We started taking her for walks. Then we brought her home for a couple of hours at a time, and within a few days, we finalized her adoption. Sadi (short for Mercedes) has been with us for a year now, and we have never regretted our decision. We have come to realize that she rescued us as much as we rescued her. She filled a void that we barely knew we had.

14 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Deciding to adopt is a big decision for anyone. Still, we realized that giving a rescue a second chance at a better life far outweighed any concerns we might have had. I have spoken with others about their adopted pets, and they all share one common thought: Rescued dogs (and cats) have so much love to give. And they do so unconditionally and without judgment. They seem to recognize how lucky they are when, in truth, we, the adoptive families, are the lucky ones. Won’t you please consider adopting or fostering a furry friend this month? You can view some of the animals that are looking for forever homes on our website at www.CommunityPaws.org. Any pet you adopt will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped by a veterinarian. Community Paws provides this service to help with some of the upfront costs of adding a new four-legged member to your family. All these pets need is you to change their world forever. Not only that, you’ll get a new best friend out of the deal. Seriously, what could be better than that? Submitted for Community Paws by Lyndie Mason Warner, a Verrado resident.

5 Benefits of Teaching Children to Garden Break out the seeds and gloves, because Arizona gardening season is arriving soon! Here are five benefits of showing your children how to garden. 1. Gets children outside and active. Digging, planting and watering on a sunny afternoon are terrific ways to get some exercise while enjoying the beautiful weather. 2. Children learn about science and the environment. This is an excellent opportunity to teach your child some basics of biology, such as how the sun helps plants to grow, how plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis and how vegetation contributes to a healthy environment. 3. Teaches children how vegetables and fruits grow. Growing fruits and vegetables gives your child a look into small-scale farming and

®

may encourage an appreciation for the process that brings produce to grocery stores. 4. Encourages healthy eating. Planting a vegetable garden can lead to healthier meal times because children are more likely to try vegetables they have grown and veggies usually taste better when they are fresh from the garden. 5. Inspires responsibility and a strong work ethic. Maintaining a garden can help children understand what the rewards of hard work are and how taking care of something requires diligence and persistence. Money Matters It’s helpful that you begin thinking about retirement income well before you actually retire. Many people don’t – in fact, 61% of retirees wish they had done better at planning for the financial aspects of their retirement, according to an Edward Jones/Age Wave study titled Retirement in the Time of Coronavirus: What a Difference a Year Makes. Fortunately, there’s much you can do to create and manage your retirement income.

Here are a few suggestions: • Consider ways to boost income. Can you afford to delay taking Social Security so your monthly checks will be bigger? Can you increase your contributions to your 401(k) or similar employersponsored retirement plan, including taking advantage of catch-up contributions if you’re age 50 or older? Should you consider adding products that can provide you with an income stream that can potentially last your lifetime? • Calculate your expenses. How much money will you need each year during your retirement? The answer depends somewhat on your goals. For example, if you plan to travel extensively, you may need more income than someone who stays close to home. And no matter how you plan to spend your days in retirement, you’ll need to budget for health care expenses. Many people underestimate what they’ll need, but these costs can easily add up to several thousand dollars a year, even with Medicare.

• Review your investment mix. It’s always a good idea to review your investment mix at least once a year, but it’s especially important to analyze your investments in the years immediately preceding your retirement. At this point, you may need to adjust the mix to lower the risk level. However, you probably won’t want to sell all your growth-oriented investments and replace them with more conservative ones – even during retirement, you’ll likely need some growth potential in your portfolio to help you stay ahead of inflation. • Create a sustainable withdrawal rate. Once you’re retired, you will likely need to start taking money from your IRA and 401(k) or similar plan. But it’s important not to take too much out in your early years as a retiree, since you don’t want to risk outliving your income. By planning ahead, and making the right moves, you can boost your confidence in your ability to maintain enough income to last throughout your retirement. And with a sense of financial security, you’ll be freer to enjoy an active lifestyle during your years as a retiree.
