From Me To You... Does anyone else have a hard time writing 2021 as the current year? I catch myself every time I have to write a check or note the date. It seems as though I didn’t get to use 2020 much so switching to 2021 seems... disloyal? We all lost so much last year, time is one of the smallest to think about but perhaps one of the biggest to wrap our heads around. We not only lost time, but all the things we were planning on using that time for. Momentous birthdays were swept under the rug. Graduations were virtual. Time itself seemed to stretch and bend. The world was at once creeping along at a snail’s pace and also racing towards some unknown destination. Time is not just a space from one moment to another, it is also something you can give. Time to heal, time to think, time to grow. The grace of time to make mistakes and learn. Time to become something more, something better. As a parent there are many moments where the gift of time is all that your child needs to figure out a way forwards. I try to model that behavior as my own children become older. The impulse as a Mom is to rush forwards and help, ease the way and prevent our offspring from making easily avoidable mistakes. I think that is not doing them any favors. If they do not fail, how can they learn to overcome life’s trials and tribulations?

One day you will not be there to jump in front of them when a problem arises, and if they have not learned to cope on their own already it will be that much harder without guidance. I have a friend who is struggling with her health. She probably doesn’t have much time left on this Earth, and watching her vibrancy slipping away is almost unbearable. Her time is cut short and there is no fairness in that. Her time to live, watch her children grow and thrive. Her time to age gracefully, see the grey hair and wrinkles mark the passing of time. Her time to be. I am a planner and a do-er. I want to rush in and organize her life and tie up all the threads I see hanging around her. Things she should do for her family, things she should do for herself. But. It is not my life and not my time to decide how to use. The best gift I can give her is the time to do what she wants. To spend or squander the time she has remaining in whichever way she chooses. And that is hard. But it is right. I urge you all to think about the time we have been given and decide how you want to spend it. Otherwise it will just rush past, and by the time you decide it may be too late.

The Bug Guy It is nice to see people outside and at the parks enjoying time with family and friends, it shows how resilient and adaptable we are. As the COVID 19 virus runs its course, and the vaccination process continues to accelerate, its good to see us all coming together to see this through. As a society we have overcome and accomplished so many things, and we have so much more to do, I know we can and will beat this too. I challenge all of us to go do something nice for someone without any expectations. Spring is here and that means the bugs are all out and ready to invade our homes! Crickets, Scorpions, Spiders, and a wide range of insects, including termites! Crickets are an annoying with their loud mating call, primarily used in the dark. Crickets are best controlled outside, as soon as they get inside, they are much more challenging to get rid of. We have several different species of crickets here in the valley. All crickets are food for scorpions.

Scorpions are indigenous to the Sonoran Desert. We have two primary species of scorpions here, Bark scorpion and the Sonoran Desert scorpion. The Bark Scorpion is unique as it is the only scorpion in North America than can be deadly. The bark scorpion can grow to approximately 2.5-3 inches in length, they are a uniform straw color and have a distinctive tail that is longer than the length of their body and very thin. The Sonoran Desert Scorpion can grow up to 10 inches in length, but the more commonly found ones are up to 4-5 inches long. They have a straw colored body with brown striations across their back, and their tail is about ¾ quarters the length of their body, the width of the tail is about 1/3rd the width of their body. Their sting is equivalent to a hornet. We have approximately 200 hundred species of spider in the Sonoran Desert. The most notable being the Black Widow, this spider is very reclusive and prefers our outdoor environment. It likes dark and tight locations to build its nest, like in the weep screed along your exterior foundation wall. We have a recluse family spider here as well, the Desert Recluse, it looks like a brown recluse, but has a less aggressive venom. The Desert Recluse is also a very reclusive spider. Parental Alert What was your world like when you were ten or fifteen years old? How did you spend time with friends? What was neighborhood safety like? Did you have a cell phone? Did you have a smartphone? Was there even anything such as internet safety? Was there an app for that? As parents, we must make sure we do everything we can to prepare our children for the negative influences they will encounter as they grow up. Chances are, you also monitor their text messages and phone calls. But…do you know what apps they are using? Do you know how to use the apps they use? Sometimes we must protect our children from situations that we as parents have no prior experience with or even knowledge of, and it is up to us to make sure we do our due diligence to learn.

There is a new drug dealer in town, and it lives on your teen’s smartphone. Take Snapchat, for example; as a parent, I cannot monitor anything my teen does, who they talk to, or what they say. Did you ever test out how precisely accurate the location GPS is? We’re talking right down to the last foot of where you are in real-time. Due Diligence: We invite you to virtually join the Way Out West Coalition on Tuesday, April 13, at 12:30 p.m., to learn how any teen can use social media to obtain illicit drugs. What is even scarier is almost all street drugs are laced with a deadly substance called fentanyl. You must register for this free event by using the QR Code on this page.   Author Joe Tracey is Youth4Youth Program Director and member of the WOW Coalition For additional information visit http://www. wowcoalition.org info@wow.coalition.org

Parental Alert: Maybe you have heard the latest news about how teens use social media to access any drug by simply using their social media. Or have you heard about teens who have overdosed and died from counterfeit pills? You probably know that seventy (70) Arizona teens died from unintentional drug overdoses in 2020.

Encourage Environmental Responsibility This month we celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd! Conserving the environment is a priority, and helping to foster an eco-friendly mindset in children is more important than ever. Here are five ways to encourage environmental responsibility. 1. Teach your children to garden. Gardening is an excellent way to teach your child some basics of biology, such as how the sun helps plants grow, how plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis and how vegetation contributes to a healthy environment. 2. Enjoy some fun outdoor activities. Creating a wildflower scrapbook or going on an outdoor scavenger hunt may help your child appreciate all the beauty, wonder and fun the environment has to offer. 3. Go for a hike. Whether you walk through the woods or just around a local park, hiking

lets children experience the environment while getting some exercise. The internet can be a terrific resource for finding hiking trails close to home. 4. Start at home. Recycling and conserving electricity and water at home with your child can go a long way toward preserving the environment. You can even make a game of counting how many different items you can recycle every week. 5. Make something new with something old. Cardboard tubes, empty milk jugs and many other items can be given new life with a little creativity. Let your imaginations run wild and create something fun! Submitted by Nicole Bigham, On-site Owner, The Goddard School in Buckeye-Verrado

We help children explore and discover their interests through play in a safe environment. Highly trained teachers gently guide and encourage children every step of the way as they grow, develop and achieve important milestones.

Green Thumb Gardening saw record growth in 2020 and experts expect many more people will be digging in the dirt again this spring. From “Victory” vegetable gardens to balcony containers, outdoor gathering spaces and mood-lifting landscapes, gardening is providing an outlet during the pandemic. With all that expansion and enthusiasm comes the need for inspiration and advice.

The National Garden Bureau was founded in 1920 in the wake of World War I, when an increasing number of suburbanites needed basic backyard gardening instruction. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to provide education to motivate people to enjoy plants, from indoor houseplants to outdoor gardens.

one edible and one shrub as their ‘Year of the’ crops. One of the more popular picks for 2021 is The Year of the Sunflower. If there was ever a time where we needed to add some sunshine to the world, it’s now. Sunflowers add bright, cheery color to the garden, and they’re extremely easy to grow. They’re simple to start from seed, or you can purchase new potted varieties that promise multiple blooms throughout the season. Planting sunflowers, hibiscus, hyacinth, monarda and other easy-togrow flowers can help add color and curb appeal, but they also add natural beauty to outdoor gathering spaces, another COVID-19 world trend.

Life Choices

Do you want to be healthier and have a new outlook on life? Making your health a priority may seem complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. Follow these easy steps to get you started on your health journey. Drink More Water While you may be tired of being told to drink more water, it is essential for your body and can promote your health in many different ways. Staying hydrated can help lower your blood pressure, aid digestion and improve your physical performance. Drinking water can also help with weight loss, whether consumed before a meal or replacing sugary drinks and sodas. According to a 2018 study, dehydration can also lead to depression, proving that water benefits are not just physical.

Prioritize Mental Health After a challenging year like 2020, it is essential to maintain your mental health as much as you do your physical health. Health and wellness counselors can help, too. Programs like InSHAPE® from Southwest Behavioral & Health Services promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. They allow participants to hold themselves accountable with weekly sessions and quarterly assessments with free, certified health mentors. Health programs like InSHAPE go deeper by not only making participants more mindful of their health choices but boosting their confidence and improving their self-esteem as well. These improvements can significantly impact other parts of their life. Members have said that the program has helped them beat addiction, pursue a career, and feel physically and mentally healthy. Eat Breakfast Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s not just for kids. Regardless of your age, breakfast is vital for brainpower, can improve weight control, and makes you less hungry throughout the day. The most significant benefit of eating breakfast is the energy boost. While it can be hard to get out of bed in the morning, having breakfast helps fight off sluggishness and jumpstarts your day. While you may feel like you never have enough time for breakfast in the morning, there is an abundance of easy and fast breakfast recipes available online. Your health can be tricky to navigate, and significant changes can be overwhelming. Remember to start small and build your way up over time. If you need any help along the way, we’re here for you. Submitted by Marcie Herzog, director of highrisk populations and the InSHAPE program at Southwest Behavioral & Health Services. More information about SB&H is available at www. sbhservices.org.

Furry Friends Did you know that heartworm infection in animals has been diagnosed in all 50 states? The American Heartworm Society defines heartworm as “a disease cause by footlong worms that live in the hearts, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other bodily organs.”

Heartworm is passed from host to host by mosquitos, and all it takes is one small bite from the insect and the parasite can enter your pet’s bloodstream. Heartworm disease can affect an animal’s health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone, so it is important to prevent the disease to give your pet companion the best chance of living a long and healthy life. The American Heartworm Society recommends annual screening and year-round monthly heartworm medication for all pets - dogs, as well as cats. About 25% of heartworm-infected cats reportedly were “indoor only”, so regardless of lifestyle, even cats need to be on heartworm preventative medication. During this month of National Heartworm Awareness, we wanted you to know that each pet rescued by Verrado’s Community Paws has not only been dewormed, but microchipped and spayed or neutered by a veterinarian. That gets your pet off to a good start and then it’s important for you to provide

monthly preventative medication from your veterinarian and have your pet tested annually. Community Paws has had an extremely busy beginning to the new year, rescuing multiple animals (including pets with severe injuries that required expensive surgery), and deworming, vaccinating, chipping and finding homes for numerous stray and abandoned pets. If you can find it in your heart to help, please go to www. communitypaws.org to discover ways that you can donate. Better yet, why not choose to adopt one of our rescues? Don’t forget to visit The Village Green on Saturday, April 17 to view the Pet Portraits created by local artists of all ages and skill level. Notice: Junior Division’s monthly meetings have been postponed until further notice. Submitted by Lyndie Mason Warner, a Verrado resident, for Community Paws
