Or any of the Basque pelota players from the Havana fronton, including his great friend Patxi Ibarluzea, Patchi. Francisco Ibarlucea, known as “Patxchi,” a Basque pelota player in Havana, was another close friend and a crew member of Hemingway’s “Crook Factory.” He was a Jai Alai player both in Havana and in Mexico. The figure of Hemingway just carries on getting bigger in terms of public popularity. We recently saw ‘Hemingway & Gelhorn’ on the big screen, with a spectacular cast and no less spectacular budget. And filming of ‘Across the River and Into the Trees’, part of which is to be shot in Navarre, has been announced. Hemingway is more than a writer; he is a cultural icon. I never cease to be amazed at the level and persistence of world-wide interest in Hemingway’s life and work. He was a gifted artist who also happened to live a life of action and adventure, and I think that combination has widespread appeal.
