Yeovil and Mendip Branch, part of the FSB Somerset and Wiltshire Region Warmly invite schools and FSB Members to be part of an Apprenticeship Event The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) are working together to host events around England entitled
‘Making Apprenticeships work for small businesses and getting young people ready for work’. The event in Somerset will be held on Tuesday, 11th February 2014 The Fleet Air Arm Museum, Ilchester, Somerset BA22 8HW, under Concord! 6 until 9pm This free event will be an opportunity to hear from Apprentices and their employers, to be part of the consultation process and to enjoy a light supper under concord! Background: The first event was held in London during National Apprenticeship week, featuring David Willetts MP, the Minister for Science and Universities, as the key speaker. The successful London event brought together businesses, schools and colleges to discuss the employability skills of young people and how businesses and schools can better engage to the benefit of young people and business. There was also a wide ranging discussion about how the Apprenticeships can be made to better suit small businesses. The project aims to develop an understanding of: The value of Apprenticeships To Young People; Schools and colleges; Employers; and Government as a worthy, stand-alone qualification and credible route for young people The process for taking on an Apprentice How; the benefit; the investment The aims, if successful, will lead to increased engagement between education and businesses. The project is based on the recommendations in ‘The Apprenticeship Journey’ report, which the FSB published in November 2012. Key findings in the report were that: Only 1/3 of FSB members work with their local schools or colleges. Many small businesses do not currently have a good understanding of the Apprenticeship scheme and what it could mean for them.
