Haiti’s reality CRS has worked in Haiti for over 50 years. Even before the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake, Haiti was a country in need. The nation is the poorest in the Western Hemisphere with 80 percent of the population falling below the poverty line. An estimated 1 in 10 Haitian children die before the age of 5 with twenty-five percent of the surviving children suffering from malnourishment. In addition, nearly half of the population is illiterate.
CRS response This natural disaster has left the people in desperate need of aid. At least $25 million has already been committed by CRS with over $16.5 million cash donations committed to this effort. The distribution of 2,100 metric tons of vegetable oil and grains from USAID’s Food for Peace program is being arranged by CRS. Three operating rooms at St. Francois de Sales Hospital have been opened by the CRS/Caritas team.
