The entire city comes to life with promise of a jam-packed season full of festivals, events, endless outdoor activities, a bustling downtown, and busy parks and trails.

With everyone eager to get outside and experience all that summer has to offer, our Parks, Recreation and Culture Department has prepared this Summer Made FUN guide to help you and your family get the most out of summer in Orillia.

June is Recreation and Parks Month and we encourage all residents to become more active and engaged in the recreation opportunities

available in Orillia. Kick-off your beach season with our lifeguards at Couchiching Beach Park during Water Smart Day on June 20th. We are particularly interested in meeting Grade 7 and 8 students interested in becoming lifeguards as part of our lifeguard recruitment program for the new recreation facility set to open in 2018.

Together, Orillia Council and staff are committed to helping improve your quality of life by providing exceptional recreation and cultural opportunities for all ages. I would encourage you to discover the exciting programs, events, services, trails and amenities highlighted in this guide. INCLUSION INFORMATION Everyone Can Register for Camps and Programs!

Medical Needs / Therapy

Participants with special needs are encouraged and welcome to participate in any of our programs. In order for the participant to experience success, it is important to consider the participant’s ability, age, need, and the type of activities that take place within the program.

Every effort will be made to ensure programs are open to all members of our community whenever it is safe and enjoyable to do so. In order to do this, we work closely with local agencies to co-ordinate resources to help make programs accessible. Communication and co-operation between all parties will ensure a safe and fun environment for all participants and will help to remove any real or artificial barriers to participation.

City of Orillia staff do not provide any ongoing medical interventions, supports or therapies (i.e. injections, G-tube feedings, etc.). Strategies and accommodations as applicable and appropriate to the program environment will be supported. Personal care is provided at a 1:1 support level only (transfers only – no lifts).

Ask The Questions: • Is support required at school?

• Does a physical, developmental and/or learning disability exist that affects the safety of the participant or that of other program registrants ?

• Is the participant currently associated with a support agency ?

• Is extra support needed at home for basic care such as dressing and toileting ?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you may need support. Please contact the Parks, Recreation and Culture office to speak with staff.

Accessible Inclusive Recreation - A.I.R. All recreation programs offered by the City of Orillia provide a fully inclusive environment. The City of Orillia welcomes participants of all abilities to enroll in any of the various programs. Inclusive facilitators may be available for participants who need assistance; however, spaces are limited so please book early. Once registered, you will receive a phone call requesting additional information that may aid in creating a safe and fun recreational environment for your child as well as a 1:1 worker.

Child Information Packages To assist in better planning, a Child Information Package must be attached to all inclusion registrations. Forms are available at the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department (Orillia City Centre), or online at orillia.ca. If you have any questions, please contact Christine Mitchell at cmitchell@orillia.ca or at 705-329-7251.

1:1 Inclusion Facilitators 1:1 inclusion facilitators are available for children who need supervision for personal care, social guidance, safety and behavioural concerns.

The cost of 1:1 Inclusion Facilitator is $360.00 per week for camps and $75.00 for an eight-class program. Camp and program registration fees are additional. This only covers the cost of an inclusion staff.

Please note that there are a limited number of spots available.

Accessibility Advisory Committee The City’s Accessibility Advisory Committee is dedicated to solving accessibility challenges. If you have questions or concerns about accessibility, please contact Committee Secretary, Julia Montgomery, at 705-325-1311. The City’s Accessibility Plan is available at orillia.ca and at Orillia City Centre.

Funding Resources Canadian Tire Jumpstart: Gets kids in the game by covering the costs of equipment, registration and/ or transportation. They also lend support to unique initiatives aimed at increasing access to sport and recreation programs. Visit jumpstart.canadiantire. ca for details.

President’s Choice Children’s Charity: This charity is dedicated to helping children who are physically or developmentally challenged. They provide direct financial assistance in the purchase of expensive mobility equipment, environmental modifications, and physical therapy etc. Visit presidentschoice.ca/ ChildrensCharity for details.

Heath Star: At the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, they believe every child should have the chance to participate. Through the County of Simcoe’s Social Assistance Restructuring Reinvestment, this program receives 100% municipal funding to deliver sport and recreation opportunities for lowincome families. YouthReach: This is a new and evolving not-forprofit organization in Barrie and Simcoe County supporting youth and families who might not otherwise participate in recreational activities.

YouthReach administrates funding to assist financially challenged families and youth trying to access recreational and social programs. They engage committed volunteers, community organizations, municipalities and young people to promote opportunity to our youth. Please note that currently this resource is only available for program registration and not camps.

FACILITIES IN OUR COMMUNITY From recreation and cultural facilities, scenic parks and historical landscapes, to athletic fields and meeting rooms, the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department offers many rental opportunities for small group private functions such as weddings parties, small to large festivals and events. Located at J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park, this facility is home to the Orillia Curling Club and six sheets of ice in the winter. In the summer, the centre is mainly used for summer day camps but it is also available for trade shows and special events. The auditorium is available for rental with bar, food and banquet options available. The popular Bayside Restaurant is open to the public year round.

The Rock Wall Climbing is social, active and fun. This makes it the perfect activity for cross training, team building, social events and burning lots and lots of energy.

Prices vary depending on group size and climbing time. Participants must be at least five years of age, fit into the harness securely and be wearing closed-toed shoes. We also request that people tie-back long hair and remove hooded sweatshirts.

INSIDE REGAN HOUSE

This 33 by 23 foot historic home, built of squared-pine timbers, was originally located on Westmount Drive where Shopper’s Drug Mart is now located. The structure, which is Orillia’s oldest pioneer home, was dismantled and later rebuilt by volunteers at Scout Valley next to the heritage stone wall. Regan House is considered a mid-sized meeting room and can hold up to 50 people. For local non-profit groups, meeting rooms are available free of charge for a limited number hours per week.

Get active with the annual June Scavenger Hunt on your own or with friends, with a chance to win some awesome prizes! Venture all over the City of Orillia in search of hidden treasures, using tricky clues from the Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture Facebook and Twitter pages to aid you on your journey.

Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture and local partners will join forces for a carnival themed Water Smart Day. Unsure if your preschooler is ready to go it alone? Preschool prep offers the same content as Preschool 1 but allows the parents to participate for as many classes as your preschooler needs to feel comfortable on their own. Parent participation is required.

This is a shallow water class. Participants will jump into chest deep water, front and back float (3-5 sec), surface support (10 sec) , recover an object in shallow water, submerge and hold their breath (5 sec), kick with an aid on their front, back (5m), vertical whip kick (5 sec) and complete front and back crawl (10m).

Swimmers will complete the Canadian Swim to Survive® Standard.

They’ll work on 10–15m of front crawl, back crawl and whip kick and flutter kick interval training up to 4 x 25m.

These intermediate swimmers will swim 5m underwater and lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing.

They’ll cap it all off with front crawl sprints over 25m and 4 x 25m front or back crawl interval training.

Swimmers will refine their front and back crawl over 50m swims of each, and breaststroke over 15–25m. Then they’ll pick up the pace in 25m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50m front or back crawl; and 4 x 10–15m breaststroke.

These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They’ll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25m. They’ll easily swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke, and they will complete a 300m workout.

Advanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by themselves. They will do side roll entries and open their eyes underwater. They will master a short (3–5 m) swim on their front and gliding and kicking on their side.

Preschool 5

3Y-5Y

These youngsters get more adventuresome with a forward roll entry wearing a PFD and holding their breath underwater for up to 10 sec.

They will work on longer front and back crawl swims, interval training and get a giggle out of whip kick.

Lifesaving Sport has grown over the past several years and is now recognized as a competitive sport by the International Olympic Committee. It is recommended that participants have their Swimmer 4 or equivalent to join this program.

Safe water rescue through victim simulation and minor first aid treatment is covered. WELCOME TO CAMP Things You Need To Know The City of Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is proud to offer dynamic summer day camps. We strive to help you in your quest to find the perfect activities to keep your child busy in a fun, safe, educational and exciting environment.

Program Conduct and Goals We aim to provide enjoyable activities in a safe and positive environment. We expect all campers to be courteous and respectful to all participants and staff, use non-offensive language at all times, support and appreciate each other, solve problems in a fair and peaceful manner, include others in their activities, and play without bullying or teasing others.

Lunches should be Nut-Free!

Pack a litterless lunch, snacks and drinks daily. We suggest a reusable water bottle (no glass please) so children can fuel up and have the energy to go, go, go! Due to the number of nut related allergies, peanut butter, nuts and any food that contains nut by-products will not be allowed at camp. Please pack your lunches with care. Please note that if you are attending Kiddie Camp, the complimentary pizza on the Friday applies only to campers who are signed up for the full day.

Kiddie Camp Age Change Please note due to the newly revised Childcare Early Years Act, your child must be a minimum of four years of age by the first day of camp to attend Kiddie Camps.

Electronic devices are not permitted at camp. Parks, Recreation and Culture is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please do not send valuables to camp. Please pack lunch/snacks to keep your camper fueled up all day long.

Medical Information & Medications at Camp Please ensure the medical section of the Camper Information Form is fully completed and that everything is up to date with current doctor’s name and an emergency contact that can be reached during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Campers requiring medication at camp need to have a Medication Release Form signed. Medication must be stored in original containers only and camp staff will keep them in a secure location. Medication Release Forms will be available during sign in.

Photo Release When agreeing to/signing the registration waiver, you are giving permission for photographs of participants may be taken at any time for promotional purposes. If you do not wish to have your child’s photo/name used, please call 705-329-7251.

Location, Location, Location Please note that locations are subject to change. Staff may walk the children to other locations in the city, including the beach or park.

Drop off/pick up locations may also change, however parents will be notified of any location changes. In the case of location change due to inclement weather, campers may be bused to a safe place.

Quality Supervision Regular camp ratio is 1:10 | Kiddie Camp ratio is 1:8 Our camp ratios are also supplemented with support from responsible, trained leadership volunteers.

There is a Camp Open House on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at Barnfeild Point Recreation Centre from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Extreme Heat Days Not all camp locations have access to air conditioning. Staff will ensure children are in shaded areas, have access to water and will focus on low intensity games and activities on extreme heat days. On these days be sure to pack extra water.

Monday is Mail Day! On the first day of camp, parents/guardians will be given a weekly newsletter outlining the activities for the week, including special themes, trips or outings. All information will also be available at the camp location’s Welcome Table.

Parent Handbook The Parent Handbook will outline program information and expectations. Please review and ensure that your child is aware of what is expected of them, other participants and staff. Copies will be available at Orillia City Centre or online at orillia.ca.

Extended Care If our day camp hours are not long enough for you, try our extended care program! Extended care is per location and provides supervised activities before and after the regular camp hours.

Extended care is available from: 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. for camps located in schools). The fee for this service is $16.00 per week or $8.00 per week for half-day camps.

New this year, we have additional extended care from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. The fee for additional extended care is $32 per week . Please note that a late fee of $5.00/15 minutes will be charged for late pick-ups. See page 37 to register for extended care.

Pizza Day Fridays Watch for the pizza symbol on our camps. This means a complimentary slice will be provided on the Friday of the camp.

Please ensure to still send your child with snacks and drinks that day.

Personal Mediators Orillia welcomes personal support mediators into our program environments. All personal mediators must provide a copy of their current Vulnerable Sector Check, be 16 years of age or older and sign a Mediator agreement.

Medical Needs/Therapy City of Orillia staff do not provide any ongoing medical interventions, supports or therapies. Strategies and accommodations as applicable and appropriate to the camp environment will be supported. Personal care is provided at a 1:1 support level only (transfers only – no lifts).

Accessible Inclusive Recreation - A.I.R. All summer camp programs offered by the City of Orillia provide an inclusive environment. The City of Orillia welcomes participants of all abilities to enroll in the various camp programs provided. Inclusive leaders are available for participants who need assistance; however spaces are limited, and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, so please book early. Child Information Package To assist in better planning and to ensure that your child has success in an inclusive camp environment, parents must complete a Child Information Package. This form must be submitted at the time of registration. Packages must be received by June 1, 2016. Forms are available at the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department office or online at orillia.ca. This camp is for children 4-6 years who are ready to have oodles of fun.

From games, crafts and activities, your child will have the opportunity to make friends, use their imaginations and be entertained all summer long. If you want to register for the full day, please register your child using both the morning and afternoon codes. Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture has teamed up with the Orillia Ball Hockey League to offer your child an amazing opportunity to learn the game of ball hockey this summer! Campers will learn the basics of ball hockey including ball handling, passing, and scoring. The goals of this camp are skill development, fun and fair play! Campers will also participate in various games, sports, arts and crafts, and other camp activities. The end of the week is capped off with a full game.

CITY PARKS The City of Orillia is proud to showcase its inventory of public parkland.

From tranquil waterfront spaces to exciting playgrounds to beautifully manicured lawns, these public spaces are designed to enhance and complement the natural beauty of our community. Parks, Recreation and Culture categorizes Parks into four categories as listed below:

Community Parks

Kitchener Park Kitchener Park, located on Lake Simcoe, is an active centre for sports. Players as well as spectators enjoy soccer, baseball, tennis and horseshoes. Acres of green grass and a playground centre invite children to enjoy the Park as well. Take a walk through the leash-free dog zone located along the water’s edge behind the athletic fields.

West Orillia Sports Complex The West Orillia Sports Complex includes more than just an arena. It is an outstanding community sports complex that serves the needs of participants in ice sports, summer indoor sports, outdoor athletic field sports, tennis as well as recreational walking trails. It is also the home of Orillia’s only artificial turf field. This facility promotes active living along with community values and is accessible to young and old alike.

Community Parks serve the entire community and tend to house large special events including sporting events, festivals etc. These Parks generally include amenities such as athletic fields, accessible playgrounds, washrooms and concessions.

Neighbourhood Parks

Centennial Park, Couchiching Beach Park and Veterans’ Memorial Park Couchiching Beach Park has a summer supervised sandy beach and playground. The waterfront Park is a beehive of activity from mid-May until mid-October including many special events and Sunday Evening Band Concerts. Every summer, thousands of boaters also dock at the Port of Orillia, located in Centennial Park.

Parkettes

J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park on Lake Couchiching is an active Park for baseball, special events and boasts a beach volleyball court as well as a 2.5 Km paved walking loop trail. Within this Park, Moose Beach has a summer supervised swimming area, splash pad and playground apparatus.

Neighbourhood Parks are located within an urban development and tend to meet the needs of the surrounding neighbourhoods. Some amenities include playgrounds, washrooms, splash pads and loop trails.

A Parkette (also known as a mini-park) is a small parcel of green space that may include a small playground area. Parkettes can also provide greenery and a place to sit outdoors.

Naturalized Areas A naturalized area generally consist of naturalized trails and can be considered an “escape from the City within the City”. Scout Valley is currently the City’s only Park designated as a Naturalized Area.

The City of Orillia offers a unique, fun and challenging 9-hole disc golf course at Homewood Park free of charge. Installed in 2006, the course has become a popular course among disc golf enthusiasts.

All diamonds at Kitchener Park, J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park and one diamond at McKinnell Square Park are lit. All ball diamonds are booked in 2.5 hour time slots.

Disc golf is a lot like traditional golf, except players use specially made plastic flying discs instead of balls and clubs, and throw them at an above ground target. The object of the game is to throw a golf disc into the target in the fewest number of throws.

Golfers are welcome to use their own discs, however, official golf discs can be borrowed from the Orillia Public Library. Rules, scorecard and course map for the disc golf course are available to print off on the City’s website at orillia.ca.

Kiwanis Skateboard Park

Band Stand In the 1800s it was common to gather at Civic Park (now Couchiching Beach Park) and listen to the Orillia Citizen’s Band, now known as the Kiltie Band. Hundreds of people used to come and watch the performance, so in 1909 Town Council approved the construction of a bandstand suitable for musical performances and presentations.

Beaches (Open July 1 - September 5, 2016) Orillia is nestled between two beautiful lakes and offers many places to swim and enjoy water sports. The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department operates two public beach areas. Couchiching Beach is located at the foot of Downtown Orillia and Moose Beach is located at J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park.

Moose Beach 450 Atherley Rd. Guards on duty: 11:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.

While beaches are fun, there are a few rules that must be followed: • Swim at your own risk when lifeguards are off duty • Know your limits and stay within them • Always swim with a buddy • Children 6 years and under must be within arms reach • Children under 10 must be supervised by an adult at all times • Vacate the water when you hear thunder • Obey the lifeguards • Smoking is prohibited within 20 metres of beach or playground area • Domestic animals are not allowed on the beach or in swim areas

The Kiwanis Skateboard Park was built in 1999 through the hard work of many people in the community. Some of the features of the Park include a fun box, bank, rails, stairs with rail and snake run.

Please consider the following when using the Park: • Helmets must be worn by all participants • All litter must be placed in containers • No foul language is permitted • No food or drink are permitted on the concrete skate pad

Leash-Free Dog Zones Dogs love to run free. With that in mind, the City of Orillia has created two Leash-Free Dog Zones, where owners can take their dogs and let them run, unleashed, in a fenced-in area built especially for man’s best friend.

Clayt French Park 114 Atlantis Dr. The Leash-Free Dog Zone at Clayt French Park is a small leash-free zone, which was first created as a pilot project. It proved to be one of the most popular features of the Park.

Kitchener Park 25 Kitchener St. Open since 2011, this large Leash-Free Dog Zone within Kitchener Park serves as a social hub for dog owners and their pets.

Leash-Free Dog Zone: Rules • Dogs must be kept on a leash until they have reached the designated Leash-Free Dog Zone.

• All dogs must be licensed and fully vaccinated.

• No children under the age of 12 are permitted unless supervised by an adult (this area is designated as a “Dog Zone” - it is not a children’s play area).

• Dogs that show aggression are not allowed within the Leash-Free Dog Zone.

• Please clean up after your dog.

• Do not bring food of any kind into the Leash-Free Dog Zone (this includes all dogs treats) as food is a trigger for fights between dogs.

• You are liable for any injury caused by a dog under your supervision. Users of the Park assume the risk of injury / damage to themselves and their dog.

• Please remember that this is not a training area for your dog.

Naming/Renaming Athletic Fields Council and Members of the Recreation Advisory Committee have decided that existing and future athletic fields should perhaps be named/re-named after Orillians who have made ‘extraordinary contributions’ to the sports of ball or soccer. The criterion for selection would be participation, building, or volunteering within our community.

Nominations are submitted to the Recreation Advisory Committee for consideration. Written submissions must clearly demonstrate that an individual meets the criteria. The Recreation Advisory Committee will then summarize their recommendation in a report to Council.

Naming/Renaming City Parks Council and the Recreation Advisory Committee have decided that existing and future parks should perhaps be named/renamed after Orillians who have made “extraordinary contributions” to Orillia.

The onus is on the person/group submitting the suggestion to prove the worthiness of the nominee and convince the Recreation Advisory Committee that the contribution of the nominee is extraordinary and fits the rationale. Nominations are submitted to the Recreation Advisory committee for consideration. The Recreation Advisory Committee will then summarize their recommendation in a report to Council. Pavilion Rentals Parks, Recreation and Culture offers two pavilions at Couchiching Beach Park for rent. These pavilions can accommodate large events with picnic table seating for up to 60. Pavilion rentals include hydro and water availability. For rental rates of pavilions, please visit orillia.ca.

Pavilions are generally used for annual events such as family reunions; therefore, past users have until the last business day of October to request in writing the same weekend they had in the current year for the next year. After this deadline, all requests received are booked on a first-come-first-served basis. Pavilions can not be booked until all the summer special events in the park have been booked. Users can expect Parks, Recreation and Culture to contact them in early February regarding their pavilion request. Requests for pavilions must be in writing. The request can be submitted in the form of an email, by mail, and by fax or in person at the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department office (see page 4 for contact information). This written request must include your full name, address, a day-time and evening telephone number, the date, times and facility being requested. Once your request has been received, a permit will be created in our booking system. You will be contacted by the department once your permit is ready to be signed. If you would like, the permit can be emailed, faxed, mailed or picked up (depending on the time line of your booking).

Depending on the time line of your booking, payment may be due immediately. This will be discussed with you after your request has been received. There is also a pavilion shelter available at both Homewood Park and Orma Drive Park, which are available on a firstcome-first-served basis. Rotary Aqua Theatre The historic Rotary Aqua Theatre was built in 1958 and has been home to many concerts in Couchiching Beach Park. During the summer months, Sunday Evenings Band Concerts take place each week showcasing bands from across the province to the delight of crowds in the hundreds. The Rotary Aqua Theatre is also available for rent.

Splash Pads (Open June 1 - October 1, 2016) There’s nothing like a refreshing blast of cool water on a hot day. Orillia offers four unique splash pads at the following Parks: Clayt French Park 114 Atlantis Dr.

Hillcrest Park 255 Matchedash St. N. These splash pads are open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., from June to October. At each facility, the splash pad is started with a push activation button.

While fun is the goal, there are some rules that must be followed: • All children must have adult supervision at all times • Bikes, scooters, skateboards, or roller blades are not permitted • Sand and/or dirt is not permitted in the splash pad area • Climbing on splash pad features is prohibited • No pets allowed – except service animals • The splash pad must be vacated at the first sound of thunder • There is no smoking within 20m of splashpads

Tennis Courts Orillia has two lit tennis courts at Kitchener Park, four lit courts at the West Orillia Sports Complex and two unlit courts at Morningstar Park.

The courts at the West Orillia Sports Complex are home of the Orillia Tennis Club (OTC). During certain prime times (listed below), until the end of September, the courts will only be available to the club. The OTC has been formed by a group of local tennis enthusiasts to ensure maximum use of tennis court facilities in Orillia.

The Orillia Tennis Club The Orillia Tennis Club plays at the tennis courts at the West Orillia Sports Complex. Blocks of court time are set aside for members’ use.

Join them for plenty of tennis activity including round robins with a friendly atmosphere and social events. Or, you may prefer to play with a friend or your family. This is not a private club, but the Orillia Tennis Club does pay the City of Orillia for the blocks of court time set aside for its use. Wet Fields/Diamonds Policy If the fields are wet the calcine clay infield is designed to absorb water, however when it is saturated, the water remains on the infield creating a slippery, grease-like surface. Even with cleats, this becomes a health and safety issue. Usage of turf areas when wet causes turf to be torn out. These areas become rutted and invaded with weeds which lowers the quality of the turf. Please help us ensure your use of safe, high quality fields.

“Leaf” Your Own Legacy On October 23, 2015, the bronze leaf of the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was installed in J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park alongside a 13foot sculpture entitled “Golden Leaves” in honour of the folk legend Gordon Lightfoot. The artist, Timothy P Schmalz, took inspiration from the album “Gord’s Gold”, for the larger piece, with the smaller maple leaves paying tribute to songs from Lightfoot’s repertoire. Schmalz’s vision is to create a pilgrimage across North America, leading visitors to the primary sculpture in Orillia. The first two leaves installed in Orillia are part of a generous gift to the City by the Rudolph P. Bratty Family Foundation. Help Schmalz in his vision by making a similar contribution to the City of Orillia’s trail system and cultural identity. Donate a Tree Planting times are in the spring and again the fall. Requests for a spring planting must be received by March 1st and by August 1st for a fall planting. Once you have decided to proceed, a site visit will be scheduled to discuss the species and location opportunities. Please note that there are no spots left in Couchiching Beach Park. The City plants several different types of trees and varieties that are considered appropriate for various locations in our parks. Suitable tree types are dependent on the specific location. Our City Arborist will help you select a tree that suits a desired location. Special Order Tree Donations will be determined at the time of order. The tree may be selected from a list of approved species.

Standard Tree donations begin at $450.

Donate a Bench People may make donations towards a new park bench or an existing bench. Whether existing or new, a donor recognition plaque will be installed on the bench. Once you have decided to proceed with a bench donation, a site visit will be scheduled to choose a bench and location. Please note that there are no spots left in Couchiching Beach Park. We will try to accommodate all requests, however the Department will have the final decision as to the type of bench and its location. The Ironsites Bench is available in a few selected parks while the Orillia Bench is available widely throughout the park system. Two types of benches are available: Orillia Bench - $700 donation and Ironsite Bench -$1400 donation.

Trail Etiquette When travelling multi-use trails, you may encounter many different forms of trail users, such as hikers, bikers, dog walkers, roller bladers, etc. Trail etiquette can be described as the “polite way to use trails.”

The City of Orillia has over 29 kms of multi-use trails including loop trails, paved trails and natural trails. Our trails connect to each of our surrounding communities, highlighting incredible scenery that Orillia and surrounding areas have to offer. In addition to spanning across Orillia, out Lightfoot Trail System highlights natural heritage features and historical land marks throughout the entire City. The Lightfoot Trail System is a dual trail that stretches along the north-east end of the City connecting the Uhthoff Trail to the Atherley Narrows, with a spike that links to the Oro-Medonte Rail Trail.

Active Transportation Committee

• Respect the trail and adjacent landowners.

• Be aware and courteous to all other trail users.

• Walk, ride or cycle in single file in the middle of the trail.

• When approaching fellow trail users, stay to the right.

• When approaching slower moving trail users from behind on a bicycle or E-bikes sound your bell or horn and safety pass on the their left.

• Clean up after pets and keep them leashed and in control to avoid them zigzagging across the trail.

Trail use is a privilege that should not be abused or disrespected.

Making trail etiquette a priority allows everyone to enjoy the outdoors and have a good time while being safe and courteous. - Supplied by the Ontario Trails Council. Limited-speed motorcycles, motor-assisted bicycles (moped), pocket bikes, electric and motorized scooters and segway scooters are not permitted on the trail system in addition to the large motorized vehicles such as cars, trucks, snowmobiles, ATVs, dirt bikes etc.

The Active Transportation Committee (formerly Trails for Life) is composed of eleven members including one Council member. The Committee advises Council on the use, maintenance, and promotion of the Lightfoot Trail System and Scout Valley.

Part of the Committee’s mandate is to meet with community groups or individuals, assist with completing reports, make recommendations regarding special projects (i.e. Regan House), research and report to Council on grant programs and available funding. Members of the Committee may serve a maximum of six consecutive years. The Active Transportation and Trails Advisory Committee operates within the terms of reference, policies and guidelines of Council and Council is the final authority on all matters.

Clayt French Park Loop Clayt French Park loop is located in Clayt French Park at 114 Atlantis Drive and has limited parking available. This loop circles around an open field and is easily accessible from the parking lot.

Length: 0.3 km

Homewood Park Loop The Homewood Park loop is located in Homewood Park at 68 Woodside Drive. The park is also accessible from Homewood Avenue and Allan Street. The loop traverses the entire park and is visible from all vantages of the park making it an ideal place to take your kids for a leisurely stroll.

Millennium Trail The Millennium Trail is a 3.0 m wide paved trail that runs adjacent to Orillia’s Lake Couchiching’s spectacular shoreline from the Ramara and Ganaraska Trail within the Township of Ramara northerly to the Uhtoff Trails within the Township of Severn . This 9.5 kilometre shared-use recreation trail significantly enhances the attractiveness of this region for tourists, as well as promoting a healthy lifestyle for local residents.

The trail is open year round and runs through major parks such as J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park , Veteran’s Memorial Park , Centennial Park and Couchiching Beach Park and is a segment of the Trans Canada Trail.

J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park Loop The loop located in J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park at 450 Atherley Road and has ample parking available. The trail gently loops around the perimeter of the park along the water’s edge. This loop also features a number of historical information plaques for you to enjoy along the way.

This 2.0 m wide granular trail runs from the intersection of Old Barrie Road and University Avenue westerly around the perimeter of a major storm detention facility located south of the West Orillia Sports Complex . The 0.8 kilometre recreation trail is in a recently naturalized setting using native trees , shrubs and wild flowers and offers a glimpse into modern storm water management practices and the influx of water birds who inhabit newly created wetlands.

University Avenue Trail The University Avenue / West Ridge Boulevard Trail is a 3.0 m wide paved trail which runs from the Old Barrie Road intersection with University Avenue to its northern end at the intersection of Monarch Drive and West Ridge Boulevard. This 2.8 kilometre shared-use recreation trail is open year round and provides a community connection to Scout Valley , West Orillia Sport Complex , Lakehead University and West Ridge Park .

Scout Valley Scout Valley is a naturalized park that consists of three individual loop trails. This park can be accessed from Line 15 North, Old Barrie Road or Forest Home. The Line 15 parking entrance is also home to Regan House.

How To Read Trail Blazes: A Skill Everyone Should Know The Scout Valley trails are marked with blazes that match the colour of the trail that you are on; for instance, the Sugarbush Trail is marked with orange blazes, the Algonquin Trail is marked with green blazes, and the Homestead Trail is marked with blue blazes. Keep an eye on these different blazes when hiking to avoid getting lost.

Blazes are rectangles of paint usually about 15 cm high and 5 cm wide on trees, fence posts, and rocks. The blazes may vary in size depending on the surroundings. Typically the blaze faces you as you approach. If the path ahead is not obvious, another blaze should be visible from the first. If the path is straightforward, the blazes are usually less frequent.

If you lose the trail, return to where you saw the last blaze and look carefully for the next blaze. If the trail is rerouted for any reason, such as for tree regeneration, the blazes are usually covered over with dark paint. Always follow proper blazes staying off closed sections of the trail.

Trails at Scout Valley As trail users we must constantly ask ourselves can the next one hundred people down the trail do what I am doing and not leave trace of their passing? Trails by their very nature are intrusions on the landscape and actually change the landscape. Ensuring that we work together to create a natural experience that meets all user needs without blazing new and unofficial trails not only protects the natural environment we all enjoy, but also helps to soften the impact of the many park users. POLICIES In Detail This guide is organized by age category (Preschool, Adult, etc.) and then by program category (Fitness, Special Interest, etc.) Please be aware that Aquatics is located at the beginning and has its own category. Once you have selected a program of interest, please refer to the registration details below the general description. Some courses fill up quickly, so be sure to register promptly. This guide is produced by the City of Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture Department and is printed and distributed by the Orillia Packet & Times. Staff have worked hard to ensure this guide is accurate; however, due to the seasonal format we follow, changes might occur after we have gone to print. Additional copies of this brochure are available from the Parks, Recreation and Culture office at 50 Andrew St. South, Suite 300, Orillia or view the online version at orillia.ca.

Personal Information Personal information is collected in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, R.S.O. 1990, c.M. 56 under the authority of the Municipal Act 2001, S.O. 2001, c 25 and will be used by the City of Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture Department for the operation of recreation programs. Inquiries about the collection or use of this information should be directed to the City’s Freedom of Information Co-ordinator.

Class Postponement / Cancellations If it is necessary to cancel a class due to inclement weather, school board cancellations, pool closures, instructor illness, etc. every attempt will be made to re-schedule the class. However, if the class cannot be rescheduled, a pro-rated refund will be issued. The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department reserves the right to withdraw, postpone, cancel or combine classes, to limit/increase registration or change course locations at any time. Please note that credits left on a registrant’s account will expire 24 months after the date of the original credit entry if not obtained.

The best way to secure your spot is online. Submission of a registration form does not guarantee a place in the recreation program. All registrations will be processed in the order they are received.

Registrations are not confirmed until you receive a receipt. If a registration form is received by the office prior to the registration start date, it will be processed, as time allows, starting on the applicable registration date.

Photographs / Video

Senior Citizens’ Rate Seniors will receive a 25% discount on all recreation programs. Please write “senior” on your registration form as well as your birthdate. If registering online or by touch-tone telephone, your discount will be automatically applied. Non-resident seniors deduct 25% from the nonresident rate. Please note: the senior rate applies to any registrant who is 60 years of age or older.

Non-City Resident Policy All recreation programs have a rate for City of Orillia residents and a rate for non-residents. A non-resident is defined as anyone who does not pay taxes directly to the City of Orillia. The programs offered by the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department are subsidized by municipal taxes, so we keep the cost as low as possible for those who already contribute to the municipal tax base. Twenty five percent (25%) will be added to the registration costs of non-residents. The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department reserves the right to request proof of residency.

Prorating of Program Fees Parks, Recreation and Culture does NOT prorate fees for late registration of programs and camps.

NSF Cheques The City of Orillia charges an administration fee of $33.00 for each NSF cheque received.

HST HST is not included in the pricing shown and is only charged on programs for adults over the age of 14.

Once a class/camp is filled, interested registrants will be placed on a waiting list in the order the registration is received. It is recommended to go on the waiting list as we endeavour to accommodate people by expanding the class size or creating an additional class.

Unless the participant or guardian indicates otherwise, Parks, Recreation and Culture will assume permission for pictures to be taken during programs to be used for promotion.

Refunds A full refund will be issued prior to the start of an activity only: • When an activity is cancelled by the Department.

• When the date, time or location for the recreation/culture program is changed by the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department and prohibits attendance.

Refunds/credits will be issued up to seven days prior to the start of a program with an administrative fee of 10%. Check page 9 for information on how to withdraw using the S.U.N. System. Medical refund requests must be accompanied by a doctor’s certificate/note and the 10% administrative fee will be waived. It will only be processed up to the halfway point of any recreation/culture program. Absolutely no refunds will be given after the mid-point of a program. The refund will be pro-rated based on the number of classes left in the recreation/ culture program at the time the request is received, regardless of the date the registrant stopped attending the recreation/culture program.

Transfers Transfers from one course to another are permitted up to five business days prior to the start of the recreation program. In the case of swimming lessons, transfers are permitted after the first lesson, and only if there is space, upon approval of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department. To transfer into a different course, visit the S.U.N. System.
