rhino 5.0, Illustrator, photoshop Eastern paper-making mill, gallery, and artist studios nestled in an older industrial area of Seattle, WA. Large industrial windows, concrete formwork, shiplap, and steel reflect the vernacular surroundings while the display of translucent paper hung from large skylights adds a whimsical softness to the interior.

NEIGHBORHOOD HALA ZONING & BUILDING AGE

Rainier Vista Development Newest development with mixed single and multi-family housing serving lower, middle, and upper income families. Services and mixed-use large NC1 buildings line Martin Luther King Jr Blvd S (MLK) north of the light rail station. Architectural styles pull from the vernacular of the neighborhood.

ArcGIS 10.3, photoshop, illustrator by Erin Childs

The historic Columbia City neighborhood in Seattle, WA is facing rapid change from urban growth. This urban vision uses the opportunity to create a portal into the community from an underdeveloped light rail station area while encouraging equitable growth around four core values: neighborhood identity, density, transportation, and ecology.

13

Vernacular Housing The old single-family neighborhood is quickly mixing with new single and multi-family homes.

Neighborhood Character

Landmark District Main business district with small locally owned shops and restaurants. Buildings range mostly from the late 1800’s to 1960’s.

Increase Light Rail area density with affordable housing and small local businesses while preserving existing vernacular architecture. Encourage NC-Residential to limit over sized development and maintain the neighborhood character. Centralize community services around accessible pedestrian pathways from Light Rail Station.

Design inspired by mid-century boomerang coffee tables. BALLARD LOCKS LEGACY WALL

Public Art Commission Expected Completion: Spring 2019 Seattle, WA

1/16 stainless steel, stainless steel cable, rhino 5.0, photoshop

The Hiram Chittenden Locks in the Ballard neighborhood is undergoing plans for a remodel to update and modernize the fish viewing area and visitor center. Donations are needed to fund this civic project. Major donors will have their names carved through the salmon placards and displayed as an art installation mounted over the fish ladder. The mounting and hardware assemblies are in the early stages of the design process. The abstraction of stainless and weathered corten steel is reflectant of the continuous processes of water, industry, and the salmon lifecycle connection in the Pacific Northwest.
