SURVEY DATA MANAGEMENT CAPABILITY STATEMENT

COMPANY OVERVIEW

ESO Surveyors provides specialist surveying solutions to the Australian construction industry. We deliver our services with highly qualified and experienced staff using the latest technology available.

Our clients are mainly the Tier 1 and Joint Venture constructors and we have been involved in some of Australia’s most iconic construction projects. We also take great pride in our continuing relationships with smaller builders, designers, landscapers and other trades.

Starting in Sydney over 30 years ago, ESO Surveyors now has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, employing over 140 staff.

Since our beginning, ESO has used 12d Model (or 4d as it was back then!) as our surveying software and we are one of 12d Model’s earliest adopters of the software that has now become an industry staple.

ESO now uses 12d Model software in the office, 12d Field on site and 12d Synergy to manage all our project data.

SURVEY DATA SERVICES

Centralised Site Data Management

Using a combination of 12d Model and 12d Synergy cloud-based software, ESO is able to work seamlessly with field surveyors. On projects where ESO is responsible for data management, our surveyors have realtime access, in the field, to the latest design models as well as the ability to instantly update the central survey setout and as-built data files. This form of data management reduces the risk of errors and increases on-site survey productivity.

General Site Construction Data Management

ESO can provide comprehensive project survey data management including:

• Design modelling and calculations for setout by field surveyors,

• Data extraction from BIM design model,

• As-constructed survey processing and reporting,

• Underground utilities modelling, reporting and clash detection,

• Reporting and clash detection,

• Identifying and resolving potential design conflicts, and

• Incorporation of design amendments from RFIs into the project design model.

Pre-Construction Quantity Reporting

ESO’s clients need reliable information from design models when tendering projects to allow for informed decision making.

Our detailed project quantity reporting from design models provides clients with the essential data needed for accurate cost estimation during the tendering process.

Machine Control Modelling and File Creation

Our team of experienced Data Managers are skilled in the modelling and creation of files for all common makes of GPS and TPS machine control systems. Whether it’s for grading, excavation, or paving, our machine control modelling services provide a solution for construction plant that increases efficiency and reliability.

Asphalt Conformance Reporting

ESO’s off-site pavement conformance reporting service provides timely delivery to our clients of pavement compliance reports whilst allowing the field surveyor to focus on supporting the working paving machines.

Utilising a combination of 12d Model software and in-house developed reporting tools, our reports are presented in a clear and concise format for our clients to have a thorough understanding of pavement as it is constructed.

End of Month Quantity Reporting

Using design data and as-built data, ESO provides its clients with detailed and accurate earthworks Quantity Reports to assist clients with the preparation of monthly claims to the Principal.

Site Survey Control Processing & Least Squares Adjustment

Using industry leading software, ESO meticulously analyses survey control field data to provide an accurate and reliable network adjustment and survey control register to meet the relevant project and state specifications.

RECENT PROJECT

CASE STUDY

OBJECTIVE

ESO was engaged by a large-scale road and bridge project to create a 3D model of structural elements from 2D drawings. This assignment was part of our overall contract to supply equipped surveyors and survey leaders for the project. The features to be modelled were the structural elements of a complex bridge and the adjacent noise walls and parapets. The task was performed by one of our experienced off-site Survey Data Managers in consultation with another of our senior Data Managers.

WHAT WAS DISCOVERED?

Our Data Manager discovered that the separate noise wall, parapet and bridge design packages did not fit together. Critical gaps existed between design packages where panels were missing. Clashes between design packages also existed where some structural elements were erroneously sitting on top of others.

WHAT WAS THE RESULT?

If construction had proceeded there would have been, firstly, substantial re-work required by the different trade packages involved. Secondly, there would have been disagreement amongst the trades, the Main Contractor and the Designers as to who was at fault. Thirdly, critical delays to the construction programme would have occurred.

The ESO Survey Data Team was able to identify the deficiencies in the design and work collaboratively with the Designers and the Main Contractor to rectify the design before construction started.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL CONCLUSION?

It is not unusual on large construction projects that the design responsibility is shared amongst different designers. This creates challenges in co-ordinating the different design packages to ensure seamless construction integration. It usually falls to the experienced Site Survey Manager to ensure this occurs. However, managing survey resources and programme does not always permit the uninterrupted time required to check the integrating design packages and liaise effectively with all interested parties.

ESO’s off-site Survey Data Team is available, on-call, to devote the time and the skill required to ensure potential problems, such as those described above, do not occur.

Project peace of mind and reduced project costs.

THE TEAM

ESO has a team of six 12d Data Managers located around Australia servicing both external and internal clients. They perform most of their work off-site.

All 12d Data Managers are ex-Site Survey Managers. All have significant experience in working with construction design models, managing survey data, preparing data for survey and reporting upstream.

Jake Hatton | Survey Systems Manager

The 12d Data team is lead by Jake Hatton who is part of the ESO Leadership Team and has been with ESO Surveyors since 2017. Jake has a Bachelor of Surveying from Curtin University, and his site experience includes various FIFO earthworks and roadworks projects in WA; EJ Whitten Bridge widening, Westgate Freeway and Citylink Tullamarine widening in Melbourne.

HUNTER STCLAIR | Data Manager

Holding a Bachelor of Special Science (Honours) from the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), Hunter has 13 years of experience in diverse civil and structural projects. Hunter’s strengths are in 3D design, modelling, and utilising advanced survey tools to achieve project goals.

JONATHAN TUDBERRY | Data Manager

Jon holds a Bachelor of Surveying and has been a construction surveyor for over 20 years working on projects primarily in NSW. These projects have been a mix of major rail infrastructure, highway systems, bridge/structure works, and local roadworks jobs.

MICHELLE GROSE | Data Manager

Michelle has been involved in the construction surveying industry since she obtained her Bachelor of Surveying in 1992 in SA, where she began her career in mining, transitioning into tunnel works. Michelle has managed surveys on many large road, bridge and infrastructure projects throughout Australia, working with different state authorities. Her experience over the past decade has primarily involved the management and coordination between surveying, design and engineering.
