Employee of the Year: Barbara Korn Barbara Korn, VPK teacher at the Early Learning Center of Excellence, is a certified teacher (K-6) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education who started working with Adult Education in 2007. Her first assignment was one-on-one with a child who had hydro encephalitis and needed aid in controlling her behaviors. Barbara worked closely with several special needs counselors to give this child the greatest opportunity to succeed in the classroom. When this child was transferred to another facility Barbara was assigned as a VPK teacher. Her knowledge of preparing children for Kindergarten is exceptional yet she continues to attend as many trainings as possible to increase her skills. She has been instrumental in providing instruction and assistance to children with special needs in the VPK classroom, often recognizing children who may need to be considered for ESE. Just recently, because the Department of Education has changed the VPK standards, she took it upon herself to revamp our lesson plan template to include the changes. She has also proven to be a leader among her peers at the Early Learning Center.

Teacher of the Year: David Nelson I began working for Adult Ed. in 2003 with the Commercial Vehicle Driving program as a part time instructor. With years of truck driving experience behind me, I felt very comfortable training and teaching for Flagler County Schools. What I had yet to learn was that by working for Flagler County Schools, opportunities were going to open up for me that I did not expect. Originally from New Jersey, and after High School, I began my transportation experience working for Education Reading Service delivering books to schools in the tri-state area. After several years with a municipal truck driving job, I moved to the southwest and experienced truck driving in and around the oil field. Regional, coast to coast, and local driving with various commodities and companies over the years has helped to make me efficient in my field. Having the opportunity to share this experience has truly changed my life. I began full-time with Adult Education in 2005 and became a Third Party Tester for the State of Florida which enabled me, in 2007, to be certified as an Examiner Trainer for the State of Florida and Flagler County Adult Education. I have been rewarded in so many ways and I am fortunate to work with students eager to learn and destined to change their lives. I would like to give thanks to my professional staff of instructors, and a special thanks to all my co-workers and administration for all of their support. It is a privilege to work with you all. Thanks to my wife Ginny for her constant support which helped me to be my best. I am truly honored and thankful to be nominated for Teacher of the Year for Flagler Technical Institute, Adult and Community Education.

Adult Activities Center

Sometimes our lives seem just too busy to fit one more thing in. But, if you need to obtain your GED diploma, improve basic academic skills, or increase your English language skills, these improvements to your life are just too important to set aside. Now, the availability of Adult Education has become even more convenient. Imagine having access to learning 24 hours a day/7 days a week/52 weeks a year! Great for stay-at-home moms, employees with long and/ or non-traditional hours, and others who may prefer learning in an on-line environment. If you have access to an Internet-connected computer and an email address, you could be on your way to online learning! While students will complete coursework on-line, they must first register in-person at Flagler Technical Institute, and take an assessment to evaluate their current academic or language skill level.

The Adult Activities Center provides activities and respite care for the “needs assistance” adult. It is a social, educational, recreational program designed to stimulate, enhance, and maintain quality of life. Daily activities include socialization, daily living skills, exercise to music, games, crafts, computers, and life skills in a fun learning environment. It also affords an opportunity to make viable friendships for people with limited independence. People are assisted and encouraged to be the “best they can be”. It is provided in a family-style environment.

Citizenship Citizenship Preparation Become a U.S. Citizen! For many local residents it is their dream to become a United States citizen. The Citizenship class is designed to assist students with the process of applying for citizenship, as well as the academic instruction to help students learn what is needed to pass the citizenship test. Some say the most difficult section of the test concerns vocabulary – note the multi-syllable words: Declaration of Independence, Emancipation Proclamation, inalienable rights! Classes include these vocabulary words and more. Class instruction utilizes books, audio CD’s and classroom discussion. In Citizenship class students learn about such topics as American culture, history, and voting rights. Flagler County Schools Adult & Community Education is proud to announce the next Business Incubator Program session — to be held in the Spring of 2012. The FSBI program provides Entrepreneurial Courses to individuals interested in starting a business. If accepted, candidates will be provided with a small office space, use of state-of-the-art office equipment, and administrative support. Most importantly, candidates will have access to experts in the fields of finance, marketing, logistics, and personnel for guidance and instruction. Why go to all this trouble just to start up a small business? Nationally, only 18% of all businesses survive their first five years. Of the 82% that fail, many do so in the first year. BUT, when they start out in an incubator, 87% of them succeed.

Swing Dance Variations Swing is the only dance that originated in America! There are many variations of swing and we will cover East Coast or single swing, triple swing and perhaps West Coast Swing if time permits. Many of the patterns are interchangeable and the dance choice is based on the speed (tempo) of the music! A fun and energetic class for beginners and intermediate dancers. 12W274 / 10.5 hrs / $45 Tu 7:00 PM–8:30 PM

Are you afraid of the gym? Does the thought of entering a gym intimidate you? Are you bored working out alone? Well, join this class and be alone no more. Your AFAA certified instructor will help you trim down and tone up while using the cardio machines inside the gym. From the bicycle to the elliptical to the treadmill, this cardio workout will help you bust boredom and burn more calories by changing your speed, resistance and/or incline throughout the workout. You’ll alternate intensity intervals where you’ll work at a high intensity along with recovery intervals. Tai Chi is a centuries old Chinese practice. Its slow, graceful, and fluid movements exercise the body and the mind through a series of postures that create a kind of synchronized dance called a form. This ancient exercise has been found to provide many health benefits such as improving strength, flexibility, and balance, lowering blood pressure and relieving stress. Tai Chi requires no special equipment or dress. All of the classes emphasize Awareness, Body Alignment, Balance, and Breath. Beginners class includes a gentle warm up, introduction to basic foot patterns and weight shifts, the first 1/3 of the Yang Family Short Form and Zhan Zhuang (Standing Meditation).

Sport Training - Bike & Run

Ever wish you had your own private Pilates instructor? Well, Belle Terre Swim & Racquet Club’s certified Pilates instructor, Chrissy Powell is at your service. She uses the large ball, bands, and light-weights in a fitness program designed to work the body from the inside out. Class will concentrate on centering the body by stabilizing the pelvis and training the muscles to be both movers as well as stabilizers. This training will improve posture and allow the spine to become more aligned. Muscles become balanced, and fluidity and grace are achieved in the process. This form of exercise is gentle, challenging, and individualized to fit each person’s fitness level.

Boost your Triathalon or Duathalon training with this essential Bike/Run sport training. This unique type of training is also called bricks, referring to training on two disciplines during the same workout, one after the other with minimal or no interruption in between, just as you would do in a triathlon or duathlon. We focus on the bike/run, mainly because the transition between bike and run is the toughest of the two during a triathlon. By doing a series of short repeats several times in the same workout we are teaching your legs and body to switch as fast as possible and as efficiently as possible between two very different kinds of effort. Don’t get stuck in the same old training routine, join us and see how we can help you in your next race!

Ines Casademont, who is very experienced in leading exercise groups for the senior population, will present simple and gentle exercises incorporating certain elements of yoga, isometrics, using weights properly, and balance techniques. QuickStart Tennis QuickStart Tennis is the new USTA format for children ages 5 – 10! QuickStart Tennis appropriately scales down all aspects of regulation tennis—including equipment, court dimensions, and scoring—so that the game becomes specifically tailored to the age and size of the child. The format is broken into two age groups: 7 & under and 10 & under, similar to models used successfully in other youth sports such as baseball. Children “play to learn” rather than “learn to play”.

Horseback Riding Horseback riding is a hobby that lasts a lifetime! If you have never ridden or would like to brush up on skills, P & L Stables offers lessons for beginners, intermediate, or accomplished riders. We even offer lessons for the ESE student who may have special needs. Lessons can be in the style of your choice: Hunt Seat Equitation, Dressage or Western Pleasure Riding. We teach safety skills students can take with them in any situation. Lessons are held at P & L Stables in Bunnell for 7 weeks. There is a $10 supplies fee.

Our classes have been so popular that we have expanded the program to include a new Friday afternoon class at the A1A center and a very special advanced class that children must try out for and pass a rigorous skills test! This group will eventually become a competitive team and play in local tournaments. Coach Smith makes learning Tennis fun and exciting. Ron and our new tennis instructor, Elliot James, also offer Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced adult tennis lessons. Please see the Sports section for times and days.

Swimming: Youth Only Synchro Swim Ballet in the water! Synchronized swimming is not only beautiful but is a great way for your child to make friends, tone their entire bodies, and learn fun dance moves in the water. The Synchro Belles Team won the 2011 National Gold Medal and are 6-time Florida State Champions. The only prerequisite for beginners is to possess the ability to float on their backs and swim one length of the pool - above or under water. It is helpful if the child has dance, gymnastics, tumbling or swimming experience, but these are not mandatory. Swimmers learn to set up and achieve athletic goals while also maintaining high academic standards.
