Welcome to your October edition! October seems to be everyone’s favorite month in Marley Park. Over the years, I’ve heard countless people say they’ve never seen another neighborhood do Halloween the way Marley Park does Halloween. Fall is in the air, neighbors have started fall decorating, and front porches throughout the neighborhood are being adorned with pumpkins, fall wreathes, and scarecrow décor.

If this is your first fall in Marley Park, you’re going to love it! The neighborhood events are a blast, and Halloween night is an incredible scene of kids and families getting out and about in their costumes to enjoy the festivities, and of course, collect treats from neighbors. Halloween truly embodies the spirit of “The Front Porch” in so many ways. If you’re planning to pass out treats this year, please consider adding a teal pumpkin to your front porch to indicate that you also have non-food and allergy-friendly treats available. This simple act promotes inclusion for trick-or-treaters with food allergies or other conditions. You can visit FoodAllergy.org to add your address to the Teal Pumpkin Project Map. May you and yours enjoy everything Marley Park has to offer this fall season. After all, “The farther we’ve gotten from the magic and mystery of our past, the more we’ve come to need Halloween.” ~Paula Guran As always, see you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover

National Walk to School Day is officially on October 6, and participation is encouraged throughout October. The timing is perfect for Arizona since the weather is finally starting to cool off here, especially in the mornings.

Walking or biking to school has many benefits, including enabling children to incorporate regular physical activity into their day. It also reduces traffic congestion, which improves conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists, creating a positive cycle—as the community sees more people walking and biking, more people feel comfortable walking and bicycling. The common goal of improving conditions for walking and bicycling builds a sense of community as children and parents develop walking and bicycling buddies and chat with neighbors on the sidewalk. Communities with higher rates of walking and bicycling tend to have lower crash rates for all travel modes. Enabling students of all abilities to walk and bicycle to school makes it easier for everyone in the community to get around, including parents with strollers, senior citizens, residents without cars, and residents with temporary or permanent · Open every night from 5 pm to 1 am mobility · Every child seen by a pediatrician impairments. · Faster than the emergency room Sidewalks, · Online registration to get into queue or register for telehealth visit paths, and other · Telehealth visits from anywhere in AZ investments · AHCCCS and most major insurance in pedestrian accepted, cash pay rates available · Easy access off 101 and I-10 and bicycle · Rapid COVID testing available infrastructure can increase home 623-643-9233 values and direct GoodNightPeds.com additional traffic to local businesses. 10320 W McDowell Rd Bldg. Brooklyn Barton is a third grader this year at Marley Park Elementary School, and she walks to school from her home in Marley Park every day. Brooklyn has been attending Marley Park since kindergarten. Walking to school makes her feel independent and gives her confidence. The Barton family has lived in the West Valley for twenty years and has been in Marley Park for two years this month. Having lived in Rancho Gabriela previously, the Bartons spent many evenings strolling our neighborhood parks with their younger kids in the stroller. When they decided to move, they knew they wanted to officially become part of the Marley Park community. The close proximity to Marley Park Elementary School is one of the main reasons they chose their current home. To formally participate in National Walk to School Day, you can register your family, neighborhood, or school at WalkBiketoSchool.org and share your event plans and photos on social media using the hashtag #WalktoSchoolDay. Home Sweet Home One of the questions I’m asked most often is whether it’s a good time to buy a home. The answer depends on your current circumstances and homeownership. If you own your current home, but are looking to upgrade, downsize, or relocate, I typically recommend selling and buying now. Home values have appreciated significantly in the past year, making it a great time to sell. At the same time, low interest rates mean you can afford to purchase a more expensive home, especially if you’re reinvesting the equity from the sale of your current home. If the market softens, it will be at least partly because interest rates have increased which means that even if it’s still a good time to sell, you may not be able to afford the house you want because your monthly payment will be higher. If you don’t currently own a home, then it becomes a bit less straightforward. Prices could fall and that would seem like a better time to buy, but a softer market and falling prices will likely mean interest rate increases. That means you still might not be able to afford to buy the

house you want. All the crystal balls and market experts in the world can’t really predict what will happen with the market, overall economy, and interest rates, so if you can afford what you want at today’s low rates, buy now. If you can’t afford to buy now, then you could take a wait-and-see approach and hope housing will be more affordable soon. Unless you can pay cash for a home, however, it’s important to keep in mind that “affordable” is just as much about the monthly payment as the actual price of the home; and payment amounts are dependent on interest rates. A home purchased for $450,000 at today’s interest rates is going to be much more “affordable” than a home purchased for the same $450,000 at higher interest rates in the future. If you are thinking about selling, buying, or both, in the current market, reach out to your local real estate specialist for a free consultation. A good agent will help you determine when the time is right to make your move. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | REALTOR® | Real Broker

Bunco Club

Marley Park resident Annette Nomicos-Peterson has recently started a women’s bunco group and all women in Marley Park are invited to attend. Bunco is a dice game generally played with twelve or more players, divided into groups of four, trying to score points while taking turns rolling three dice in a series of six rounds. A bunco is achieved when a person rolls three-ofa-kind, and all three numbers match the round number. Bunco originated in 19th-century England, where it was known as “eight dice cloth”. It was imported to San Francisco as a gambling activity in 1855, where it gave its name to gambling parlors, or “bunco parlors”, and more generally to any swindle. After the Civil War, the game evolved into a popular parlor game. During the 1920s and Prohibition, bunco was re-popularized as a gambling game, often associated with speakeasies. According to the World Bunco Association, the game saw a resurgence in popularity in the

8 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

United States in the early 21st century; in 2006, it was claimed that during the previous year “over 59 million women have played bunco and over 27 million play regularly”. The Marley Park bunco group meets at 6:00 p.m. on the second Friday of every month at the Marley Park Heritage Club. The buy-in is $5.00 and attendees should bring a small appetizer to share. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the game, you’re welcome to come play, laugh, snack, and meet neighbors. You’re not guaranteed to win, but you’re guaranteed to have fun! Community Cares

Our family loves Halloween in Marley Park. There are amazing decorations to see, the excited energy that crowds of kids trick-or-treating create, and the fun of handing out candy too. I would argue that is more fun than the actual trick-or-treating, but don’t tell my kids! Trick-or-treating brings candy, and with candy comes…candy wrappers. The day after Halloween always finds our neighborhood littered with candy wrappers and other trash that demonstrate how much the neighborhood children enjoy their “Halloween Haul” every year. This year let’s work together to keep our community beautiful!

This year, the day after Halloween is a Monday, which for many means a walk to school. We typically walk the ½ mile to Marley Park Elementary, and it is an easy opportunity to help clean up the mess of the night before. We grab a trash bag on our way out the door and pick up anything we see on our route. Don’t forget to bring the hand sanitizer! We look forward to seeing our neighbors on another incredible Halloween night in Marley Park! Submitted by Tracy McCall | Marley Park Resident

Before Halloween, consider talking to your kids about the importance of keeping track of their trash, and not littering. Our family’s strategy is to put any trash we create in our trick-or-treat bag and sort it our later. Another option would be for parents to carry a separate bag for your trash as well as any trash seen on the ground along the way.

Pet of the Month Spikey is a year old bearded dragon who owns Marley Park resident, Cash Malera. Cash bought him with his birthday money last year. When Spikey isn’t outside on his leash with Cash, he can often be found staring out the window like he is in the photo. He also loves cuddling under your hair and falling asleep, chasing flies, and roaming around the house. It’s not uncommon for him to end up under the couch which then must be moved so he can be rescued. Meal worms are his favorite and he HATES kale. Submitted by Nicole Melara Marley Park Resident

The Neighborhood Stork

Whether you’re new to Marley Park or have been here for years, you’ve probably seen the adorable wooden stork leaning against a tree in front of a neighbor’s house at some point. The storks are placed there by the Marley Park Community Cares Club to celebrate and welcome new babies to the neighborhood.

The Marley Park Community Cares Club was started by a former resident, and I became chairperson shortly after we moved to the neighborhood in 2013. The main function of the club is to deliver meals to families welcoming new babies, but we also bring meals to neighbors who have had surgeries or health challenges as well as residents who have experienced a death in the family. We place the signature Marley Park wooden stork outside the homes of those welcoming new additions; they make the house easier to find when neighbors are bringing meals. Our current volunteer “Stork Guy,” Olav de Vlieger, and I are the only two official members of the group, but it is the combined efforts of our amazing Marley Park

neighbors who volunteer to bring meals that has kept the group going all these years. On average, we collectively deliver nearly 100 meals per year to neighbors in times of need! If you are interested in participating in the Community Cares Club, please join The Front Porch group on Facebook or email me at Christie@AZLifestyleTeam.com. If you know of a neighbor in need, or if you yourself are in need, please reach out via Facebook private message, email at Christie@AZLifestyleTeam.com, or call/ text 602-740-2313. The Marley Park Community Cares Club has always been and will always be dependent on kind and caring neighbors like YOU to participate. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Homeowner

Give Blood

From surgeries to emergencies, life-saving therapeutics, and beyond, blood and plasma are essential for hospitals and health care centers to help patients. Unfortunately, experts report facilities throughout the country are facing critical shortages and are calling on more people - especially younger generations - to help by donating blood or plasma locally. There are many reasons why blood and plasma inventories have fallen so low. Thousands of blood drives were canceled due to COVID-19. Additionally, U.S. hospitals have seen an increase in trauma cases requiring transfusions. Compared with 2019, the demand for blood at trauma centers has increased 10%, escalating the urgent need for blood donations. Beyond current events, blood supplies in general are decreasing because the typical donor is aging and fewer young people are donating. Older generations like the baby boomers, adults 57 and older, are aging out of the donor pool and first-time donors aren’t replacing them at

adequate rates. A plentiful blood and plasma supply is important not only for accidents and injuries, but for a host of medical procedures. “Blood and plasma aren’t just used in emergencies. They are used to treat anything from injuries from a car accident to chronic illnesses like cancer to burn injuries. To ensure help is there when people need it, we have to have a stable supply of blood and plasma and the need has never been greater. We urgently need donors of all ages - and we need it now,” said Dr. Alexander Carterson, head of medical, scientific and clinical affairs for Abbott’s diagnostics business. Whether it’s a one-time need, or for ongoing lifesaving procedures, blood and plasma donations help make a difference for millions of Americans every year. “One donation can save up to three lives and that’s truly amazing. We are committed to raising awareness about the need for blood donors so that people can live their best lives,” Carterson added. Join the BE THE 1 movement and donate to be a part of the solution. Chicken Sheet Pan Dinner with Grapes, Carrots and Parsnips Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 1/4 teaspoons turmeric 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 2 large garlic cloves, minced 4 chicken thighs on the bone, skin removed and visible fat trimmed 2 medium onions, sliced 1/3-inch thick 3 carrots, peeled and cut in 2 and 1/2-inch sticks 2 medium parsnips, peeled and cut in 2 and 1/2inch sticks Freshly ground pepper 1 1/4 cups red California grapes Directions Heat the oven to 400 F with rack in the center. Line a shallow baking sheet (10x15 or 11x17) with parchment paper or foil (shiny side down). If using foil, spray with vegetable oil cooking spray to prevent vegetables from sticking. In a large bowl, stir to combine the oil, cumin,

turmeric, salt and garlic. Add the chicken, turning to coat, and then transfer smooth side up to the baking sheet. Add the vegetables to the bowl and toss in the remaining spiced oil, then distribute them around the chicken pieces on the baking sheet. Season with freshly ground pepper. Roast the chicken and vegetables for 25 minutes. Sprinkle the grapes over the vegetables and roast about 5 minutes more, until the juices run clear when the chicken is pierced with the tip of a small sharp knife. (Note: for softer roasted grapes, add them to the pan earlier.)
