From Me To You... Have you heard of the Sandwich Generation? It sounds like a great place to be, right? Grilled cheese, or ham and cheddar on wheat bread with a pickle on the side? Actually it is none of those. What it does involve is having children who are growing up (or have grown and fled the nest) then all of a sudden, your reliably independent parents slip and break a hip, or they don’t seem to remember like they used to, or they just need you to help them get by with daily tasks. You are sandwiched in between both generations, taking on the burden - sometimes all at once - of caring for everyone. It is a tough spot to be in, not one that most of us prepare for, and not one that most of our parents desire either. The awkward conversations arise. Who tells Dad he should not be driving anymore? Is someone able to help Mom make sure she takes her medication? Did anyone mention plans for later life? Is there money put aside for long term care? Is there a will? Did anyone talk to Mom and Dad about funerals, or cremation?

I have had most of these conversations with my parents and my in-laws in the last few months. Some of them out of necessity and some so we can all be prepared. Let me tell you, it is not easy. Then, just when you think you have it all locked in place, the future you were preparing for may end up not being the one that comes about. My mother has always planned on aging in place. She has a chair lift so she can get to her room, a life alert device so she can call for help if necessary, a cleaning service to keep up with the housework and a local meal delivery service so her freezer is fully stocked. Then there are the friends who pop by to check on her and keep her spirits up should she feel lonely. Sounds perfect, right? Well all of this was premeditated on her declining physically. The problem that is beginning to arise is that due to Long Covid (the lasting, nasty effects of the disease), she is facing other challenges. My sharpas-a-tack mother is losing words, and it is driving her crazy. She is most likely having mini strokes causing the memory and coherence issues, and that is creating a situation we did not anticipate. How long can she stay in her perfect home? That is a question I am having to come to terms with. The future we all planned together has gone and a new alternative is before us. We will navigate it, sandwiched between other responsibilities and the need to parent our parents. What I would like you to come away from this letter with, is the understanding that planning is key. Not just for the obvious things, but for other eventualities. If you have a resolution this year that you follow through on, it should be this. Plan your estate. I don’t care if you are 24 or 74, you need to let people know what your wishes are- in every eventuality you can imagine. Start a conversation with your loved ones and take some of that burden away from them - you can even bring sandwiches.

Plasma Donation Throughout the past year, you may have heard about plasma in terms of its potential use in treating COVID-19. However, for more than 80 years, plasma has been a lifeline for thousands of people who live with rare and chronic complex conditions. Even with the global pandemic shedding light on the role of plasma in fighting disease, many people may not know how thousands around the country rely on plasma every day. Here are five key reasons to consider donating plasma today. 1. Plasma is used to make life-saving medicine Plasma carries out a variety of functions in the body, including helping the body fight disease. Plasma donations are processed into life-saving medicine for people with rare and chronic conditions including immunodeficiency disorders. Often, there are no alternative treatments for these conditions. Plasma donations are life-changing and provide an opportunity for patients around the country to live a happier and healthier life. 2. Plasma cannot be manufactured in a lab Even with the scientific advances in the health care industry, medicine developed from plasma can only be made from plasma donated from healthy adults. Plasma cannot be manufactured in a lab or any other artificial environment. Because of this, plasma has become a scarce yet life-changing resource for people who rely on these plasma-based medicines.

less time. Because the body quickly replenishes the plasma removed during the donation process, healthy individuals may donate as often as twice in a seven-day period, with at least one day between donations. To learn more about the donation process visit www.biolifeplasma.com. 4. Many individuals are eligible to donate plasma To donate plasma, an individual must be at least 18 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and pass all other required donor eligibility criteria to protect the donor’s health and safety of the plasma. Healthy individuals who are eligible to donate their plasma can do so, regardless of their race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. 5. There is an urgent need for plasma donations With plasma donations lower than usual through the pandemic and the demand for medicine developed from plasma growing worldwide, the need for plasma is more urgent than ever. Global demand for these therapies has increased over the past 20 years - and continues to grow due to more rare diseases being identified as well as more patients being diagnosed. Everyone has the power to make a difference through plasma donation and potentially help save lives. In addition to potentially making a positive impact on someone’s life, plasma donors are compensated in recognition of the time, commitment and the effort required for their donation.

3. The plasma donation process is safe and fast Thousands of people donate plasma safely every day. Donating plasma is a low-risk procedure with minimal or no side effects. On a donor’s first visit to a plasma donation center, the whole process, including a physical examination, medical screening and the plasma donation, usually takes about two hours. Future visits take 6 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Newbie-Doobie-Do While you are eagerly awaiting your new baby, your older child may be feeling a whole swirl of emotions—including feeling a little left out. So, in addition to preparing for the “newbie,” now is the time to reinforce your child’s sense of belonging. As basic as it may seem, take some extra time to reassure your child that they will have just as meaningful a place in the family after the new baby arrives—and in fact, even more so since they will now get to be a big brother/sister! Be prepared to talk about specific highlights and positive ways in which your child will be included, from helping to care for the new baby, to having someone to share the fun with, etc. If you have a sibling, share with your child some of your fun memories of growing up with a brother or sister.

Be sure to involve your child in the preparations for the new baby—have them create something special to hang up in the new baby’s room, or let them help paint and decorate the baby’s room. Equally as important, be sure to make some extra special quality time for you and your child to bond—have a little picnic in the park, cuddle up for story time or bake up a batch of your child’s favorite cookies. Focus your attention only on him or her and steer clear of talk of the new baby during this quality time. Let your child know that these one-on-one gettogethers will continue even once the new baby has arrived—and be sure to follow through. Furry Friends Welcome to 2022! As we begin the new year, Community Paws would like to thank our wonderful community. Your contributions to our organization are greatly appreciated by donating your time, participating in one of our events or fundraising drives, or fostering/adopting one of our pets in need. What better way to start out a new year than to add a furry member to your family? Please visit CommunityPaws.org and consider adopting or fostering one of our pets in need. Each pet is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped. They just need you to live the life they deserve. The weather in January is generally sunny with comfortable daytime temps and little rain, which makes it the ideal month to get outside with your four-legged companion. Here in Verrado, there are a lot of options: 1. Explore over 21 miles of walking paths and 78 neighborhood parks. Maps are available on the Verrado residents’ page.

2. Stop by our booth at the Farmer’s Market in the town square any Sunday until April. We’d love to meet you and your furry friend. 3. Take your pup to Verrado’s Barketside Dog Park in the Marketside District. Residents can get directions and request the gate code on the residents’ page under the My Community> Verrado Amenities tabs. If you would like to explore a little farther afield, there are plenty of dog-friendly day trips for you and your best friend to check out: 1. Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, Gilbert. This 110-acre wildlife is about an hour from Verrado and is a pleasant way to spend a sunny January day with your leashed pooch. Find info at gilbertaz.gov under the Parks and Recreation tab. 2. Sedona Red Rock Adventures offers a 10% discount when you bring Fido. Enter “dogfriendly” when making your online reservation at sedonaredrockadventures.com. 3. Goldfield Ghost Town, Apache Junction. Pan for gold, tour the mine, attend a chili cookoff and ride the only operational narrow-gauge railroad in Arizona, all with your best furry pal by your side. goldfieldghosttown.com 4. Prescott is about 1-1/2 hours from Verrado and is a very dog-friendly town. People- and dog-watch from a bench on the courthouse square and then dine at one of the dogfriendly restaurants. prescott-az.gov Submitted for Community Paws by Lyndie Mason Warner, a Verrado resident.

The Bug Guy As I look back on where we were last January, I am humbled by how far we have come, and how much we have overcome. COVID-19 and its variants have touched our lives in ways we never saw coming, my family has suffered through this, as have a lot of yours too. Together we have risen to the challenge, and I believe that we are on the climb out of this COVID event. Together there is nothing we can’t accomplish! Together we will beat this! Together we will look back on this and say, “you can’t beat us”. Together we will prevail! While we can prevail and overcome as a society, other species are also looking to prevail. Specifically, rodents, rats, and mice are very prevalent right now. With a mild fall and a mild winter, we can expect to see an increase in vermin activity. Here area few signs to look for:

Multiple burrow holes in your yard Chewed patio furniture cushions Rodent droppings on your porch or patio

These rodents find habitats in and around your home. The following are some typical nesting examples: 1. Pack rats like to nest at ground level, around BBQ grills, pool equipment, and other items that can appear to be a safe place. Nests are often comprised of bits of cactus, pieces of cloth or material, almost anything that they can use to create a comfortable habitat. 2. We also see mice nesting in patio furniture cushions and inside umbrellas that have been stored for the winter. Mice can also nest in your attic or garage, winter makes attics prime real estate for mice. 3. We are seeing an increasing rise in another rodent species, Pocket Gophers. These gopher’s burrow and leave a small entry hole approximately 2-3 inches in diameter. These holes are generally close to a large rock or other landscape feature. 4. While we also have Kangaroo rats as another of our desert dwelling rodents, they are not a common occurrence. Kangaroo rats typically nest in low ground bushes. Look around your home and property for these signs and potential habitats. If you suspect that you have a rodent infestation, it is in your best interest to call a professional exterminator for an inspection and to determine the correct course of action to address the infestation. Covid Tests

When you think about efforts to fight the spread of COVID-19, vaccinations, hand washing and masking likely come to mind. However, one important effort that must remain the first line of defense is effective testing. Testing, combined with other defensive measures, is essential to keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe. The two main types of tests authorized for detecting COVID-19 are polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and antigen tests. Here is what you need to know about both: Antigen tests Also referred to as rapid tests or rapid antigen tests, these tests work by quickly identifying protein fragments from a virus and providing test results in about 15 minutes. Despite being fast, antigen tests can be less accurate than other testing options because they are less sensitive. Because no special equipment is

needed, antigen tests may be performed in various community settings or at home. This convenience has made antigen tests, particularly at-home options, popular when quick results are needed, as when returning to an office or preparing for an event like a vacation. However, there is more room for error when self-testing, as opposed to having a test administered by a trained professional. When to take it: When in need of results quickly Speed: Results usually available in 15 minutes Chance of user error: High Ease of use: Doesn’t require equipment or chemicals; easy to use at home or point of care Effectiveness on variants: Low PCR tests PCR tests are also referred to as molecular tests, viral RNA tests or nucleic acid tests. These require special equipment and are typically sent to a lab, with results often available within 24 hours, depending on location. Some PCR tests provide results in just 20 minutes, however, these tests are mostly available in healthcare environments, such as hospitals. Why would someone use a test that takes longer to get results? The answer: accuracy. PCR tests have remained a touchstone in diagnostics due to their heightened accuracy over antigen tests. They are highly sensitive and can detect very small amounts of virus genetic material in a sample, such as viral DNA. These tests have a sensitivity of about 98%, much higher than comparative data for antigen tests. This is why PCR tests can detect active infections nearly every time, and it is rare for someone uninfected to receive a positive test.

Money Matters Sadly, identity theft happens throughout the year – but some identity thieves are particularly active during tax-filing season. How can you protect yourself?

One of the most important moves you can make is to be suspicious of requests by people or entities claiming to be from the IRS. You may receive phone calls, texts and emails, but these types of communication are often just “phishing” scams with one goal in mind: to capture your personal information. These phishers send emails that appear to contain the IRS logo or making calls that may even seem to be coming from the IRS. Don’t open any links or attachments to the emails and don’t answer the calls – and don’t be alarmed if the caller leaves a vaguely threatening voicemail, either asking for personal information, such as your Social Security number, or informing you of some debts you supposedly owe to the IRS that must be taken care of “immediately.” In reality, the IRS will not initiate contact with you by phone, email, text message or social media to request personal or financial information, or to

829-1040.

inquire about issues pertaining to your tax returns. Instead, the agency will first send you a letter. And if you’re unsure of the legitimacy of such a letter, contact the IRS directly at 800-

Of course, not all scam artists are fake IRS representatives – some will pass themselves off as tax preparers. Fortunately, most tax preparers are honest, but it’s not too hard to find the dishonest ones who might ask you to sign a blank return, promise you a big refund before looking at your records or try to charge a fee based on the percentage of your return. Legitimate tax preparers will make no grand promises and will explain their fees upfront. Before hiring someone to do your taxes, find out their qualifications. Shop Local

There are millions of small businesses in the United States owned by passionate people working hard to make their dreams a reality. Rather than buying from a big retailer the next time you need something, consider supporting the locally owned businesses around you. When you support a small business, you’re not only helping build your community, but also directly impacting someone’s life. Every customer counts when it comes to small business, which means your dollars can help that small business owner thrive. This is the perfect time to support your local businesses. Here are three simple ways to support small businesses and have a positive impact this holiday season and beyond: Get to know your community through its businesses While holidays are important times to shop local, your support matters all year long. For many people, this means shifting their mindset to thinking about local options first and getting to know the types of products and services your

local businesses are providing. Whether you are purchasing items for yourself or someone else, start to understand how these local businesses can fill your needs. Don’t forget, many small businesses offer gift cards, which are wonderful ways to show ongoing support. Support small business service providers Small businesses aren’t just for tangible goods. Many provide important services, such as your local mechanic, dentist or insurance agent. So, no matter your needs, try and find businesses that are active in the community. Share your experience Many small businesses rely on satisfied customers to tell others so they can grow their client base. In fact, more than eight out of 10 people around the world said they completely or somewhat trust the recommendations of friends and family, according to Nielsen. So, tell a friend in person, share a post on social media, or leave a positive review online. The next time you have a need arise, think of how a small business can help. Every effort counts to build your community, show your support, and ensure you continue to have thriving small businesses near you.

Eczema Tips

On top of the physical, chronic symptoms including intense and persistent itching, patches and skin dryness - eczema can affect everything from a child’s concentration in school to their ability to do everyday activities. A new eBook, My ECZ-ellent Day at Camp, is raising awareness and understanding about the experiences of children with eczema and how, together, we can help them better navigate the challenges. The book tells the story of Taylor, a child living with eczema, who learns to overcome difficulties and have a fun day at camp. Written for parents and caregivers, the book aims to share important tips for helping young children with eczema - as a caregiver and as a peer or friend. Here are three crucial things to know: 1. Learn as much as you can about the disease Eczema is complex and can affect children both physically and emotionally. That’s why it’s critical for caregivers to understand how it works,

what the symptoms are and how to manage it. In addition to sharing Taylor’s summertime adventures, My ECZ-ellent Day at Camp includes a helpful field guide to give caregivers a basic understanding of the disease and its potential unseen impacts, like isolation and anxiety. These challenges can be difficult to navigate for children and caregivers alike. That’s why www.UnderstandAD.com has even more tools and resources available to help the eczema community. 2. Find different ways to have fun Children with eczema are often forced to avoid activities that can trigger their symptoms, like swimming. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other options for them. It’s important for caregivers to help their kids focus on things they can do, as opposed to things they cannot do. 3. Talk openly about eczema Many children don’t know what eczema is or even how to say it. But talking about it can help spread awareness. “My daughter Hadley is often asked questions about eczema that embarrass her,” says Ashley Ellis, whose daughter has severe eczema. “But many people just don’t understand what it can be like to live with eczema every day. That’s why stories like My ECZ-ellent Day at Camp are so meaningful.” The eBook is one of many free resources available to caregivers at UnderstandAD.com. “NEA wants children living with eczema and their families to know that they are not alone, they have a whole big community to help support them and to help them find support in their journey,” said Julie Block, President and CEO, National Eczema Association. Visit www.UnderstandAD.com to read My ECZellent Day at Camp and discover more helpful eczema resources and videos.
