Dear Friends, Have you considered grace lately? Many of you say it every day before meals, but that’s not the kind of grace I’m talking about. I’m talking about the kind that can lift you up when you are down, that can help you make wise choices in a world that grows increasingly complex.

You’ll have a chance to consider grace more thoughtfully during this upcoming retreat season with our new theme, Grace Enough, inspired by St. Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians (2 Corinthians 12:9).

It’s hard to believe the retreat season is upon us; seems like summer just began. But it was a magical summer, with many wonderful things happening at Holy Family. We had our firstever Vacation Bible Camp, welcoming more than 65 children, from kindergarten through sixth grade, to our campus the last week in June. The campers played games, sang songs, learned important Bible lessons, and explored commonalities with their youthful counterparts in Peru.

We saw a significant transition in our ground floor art gallery, which is now The Monastery Gallery of Art. The gallery will host its first exhibit starting in early September, featuring the paintings of noted Connecticut artist Mary Billingsley.

(See page 12.) A reception and talk with Mary is planned for October.

In the fall, we have two exciting conversations about Muslim-Christian dialogue.

And in November, we’re pleased to welcome Fr. Tom Reese, a world-renowned Jesuit scholar and journalist who will offer his insightful observations on “Pope Francis: The First Five Years.”

And that’s just a glimpse of some of the many excellent programs we have planned for you this season. You can see the entire lineup on the following pages, and you can always check our website, with its recently redesigned home page, for the latest happenings.

This year, as I celebrate my 25th anniversary as a Passionist, I am eager to welcome you here to Holy Family for your annual weekend retreat or for a day or evening program. It will be my joy to explore with you how God’s presence in our lives is “grace enough” for the journey.

Grace Enough Join Holy Family’s retreat team for a weekend of peace and reflection on the power of God’s grace in our lives. In an age of division, tension and change, Grace Enough will explore the many ways God’s presence empowers us and supports us through every step of life’s journey. Discover anew how God’s grace is our greatest source of strength and courage to meet the ever-present challenges in our lives.

Together we’ll reflect on how living in God’s grace guides us to make wise choices, leading to true happiness and peace. The retreat begins with a buffet dinner from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Friday evening and concludes with the celebration of Sunday Eucharist at 10:45 a.m., followed by a hot brunch at noon. Families of retreatants are most welcome to attend the Sunday mass and brunch at no extra charge.

Our Retreat Team Fr. David Cinquegrani, C.P.,

Sr. Elaine Betoncourt, C.S.J.,

is the Retreat Director at Holy Family. He holds both Master of Divinity and Master of Liturgical Theology degrees from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago as well as a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Music from Marywood University in Scranton, PA. Fr. David entered the Passionist Community in 1989 and has been a chaplain and music educator on the college level for 30 years.

is a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Her educational background includes degrees in Theology and Latin, and courses in spiritual direction and pastoral counseling. A teacher for many years, Sr. Elaine also served as pastoral associate in four CT parishes and in Appalachia.

Within her community she was director of vocations and novices and a member of the provincial leadership team. Near and dear to her heart is working for care of the earth and the poor of our world.

Dr. Brandon Nappi is Holy Family’s Associate Retreat Director. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he majored in Theology and Medieval Studies. Brandon’s work has included prison ministry, adult education, and teaching meditation and mindfulness.

He completed a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University and holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis. Brandon is also the founder and Executive Director of Copper Beech Institute. He blogs for the Huffington Post and teaches an annual course in mindfulness at Yale University.

Liza Peters has been the Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry at Holy Family since 2011. Prior to joining the retreat team, she spent four years as the Director of Religious Education at a parish in Dayton, OH. Liza also lived in community and worked at the St. Peter Claver Catholic Worker House in South Bend, IN. She has a B.A. in Psychology and a Master of Divinity from the University of Notre Dame.

He has worked with the Archdiocese of Hartford’s Office of Catholic Social Justice Ministry presenting at their conference and assisting the ministry with strategic planning. With his sons, Bill began a nonprofit agency to enable food security in Haiti and other developing countries. He is currently working on a thesis concerning social justice at the turn of the twentieth century.

Youth Ministry Holy Family’s Youth Retreats provide our children an opportunity to grow spiritually and deepen their understanding of our Catholic faith.

Grounded in catechesis, these retreats also expand the youth’s experience of prayer. Cooperation experiences and small-group faith discussions add fun and a sense of community to the retreats. Our youth ministry programs will help your parish or school communicate the joy of faith and the beauty of a lifelong journey with God.

SEPTEMBER 29-OCTOBER 1, 2017

JUNE 15-17, 2018

We invite men and women between the ages of 22-35 to attend this special themed weekend retreat. We will explore our theme, Grace Enough, through the lens of young adulthood and its many challenges and joys. The retreat includes: dynamic teaching, home-cooked meals, inspirational liturgies, original music, free time to rest and walk the labyrinth, and workshops.

The retreat begins with dinner from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Friday evening and concludes with Sunday brunch at noon.

Offering: $150

This weekend retreat offers teens of high school age opportunities for growth in personal faith, community building and leadership training. The retreat provides a sacred and restful atmosphere to support teens in the understanding of their Catholic faith. It encourages teens to share their gifts and talents with their parishes and to be leaders in sharing their faith with others. The retreat begins on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. and concludes with a family Mass on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Refreshments will follow.

The pace of college can often leave students with the need to rest and reflect in a sacred space. On this weekend retreat for college students, we explore the retreat season theme and offer a variety of workshops to strengthen faith through learning and small group discussion. The retreat is centered on the liturgy of the Church and enhancing the experience of community among college students. The retreat begins on Friday evening with a buffet dinner from 6:00-7:30 p.m. and concludes with Sunday brunch at noon.

We provide an inspiring Confirmation retreat experience on scheduled Sunday afternoons. Included in the retreat experience: reflective prayer, catechesis, cooperation activity, a beautiful Reconciliation service with the help of Holy Family’s very talented musicians, and a delicious dinner provided by our executive chef, Joe Ethier.

Catholic School Retreats for Students and Faculty We invite Catholic school communities to experience the tranquility of this holy place. By offering a welcoming and peaceful place for your students and faculty to be renewed, we hope to support the important work of our Catholic schools.

Our retreats for students include community-building exercises, small-group discussion and sharing, time for reflection, Mass, lunch and a project that can be taken home as a memento of our day together.

Our faculty retreats include a dynamic conference to address the particular needs of working in a Catholic school environment.

We also include a variety of workshops, which can be modified to fit the needs of your faculty. Together, we will celebrate mass as a community of faculty members and share a delicious lunch.

Kids in the House!

There’s nothing Holy Family staff members love more than hearing the sounds of youthful merriment tumbling from the main conference room and drifting down the hallways, around corners, and into their offices. It’s smile-inducing, for sure, and a reminder that the faith is vibrant and constantly being renewed in these young hearts and minds.

And it happens a lot — when St. Timothy’s in West Hartford, St. Rita’s in Hamden, and many other middle schools come to Holy Family for their Catholic School Day retreat; when kindergarteners through sixth-graders spend five days in June attending Vacation Bible Camp; when teens converge for a weekend of spiritual growth, community building and leadership training.

More than 2,000 young people — from early elementary school age through college and beyond — pass through the doors of Holy Family every year. They are part of the Center’s Youth and Young Adult Ministry, which has been active at Holy Family for decades. There are weekend retreats for college students and young adults, and Confirmation retreats on Sunday afternoon attended by hundreds of teens preparing for this blessed sacrament. Young people are involved at Holy Family in countless other ways as well — in the youth choir, helping out at Mass, on volunteer projects and more.

“Witnessing young people explore and engage in our faith is truly inspiring and uplifting,” said Liza Peters, Director of Holy Family’s Youth and Young Adult Ministry. “I look at these children and young adults and see the bright and hopeful future of our Church. It is a true blessing to journey alongside of them.”

The goal of our youth ministry is clear — help young people cultivate the faith, inner courage and strength they will need on life’s journey. The joy this ministry brings to our staff members and retreat team all year long is an added blessing.

Finding Friendship: Understanding Islam

Imam Sami A. Aziz 6:00-9:00 P.M. The first part in our two-part series will focus on the basics of Islam belief as we cultivate mutual understanding and respect between Muslims and Christians. This is a brief overview of a diverse faith practice of 1.7 billion Muslims around the world.

Offering: $40; Part I and II: $75 (includes dinner) Imam and Chaplain Sami A. Aziz is a public educator and spiritual peacemaker.

He has visited institutions across Connecticut to spread the message of peace, which is the core of Islam. He is the Muslim Chaplain at Wesleyan University and an assistant imam at Bloomfield Muslim Community Center.

He is a graduate of the Master’s in Islamic Chaplaincy program at Hartford Seminary.

Imam Aziz believes strongly in establishing peace and justice between all people regardless of color, race, ethnicity or religion.

Marcie Swift 2:00-3:15 P.M. The sound of the plucked string of the harp has enchanted and transformed people for thousands of years. In the Bible, David soothed King Saul during tumultuous political and emotional upheaval. Certified music practitioner and psychologist Marcie Swift has used her harp therapeutically to address stress, pain, insomnia, dementia, and isolation. Join us in a highly nurturing and soothing environment as Marcie, with her healing harp strings, brings us to greater balance. With uplifting story-telling, guided imagery and sharing, we will gently strive for improved balance and purpose. Offering: $250 Marcie Swift, M.Ed. CMP, is a certified school psychologist with over 30 years of experience in private practice, specializing in interventions that creatively foster positive growth in individuals, their families and schools.

Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop Mike Smoolca, Nancy Stimac 8:30 A.M.-12:30 P.M. In Centering Prayer Introductory workshops you’ll learn the method and principles of this prayer practice and have the opportunity to experience this ancient method in a quiet, reflective atmosphere. The workshop covers the history, psychology, and theology of centering prayer and includes prayer sessions along with questions and answers. Offering: $30 Mike Smoolca retired from a long career in business to focus on deepening his relationships, spirituality, teaching and service to others.

He is a Commissioned Contemplative Outreach Presenter of Centering Prayer and is a member of the leadership board for Contemplative Outreach of Boston. Mike is coordinator of the Northern CT Chapter of the International Thomas Merton Society, a practicing Spiritual Director, and a commissioned Stephen Minister.

Nancy Stimac, a longtime contemplative prayer practitioner, is a Centering Prayer facilitator and Commissioned Presenter of Centering Prayer for Contemplative Outreach, as well as a graduate of the Archdiocese of Hartford Catholic Bible School and Lay Ministry programs. She uses her gifts to serve the Catholic Community of Windsor Locks as a prayer group facilitator, Bible study leader, RCIA teacher, lector, and evangelization team and parish council member.

Contemplative Enrichment Day John of the Cross: Beyond the Dark Nights Dr. Rickey Cotton 8:30 A.M.-4:30 P.M. John of the Cross is one of the greatest, most influential mystical teachers of the Christian tradition, and he is honored as one of the 36 Doctors or pre-eminent teachers of Catholic Church history. Most famous for his Dark Night of the Soul and often thought of as

austere and complex, John was actually a romantic of the Spirit who passionately longed for us to pass beyond the dark nights into full-scale transformative union with God. In addition to the presentation of biographical and spiritual information, we will have periods of contemplative prayer as well as meditation on key selections from John’s powerful teaching.

And, of course, there will be opportunity for questions, dialogue, and mutual stimulation as we engage this heroic spiritual teacher.

This three-hour session will offer hands-on experiences of Imaginative Prayer with Scripture and the Consciousness Examen.

Offering: $30 Andree Grafstein, M.A., C.A.G.S., is a Roman Catholic layperson who enjoys a long interfaith marriage. Andree is an experienced spiritual director, retreat director and program presenter with 30 years of experience.

She coordinated and taught the Internship Training Program for Spiritual Directors at the Spiritual Life Center, West Hartford, CT, for 10 years. She currently offers spiritual direction and supervision for spiritual directors in her private practice and at the Spiritual Life Center.

Pope Francis: The First Five Years Fr. Thomas J. Reese, S.J. 6:00-9:00 P.M. We have watched from afar the amazing mission of Pope Francis to renew the Church in the modern world. Though widely respected and loved, there are now detractors who question the Pope’s leadership style and wonder about the future of the Church. Join Fr. Tom Reese, a world-renowned Jesuit scholar and journalist, who will present his own observations on this “Pope of the People” and enter into dialogue with Fr. Tom about the possible outcomes for the Church and the world into the future.

Offering: $40 (includes dinner) Fr. Thomas J. Reese, S.J., is a Senior Analyst for the Religion News Service.

As a journalist and commentator, he has covered politics, economics, and the Catholic Church.

From 2014 to 2017, he was Senior Analyst for the National Catholic Reporter. Previously, he was a Fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center from 2006 to 2013 and from 1985 to 1998. He was also Editor-in-Chief of America magazine from 1998 to 2005 and an associate editor from 1978 to 1985.

Fr. Reese entered the Jesuits in 1962 and was ordained in 1974. He received a B.A. and an M.A. from St. Louis University, an M.Div. from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. He also is the author of Inside the Vatican: The Politics and Organization of the Catholic Church, A Flock of Shepherds: The National Conference of Catholic Bishops,

Lectio Divina Introductory Workshop Mike Smoolca, Nancy Stimac 8:30 A.M.-3:00 P.M. The Lectio Divina Introductory Workshop teaches the method of Lectio Divina as a way to pray the sacred scriptures. It presents a Christian tradition of prayer that through reading, reflecting, responding and resting in the Word of God, one’s relationship with God is nourished and deepened. The workshop provides the participants with both group and individual experiences of Lectio Divina.

We will reflect on the spirit of gratitude and the gift of friendship as we prepare this Friendship Bread recipe. You will leave with a loaf of freshly baked bread, recipes to make other breads, and a gratitude booklet.

Matt Talbot Women’s Recovery Retreat Sr. Maureen Murphy, O.P. At Holy Family, we invite women in recovery into a peaceful atmosphere where you can rest, renew your spiritual life, and deepen your sobriety. Hear an inspiring lecture, take a yoga class, get a massage (extra fee), catch up on some rest, or simply care for yourself as we care for you in mind, body, and spirit. Our Matt Talbot weekends are open to ALL people, from ALL backgrounds, regardless of whether or not you are a member of a church. Offering: $65 (includes lunch) Rev. William Redfield retired as rector of Trinity Church, Fayetteville, NY, three years ago after nearly 20 years. Besides being an Episcopal priest for over 40 years, he is also a licensed clinical social worker and has worked in private practice in central New York and Maine. He is the creative force behind the birth of Wisdom House, Fayetteville, NY. Bill is a student of and a collaborator with Cynthia Bourgeault, the author of many books on Wisdom Christianity and contemplative spirituality. Bill is currently working to proliferate the concepts and practices of contemplative spirituality and Wisdom Christianity through workshops, retreats, and Wisdom schools.

Advent Contemplative Retreat Light Sitting In Light Fr. Martin Laird, O.S.A. “Just as air is in the light of the sun, and the light of the sun is in the air—so too is God constantly in the being of the soul.”

These words from the 14th-century Flemish mystic, Jan van Ruusbroec, serve to guide this retreat. Ruusbroec’s description of our relationship with God is not something any of us needs to acquire. It only needs to be realized.

Through self-forgetful release into the practice of contemplation, the illusion of separation from God is dispelled. We become so silent before God that any distance from God drops away.

Through silent prayer, conferences and discussion, we shall consider such things as:

He was the director of Loyola Retreat House, in Faulkner, MD, as well as the house manager at Miramar Retreat Center in Duxbury, MA. Jim has also worked as a counselor in recovery settings.

He is currently working at the Swift River Addictions Campus in Cummington, MA. He believes in the grace that flows through retreats.

Rosary Paintings Donated

by Connecticut Artist Mary Billingsley Others to be Featured in Gallery Exhibit This Fall Retreatants and visitors to Holy Family Retreat Center are invited to view the stunning selection of rosary paintings now on display on the third floor of the center’s Retreat building. The 21 paintings, valued at more than $168,000, were donated last year by Connecticut artist Mary Billingsley. Billingsley, who holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Boston University, creates Christian art with Catholic themes using gouache paint. She has exhibited her work throughout the Northeast.

The paintings are unique and whimsical in that they depict scenes from the Catholic rosary based on still-life “shrines” Billingsley constructed using everyday objects. Created over a period of 20 years, they are being showcased in the third floor hallways, which have been enhanced with special lighting to accentuate the beauty of the paintings.

“The rosary paintings are exquisite, and we are deeply honored that Mary has entrusted her precious works to us,” said Fr. David Cinquegrani, Retreat Director at Holy Family.

The rosary is a form of prayer, aided by a string of beads to count each prayer, used in the Catholic Church to recall events in the lives of Jesus and his mother Mary. These events, categorized as Joyful Mysteries, Luminous Mysteries, Sorrowful Mysteries, and Glorious Mysteries, include such things as The Nativity, The Crowning with Thorns, The Crucifixion and Death, The Resurrection, and The Baptism "I am so happy of Christ in the Jordan.

The rosary paintings are also depicted in an illustrated children’s book Billingsley wrote titled, The Life of Jesus: An Illustrated Rosary. The book is available for sale in the Holy Family bookstore, and Billingsley notes that it is suitable for “children of all ages.”

The Monastery Gallery of Art Opens at Holy Family After five years of calling Holy Family home, the Golden Thread Gallery has moved on. The Monastery Gallery of Art now occupies the space on the ground floor adjacent to the Public Chapel. In addition to the rosary paintings featured in the corresponding article, Mary Billingsley has donated 11 other paintings to Holy Family that are featured in the first exhibit at the Gallery. The exhibit runs through November 20. A reception and talk by the artist is planned for October — so stay tuned!
