RECREATION COMMUNITY CENTER Fourth year Comprehensive Studio Site: Syracuse, NY Partners: Rhandi Green

The Erie Canal Competition looked to reposition Erie as the vehicle for a globally relevant, ecologically turbocharged urban corridor. We proposed a recreational education center that invites all members of the Syracuse Community. The building is split up into 4 main zones that surround the central landscape. This includes the entrance, the greenhouse, the pools, and exhibition / office space. The 4 zones are situated in the 4 bridges, which are held up by trusses that anchor to concrete cores.

PLAN

We looked at the various types of wetlands in the Syracuse, Dewitt area. Bringing these local wetlands into our site could create biodiverse habitats that provide Erie Blvd with more recreational opportunities and create a sense of community as well.

Final Model

Throughout the 4 zones we look to include 5 main experiences unique to each zone. The bridge facades include a layer of glazing followed by a layer of ETFE bubbles which serve as shading devices.

The pool zone is an interactive experience while the greenhouse is a calm interactive experience.

The exterior intrigues passerby, only a glimpse of the central wetlands can be seen.

INSTITUTE Third year project Site: Cambridge, MA

The new Headquarters for the Institute for the American Federation of Writers focuses on providing a place in which writers and scholars can accumulate, produce, and disseminate knowledge. A large lecture hall on the ground floor introduces visitors and residing scholars to the headquarters. This feature gives scholars a space to congregate, as well as, disseminate knowledge to both the public and scholars. An interior balcony on the second floor allows for engagement with the events and lectures taking place on the first floor.

Section

Front Elevation The Headquarters balances between Public and Private spaces. The first two floors are dedicated to the Public while the four upper floors are Private floors for the residing scholars. The building invites visitors for the purpose of education, while allowing scholars and writers to produce their documents in their respective offices and apartments. Private Floors only for Scholars

AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMPLEX Fourth year project Site: New York, NY

After conducting research on current NYCHA housing conditions, it became apparent that the area would benefit from a new urban strategy of programmatic assignment. The Van Dyke housing site has a community center, but in order to revitalize the area, vacant spaces need to be landscaped or assigned a program. Neighborhoods where low income housing is prevalent tend to lack in commercial or entrepreneurial space. By creating a programmatically mixed space this not only provides ammenities which where previously unattainable, it also activates the area creating a safer neighboorhood.

Study Model

NYCHA housing tends to be closed off and uninviting, by adding commerical spaces which are transparent and accessible to the public this creates a safer, welcoming environment. To further the design I looked at the Active Design Guidelines to create a space which promotes healthy living.

The central feature is modeled after Bryant Park. The central park area is an open space ment to be used for community events. Processional steps cross through the building and lead into the park. Small kiosks surround the central park and provide economic exchange while diversifying the space.

Second Floor Plan 1/16”=1’0”

The assignment was to redesign Hans Oriental Supermarket on Erie Blvd. and include a shared banquet hall space for 200 people. After conducting research on food production in New York, specifically related to food insecure neighborhoods, I found that the Westside of Syracuse is a food desert. In order to remedy this problem I added a food truck service which on certain days parks on the westside to sell fresh produce in the area. When the truck is not delivering groceries it is parked in the supermarket banquet hall parking lot and becomes a food truck park. The addition of the food truck creates a new relaxed, community oriented environment is formed. Section AA 1/16”=1’ 0”

These models are the result of a formal exercise related to material properties. The objective was to achieve transparency and programatic organization through the use of cardboard and wire models.
