support our independents Cresset Shops and Services You may have been desperate for some retail therapy, beauty treatments or to get some items repaired over recent months. You were definitely desperate for a hair cut! But there’s one thing for sure - our independent businesses across Peterborough have been just as keen for our custom so let’s give our support to the local guys and girls on our doorstep. he Cresset centre in Bretton is so much more than the popular theatre – it’s a unique community hub that’s still going strong over 40 years on and one of the key ingredients is the diverse range of shops and services it’s home to in addition to the theatre.

Did you know the name ‘Cresset’ refers to a basket of fire, kept continuously alight and placed at the focal point of a mediaeval community? In the last few months community has become even more important to us all but The Cresset’s been a focal point of that community spirit for years, and when it comes to ‘shop local’ they nailed that long ago. It’s no surprise that many of its shops have been there for decades and you can make the most of everything from getting your shoes fixed to getting your hair done, buying a new handbag, topping up your tan or having a tattoo! R & R Tanning saw Mark and Jeanette take over around 4 years ago when they revamped the salon and added smart new cubicles and facilities. So if you need some glow to boost your spirits or in place of your trip abroad, just book a slot. Cresset Shoe Repairs have been a staple since 1993 and Maryanne now runs what started out as her dad’s shop offering key cutting, engraving and duvet cleaning alongside the shoe repairs. She’ll bring those tatty, well worn soles and heels back to life so you can get another season out of your fave footwear… and get a spare key cut to avoid a lockout after the lockdown. The Barber Shoppe has been there just as long keeping men’s, women’s and kids’ hair in shape since the nineties. When they reopened again the queue backed up through the centre so they’re obviously the place to head to get your locks looking lovely again. Then there’s Eastern Ink tattoos and piercing where John and the

guys have been creating some amazing works of art at their Cresset location since 2010. Whether you’re brave enough for a full sleeve or just the tiniest tattoo, you will be in safe hands! If you’ve had one you regret though, they also offer laser removal too! OMG Accessories run by Tapas is the place to head for fabulous costume jewellery and an amazing array of great quality handbags as well as watches and sunglasses all at fantastic prices. If you need a gift or a new accessory for your outfit this is an Aladdin’s cave of goodies.

Affordable and friendly there’s no contract required and they offer everything from weights and gym equipment to classes including Zumba, yoga, circuits and lots more. The Cresset also house Bees In The Hive Pre-school providing high quality care and learning opportunities for children aged between 2 and 4 years, and Goldhay Arts, a registered charity offering weekly sessions in the performing and visual arts to adults with learning disabilities since 1994.

The newest business on the block is Crafty Jax, an independent business selling personalised gifts, cards, balloons and unique 3D crystals which opened on May 4 this year.

Bretton was the first new township of Greater Peterborough, and The Cresset was designed to sit at the heart of the community, offering services for all local residents and visitors. By all accounts they’ve done a pretty good job!

As well as the independent shops and services it’s also home to the YMCA gym, another community facility that’s accessible to all.
