Baked Plums on Toast Approx 600-650g plums, 75g unsalted butter, 40ml brandy 8 slices of ciabatta cut at an angle, 2 vanilla pods 200g caster sugar, 1 thick skinned lemon, 150ml mascarpone Ingredients Serve Four People.

Method

Ingredients

Prep 35 min › Cook 25 min › Ready in 1 hr

Preheat oven to 200˚C Slice the vanilla pods in half lengthways and scrape out the seeds with a teaspoon then combine with the sugar in a bowl.

Slice the plums in half and remove the stones then place in a largish bowl.

Add the vanilla sugar and the brandy. Toss together and leave to marinate for 30 minutes to an hour.

Spoon the mascarpone into a bowl & grate the zest of 1/4 lemon, & stir.

Butter the ciabatta then lay each slice buttered side up in an oven proof dish lightly dotted/greased with the remaining butter large enough so they don't overlap. Spoon the fruit onto the ciabatta and drizzle over some of the liquor. Bake in the oven for 20 - 25 minutes, then remove and place a spoonful of the mascarpone cream over the top of each slice.

Return to the oven for a couple of minutes until the mascarpone starts to just melt and collapse. Serve hot.

Volunteers needed to help train assistance dogs for Canine Partners

Volunteers are being sought by national charity Canine Partners to take puppies into their own homes and begin their early training to be assistance dogs for people with disabilities.

Canine Partners is specifically looking for volunteers, known as puppy parents, in South Essex, who can take a pup into their home from the age of seven weeks until they are 12-14 months old.

Essex Puppy Satellite Trainer Emily Lawrence said: “Puppy parents teach the assistance-dogs-in-training basic obedience, social skills and core tasks that are essential before they move on to advanced training, where their skills are refined specifically for a disabled person’s needs.

“Volunteering as a puppy parent is a rewarding opportunity for people who live in and around the area. Puppy parents train puppies in the early stages of their development before they go on to advanced training and are matched with someone who has a disability.

“Although previous experience with dogs is not required, a puppy parent will need to be home most of the day, have a secure dog-friendly garden and have the stamina to manage an active young puppy.”

Canine Partners will provide food and equipment for the puppy and cover all veterinary costs for the duration of the puppy parent relationship.

LAWN CARE IN SEPTEMBER When you should sow grass seed.

You can sow Lawn UK lawn seed mixtures at any time from late March to mid-October providing that in periods of unusually dry weather the seedbed is kept constantly moist until the grass is about 6cm (2.5 inches) high.

Always water with a fine spray; to great a force of water will displace the seeds. It is also worth noting, that there needs to be adequate warmth in the soil, 6-8 degrees Celsius is required for germination, and this is usually when the air temperature is above 10 degrees Celsius.

If during periods of drought, and there is no hosepipe ban, you may decide to water the area. You must ensure the ground is thoroughly soaked and watering must be done on a regular basis until the grass has become established. Occasional light watering won’t be beneficial, this will do more harm than good.

When is the best time to sow the seed?

This depends on you. If you want to sow in the Spring, you can sow any time from late March onwards. However, if you are patient, there is much to recommend waiting until September before you sow. Firstly, any weed seeds lying on or near the surface of the seedbed will be given a chance to germinate and can be removed. Secondly, English summers may produce hot, dry spells and if your new lawn is sown in the spring, constant watering may well be necessary to get growth started and to avoid the tender young seedlings from being scorched and killed off.

There are many points in favour of a September sowing. The ground is warm after the summer, there tends to be more moisture about, the seed will get off to a good start before the winter and weeds will be minimal.

Then, during the late autumn, a good root system will develop, as opposed to top growth, and your lawn will be in first class order the next spring and summer, ready to withstand hot, dry spells.

nowadays, that it can be a social activity and that it can be educational or harmless entertainment but it’s the proportion of time that we spend slouched on the sofa in front of the box and the habit of snacking whilst watching TV that concerns me. Recent research published in the British Medical Journal suggested that TV viewing habits have a large part to play in childhood obesity levels as it uses up time that could be spent doing something more active and encourages snacking.

Psychologist Dr Aric Sigman’s research goes further. Dr Sigman has identified 15 negative effects that, he says, television can have on youngsters, ranging from shortsightedness, over eating, disturbed sleep patterns and type 2 diabetes to premature puberty and autism. His report, based on analysing 35 scientific studies, indicates that staring at a bright screen for hours in the evening hinders the production of melatonin – a hormone important in kick-starting puberty. In animal studies, artificially low melatonin levels are linked to early puberty.

TV NIGHTMARES Stuart BSc(Hons) MSc(Chiro) DC Consultant Osteomyologist - www.spinalcarecentre.co.uk No, I’ve not decided to review the latest reality TV offering: I’m referring to the 16+ hours each week (at conservative estimates) that our children spend slumped, glassy-eyed staring at a flickering screen. The average 6 year old will have spent one whole year of his life watching television.

And adults are worse: at the end of the average lifetime we will have spent the equivalent of 24 hours a day for 12 years doing nothing but watching TV. Imagine that you are at the end of your life and someone says they can give you twelve years back of your earlier life – would you choose the moments that you enjoyed talking with friends and loved ones, weddings, births, celebrations, moments when you gave back to the community and felt good...or would you choose to watch mainly mediocre-tobad television programmes in those precious extra years?

Now I know that TV is part of the fabric of our lives

A study carried out on the Panorama programme asked volunteers to monitor their children’s viewing habits and their corresponding behaviour for a week. The families’ televisions, games consoles and computers were then taken away for one week and parents again monitored their children’s behaviour.

During the no TV week, the families spoke to each other more, played games together, siblings reported getting on with each other better, the whole family slept better and parents said that it was easier to get children to do their homework.

As TV is here to stay, what’s the answer? Just as you would monitor family’s diets for salt and sugar intake, then it’s possible to monitor your family’s ‘TV intake’. Dr Sigman recommends no TV for the under threes and a scale of hours per day for older children. I believe that quality as well as quantity of viewing is important.

Rather than turning on the TV out of habit, it can be valuable to plan your own and your children’s programme viewing and to watch the programmes together and use them as point of discussion. If your child knows that they are limited to, say, one hour of TV on a school night, that they are going to be more discerning in their viewing choices as well as having more time for active play, reading, family time and homework. It’s not for me to suggest activities to do as that wouldn’t give you opportunity to use your imagination but there is endless inspiration from books, local voluntary organisations, libraries and leisure centres.

ready to commit to a long-term challenge, working out on the same days each week will help to make fitness seem like a given, rather than an option.

3. Break it down When you’re feeling particularly drained, knowing there’s still half an hour left in your workout can make you want to give up. Instead, focus only on the next set of weights, or running the next five minutes and before you know it, you’ll have completed your workout. Keep in mind, however, the difference between wanting to end a workout, and needing to end it. If you’re in pain or your fatigue feels more excessive than it should be, listen to your body and call it quits.

GET BACK TO YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE If your morning run feels impossible and your finding it hard to get back to the gym after your Summer holiday, try these tricks for getting back into your fitness routine.

1. Lay out your clothes the night before If you wake up and see your running shoes, and water bottle all ready to go, you’ll feel like you’re too invested to change your mind.

5. Lower your expectations Just because you’re not feeling up to your usual onehour routine, don’t skip working out altogether. By doing a little exercise, even if it’s just a 20-minute bike ride, you’re keeping your brain programmed to your fitness schedule. On the other hand, if you don’t exercise at all, it won’t seem like a big deal to skip another work out in the future.
