Jolly ‘Green’ The 4x4 may have taken a bit of a bashing in the environmental debate as being gas guzzling, polluting beasts which roam the city limits more than they do the open country, but the guys at Land Rover have been doing their bit to be greener for quite some time. Their pioneering CO2 Offset Programme means they’re looking to offset over two million tonnes of CO2 by the end of this year and the first 45,000 miles of your Land Rover are actually balanced out and offset by their ‘carbon neutral’ projects around the world. Not bad eh? In years gone by the Land Rover wasn’t known for a plush interior so let’s look at what this new little beauty has to offer. For a start the seats provide excellent support, safety and durability - six-way adjustment is standard for the driver and everyone gets superb leg, head and shoulder room, as well as a clear view thanks to tiered ‘stadium’ seating. A 60/40 split rear seat makes for versatile load space, but even when it’s raised there’s still plenty of room. The outside is unmistakeably Land Rover, but with a twist that’s all its own the Freelander 2 has a fresh, contemporary design. Chiselled lines, smooth surfaces and interlocking shapes reflect its precision, strength and quality.

You’ll find the ride smoother than many premium saloons, let alone other 4x4s. Excellent handling makes for confident, sporty onroad driving. The wheel-out stance and wide track help deliver agility and great grip. The supple suspension system is fully independent and ensures a responsive drive. The model I test drove looked sporty with dynamic 17 inch, ten spoke alloy wheels, cloth-leather seats and a Satin Silver metallic effect finish. Frills include the nine speaker Alpine audio system and convenience features like the front Parking Aid and Bluetooth® Personal Telephone Integration (PTI). This starts from £25,805 on the road, but you can get loads more extras. Land Rover even has a Fragile Earth policy to promote responsible off-road driving and have special centres where you can go to learn how to get the best out of your beast without trashing the environment! Take a look at www.landroverexperience.co.uk if you fancy a frolic in your 4x4. Why not log on to www.marshallpeterboroughlandrover.co.uk or better still go and see Richard and his team and test drive one for yourself - I had a great time! Shirley
