PROGRAM NOTE: It is a rare opportunity to write a piece of music to open a new concert hall. The first performance in a new venue can be a moment filled with immense pent-up excitement, curiosity, and promise, as well as some nervousness. New beginnings also offer meaningful opportunities for reflection, to think of where we have been, where we are now and where we go from here. In the spirit of Brown’s culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, I wanted to celebrate the opening of The Lindemann Performing Arts Center with a collaboration across artforms. With the support of the Brown University Orchestra, Chorus and Brown Arts Institute, I invited Brown Assistant Professor of Literary Arts, Sawako Nakayasu, to write a new newly commissioned poem, Open again a turn of light, that I set to music for orchestra and choir. When Sawako and I met to discuss ideas, I shared two phrases that had recently inspired me in my thinking for this occasion: “soulsustaining light” and “refuge.” These are BAI Artistic Director Avery Willis Hoffman’s words from a presentation she gave to the faculty a few weeks earlier about the hall’s transformative potential as a physical space for inspiring artistic creation. My conversations with Sawako soon spanned a wide range of ideas and concepts, finding metaphors in natural phenomena such as wind and waves. Sawako returned a few weeks later with a poem that encapsulates a world of experiences. Grounded in the imagery of light, the text continually returns to the gesture of “opening,” each time helping us see this act through a new window of feeling. In the music, I aim to capture the poetry’s interplay between dark and light, play and contemplation, momentary feelings and monumental shifts, and also of looking forward and looking back. I was particularly captivated by the imagery of a few phrases from the poem: “open a rock to open the light,” “a turn of light,” and the weaving between a loom’s “warp” and “weft.” The music travels between low and high registers and dense and luminous timbres as it embraces and encompasses a world in between. At various points, the conductor’s hands sweep across the musicians, creating waves of sound that ripple over the stage. As I composed, I thought of how a new university arts center, like the journey though the liberal arts collegiate experience itself, may be home to a spectrum of experiences that serve to open the mind. Open again a turn of light was commissioned by the Brown University Orchestra and Brown Arts Institute on the occasion of the inauguration of The Lindemann Performing Arts Center, for premiere October 20-21, 2023 by the Brown University Orchestra, Mark Seto, Director, and Brown University Chorus, Louis Frederick Jodry, Director. - Eric Nathan
PERFORMANCE NOTE: Choir Positioning: The ideal spatial setup of the choir is from stage left to right: S A T B This placement of singers is the ideal stage setup for the whispering “waves” that move through the choir in mm. 56-64. Conductor Gestures: There is a Conductor staff at the bottom of the score (both the orchestral score and the choral/piano reduction). The Conductor will use their left hand to motion across the ensemble as indicated in the notation. When cueing sound in the orchestra, the goal is for each wave of sound initiated by Conductor’s sweeping gestures to ripple through the orchestra in ways that change slightly each time. It should evoke the sense of wind rustling the leaves in trees in a forest. When cueing sound in the choir, it should sound like waves of whispers passing across the stage, like wind. Conductor Notation: Conductor “paints” with gestures sweeping across ensemble. Staff notation: Top line of staff: point to left side of ensemble Middle line: point to middle of ensemble Bottom line: point to right side of ensemble
Choir “Waves” Texture and Notation (mm. 56-64): Choir members should whisper material notated in the boxes when pointed at/cued by Conductor's sweeping hand motions, performing the given rhythms and text as fast as possible, while maintaining good diction. The choir members should perform asynchronously, and not coordinate their entry or rhythms with their neighbors, continuing the figure(s) as long as it takes for each member to finish, even if Conductor has stopped "sweeping.” This should sound like a whispering breeze/wave/wind passing across the choir. It is not important that the audience understands the text in this section. Some words will come to the fore and others will be lost, and it may be different each time it is performed, which is the goal. Orchestral Players: Rustling/Fluttering Sounds and Conductor Gestures: For the “rustling/fluttering” sounds notated in the score and performance parts, each instrumental orchestral player should choose one to three “rustling/fluttering” sounds on their instrument, in any register, with any technique, playing, tapping, striking, stroking, etc. These should sound should be wispy, effervescent, delicate, like leaves, branches, grasses, or bird feathers and should be unpitched sounds. Recommendations for specific sounds to perform have been included in the Performances Notes in both the Score and Performance Parts (see Recommended Rustling/Fluttering Sounds). Players may choose to perform one of the recommended sounds or invent their own, for the durations listed. Players should memorize these figures for use in the sections marked by slash notation, and only perform these when cued by the conductor. In the sections in the instrumental parts marked with slash notation, players should watch the conductor intently and the conductor will gesture in sweeping motions across ensemble (Left / Middle / Right) with their Left Hand. During these sections, players should play when gestured/pointed at by conductor, randomly choosing between the given figures in the Recommended Rustling/Fluttering Sounds each time. The goal is for each wave of sound initiated by conductor’s sweeping gestures to ripple through the ensemble in ways that change slightly each time (with some players playing the same figure, and others playing a new figure/duration). It should evoke the sense of wind rustling the leaves in trees in a forest. For Strings: In the strings, if strings are notated as pizz., arco, sul pont., etc. in music preceding or following the Rustling/Fluttering sounds, these playing techniques do not apply to the string techniques players should use in the Slashed Notation sections. The Rustling/Fluttering techniques that players use are always the sounds recommended in the Recommended Rustling/Fluttering Sounds or are to be invented by the players.
Recommended Rustling/Fluttering Sounds (By Instrument): Three possible sounds/techniques are given below for three respective durational gestures. Players may use these sounds or invent their own sounds (with any technique, playing, tapping, striking, stroking, etc.) to one or more of the durational gestures given so long as the sounds are as described in the Performance Note (i.e. wispy, effervescent, delicate, like leaves, branches, grasses, or bird feathers and should be primarily unpitched sounds).
