La Concha, 1927. Pauline Pfeiffer & Hemingway.
THE CONCHA La Concha was one of Hemingway’s favourite beaches. Numerous photos from the 1920s (1926 and 1927) show him in a bathing suit next to this second wife, Paulin Pfeiffer, and his friend, the painter Waldo Peirce. In the novel ‘Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises’, he describes the La Concha beach and bay: “The sand on the beach was smooth and firm, yellow… the sand was warm under bare feet... The two edges of La Concha promenade almost closing the harbour…on the other side of the narrow gap that led into the open sea”.
