ABOUT ME I am a Turkish architect who loves travelling , meeting with new people and discovering other cultures. Besides my personal interests , I am more into simplicity and sustainability on architectural design. To be more precise , I am interested on how to deal with social issues within urban and architectural design approaches , use and design of public and collective spaces , reuse and renovation of space , urban rehabilitation.

Hoboken is one of the suburb of Antwerp which is one of the well known immigrant district and its urban fabrics is mainly comprised by low rise typical Belgian houses and social houses . The 3 Blocks pop up middle of Hoboken in contrast to existing urban fabric. On the other hand , today , Flander faces with density problem . In light with that this project seeks how different architectural approaches can be solution . From this point , the 3 Blocks caught my attention , because , nowadays , not just in Antwerp but also all around the world , we have those kind of cheap and fast constructed buildings which are losing their functions and flexibility. So this project examines , how an existing high rise building can be sustainable on the perspective of social life , reuse and density .

Master Plan The ground floor activities directly affect the urban life of district. Nowadays , lack of different activites , the opportunities of hoboken has been facing extinctions . According to those new functıons and narrow street pattern were added to ground level where people can gather easily , giving more opportunity to people for interactıon.

UNIT | A Living/Working Unite for Jewellery Designer Nowhere St. Jerome in His study is a painting by Italian Renaissance master Antonello da Messina . In the painting , there are two major spaces which are basicly outdoor and indoor space and which were not defined precisely, and according to that painter let you to complete the sense of space with details.If we concentrate on painting , the working space of St Jerome is located on the center of painting which was defined by furniture. In addition to that furniture created its own space which is somehow depended on indoor space and diametrically independed on space as well . However , the space can be completed via focusing on the details of painting such as nosie of animals , sounds of trees and river etc. on mind and as a result of that a furniture was designed which can serve as a working and living space and also which defines the space . According to that ,the quality of exterior space was attempted to bring into interior space with a wintergarden which behaves as a part and also apart of furniture to divide the space as well . Furthermore the hyrachy of indoor space was tried to created by using different levels which used to concrete the differantation of uses on the space, on the one hand via using different frames , the space had been divided and the relation between indoor and outdoor space was tried to empower. To be more precise about the design of interior space which is comprised one integrated system that was comprised by two adjacent spaces which are wintergarden and working-living area. Firstful according to re-consideration of what makes a furniture , It was re-thought and focesed on the structure and the elements which complete the furniture. Consequently , the furniture was determined via developing a modular system (which is 80cmx80cm) to keep the space with minimum dimension (total area ; 38m2, height 4m) and also by adding elements on the structure to create a continiuos / an integrated furniture which can serve for all space . Thus , a modular system built more opportunity to divide the wintergarden from living-working space but in a way it also created a flexible edge in between those spaces. Somehow the furniture became a seperation wall and also a surface which can create more space according to use. Finally , the furniture was comprised by 4 different area whichare wintergarden , working area,sleeping area- bathroom and kitchen-living area. 12

PATIO | Space for Economy - Living / Working Typology 1

Gent | BELGIUM The living and working activities can not be thought seperated from each other which had been varried since early ages. In line with that the identity of urban space was comprised with different variation of living-working activities. However , in the early ages living-working activities were taking place on nature or an interaction with nature but with industrializtion urban spaces became denser and the connection between nature and living-working started to dissappear. On the one hand , if we consider working space precisely , we can see that working spaces converted to huge production spaces with industrialization which were usually located on the out skirt of cities but today many of them located close to city centers as a result of urban expansion. However, nowadays , many of old vacant industrial buildings pop up in urban space which are very important part of urban memory as well. In conjuction with that , if we concentrate on the project site , it can be easily seen that it carries the identity of old industry with it s own special elements . As a consequence of those critiques and observations , 3 main question stand out which are respectively how demolition and rebuilding are sustainable while we are facing with dozens of vacant spaces in our cities , how the interaction between living-working activities and nature can come together again and the last question is how we can convert the existing space into a new livable space with new and old combination . At first step , the structure of building had been highlighted which had been constructed with different elements such as brick bearing wall , steel structure , space frames etc. Basicly , the space A had been built first following that , respectively , B and C had been added to main space. As you see on structural scheme (figure 1) , the structure of building had variation of 3m’s multitudes. B

Hence, a gridal system which is comprised by 3mx3m modules used to developed new space. In light of this , 2 different typologies have been designed according to 6mx6m modular system which also suits with 3mx3m modular system perfectly. That 2 different typologies consist doublex dwellings , which are for 4 people and for 3 people. Thus , those modules gave more flexibility to apply different combination of the 3 different typologies which are overlapping to each other via patios. To be more precise about patio which means an area usually paved adjoining a house,working unit and used as an area for out door lounging and dinning etc. in dictionary.On the other hand ,if we consider different example of the combination of patio , it has been used as a common ground to provide a breathe and light for the spaces.In this case we can take into account as examples as a traditional working space; Turkish Han (figure 2 ) and as a modern living area Mies van der Rohe s Patio House (figure 3 ) which are always own a tree on the patio which is a symbol of life and breath. Futhermore, in this project the combination of new and old has been associated within re-using the old industrial building as a face and envelop for unites, besides that the new part of building has been designed according to same idea of having envelope which creates opportunity also for good insulation and preserving the industrial face as well. However ,basicly ateliers , shops and cafes are located on ground floor and top of it living-working units are located on top of them. The corridors around ateliers have been left as a common ground for circulation and having more light with transparent roof top , apart from that main corridor which is middle of building composes an atrium or a passage between public space and street, and also a collective space for building. To sum up , the aim of project is combining two different identity which are old and new faces of industry with same approach of using space and the variation of patio houses.

YOUTH CENTER | Next Economy Gent | BELGIUM The aim of the project is therefore to bring the inhabitants of Rabot altogether in a place they can identify with and that can be a reference for them, starting from the youth, which we see as the future of the neighborhood and as potential mediators among adults. As the Sint Josef church will be deconsecrated in 2017, this would be an excellent place to take over for a youth center, but also a green energy producing gym, that will host everyone who is willing to work out and some quiet areas to study together with a cafeteria where the community is also welcome. • Connecting Rabot with the rest of the city • Abondened churches in Gent • The access network connecting the churches • Different programs in different neighborhoods • More biodiversity by adding and connecting green area NATURE The network suggested by the design is hold by a green line of trees and greenery which will connect different spots with adding value to the city and neighborhood as well. ECONOMY The design approach is to guide the youth of new comers and current residents of the neighborhood with an education which can help them with more handy stuff such as arts and crafts, and will bring new possibilities for the people who don’t want to gain an academic degree to find suitable jobs in future.

PLAY CENTER | Intersectional Collectivity Gent | BELGIUM The strong attention the Dok North located in Gent Dampoort area gained after the presentation of the new development project by the Netherlands based office OMA has left aside the development of the rest of the south Dampoort area. For this reason, Infiniti Studio focused on the possibilities that could complement the development of the rest of the area to revitalize a whole zone and be able to benefit more people with different back grounds. After reading the way city blocks are configured a specific typology brought the team’s attention. Big areas inside the city blocks are destined for garage boxes. Reducing the possibility for public spaces or other sort of activities. The new mobility plan for the City of Ghent’s stipulates that by 2050 there will be a dramatic decrease in the number of private automobiles in the streets due to the increasing offer of public transport and bicycle routes that will serve the area. Therefore a at least 50% of the garage boxes that at currently occupying an important area of the city blocks could be transformed into more productive an community including spaces. Conducting a deep research and having a close participation with the locals helped developed a series of functions that meet the needs of the population in the south Dampoort area. All of these strategically located new functions are connect with each other directly or indirectly creating a network that brings up the area willing to add character to this renovated zone. The following works include cultural, recreational, office and community spaces that will be developed in the next pages. Each emphasizing different approaches regarding the borders that separate the existing private space and the new function suggested inside the new found spaces resulting in an infinite way of incorporating life inside the courtyards.

BECOMING KRONENBURG | Re-Appropration of Social Space Gent | BELGIUM The identity of Kronenburg is comprised by living-working conditions with heavy industry, small craftsman ateliers, Conforta houses as craftsman family houses and low cost family houses. In addition to these conditions, the other most important identical element of Kronenburg is being multi-national district and as oppose to that there is not enough social space where people can gather at outside of their houses. As a result, there is not enough collective social life in the district. On the other hand, there are different kinds of actions occurring in Kronenburg and as a consequence of these actions, there had been built different edges in between physical spaces which also meanwhile affect the social condition of neighbourhood. This situation basically turns to Kronenburg into a hub and makes it a vulnerable place. From this point of view, this research will try to define an understanding of local life of Kronenburg and increase the social life within creating a collective social space in Kronenburg with its own opportunities. As a consequence, following questions will try to generate a perception to understand how important to create a convivial collective space in Korenenburg. [1] How re-definition of existing edges can generate qualified social space in Kronenburg ? [2] How a public space can become a catalyst in between living-working conditions? [3] How actually creating a social space can be beneficial for industry and city of Antwerp? Regarding to my research there are many different urban conditions which directly affect the area , my proposal suggest to build up new spaces within timeline which is designed according to new plans of Albert Canal and moving process of Depannage la France . Actuall, it is important to underline that each steps within timeline and the spaces which ones they created intermingle with each other. You can follow each steps respectively; Considering existing public spaces in Kronenburg first step proposes to temporary use and activation of vacant spaces. Following first step, second step offers to add more workshop spaces on ground floor which can be used by JES and inhabitants and a living unit to increase social control as regards to existing urban-social conditions. 32

However, third step proposes to build up a new building instead of demolished wooden hangar in accordance to its volume and forms which gives an identity to existing urban space and also it can be seen as the landmark of backyard of Kronenburg. Besides, this building works as a flexible interior public space and addition to that, this step proposes to re-use of existing industrial storage as a new start-up building for industry. Furthermore; fourth step suggests to construct new living-working area which can create a social control and a sustainable-social working environment on the backyard of Kronenburg. On the other hand, underneath of this new living-working area , a new parking plot is located which can serve for 152 cars that will help to reduce outside-parking pollution in the district. Finally, fifth step proposes to re-use of existing storage for temporary activities which can be held by inhabitants and industry and will allow spreading out the activities open public spaces. To be more precise, fifth step creates and opportunity to build a bridge among all steps to intermingle with each other and finalized this process . Finally , I would like to conclude my research via identifying how I see social space and how I tried to build it by my proposal in Kronenburg as regards to my research. However, it is important to start with how I understand the social space after my research ; Social space is a common ground which allows people to meet and interact via different actions and activities which keep the space alive. As a result of this composition, the space becomes a social product which creates different level of osmosis. In line with that I tried to create in between public spaces among different circumstances and users by different functions and forms. From this point of view , my proposal consists of different levels of osmosis of different characteristic spaces within this it gives more opportunity to develop better qualified urban space for users , inhabitants of Kronenburg , industry , and from bigger scale city of Antwerp. Finall , this new vision of Kronenburg provides not only qualified urban space on district scale but also provides qualified urban space on city scale within being a continuity of master plan of Park Spoor Noord. So the impact of proposal creates different opportunities on different scales of urban spaces.

ATHENS’ S TERRACE | Terrace for the Acropolis Athens | GREECE Athens is a city which has high level of public social life and where the different layers of history and culture and also the warm weather conditions play an active role on public life of the city . However , the cultural and entertainment events usually take place around Acropolis or the districts around it . Especially if we concentrate on the competition area , it s one of the most used pedestrian route where many urban actions randomly take place in the city. So the location of area is a good potential public space for future. According to that , the first ambition of the design process of design process should be to create an inclusive public space . Further more the design process should take into account as a part of the continuity of public-social life and to create an intermingle in between public and private spaces due to increase the osmosis on the border of public and private spaces or outside and inside spaces. Because , with this way we can empower the democracy on the spaces. From this angle , my design focuses on to strengten the relationship in between inside and outside space or public and private spaces with in creating inclusive and flexible spaces. Firstly , the location of green area was very important for my design process . It should be a part of building and also a part of building to be open for everyone’s usage . Subsequently , it should be a space which could be a breathing space and a cooling space for the building. So the folding façade system gives a chance to building to create an inclusive public space inside the building. On the other hand , the amphi theatre is a space which serves to empower publicity in the building as well as a passage with being stairs and ramp in between green area and restaurant-bar and also it s a space where people can come , rest or just pass ,sit and watch the view of Acropolis and green area. In the main time , these actions convert the building as a real terrace where people can spent their leisure time.

Secondly , the façade system flexibility can make the building an inclusive public space or in contrary a closed hub in accordance with opening hours. Besides , the management office consciously separated from other functions to make it an introduction area and a control space which is located on the main entrance of the building. Thirdly , the area in between entrance of auditorium and green area is a passage which can be used also as an open exhibition area. On the one hand , the lounge of auditorium can work as a temporary exhibition area as well . Since the exhibition areas are death spaces without events , designing passages and exhibition halls together can give more flexibility to users of building. At the same time , rethinking of connection between inside and outside space , the window in auditorium aims to create a visual connection among different spaces. Following that the services areas such as storage ( which also serves for all building ) , public wc s ( Woman , man and disabled wcs / which can be accessed from public space via lounge ),chaning room for staffs and cloackroom are located around auditorium . A part from these , parking plot for 20 cars is located on basement floor and it is connected to building directly with a small passage next to auditorium . Thus it just serves for building users and it is accessible from outside via auditorium lounge. In addition to those , lastly , I should underline that the open spaces ( beside over green area ) has sun shading roof system to create a comfortable environment for users. To sum up , the design of the building should rethink against to the classical design approaches with sharp borders among spaces . As a result of that I tried to develop new understanding via dissolving the borders in between outside and inside or public and private spaces to create inclusive and flexible building.

“De Gentbrugse Meersen” is one of the four greennpoles that are being equipped in Ghent. Greenpoles are big park- and nature reserves. “De Gentbrugse Meersen” will take in roughly 240 hectare. The main entrance of “de Gentbrugse Meersen” is in the middle of the residentials at the Braemkasteelstraat in Gentbrugge. In the area of those neighbourhoods the attention is at recreation. Being invited to play sports, gardening, picknicking, having a conversation with the neighbour and much more. The deeper you explore the area, the more nature and forests you will find. “De Gentbrugse Meersen” expands all the way to the “Schelde”.Along the way you will come across multiple places with open waters which are attractive to certain birds. “De Gentbrugse Meersen”hoffers a bit of everything for everyone.You can live yourself to the fullest and all of this is just around the corner of the city Ghent. However ,in cantiliver sport canteen project ,two different combination of structural systems have been used which are concrete and light steel structure systems. In addition to that vierendeel trusses have been used to create flexible space and a stiff system . According to create a stiff system concrete walls and diagonal cables and additional cluster coloums were used to make system stronger and stable. Futhermore , IPE coloums and beams have been used as a result of moment of inertia and having the lightest structure .
