STANDARD 2: Demonstrates competence in content knowledge appropriate to the teaching position. C. Relates ideas and information within and across content areas. Description / Purpose of Artifact This artifact is the topic/subject of an ongoing effort to address internet safety among students. We had the Iowa State Trooper’s Internet Safety officer present to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students on the dangers of social networking sites on the internet in relation to predators and pedophiles. This presentation also showed some of the hooks, advertisements, and enticements that lead people into websites that exploit privacy and personal identity. This education crossed content lines of behavioral safety, technology, and all classroom education that involves using the internet both at school and at home. What I Learned / What this Artifact Shows / What Questions Remain This artifact shows that the goals of the counseling and at-risk curriculum cross into the classroom as the regular education teachers are increasingly requiring students to access the internet for educational purposes. The questions that remain include are we as adults tech savvy enough to understand the ways in which the internet is used for exploitation of people. And how can we best educate all students and those who use the internet to minimize the exploitation.
