Occoquan Surgery Center

Surgery Center Expansion to the Sentara Hospital Woodbridge, Virginia Year 5 8 Weeks Team of 4 [2 Arch + 2 Interior Design] Concept: A hosptial in the midst of decentralization needed a surgery center (10 OR) that could redifine its image and create a figurative window into the future of the complex. Using Evidence Based Design, the Occoquan Surgery Center creates and defines an experience - through the presence of nature and the coexisitence an interior and exterior pathway - that help a patient feel relaxed and calm through the stresses of surgery.

Pathway - A ‘way’ that defines a particular movement from place to place...


Cafe

...an experience that is defined by both interior and exterior spaces. The interior pathway serves as the lobby and waiting for the surgery center. The exterior pathway is the Occoquan Garden, a series of pedestrian-scaled spaces that share an intimate relationship with nature and the building.

Low-rise Residential Condominium New York City, New York Year 3 6 Weeks Independent Concept: Design a Low-Rise Residential Condominium that provides many spaces for community interaction. Located in the historical district of SoHo, Manhattan, the building grounds istelf using contextual cues from neighboring buildings. Tenant interaction is fostered with large recreation spaces, studio units with shared kitchens, and a resident-only cafe.

Transformation Special Collections Library Pilsen, Chicago, Illinois Year 2 4 Weeks Independent Concept: Design a shelf to hold a special collection of books. From the shelf, design a library to house the shelf. Pilsen, Chicago, is a historical hispanic community that is undergoing extreme gentrification. Local residents looked upon us architecture students with fear; unsure of what we represented.
