Adult & Community Education / Flagler Technical Institute

From the director Hello Flagler County! It’s that exciting time of year again – time for fresh starts and new beginnings. We kicked off fall with our FTI Open House on August 1st. Now is the time to make big decisions to improve your life! Our career and technical education programs at Flagler Technical Institute provide local, affordable, high-quality career training to help you launch your new career. All of us who work for Adult and Community Education/Flagler Technical Institute are passionate about our organization and the role we play in our community. Our programs touch and change lives at every age from infants through senior citizens. Our early learning program teaches beginning literacy and prepares young children for kindergarten and a love of learning. Visit our center today! Extended Day provides safe supervision before and after school, providing fun and educational activities that enrich children’s lives. New Beginnings helps parents get back on track to continue their education, and become better parents. Adult General Education gives people, young and old, the chance to earn a high school diploma or GED so they can become college and careerready. We also provide GED preparation and Parenting classes at the Flagler County Inmate facility, changing lives for the better. Did you know that we provide a teen-age parenting program (TAPP) which allows teen parents to stay in school to complete their high school education, while we care for their babies on-site? Community Education allows people of all ages to learn a variety of skills to enhance their quality of life – physically, mentally, culturally, intellectually, - and the social connections that are formed provide as much value as the educational experiences do. Our programs for adults with disabilities help individuals reach higher levels of independence, and enjoy social interaction and activities that improve their quality of life. Make-It Take-It assures that students who are at risk of being left behind as technology speeds ahead are not disadvantaged. The annual Home Show brings our whole community together supporting organizations, businesses, artists, and most importantly provides scholarships for our students. And we continually grow and add new programs to meet community needs. We’re always open to new ideas and suggestions. Do you have a skill or talent that you would like to share? Talk to us about becoming a Community Education teacher. Enjoy our Fall ‘A’ Schedule of Classes, find something interesting and sign up! Virginia Giaramita

Let’s all Keep Flagler Learning!

Thank You!

We want to thank the generous supporters of our Summer Camp, who have provided scholarship funds that allow children to experience the fun and excitement of this program who would otherwise not be able to afford to attend. Thank you to: The United Way, Ulympics participants, Flagler-Palm Coast Kiwanis, FTI Cosmetology Program, Flagler Home & Lifestyle Show vendors, & Wheels In Motion.

What’s New

Flagler Technical Institute’s Center for Educational Advancement offers a variety of classes designed to help adults make a positive change in their lives. As earning a high school diploma or learning English are just stepping stones to a better career, the focus of adult learning is preparing students for the workforce or continued education. Students will see an emphasis on career goal-setting, which will include class sessions in employability skills, financial literacy, and computer literacy as well as academic instruction. Choose from a credit-based high school program, enroll in GED Preparation classes, or learn English in our English as a Second Language classes. Most classes are held in the daytime, evening, and online. While books and materials are provided, students must pay a small tuition fee upon enrollment. The fee for Florida residents is $30. The fee for non-residents is $120. (Residency documentation required.) The one small tuition fee covers entrance into multiple classes. For more information, please call 446-7612 x 1834. Follow the path to a better life! Enroll today!

GED Prep & Adult High School Adult High School Earn your high school diploma in a setting where small class sizes help to create the ideal learning environment for the student who prefers to set his/her own pace. In this credit based program, students must meet all graduation requirements set by the School Board of Flagler County and the Florida Department of Education. The minimum age for attending the AHS is 16. To enroll, students (and a parent or legal guardian if the student is under the age of 18) must meet with Mr. Amato in Room 220 on the 2nd floor at Flagler Technical Institute. During this meeting, transcripts will be evaluated and the complete program will be explained. If both parent and student agree that the AHS program is the right choice, students will be set on a path to earn a standard Adult High School Diploma. Course Fee is $30 for Florida residents or $120 for non-residents. 14FA033 / 540 hrs M-F 8:30 AM–3:00 PM

Radical Forgiveness (by Colin Tipping) Radical Forgiveness by Colin Tipping. This class is taught by instructor Judie Zamba. The process of Radical Forgiveness challenges us to make a shift in our perception of the world and our interpretations of what happens to us in our lives. We have a choice to accept being a victim or not. Often times too, we say we have forgiven the situation but we still carry the imprint of the story. The victimized thought patterns can lead to resentment, depression, anger issues and ill health in time. Radical Forgiveness gives us the tools to work through the pain in a positive manner. We all have pain in our life but we do not have to experience pain and suffering.

North East Florida Dance Academy The Art of Dance Introducing your child to the art of dance at a young age sets the scene for a future that includes creative movement, flexibility, physical fitness, performance skills, and cultural appreciation. With classes for children as young as two years old through teens and adults, the North East Florida Dance Academy (NEFDA), through the Flagler County Schools’ Adult and Community Education Department, offers a wide variety of dance genres to interest students of all ages. NEFDA is dedicated to providing classical dance training with instructors who hold Bachelor’s Degrees in Education, teaching certificates from Dance Masters of America and Dance Educators of America, and who conduct classes with the utmost professionalism. Daily classes are offered year round in ballet, tap, and acrobatics at progressive levels. Children ages 2 to 3 ½ also have fun with Creative Dance, those ages 4 to 5 ½ may participate in a special PreSchool Dance class. As children get older they may join classes in jazz, musical theatre, lyrical, and hip hop styles of dance. Children 12 and older may advance to Ballet on Pointe. Class fees are very reasonable and discounts are offered for multiple and combination classes. Students enjoy the excitement of performing at the annual end of year recital, and other dance performance experiences. Encourage your children in the arts and let them experience the joy of dance and performance.
