GED Advanced & College Prep

Math Tutoring

How will you advance to the next level? College and Career Preparation is the key! Did you know that the majority of the fastest growing jobs require more than a high school diploma – either a post-secondary certificate or an Associate’s degree. Students can prepare for the PERT, ACT, and/or SAT college placement tests, as well as learn college success skills, such as, organizing, studying, note taking and more! Career choices will be explored by looking at personality, interests, and strengths. This course is designed for you if your next step is college or other post-secondary education.

This class offers four private, one hour lessons for those students who need remediation or just a brush-up in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus or Math in preparation for G.E.D. or High School.

Writing Creatively This class has introduced many new students to a most exciting form of creative self-expression that has allowed them to discover their voice—their own personal style, their unique rhythm and flow of ideas—in an atmosphere that encourages freedom of expression, experimentation, and the joy of writing.    If you love to write, need a muse to inspire you, or want to explore writing for the first time, this is the class for you.  This class will nurture your style, help sharpen your skills, and inspire your creative self to grow no matter what style or genre you choose to develop or explore.

Each session of the course will focus on a single “era” in the history of “classical” music - Medieval-Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern. The sessions will involve some discussions, listening to selected works which are recognized to be important reflections both historically and philosophically of their times, and requiring little if any technical knowledge of music. If your idea is “I don’t know much but I know what I like”, my hope is that you will know more, and more about WHY you like it, at the end of every session. The only requirements for this course are open ears and open minds, open to challenge and receptivity. Aug 17–Oct 12 Fall / FTI

Ballet in the water! Synchronized swimming is not only beautiful but is a great way for your child to make friends, tone their entire body, and learn fun dance moves in the water. The Synchro Belles Team is a nationally ranked synchronized swimming team and 6 time State Champions. The only pre-requisite for the beginners level is to possess the ability to float on their backs and swim one length of the pool - above or under water. It is also helpful if the child has any dance, gymnastic, tumbling or swimming background, but these are not mandatory. Swimmers not only learn to set and achieve athletic goals but also focus on maintaining high academic standards. The Synchro Belles welcome your child to be a part of this growing sport.

North East Florida Dance Academy

The Art of Dance

Introducing your child to the art of dance at a young age sets the scene for a future that includes creative movement, flexibility, physical fitness, performance skills, and cultural appreciation. With classes for children as young as two years old through teens and adults, the North East Florida Dance Academy (NEFDA), through the Flagler County Schools’ Adult and Community Education Department, offers a wide variety of dance genres to interest students of all ages. NEFDA is dedicated to providing classical dance training with instructors who hold Bachelor’s Degrees in Education, teaching certificates from Dance Masters of America and Dance Educators of America, and who conduct classes with the utmost professionalism. All instructors are employed by the Flagler County School District and are fingerprinted and background checked to ensure student safety. The North East Florida Dance Academy has been operated by Adult and Community Education for over eleven years. Well organized and smooth running daily classes are offered year round. Classes are held in ballet, tap, and acrobatics at progressive levels. Children ages 2 to 3 ½ also have fun with Creative Dance, those ages 4 to 5 ½ may participate in a special Pre-School Dance class. As children get older they may join classes in jazz, musical theatre, lyrical, and hip hop styles of dance. Children 12 and older may advance to Ballet on Pointe. Class fees are very reasonable and discounts are offered for multiple and combination classes. Students enjoy the excitement of performing at the annual end of year recital, and other dance performance experiences. Participation in recitals is not mandatory for students, but all NEFDA students are welcome. Encourage your children in the arts and let them experience the joy of dance and performance.

FLAGLER Adult & Community Education | Fall A 2012

Good things happening in the ESOL Program Students in the ESOL program are taught the fundamentals of English—reading and writing—along with the communication skills necessary to carry on day-to-day activities. Many of these students leave skilled occupations behind along with various educational degrees. They are thrust into a new environment completely foreign to their own. Now, they must learn a new language and assimilate into a new culture. Here are a few examples of the progress achieved in the ESOL classes. Within a few weeks, under the teaching of Eugene Zaitseff, Mrs. Cavallo Dorejan was able to find a fulltime, well-paying job in a local medical center. As soon as she enrolled in the advanced ESOL class, she immersed herself into the materials taught. Her insatiable desire to learn and motivation to improve her English language skills were the reasons for her quick success. Without industry, diligence and perseverance—the American values—Dorejan could not have achieved this success so quickly.

Dreams Coming True with the help of The New Beginnings Program The New Beginnings Family Literacy Program administered through Adult and Community Education Department of Flagler County Schools has proven that the program and the students are successful. New Beginnings is designed to empower families to grow toward independence together with a diploma being the first step. Adult Education provides classes to enhance reading, math, language skills, GED preparation, and/or English as a second language (ESOL). The New Beginnings participants attend these classes while their children are also learning at the Early Learning Center of Excellence located on the campus of Bunnell Elementary School for three hours per day at no cost to the families. As the photo shows, it really works! These students are also continuing their educational journey by enrolling in career training programs at Flagler Technical Institute and Daytona State College.

Our newest United States’ citizens are also students of Mr. Zaitseff. Luz Kelly (Columbia), Erika Baldwin (Hungary), Villarino Belen (Venezuela) and Edith Plaza (Chile) all passed the citizen’s test this month. They had studied the material in class and felt that they were well prepared—they were able to answer all the questions correctly. A holiday recipe book is completed every year by Mrs. Eleanor Milberg’s class. Fluency—the spontaneity to communicate in English in a variety of everyday life situations. Evidence of this statement is seen in the Adult Basic Education ESOL class. This class is open to ESOL students who have graduated from the ESOL program. Grace and Marie were helped with their grammar and passed their GED tests. Mira is going to be interviewed by the Wall Street Journal regarding the skills she acquired in using English in a natural way. A class, led by Mrs. Vicki Stanton, has gone on many field trips. A field trip opens opportunities to illustrate actual interpretations of the many new words learned. Students are able to have a hands-on learning experience. The areas covered may be of natural, cultural or educational encounters.

The Adult Activites Center Recognizes their local Firemen The Adult Activities Center students started a new project of recognizing our Firemen next door to Corporate Drive for Memorial Day and on Labor Day. The whole group walked next door with a platter of homemade cupcakes decorated for the occasion. The firemen on-site were really surprised to be honored in this way! We told them how much we appreciate all they do for our community, how they keep us safe, and they are always on watch to save people. We thanked them for the many times they have come next door to the Adult Activities Center or Step Up Industries to help someone in distress! They showed our students the fire engines, and took our picture next to the BIG RED TRUCK! The students and the firemen loved all the attention! THANK YOU FIREMEN!

Each of the ESOL classes is unique. Our students are eager to learn and eager to succeed. Some students have very little English communication skills—others need to refine those skills. In any case, their needs are met. Their teachers welcome each class with the same enthusiasm to teach as the students have to learn.
